Enthusiasts of the Porsche 911 have been able to enjoy the new 991 for some time now, but they won't have to wait much longer to see the car in action on the race track. Just last week, Porsche teased us with a video of the upcoming 991-based 911 GT3 Cup racecar, and now we finally have our first official look at the car that will hit the track next year as the 911 GT3 Cup racecar. Porsche has yet to confirm when the street-legal version of this racecar, the 911 GT3, will go on sale.

Built on the same assembly line as the production 911, the 2013 911 GT3 Cup racer will benefit from a more powerful 3.8-liter flat six that produces 460 horsepower, but the big news is that the six-speed automatic gearbox will henceforth be operated by paddle shifters, which the company notes is "the first time for a Porsche brand trophy race car." Aside from the added power (up 10 horses compared to the current 911 GT3 Cup), other changes include an upgraded brake system, new one-piece racing wheels, a newly developed roll cage and driver's seat, along with a new rescue hatch built into the roof.

Teams looking to get their hands on one of these new GT3 Cup cars must first come up with the 181,200 euro asking price (around $234,000 USD) - not bad for a race car of the 911's ilk. Check out more details about the next evolution of this iconic sports car after the jump.
Continue reading Porsche 911 GT3 Cup race car moves to latest 991 chassis

Porsche 911 GT3 Cup race car moves to latest 991 chassis originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 10 Dec 2012 13:30:00 EST.
While we are always brimming with anticipation when Porsche rolls out a new 911, we've sort of become accustomed to the progression of debuts that follows the new model's initial unveiling. The Carrera and Carrera S are usually followed by Cabriolet and Cabriolet S, then the Carrera 4 S and so on. It's a fun little pulling-back of the curtain, but we usually know what to expect.

With that in mind, we bring you this video from the German sportscar marker, displaying its 991-generation GT3 Cup in all its stripped-down, track-ready hotness. All Porsche leaves us with is the YouTube description, "One very special Porsche 911. Not for the road. Only for the racetrack." That's all well and good, but if the last 911 and the one before that have taught us anything, it's that Porsche will be taking "strong enough for a track, made for the road" GT3 variant in the not-too-distant future.

In the mean time, feast your eyes on the video below of this race-ready, rear-engined beast.
Continue reading Porsche teasing next 911 GT3 Cup racecar with track footage

Porsche teasing next 911 GT3 Cup racecar with track footage originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 07 Dec 2012 12:45:00 EST.
There's been debate about whether the 2013 Porsche 911 GT3 will come with a manual transmission or PDK only. Inside Line has said that only one transmission will come to market, and the 911's product chief, August Achleitner, told IL that both transmissions were being tested but that it looked like the PDK would get the nod. Few outside Porsche testing facilities know what the answer final is, but thanks to some spy video, we now know what a PDK-equipped GT3 would sound like.

Other speculation surrounding the everyday racer says that it will be 150 to 200 pounds lighter than the preceding generation, and that its engine has been moved forward a bit to improve handling. Power output is expected to be around 480 horsepower, leaving room for the GT3 RS to hit the 500-hp mark. Check out the video below for the sights and sounds - and note what looks like a Gurney flap on the prototype's unique rear wing.
Continue reading Next 911 GT3 caught on video with PDK transmission

Next 911 GT3 caught on video with PDK transmission originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 29 Aug 2012 12:32:00 EST.
Now that the rear-wheel drive Porsche 911 has clapped its thunder, it's time for the 991-generation all-wheel drive Carrera 4 and Carrera 4S to roll forth in coupe and cabriolet forms. The meat of the transformation is the Porsche Traction Management system, and it's as much as 143 pounds lighter than the previous 997 C4S, despite being about 1.7 inches wider in back with rear tires that are a third of an inch broader. Detail changes include the cross-light connecting the taillamps moving up a bit and going what appears to be all LED illumination.

The new model has also brought less obvious benefits like better gas mileage than its predecessor, even with more power and speed. The 400-horsepower C4S Coupe, the quickest of the bunch, can dash from zero to 62 mph in 4.1 seconds, max out a whisper beyond 185 mph and return almost 26 mpg combined if fitted with the optional seven-speed PDK dual clutch gearbox (the seven-speed manual comes standard).

Ushering in new tech that will become available for the entire 911 range, the C4S receives adaptive cruise control, a sliding glass sunroof and, on manual-equipped cars with the Sport Chrono pack, automatic double-declutching during downshifts in Sport Plus mode.

We'll see them on the Porsche stand at next month's Paris Motor Show and they'll go on sale in Germany later this year, finally arriving in U.S. showrooms next February. Not including $950 for destination, it will take take $91,030 to get in the all-wheel-drive 911 C4 Coupe. The C4 Cabriolet breaks the six-figure barrier at $102,930, trumped by the C4S Coupe at $105,630 and the C4S Cabriolet another high-jump away at $117,530. The all-new 991 variant of the Porsche 911 has only been on sale for a few months, but renowned Porsche tuner Ruf is already hard at work applying its patented blend of power, handling and braking to the latest 911.

On hand at the Geneva Motor Show are two new 991-based Rufs, the Rt 35 Anniversary (green, above) and the RGT 8 (yellow). The Rt35 is a rolling celebration of Ruf's 35 years in business and beats Porsche to the punch by offering a twin turbo kit for the Carrera S, outputting 621 horsepower and an equally astounding 608 pound feet of torque through a standard seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. Ruf isn't citing a 0-60 time, but claims the Rt35 tops out at a little over 205 mph.

The original RGT 8 debuted here in Geneva two years ago and shocked Porsche purists by packing a race-derived V8 where the flat-six would traditionally reside. This updated version based on the 991 uses a similar 4.5-liter V8 good for 543 hp and 368 lb-ft of twist, all routed through a proper six-speed manual gearbox.

Finally, Ruf has updated its flagship CTR 3 in a new Clubsport variant, with copious quantities of carbon fiber both inside and out and powered provided by a twin-turbo flat-six outputting 740 hp and 708 lb-ft of torque. A six-speed sequential gearbox puts the power down, further ensuring its status as a track machine that's barely suitable for a run to the corner store. Bonus Ruf porn in the video below.
Continue reading Ruf gets to work on the 991 Porsche 911, reveals new CTR 3 [w/video]

Ruf gets to work on the 991 Porsche 911, reveals new CTR 3 [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 06 Mar 2012 18:29:00 EST.
Gran Canaria is a volcanic nexus of disconnected associations, a bit of everything from a bit of everywhere. Geographically and geologically, this third largest of the Canary Islands belongs to Africa. Climatologically, it belongs to the Macaronesia Ecoregion. Its name is said to have come from an ancient Mauritanian king who, according to Pliny the Elder, named it Islas Canarias - Island of the Dogs - because of the numerous canines upon it. Politically, Gran Canaria belongs to Spain, which is why the tallest mountain in Spain is on neighboring island Tenerife. Linguistically, however, the Canarios dialect can be challenging for Spanish speakers to understand.

The island occupies just 600 square miles, but it's otherwise all over the map. Yet it shares one crucial thing with the 2012 Porsche 911 Cabriolet that we flew there to drive: purpose. You have to want to get to Gran Canaria - it doesn't just happen.

Such is the case with Porsche's latest top-dollar droptop - neither luck nor accident could have created it; the men responsible wanted this very car. The 991 Cabriolet is the sum of 30 years of 911 convertibles, and for proof of purpose, you need only know that a team of engineers has been devoted to the roof - and just the roof - on this car since 2004. For that effort they would like that their creation, and the car beneath it, earn the same the accolade bestowed on the hardtop for three months now: the best ever.

It is. But there's more to it than a little extra fabric...

2012 Porsche 911 Cabriolet [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 22 Feb 2012 11:57:00 EST.
If we could summarize the Porsche 911 with just one word, it would be "evolution." For decades, Porsche has methodically improved its rear-engined sports car. The design changes are subtle, and power has risen steadily.

To illustrate this, Porsche made a video that plays off the 911's rich history. If you lie awake at night thinking about how great it would be to own a 911, hit the jump for some more inspiration.
Continue reading The Porsche 911 evolves

The Porsche 911 evolves originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 28 Jan 2012 12:04:00 EST.
Testing the next 911 is the gig of a lifetime, but as this development video from Porsche proves, it's still a job.

The Tangent Vector film crew was given behind-the-scenes access to the development of the 991, and the resulting ten-minute mini-documentary shows the length Porsche's engineers will go to make sure the automaker's latest and greatest arse-engined flagship is ready for the rigors of daily life. In this case, "daily life" for the development crew involves traversing the Arctic in -40 degree temperatures and keeping things on the road during a sandstorm. Get an eyeful in the video after the jump.
Continue reading Porsche releases mini-doc of 991 911 development

Porsche releases mini-doc of 991 911 development originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 06 Dec 2011 14:58:00 EST.
We just can't get enough of the new 2012 Porsche 911. Earlier this month, we had our first stint behind the wheel of Porsche's new icon, and since then, we've been reading (and watching) what others have to say about the 991 911. EVO magazine's Chris Harris recently took a Carrera S out along the twisty backroads of California, and in addition to giving the car a proper critiquing, Harris manages to get the car sideways once or twice, for good measure.

We won't spoil the whole review, but with a car as good as the new 911, don't expect to hear much in the way of negativity. Follow the jump to watch the full video.
Continue reading EVO gets sideways in the new Porsche 911

EVO gets sideways in the new Porsche 911 originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 22 Nov 2011 19:58:00 EST. You still might not be able to buy one yet, but that doesn't mean you can't get ready. The online configurator for the newest 350-horsepower Porsche 911 Carrera and 400-hp 911 Carrera S is up and running, ready to handle all of your intricate and expensive requests.

Although the starting price for a new 911 Carrera is $82,100, before you've finished with just the exterior color, wheel choice and seat options, you can be whispering sweet six-figure nothings.

Our best attempt at fictional fiscal irresponsibility produced a final bill of $118,730 for a 911 Carrera S in Cognac Metallic with matching wheels.
The new 991-generation of the Porsche 911 is now upon us, with the Carrera and Carrera S coupes unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show. So what do you think? Because love it or hate it, it'll be around for a while; 14 years, if the latest reports prove accurate.

According to Car, the new 911 will be around for two seven-year product lifecycles. And over the course of its life, you can bet that it'll spawn as many derivatives as the model it replaces.

First down the pipeline will reportedly be the Cabriolet, expected to arrive in both regular (3.4-liter 350-horsepower flat-six) and S (3.8-liter/400hp) versions in 2012 with semi-rigid folding panels under a new type of fabric that will look like an ordinary convertible but offer more solidity once up and folding beneath a hard boot instead of a fabric tonneau cover.

Towards the end of next year, we're to expect the all-wheel-drive Carrera 4 and Carrera 4S, followed by the 520-horsepower twin-spool 911 Turbo in 2013 and Turbo Cabrio in 2014, with the enthusiast's favorite 911 GT3 also arriving in 2013. The 911 Targa is tipped to go back in late 2013 or early 2014 from its sliding glass roof to a more conventional removable panel, with Speedster and hybrid versions also under consideration.

Porsche is also said to be developing a new generation of smaller-displacement turbo sixes to fit into the 911 in place of the ever-growing unit that has ballooned to as much as a four full liters in the GT3 RS 4.0. How Zuffenhausen will then differentiate the 911 Turbo when they've all got spools remains to be seen, but we'll reportedly have until 2015 to find out.
Porsche's latest 911 to last fourteen years, dowsized turbo engines under development originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 27 Sep 2011 15:02:00 EST.
Porsche has officially shown off its latest 911, and we got up close with the 2012 hardtop at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Droptop fans are still waiting on their own version of the 991, and our spy photographers have just managed to capture a few images of the upcoming convertible. The 2012 Porsche 911 Cabriolet should arrive on the auto show circuit in the next few months before it heads to your local dealership.

You can expect to find the same 3.4- and 3.6-liter flat-six engines tucked in the back as seen in the hardtop Carrera and Carrera S. Each will be paired with the PDK double-clutch or the all-new seven-speed manual gearbox. Whichever engine and transmission you decide to go with, expect to pay around $90k-100k for the privilege.
Porsche's new 911 Convertible caught near 'Ring originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 20 Sep 2011 16:58:00 EST.
An astute Porschephile noticed a 2012 Porsche 911 at a gas station in Stuttgart and went to work. Following the brown coupe through the pumps then out to the street, he captured the sight and sounds of the car codenamed 991 from just about every angle before it roared off. We'll see the final version at next month's Frankfurt Auto Show, but in the meantime, check out the video after the jump, and note the intriguing appendage that appears to be covering the sunroof opening.
Continue reading Undisguised 2012 Porsche 911 caught in Germany

Undisguised 2012 Porsche 911 caught in Germany originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 07 Aug 2011 09:59:00 EST.
The Porsche 991 is nearly here, and our spy photographers have managed to capture nearly-naked test cars out and about. As the newest 911 makes its way towards the auto show stage, Porsche's engineering and marketing teams are already working on a bevy of trims and limited edition iterations. One such version was caught running around wearing camo body armor, the next generation Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet.

Unfortunately, our spy photographers were only able to capture three shots before traffic got in the way. Check out the shots they did manage to snag of the next droptop Porsche turbo in our gallery.
Next Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet blows its top originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 02 Aug 2011 15:58:00 EST.
There were a whole lot of hidden Easter eggs in the official next-generation 911 teaser video that Porsche released this week. Despite the fabric camouflage, we could clearly see a new Panamera-inspired center console, the 991 generation's longer dimensions and a flat-six engine that's been moved even closer to the center of the car. One thing we didn't catch the first time around, though, is what may just be hard evidence of the fabled seven-speed manual transmission.

Take a close look at the zoom-in callout in the screen grab above. It's hard to notice, but see those extra lines going up and to the right at the end of the gear shift pattern? In today's manual transmission Porsche models, reverse gear is up and to the left, meaning that if we're looking at this correctly, the extra etching in the 911's shift knob would appear to be corroboration of a seventh gear.

If so, welcome to the future, manual transmission. Follow the jump to see the original Porsche 911 teaser video.
Continue reading More evidence of 2012 Porsche 911 seven-speed manual transmission?
We'll get to see the next Porsche 911, codenamed 991, during September's Frankfurt Motor Show, and among the things we have already discovered is the possibility of a seven-speed manual transmission. Porsche brought a few folks down to South Africa for rides in some pre-production cars, and Car and Driver has shared some of the tidbits, among which are confirmation of that seven-speed manual in a 400-horsepower Carrera S, as well as a hybrid drivetrain to be fitted in 2016.

The base Carrera will receive 350 hp from a 3.4-liter engine that C/D claims it will share with the Boxster S. That engine would be a drop of 0.2 liters from the current Carrera, but would have five more horsepower than the current car. The S engine stays at 3.8 liters but adds 15 more horses to its output. Both transmissions - PDK dual-clutch and manual - will get launch control, and the 991 range will have electronic parking brakes.

Being a 911, don't expect the overall design to change too much, but the 991 will be 2.5 inches longer and its wheelbase will be stretched by a whopping four inches. Front and rear tracks are also said to be beefier. That could help explain the handling "state of grace" that Inside Line, who was also in South Africa, describes feeling in the passenger seat during some hard driving. The application of electric steering, though, will have everyone wondering if Porsche can maintain its lock on the world's best steering feel. And if you want to know what the interior looks like, head over to TeamSpeed for a couple of shots. Think Panamera.
If you were thinking about buying the next-generation Porsche 911, you'd better start working out your shifting arm. Car and Driver has managed to extract a bit of information about the upcoming German sports car, and it appears a seven-speed manual transmission will be offered. You will be able to row-row-row-row-row-row-row your own <strike>boat</strike> gears.

Why the additional cog? Porsche reportedly wanted to supply the next 911 with a taller final gear in order to improve fuel efficiency. Hopefully we'll get to see the all-new shift pattern in the flesh when we head to Europe for the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show.
Next-gen Porsche 911 to get seven-speed manual transmission? originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 31 May 2011 18:27:00 EST.
The next generation Porsche 911 will be a significant departure from all previous generations, though to the untrained eye that could be a hot-air boast. The chief novelty of the 991, confirmed for us recently by Porsche sources in Germany, is that the entire range will benefit from a KERS device, such as what was used by a couple of teams in Formula 1 in 2009 and then immediately banned by the FIA for the 2010 season as an unfair advantage, only to be allowed again for this 2011 season.

The Kinetic Energy Recovery System takes brake energy recuperation to a whole new sophisticated level, putting it on reserve for when you want the pedal on the metal for quick overtaking. But it's not stored in any additional onboard battery system - instead, it is meted out via a dedicated special flywheel system.

The chief giveaway that Porsche is definitely planning the KERS strategy is the added wheelbase length of four whole inches together with added vehicle length of 2.75 inches. Just the right amount of distance for incorporating the new flywheel technology between the gearbox and engine.

Though the starter 991 911 Carrera is earmarked to have 350 horsepower from a smaller 3.4-liter flat-six engine, the KERS ingredient will give the car acceleration figures comfortably quicker than the 4.7-second 0-to-60 time of the current 997 911 Carrera. And this direction ensures that the new 911 can still emit less noxious stuff, go faster, go farther on a gallon, and, according to our sources, even weigh around 100 pounds less as Porsche rolls out more and more lightweight materials usage where we've never seen it before.
Next-gen Porsche 911 to use KERS throughout entire model range originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 16 May 2011 08:59:00 EST.
2011 Porsche 911 Convertible - Click above for high-res image gallery

The latest round of Porsche 911 spy shots showed the coupe undergoing cold weather testing, and now our frost-bitten shooters have caught the convertible ahead of its reveal later this year.

Being a 911, the stylistic changes won't be revolutionary, but we've gotten word from insiders that active aerodynamics are part of the package (think the Ferrari 458 Italia's pliable nose), along with a new speed-deployable rear spoiler and a handful of openings in the bodywork to tweak airflow and cool off components.

Underneath the new platform, which insiders hint will carry the 991 designation (we don't get the roll-back either), Porsche's boffins are likely to employ a new electro-hydraulic power steering system to further reduce emissions, with the standard 3.6- and 3.8-liter direct-injected flat-sixes carrying over unchanged. Inside, our spies suggest that the wheelbase may be lengthened to make rear seat accommodations more suitable for fully-formed humans and that Porsche may ditch the traditional hand brake lever in favor of an electronic switch, similar to the Panamera's.

We should get our first official eyeful of the next generation 911 later this year, with sales beginning in early 2011.
