If you're in the market for a new car and diesel's among the options you'd consider, your local Audi showroom should be among your first destinations. The German automaker has made burning oil a cause célèbre right up there with Quattro all-wheel drive, but it's not about to sit on its proverbial laurels and let the competition catch up. To that end, Audi has just announced its most powerful V6 TDI yet.

Called the BiTDI, the 3.0-liter, six-cylinder twin-turbo-diesel packs 313 metric horsepower (309hp on our scale) and a whopping 480 pound-feet of torque. It's being rolled out initially in the UK on the A6 (sedan, Avant wagon and Allroad high-rider) and A7 Sportback, but we're told to expect its arrival soon as an option on the Q7 crossover.

In the A6 sedan, the BiTDI is said to be good for a 5.1-second dash to 62 mph, with top speed (as per usual) limited to 155 mph while returning a 44.1 mph rating on the combined UK cycle. But if that's not full enough a package for you, Audi has also fitted a sound actuator to give its throaty new diesel the exhaust note you'd expect from a hi-po gasoline engine. But you don't have to take our word for it - just click through the jump to listen to a sound file of the new engine, as well as read the official press release.
Continue reading Audi pumps out new twin-turbo TDI 3.0L V6 [w/audio]

Audi pumps out new twin-turbo TDI 3.0L V6 [w/audio] originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 01 Feb 2012 16:58:00 EST.
One man's new toy can be another's Moby Dick. Typically we'd mean that in a figurative sense, but Audi has taken things one step towards the literal - or literary - with its latest advertising spot.

The commercial centers around a Captain Ahab-like tow truck driver who has, when the roads turn white with deep snow, hooked just about everything on the road. Everything, that is, except the elusive Quattro.

The 60-second spot - called "Ahab" - features the latest A6, and is scheduled to air tomorrow during the NFL division playoffs (making it something of a junior Super Bowl ad). It will be followed by a 30-second version that will air nationally on other broadcasts, and Audi is building a broader digital content campaign around the ad as well, including a Facebook app to follow. You, however, don't have to wait for all that to see the clever clip: just click past the jump.
Continue reading Audi goes all Herman Melville on us to highlight benefits of Quattro

Audi goes all Herman Melville on us to highlight benefits of Quattro originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 13 Jan 2012 12:30:00 EST.
Good things, they say, come in threes. If that's the case, for fans of rugged-looking Audi wagons, this must be a good week indeed. Not only did Audi unveil the Q3 Vail concept in Detroit (while confirming the arrival of the production Q3 in the US market), but the new A4 Allroad also made its debut at the show. And now the German automaker has released the new A6 Allroad Quattro.

Like the two versions that proceeded it, the latest Allroad takes the A6 Avant wagon (which was just updated for this model year) and adds an extra dose of off-road attitude. That's taken care of by a six-centimeter (2.36 in) increase in ride height, contrasting lower bodywork, stainless steel underbody plating, flared fenders and roof rails.

Four engine options deliver their power to all four wheels, each displacing three liters and packing turbochargers and direct injection. The sole gasoline engine offers up 310 horsepower and 324 lb-ft of torque, while the three diesel versions range from 204 hp and 332 lb-ft up to 313 hp and 479 lb-ft.

We've yet to receive any word on potential US availability, but the fact that Audi chose to release this model the day after we'd all gone home from the Detroit show does not bode well. Looks like we'll just have to suffice with the details in the press release after the jump and the huge gallery of high-resolution images instead.
Continue reading Audi releases new A6 Allroad... with no word on U.S. availability

Audi releases new A6 Allroad... with no word on U.S. availability originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 11 Jan 2012 16:26:00 EST.
Audi is recalling a small number of 2012 A6 models built between April 8 and May 26, 2011. The problem? According to a report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the seam of the side curtain airbag may not have been stitched properly, and thus, may not deploy properly in the event of a crash. A total of 317 A6 models are affected by this recall.

To fix this, NHTSA reports that Audi dealers will replace the head curtain airbags free of charge. Owners are currently in the process of being notified and the official safety recall will begin in January. Follow the jump for the full details in NHTSA's release.
Continue reading 2012 Audi A6 recalled due to improperly stitched airbags

2012 Audi A6 recalled due to improperly stitched airbags originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 14 Dec 2011 18:32:00 EST.
It's that time of year, folks. No, we're not referring to the oodles of time spent shopping for the holidays, we're talking about end-of-the-year lists. Kicking things off in the automotive spectrum is industry stalwart Ward's Auto, which has just released its annual 10 Best Engines list.

Without further ado, here are the award-winners for 2012:

It comes as little surprise that seven of the ten engines on the list feature the most recent advance in power and efficiency, namely direct injection, or that a full half of them are boosted with the addition of either a supercharger or a turbocharger. Perhaps more surprising is that there's only one hybrid powertrain on the list, and it's from Infiniti, not Toyota or Lexus.

In fact, there isn't a single engine from Honda or Toyota on 2011's edition of the 10 Best Engines, nor are the 1.4-liter/111kW electric motor package in the Chevrolet Volt or 80kW AC motor in the Nissan Leaf anywhere to be found - both of which were on the list in 2010. Also missing? A diesel... any diesel - and there certainly are a few options from the likes of Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen from which to choose.

Though its neither direct-injected nor turbocharged, the Pentastar V6 from Chrysler is surely worthy of inclusion, if for no other reason than its single-handed ability to transform any vehicle it's in from an also-ran to a competitive proposition.

We'll also give a shout-out to Ford, which earned two spots on the list but could seemingly have garnered another for the excellent 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine in the F-150 pickup. Ward's has plenty of commentary on why each engine was chosen, and you can read all about it right here.
Consumer Reports has just finished evaluating four mid-sized luxury sedans, and the 2012 Audi A6 managed to tie with the Infiniti M37 for the top spot. The publication cites the German four-door's substantial improvements over last year as the reason behind its success.

In previous evaluations, the A6 has managed to score just 79 points on the CR scale. This year, that number jumped to 93. The A6 garnered praise for its strong acceleration, apt handling, comfortable ride and quiet, well-appointed interior. Those are all attributes we're inclined to agree with.

The A6 didn't take the top nod when it came to fuel economy, however. Consumer Reports says that the Mercedes-Benz E350 Bluetec remains king of that hill by returning an average of 26 miles per gallon. The full report is expected to land on news stands on December 6, though readers may get an early scoop by checking the final results on ConsumerReports.com right now. Hit the jump for the full press release.
Continue reading Audi A6 tops Consumer Reports luxury sedan comparo

Audi A6 tops Consumer Reports luxury sedan comparo originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 23 Nov 2011 15:43:00 EST.
Audi has posted an 'interactive' video on YouTube promoting its new A6 sedan. "Closed Course" is nearly two minutes of video game animation showing an A6 hot-shoeing it around an autocross course with a picture-in-picture view of the driver.

If this sounds boring, well, it is. But you're not supposed to just sit there and watch the video. By pressing the number keys, you skip back and forward to different parts of the video, thus creating the impression that you're actually controlling the car.

By timing your button-pushing just right, you can make the Audi navigate a course of your own design in a fairly seamless fashion. While this little game is no Dragon's Lair, it's worth wasting a few minutes at work - just be sure to let the entire video buffer before you start your tire squealing fun. Click past the jump to check it out.
Continue reading Audi creates interactive A6 driving video for YouTube

Audi creates interactive A6 driving video for YouTube originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 13 Oct 2011 09:30:00 EST.
Audi's latest ad campaign for the new 2012 A6 claims to want to make the road "a more intelligent place," starting with asking drivers to pledge to be on their best behavior while behind the wheel. At the top of the German automaker's list of sins is driving while drinking a latte, leading us to perceive the effort as only half serious. (Notably absent from the list is "I will give my keys to a sober friend after consuming six liters of lager at Oktoberfest.") Still, those who promise fealty to Audi enter a contest to win a trip to the Audi Sportscar Experience driving school, which we can guarantee is a lot more fun than the signing a pledge of, say, abstinence.

More to the point, however, is another new initiative, the Road Frustration Index. It's a clever mashup of data from Weather.com, traffic information from NAVTEQ, and Twitter feeds to show just how miserable life on the road is these days. Big metro areas are ranked in real time, with records dating back to early Sept. Audi didn't dream this thing up all on its own, but partnered with the Senseable City Laboratory at MIT to lend an air of credibility to the project, if nothing else. The Road Frustration Index is routinely tagging Sacramento, CA, Salt Lake City, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C., as the most frustrating places to drive, which seems reasonable.

While Audi and the researchers at MIT are using factors other than just road congestion to come up with their rankings, a quick cross-check of the Urban Mobility Report from the Texas Transportation Institute at Texas A&M University shows some overlap. TTI's 2011 edition has Washington, D.C., Chicago, Los Angeles, Houston and New York atop its congestion rankings.

While we will grant kudos to Audi for acknowledging just how miserable life can be out there in the commuter world, at the end of the day, this is still an ad campaign. And while a new A6 might make your commute a heck of a lot more enjoyable, it's quite a stretch to suggest the car is one of the "solutions" to improving the state of our roads.
Audi's "Road Frustration Index" plugs new A6 originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 07 Oct 2011 08:33:00 EST.
Earlier this year, executive editor Chris Paukert and I were chatting one morning about the 2011 Audi A6 he was driving - a car that would soon be replaced with the sharp new 2012 model you see here. Of course, we discussed how the car's styling was growing a bit long in the tooth, but aesthetics aside, Paukert's overall impression of the 2011 A6 was that it was still "pretty damn good."

Fast-forward a few months, and I'm standing in front of the 2012 A6, its full-LED headlamps glaring at me, its new sheetmetal stretched over a more aggressively styled body, complete with new aluminum components that reduce overall weight. The engine, Audi's 3.0-liter supercharged V6, was carried over from the 2011 model, albeit fitted to a brand new eight-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission. And inside - oh, inside - is a suite of technologies that will embarrass the collective staff of an Apple store.

So, if the old 2011 model was "pretty damn good," this new 2012 model must be the bee's knees, right? Oh, is it ever.

2012 Audi A6 3.0T Quattro [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 04 Oct 2011 11:57:00 EST.
The current state of the automotive industry is all about blurring lines. Cars and trucks used to be on opposite sides of the market until crossovers blurred the line. Coupes and convertibles have come closer together with the proliferation of the retractable hard-top. Even the line between manual and automatic transmissions has been blurred by the advent of CVTs, DCTs and sequential gearboxes of every sort. And the same could be said for advertising.

While automakers used to pitch their products in short commercial spots - and most still do - some have started producing their own content. That is to say, the intermission has become the main act. Just look at BMW's film series The Hire, or Audi's new television program Untitled Jersey City Project.

Filmed by True Blood and Game of Thrones director Daniel Minahan, the plot revolves around a couple of young architects hired to build a stadium in Jersey City, just across the river from Manhattan, but soon find themselves in over their heads. The sequence jumps around a moving timeline, starting with the climax, as the protagonist zips around New Jersey in his new Audi A6. Each two-minute episode is set to air on FX every Sunday night for eight weeks... or you could just jump past the break and watch them all right here.
Continue reading Audi blurs the line between show and commercial with "Untitled Jersey City Project"

Audi blurs the line between show and commercial with "Untitled Jersey City Project" originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 27 Sep 2011 19:01:00 EST.
The hot new 2012 Audi S7 is certainly worthy of your attention (and your drool), but if swoopy hatchbacks aren't your thing, perhaps the svelte new S6 will pique your interest. After all, it packs the same twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 as the S7, cranks out the same 420 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque, and has the same list of technological gadgets to keep you and your passengers entertained.

The S7 may be the more eye-catching of the two cars, but we'd be out of our minds to ever kick this thing out of bed. See the bright red hotness for yourself in the attached high-res image gallery and the particulars in the official release after the jump.
Continue reading 2012 Audi S6 gets the 4.0L twin-turbo treatment

2012 Audi S6 gets the 4.0L twin-turbo treatment originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 14 Sep 2011 10:42:00 EST.
It's a big deal when the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety honors a vehicle with a Top Safety Pick designation, and now the 2012 Audi A6 and 2012 Volkswagen Passat can join the big deal club. The IIHS gave both VW Group vehicles the award after they received top scores in stringent front, side and rear impact testing. Both vehicles also feature electronic stability control; a must for any Top Safety Pick winner.

The last check mark any Top Pick needs is a top score in roof strength testing. Top Safety Picks need a roof that can withstand the pressure of four times the overall vehicle weight, and the IIHS says that the A6 can withstand 4.9 times its weight, while the Passat can withstand 6.3 times its weight. Hit the jump to read over the IIHS press release.
Continue reading Audi A6 and VW Passat earn pair of IIHS Top Safety Picks

Audi A6 and VW Passat earn pair of IIHS Top Safety Picks originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 09 Sep 2011 11:01:00 EST.
Audi of America President Johan de Nysschen recently went on the record about future product plans via the forums at enthusiast site Fourtitude. In addition to clarifying the big news regarding Audi's diesel initiative in the United States, de Nysschen let some other product plans slip out.

First, he confirmed that the next-generation A3 will be sold as a sedan in the United States. The sportback will be discontinued, but the A3 Cabriolet may join the U.S. lineup. The new A3 will be a 2013 model, but might not be available right at the beginning of the model year. All we can say is, we hope it looks exactly like the stunning concept car that bowed in Geneva.

As for performance models, de Nysschen says that an S variant of every car in the automaker's lineup is likely, and hinted at the S7 being offered here. The RS5 is still slated to arrive next year, though it will benefit from the A5/S5 facelift that'll introduced in the U.S. over the winter.

Fourtitude's interview re-confirmed that clean diesel versions of the Q5, A6 and A8 are in the cards, presumably with the 3.0-liter TDI V6. The A4 is also expected to gain a TDI variant, though it will likely be powered by a 2.0-liter four. The Q5 crossover will also spawn a hybrid variant, which will be on sale sometime in 2012.

Audi and Chrysler looked ready to tussle over the German automaker's European commercial for the 2012 Audi A6 Avant. The commercial spot in question had many accusing it of being a bit too close to the Chrysler "Imported from Detroit" campaign that kicked off with Eminem selling the world on Detroit and the automaker's new 200 sedan. What could've been a negative battle has, in fact, become quite a positive for the city of Detroit.

The two automakers won't reveal specific terms of their settlement, but both state that the end result was reached amicably. As a result of their agreement, Audi is going to spend some cash on projects that work directly towards the revitalization of the Motor City.
The paint is still drying on the 2011 Audi A8, but the Four-Ring automaker is already ready to roll out its 2012 lineup. A8 fans can now say hello a familiar variant of the flagship sedan which was missing upon launch of the launch of its redesign. The 2012 Audi A8 L will now be offered with a W12 engine under its hood and a $133,500 starting price on the window sticker. For that, you get a dozen cylinders giving 500 horsepower and 463 pound-feet of torque - enough to launch Audi's Big Daddy to 60 mph in a scant 4.4 seconds.

Any other items of note for the 2012 model year? Yes, we're glad you asked.

The sporty 2012 Audi TT-RS can be yours if you have $56,850 to spare. The redesigned 2012 A6 sedan starts at $41,700 for the front-wheel-drive 2.0T and $49,900 for the 3.0T with Quattro all-wheel-drive. Finally, the Audi R8 GT, if you haven't already heard, will run you $196,800. Still no word on when the Spyder derivative will arrive to add a $200,000 car to Audi's lineup.

While crossovers dominate the American highway, that role is taken up overseas by estate wagons. And few are as enticing as the Audi S6 Avant.

Offering all the creature comforts of the Audi A6, the S6 Avant ups the ante with all the cargo space you'd expect in a crossover with a rip-roarin' engine under the hood. In the case of the new model, we're expecting an all-new 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 driving some 450 horsepower to all four corners through an eight-speed automatic transmission and Quattro all-wheel drive.

In other words, that Porsche driver will never know what hit him, but with this latest batch of spy shots, we now do. It's the clearest look we've had at the upcoming new model yet, revealing the quad exhaust tips, full aero body kit, big-boy wheels and no cladding. All it needs are a set of S6 badges and it's off for a record-setting school run. Check it out in our high-res gallery for a closer look.
Audi S6 Avant looks ready to smoke your crossover originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 14 Jul 2011 13:01:00 EST.
You can now satisfy your hankering for a 2012 Audi A6 by spending a little time on the recently unveiled configurator. The sedan we called "a smaller, livelier A8" starts at just $41,700 for the 211-horsepower, 2.0 TSFI in Premium trim with a CVT and front-wheel drive, but online ballers can jump right into the $56,780, 310-hp, 3.0 TSFI Prestige with the eight-speed automatic and quattro.

Hint: if you want to open up the full world of options then head straight for the big-money guy (as you can see in the image above, we did just that), but there's fun to be had throughout the range by clicking the link below.
2012 Audi A6 configurator comes alive originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 27 Jun 2011 17:32:00 EST. We return to an old whine: Why exactly does the United States as a whole clearly possess the psyche that can categorically reject perhaps the two most useful body configurations ever thought of for road-going automobiles? Namely, the hatchback in all its various configurations and the most wonderful all-rounder on Earth, the station wagon.

Regarding the latter, witness this latest chapter in sensational wagoning, estating, call it what you will: the new 2011-12 Audi A6 Avant, which just had the covers pulled off it at a Berlin ceremony. We know that opinionists sprout from the ether of the Internet and have the habit of saying things in ways that reflect the writer's intensely personal and frequently skew-ish "obvious reason why" North America many years ago thumbed its collective nose at the wagon. But go ahead and comment; it's a lively and fun ritual. And for more of our own commentary, continue reading...
Continue reading 2012 Audi A6 Avant: Another wagon Americans just don't get anymore

2012 Audi A6 Avant: Another wagon Americans just don't get anymore originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 20 May 2011 19:25:00 EST.
We love a good station wagon. Audi has just pulled the wraps off its sleek new 2012 Audi A6 Avant, and we're already swooning over the capacious cargo-hauler.

'Lightweight' seems to be the buzzword for the latest A6 wagon. The body is comprised of bits of aluminum (20 percent of it in fact), and the A6 benefits from composite construction that integrates high-strength steel where needed to keep passengers safe. The lightweight approach to construction has helped the 2012 A6 Avant drop 66 pounds versus the previous model, and depending on the powertrain installed, the new car is as much as 154 pounds lighter than the one it replaces. The base A6 2.0 TDI Avant, for example, weighs just 3,616 pounds.

The A6 Avant is available with a choice of six engines and four transmissions. The base unit is a 2.0-liter TDI turbo-diesel four-cylinder that produces 177 horsepower, and is rated to consume approximately 47 miles per gallon when paired with a six-speed manual gearbox. A larger diesel is offered in the form of a twin-turbo 3.0-liter TDI mill, available in 204-, 245- and 313-horsepower configurations. That last one will push the A6 Avant from 0-60 miles per hour in 5.4 seconds.

Two petrol engines are offered, measring 2.8 and 3.0 liters, and both units employ variable valve technology. The 2.8-liter FSI engine produces 204 horsepower while the 3.0-liter TFSI pumps out 300 horsepower thanks to the attached supercharger. Besides the aforementioned six-speed manual, the A6 Avant can be fitted with a CVT or the seven-speed S-Tronic gearbox. However, the 3.0 TDI is equipped with an eight-speed Tiptronic transmission.

It seems there's no word yet on whether this Audi wagon is making the jump across the pond to pose in U.S. dealerships. For now, it's slated to go on sale in Europe later this summer with a starting price of €40,850 (approximately $58,288 USD). Read the full details in Audi's press release, after the jump, and click through our image gallery for a smattering of high-res photos.
Continue reading 2012 Audi A6 Avant arrives, automatically acquires adulation

2012 Audi A6 Avant arrives, automatically acquires adulation originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 18 May 2011 16:27:00 EST. The last time we heard anything about the upcoming A6 Avant, our spy photographers were braving brutal winter cold to snag a few heavily camouflaged photos of the luxury long roof. Now Audi has confirmed that it will pull the sheets off of the vehicle during a live television broadcast that will also be streamed on the interwebs for all to enjoy. The event will take place on Wednesday, May 18 at 8 p.m. CEST at the Humboldt Box in Berlin, though something tells us that you'll need to know a guy who knows a guy to get an invite.
The rest of us plebes can sit back and take in the whole affair from the comfort of our keyboard by watching the live stream here. Apple fans can also watch the unveil on their iPhone by using the AudiMedia App. Hit the jump for the press blast.
Continue reading PSA: Audi to unveil A6 Avant in live video event

PSA: Audi to unveil A6 Avant in live video event originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 13 May 2011 11:01:00 EST.
