When the Porsche 997 Turbo first came out and it was discovered that you could get from 0-60 mph in 3.4 seconds in the Tiptronic automatic transmission (which was quicker than the manual gearbox), that was incredible enough. In the updated 997 Turbo with PDK, however, you can apparently get to 100 mph in less than eight seconds with just three fingers on the wheel and a bottle of Coke at your lips.

Things coming out of Stuttgart are no longer incredible, they're outrageous. Follow the jump to watch Chris Harris do a bit of drinking and driving.

2010 Porsche 911 Turbo - Click above for high-res image gallery

With its new-for-2010 direct-injected, 3.8-liter turbocharged flat-six, the upgraded 2010 Porsche 911 Turbo has fired a shot across the bow of the world's supercar armada. Promising better performance, better fuel economy and better emissions, this tweaked 997 should hold the fort until the 998 appears in a couple of years.

With 20 extra horsepower motivating the lightened (by 55 pounds) all-wheel drive coupe, it should be noticeably quicker than its 2009 counterpart. How much quicker? Autocar is reporting that it's a full ten seconds faster around the Nurburgring Nordschleife than a 2009 Porsche 911 Turbo. That means the new Turbo just breaks into the 7:30s at 7m 39sec.

That still puts it behind the rival Nissan GT-R at 7:28 after former Formula One driver, Toshio Suzuki, went out and shaved more than a second off the car's previous best. Of course, Porsche still has a possible Turbo S model in the works and already produces a wicked 911 GT3 RS that can probably close the official gap between them and Godzilla.
The 2010 Porsche 911 Turbo differs from the Six Million Dollar Man in one crucial way; while it's better, faster, stronger, it can also be much, much yellower if you prefer. However, the last thing you want to be is yellow if you plan to explore the Turbo's capabilities. These 500 hp respond best to firm commands, the new Porsche Torque Vectoring responds to firm inputs, and the Coupe's $132,800 price tag ($143,800 for the Cab) respond to a bank account with the firmest of foundations. Perhaps our favorite thing about the car: no gas guzzler tax. That's hot for so many reasons. Not to diss yellow, but we'll stick with a manual black-on-black Coupe with the center-lugged wheels. The one on the Frankfurt show floor wouldn't be a problem, either.
You can't change the red interior color, however.

It's a little work, sure, but it's a Porsche Turbo of your very own - and besides, what else were you really going to do with your Friday night?

Gallery: 2010 Porsche 911 Turbo

[Source: Porsche]
Hidden Porsche Turbo configurator discovered - play with it while you can... originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 11 Sep 2009 15:58:00 EST.
Ah yes. Now that you've read the press release on the new and improved 2010 Porsche Turbo, wouldn't you like to watch the video press release? Sure you would! Warning: if Claude Lelouch's C'était un Rendezvous is the automotive video equivalent of bacon wrapped pate de foie gras, the three videos we got after the jump are a rice cake, a sprig of parsley and a can of Tab, respectively. Still, they are videos of the new 997.5 Turbo and in one of them the car is actually moving. That's got to count for something, right?

Switzer Performance P800 997 Twin-Turbo - Click above for high-res image gallery

You know what the biggest problem with Porsche's 997 Turbo is? Too slow. They're like German desert tortoises. Just kinda clumsy and always in the way. 480 horsepower and 457 lb-ft of torque rotating all four wheels might sound fast on paper, but it just isn't. Understanding this, Porsche came out with the more powerful GT2. However, 530 horsepower is still like standing still and rear-wheel drive is for drag racers. You need the traction of AWD, and something with more power than some dirty old Cadillac. A lot more power.

Meet the Switzer Perfomance P800 997. Here's the quick stats: 800 hp, zero-to-sixty in less than three seconds and the quarter-mile in just a smidge over ten seconds. Now that's fast. Oh yeah -- the P800's AWD, too. No one is going to mistake you for a Mustang with a blower. Where does an extra 320 hp vs. stock come from? Custom GT30 turbochargers, Switzer MONSTER intercoolers, electronic boost control, fancy headers and exhaust, plus a carbon clutch pack. We'll take it. In yellow. Full press release and video of a P800 on a Dynometer after the jump.

Gallery: Switzer P800

Continue reading Switzer Performance P800 997 Twin-Turbo: The world is never enough [w/VIDEO]

Switzer Performance P800 997 Twin-Turbo: The world is never enough [w/VIDEO] originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 31 Jul 2009 19:58:00 EST.

We'll start by saying that it's not exactly hearsay, but it's not anywhere near official, either. Take one 997 Porsche Turbo that has lapped the 'Ring in 7:40, practically fast enough to form one of those Stargate SG-1 vortexes behind it. Then take one Nissan GT-R, benchmarked against that Porsche Turbo, and flog that baby around the 'Ring as fast as possible. Add a few reporters on hand with stopwatches. And when the GT-R flies past the finish line, the reporters discover those stopwatches have come to rest after just 7:38.

So the story is that the GT-R is two seconds faster than the 911 Turbo on the Nurburgring. And the Skyline in the photos doesn't even look to be the mad-gunner EVO-spec version. If that's the case -- and yes, that's a big if -- and say you allow for the inaccuracy of handheld stopwatches and add two seconds, so the GT-R did the same time as the Porsche Turbo... Well, we're not crowning a victor, or speculating about the whats and whys, or what will happen when the real timed laps in production versions are done... we're just saying that's pretty good. That's all.

Not long ago Edo unveiled its 996 Turbo conversion kit. A couple of months later, and they've realized that that was so ... 996. Now it's time for their 997 Turbo package, called simply, "Shark." Horsepower goes from 480 to 550, and torque gets twisted up to 460 lb-ft to 583. Top speed is claimed to be around 210 mph. Outside, the package is rather understated, but of course we're talking about a car that looks half aftermarket when it leaves the factory. An altered front valance and front lip, a revised rear spoiler, and quad pipes are about it. If you don't include "edo competition" written on the sides, that is. We don't know how much the upgrade costs, but if you're spending what we're sure is "that kind of money," you could always get 20 more hp and 8 more lb-ft with Rinspeed's white Turbo number.

TechArt, known for its comprehensive revamps, is no exception. As we recently showed you, it's been hard at work on a follow-up to the rather awesome 996-based 2001 TechArt GTstreet.

Enter the 997-based GTstreet, one of TechArt's two Geneva debuts (more on the second one later). With a Carrera GT-topping 630 horses and an equally-amazing 600+ lb-ft of torque, the 0-60 claim of 3.2 seconds sounds quite reasonable, if not conservative. Like Porsche's factory supercar, its top end is well over 200 mph. In fact, TechArt claims the car's top speed is 214 mph with its power upgrades and new aero body kit. Official photographs have been posted to go along with the previous sketch we showed you, and we hope to have some live shots posted in a few hours as well. Well, the other shoe has now dropped, and TechArt now has the engine dishing out muscle to match the the car's good looks. For a rundown on the body and suspension mods, read our first post or check out the press release after the jump.

When the car makes its official debut at next month's Essen Motor Show, TechArt's tuning package will have the car's 3.6L boxer engine pumping forth 580 horses, an improvement of <strike>165</strike> 100hp over the suddenly pedestrian 997 Turbos being driven out of Porsche showrooms in standard guise. The giant increase in power comes after TechArt eighty-sixes the factory turbos in favor of larger units and upgrades the car's respiratory system with a new air filter and exhaust (which probably sounds absolutely evil). A reprogrammed ECU keeps all the changes from devolving into unbridled chaos.

All those mods result in some serious torque as well -- 516 lb-ft to be exact. The power gets wrestled to the Turbo's AWD system via the car's six-speed gearbox, which is now oil-cooled and features shorter throws thanks to TechArt. If you bought a Tiptronic turbo, don't sweat it. These guys'll still hook you up with the sick infusion of power.

So what does all this forced-induction mayhem net the driver? Well, the 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) time gets shaved from the stock car's 3.7 seconds to 3.45, and the top end rises to 211 mph from 193. Given that the unmolested 997 Turbo is nearly as capable as the tuned version, one really could get by with just the visual enhancements alone. But tuner cars like this are about pushing the envelope and wrenching every last drop of power out of the host vehicle -- a task the TechArt engineers are certainly up to. Why buy one? Because you can.

(Additional photos, press release, and tech specs after the jump)

[Source: TechArt]
Continue reading TechArt Porsche 911 Turbo to make Essen Motor Show debut

TechArt Porsche 911 Turbo to make Essen Motor Show debut originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 13 Nov 2006 18:35:00 EST.
