Practicing their final notes before they go on song for paying customers, three 991-series Porsche 911 GT3 prototypes were caught at a filling station in Catalunya, Spain almost completely uncovered. According to the photographer (working with an iPhone), two of them (foreground in the photo above) were wearing a host of extras from the options list, while the third appears to be a prototype set up halfway between a traditional 911 and a GT3: it has five-bolt GT3-style wheels and central exhaust, but standard 911 front and rear bumpers and rear wing.

Notice that the little bit of camo on the proper GT3s covers the lower region of the rear bumpers and, we'd imagine, some venting. The tea leaves appear to unanimously point to the 3.8-liter six-cylinder hanging out back, but the exact horsepower rating is hidden behind the vagaries of "somewhere between 450 and 500." Remember, no matter how many horses there are, there will only be a seven-speed PDK available to stir them to action.

Meanwhile, in Germany, the 911 Turbo was caught on the streets of Stuttgart and even the basic black paint job could not pull a shrink the fulsome girth of its ample rear end. Sporting a bit of tape both front and rear, the general details can all be seen, including the redesigned exhaust treatment. We expect to get more colorful looks at both the GT3 and 911 soon enough, but for now there is the high-res gallery above and the two spy videos below.
Continue reading Porsche 911 Turbo, 911 GT3 caught with minimal camo [w/video]

Porsche 911 Turbo, 911 GT3 caught with minimal camo [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 25 Sep 2012 10:15:00 EST.
German publication AutoBild is reporting that the upcoming 2014 Porsche 911 Turbo, already set to be a technical tour de force, will offer all-wheel steering to go with standard all-wheel drive. Porsche hopes to increase the outright handling ability of the 991 Turbo via four-wheel steering, though no mention is made as to how the system will operate.

The new steering system is likely to join higher levels of power and performance, for an altogether more competent super 911 from the sports car company. We've already reported on rumors that the new Turbo could be outputting something like 550 horsepower from its force-fed 3.8-liter boxer six. That engine will supposedly be fitted with three turbochargers, too. Expect acceleration from 0 to 62 miles per hour to happen in close to 3.3 seconds, and for the top speed to touch 196 mph.

It'll be a year or so before Porsche debuts its new Turbo, with the first cars expected to make an appearance next spring as 2014 models.
Next Porsche 911 Turbo to get four-wheel steering originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 18 Sep 2012 10:15:00 EST.
Our trusty spy photographers have caught the upcoming Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet with its top down and its tail up on a stroll through German streets. To our eyes, the extended length and wheelbase are accentuated in the rear-end packaging, but it's still a looker.

Some reports say that motivation will come from a twin-turbo 3.8-liter flat-six, others say there will be three turbos affixed for immediate low-end action. Horsepower ratings are also a muddle for now, with various reports suggesting 515 horsepower or thereabouts, making for a 15-hp increase over the current Turbo, and that would be followed by a Turbo S with somewhere around 550 hp, a 20-hp bump on the present Turbo S. Other reports say the regular turbo will go straight for the 550-hp jugular, leaving the S to haunt the neighborhood of 600 hp.

What we do know is that it will pack all-wheel drive, a seven-speed transmission in traditional stick or PDK, and every electro-bauble in Porsche's arsenal when it finally is revealed. For now, catch what you can in the high-res gallery of spy photos.
Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet caught topless originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 21 May 2012 14:59:00 EST.
We've driven the new 991-series Porsche 911, and now the next chapter of the new 911 story - the 2013 Turbo - has been caught proving itself in the wintertide climate. Its most important details - the front and rear bumpers and side intakes - remain behind camo, but we now get a look at how the tail sits across the wider rump, and we think it looks quite good.

When it's finally revealed, the new 911 Turbo is expected to put out more than 500 horsepower - numbers from 520 hp to 550 hp have been mentioned - from it's tri-turboed (yes, three turbos) 3.6-liter flat six. Both the seven-speed PDK and seven-speed manual transmissions should be on offer, and the lighter-than-the-last-Turbo package should be screamingly fast. Have a look at the high-res gallery to see it from just about every angle.
Porsche 911 Turbo caught out and about again originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 30 Jan 2012 17:58:00 EST.
Quick: What's the world's most practical supercar? We're sure some Corvette and GT-R fanatics would answer otherwise, but we're going to go with the Porsche 911, in one of its many fantastic iterations. Narrowing it down a little further, we'll go with the 911 Turbo coupe, which offers at least vestigial rear seats, all-wheel drive and several hundred horsepower, all lined in a sumptuously luxurious leather-clad cabin.

Plus, as demonstrated in the video after the break, the 911 Turbo can also pull part-time duty as a small pickup truck. Don't believe us? See for yourself.

Silly Porsche, rivers are for boats. As the story goes, this particular Swiss Porsche owner had to learn that the hard way when his 911 Turbo was driven by a friend off a boat dock leading to the Rhine River. We assume this "friend" will forever be mentioned at cocktail parties in stories that start with "You won't believe..." and end with "... so I jump-kicked him in the throat, and that's why we're not friends anymore."

Click past the jump to see the sad, waterlogged Porsche flop like a fish on its crane-assisted trip back to dry land.
Continue reading Watch a hapless Porsche 911 Turbo get fished from the Rhine river

Watch a hapless Porsche 911 Turbo get fished from the Rhine river originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 25 Aug 2011 15:00:00 EST.
We've grown a little callous when it comes to Lego creations. We blame the internet. After all, with the world 's Lego builders itching to show off their latest Technic and basic block constructions, the bar is set continuously higher.

These days, our eyebrows don't arch at anything less than Lego perfection, which is why we're head over heels for the 911 Turbo Cabriolet PDK in the video after the jump. It's pure mechanical obsession in the best way possible. Everything works, from the retractable hard top to hood release. The car even boasts the same steering rack ratio as the real deal.

All told, there are over 3,500 parts wrapped up in the vehicle, including eight electric motors, three remote controls and around 21 feet of wire. Even more impressive is the fact that this is no static model. The transmission actually functions and puts power through an all-wheel drive system. Consider our minds effectively blown. This guy actually built a fully-functioning RC car from scratch out of Lego components. Hit the jump to see it for yourself.
Continue reading Lego Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet with working PDK is unreal

Lego Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet with working PDK is unreal originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 08 Jul 2011 14:58:00 EST.
Americans seem to be uniquely obsessed with drag racing in a straight line as a means of measuring automotive performance, but when British magazine EVO decided to line up the latest set of ultra-fast exotic machinery, not a single piece of American iron was present.

Not that we have any complaints about EVO's chosen group of supercars. Representing Italy is the Ferrari 458, and from Germany hails the Porsche 911 Turbo S. These two traditional power players are matched up against the best Britain has to offer; namely the McLaren MP4-12C and Noble M600.

Now that the players have been established, naturally we all want to know which was the quickest. Not surprisingly, the results were dependent on the distance measured just as much as they were by the vehicles themselves. We won't spoil the ending for you, but we will say that it was close and that you should never count out the underdog. Check out the action in the video after the break.
Continue reading EVO drags the 911 Turbo S, McLaren MP4-12C, Ferrari 458, Noble M600

EVO drags the 911 Turbo S, McLaren MP4-12C, Ferrari 458, Noble M600 originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 28 Jun 2011 20:00:00 EST.
If nothing else, the 2012 911 Turbo S Edition 918 Spyder wins the contest for the Porsche with the longest and perhaps clumsiest name ever. But after a day of driving it on good roads all around Stuttgart's farm country and blasting along the no-limit Autobahn, however, we break down like always and decide it's pretty damned cool to possess any 911 Turbo S whatsoever.

What's ultimately best about this admittedly opportunistic offering from Porsche's marketing department is that it doesn't cost one red cent more than the standard 530-horsepower 911 Turbo S - $160,700 for the coupe or $172,100 for the convertible. You just know that they talked about charging more in a meeting. "Perhaps we should charge $10,000 more, c'mon. That's a cool $10 million!" You know they did.

Besides, even more than a normal 911, you probably can't afford one anyway, so there's no reason to start bellyaching. That's because only 918 units of this special Turbo S trim are being shifted out the door at Zuffenhausen, and they are offered only to those magnates who will have their "people" stand in line to fetch a $845,000 Porsche 918 Spyder Hybrid. You do not have to buy the accompanying Turbo S 918 edition, but as a Porsche spokesperson tells us, "so far, all 918 Spyder customers have taken their matching-number Turbo S." (A report we have been given reason to doubt, but...) Naturally, the numbers on the little badges inside match, which is totally cute. Our tester was numbered "000," which automatically made us cooler than anyone.
We don't want much in this world, but a tract of land with 400 acres or so in its borders wouldn't hurt our feelings. Aside from giving us a comfortable buffer between ourselves and any irritating neighbors, a slice of earth that large would allow for one very entertaining driveway - a driveway like the one in the video after the jump. We can't attest to just how much property is attached to the sprawling manse in the clip or whether or not the pilot of the Porsche 911 Turbo can actually lay claim to the kingdom, but we do know the guy has a blast getting around the estate.

The short clip covers a quick loop around the house's exquisite concrete driveway, complete with a small jump, plenty of elevation changes and at least one hairpin. Sounds like a mighty fine way to make the drive to work a little more appetizing each morning. Hit the jump to check it out for yourself.
Continue reading Porsche owner turns long driveway into racetrack

Porsche owner turns long driveway into racetrack originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 21 Jun 2011 17:01:00 EST.
Porsche is being forced to recall a handful of its most sporting models. Certain Porsches equipped with center-locking hubs need to head back to the dealership for a new set of wheels. Why? The hubs can prematurely wear, which means the wheels could separate and take a vacation from the rest of the car.

Affected model year 2010 and 2011 Porsches include:

-Porsche 911 Turbo
-Porsche 911 Turbo S
-Porsche 911 GT2
-Porsche 911 GT2 RS
-Porsche 911 GT3
-Porsche 911 GT3 RS

Basically, all of the most exciting new Porsche 911 coupes that you would consider buying. Apparently, they can become even more exciting, but not in the way we like.

This recall affects 1,702 units. Click past the jump for the full NHTSA bulletin.
Continue reading 1,700 Porsche 911 models with center-locking hubs recalled

1,700 Porsche 911 models with center-locking hubs recalled originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 16 Jun 2011 15:31:00 EST.
To celebrate its tenth anniversary in the ever-hungry, ever-growing Chinese market, Porsche is unleashing a special edition version of its 911 Turbo S. The car comes with the Turbo S' 530-horsepower, twin-turbo flat-six, mated to Porsche's PDK sequential gearbox.

Rather than go crazy with mechanical mods, Porsche is sticking with an appearance package for the commemorative 911. Outside, there's special Gold Bronze Metallic paint set off with flat black and carbon fiber accents. The car rides on sexy black 19-inch Fuchs-style alloys borrowed from the 911 Sport Classic.

Inside, customers get a gold commemorative plaque, and all the Alcantara you could ever want. Porsche sets off the acres of black fabric with contrasting gold stitching.

If you want one, you're pretty much out of luck. Porsche is only going to build 10 examples, and they're all going to China.
Porsche celebrates 10 years in China with special edition 911 Turbo S originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 01 Jun 2011 18:30:00 EST.
Thanks to our crafty team of spy photographers, we now have a clear look at the next-generation Porsche 911 Turbo undergoing its development. It doesn't exactly take a keen eye to notice those two massive air intakes situated on the flanks of the vehicle, and a set of flared rear fenders do their best to hide some serious rubber.

Around the rear of the vehicle, it's clear that the new 911 Turbo will wear exhaust outlets that are integrated into the back valance. Interestingly enough, there's no massive whale tail lurking around, so the engineers must have found a way to package the potent flat-six without needing the extra space.

Speaking of the engine, word has it that Porsche has managed to milk anywhere from 500 to 600 horsepower out of the six-pot, and all of that grunt will likely dump onto the pavement via an all-wheel-drive system. Porsche is slated to pull back the sheets on the base 911 at the Frankfurt Motor Show later this year. That leaves room for the Turbo to bow at the Geneva Motor Show in 2012.

Ruf Rt 12 R - Click above for high-res image gallery

Porsche makes some amazingly capable and exciting machines. The German speedmeisters at Ruf are fans of those cars, but they like to take them, lock them in their <strike>insane asylum</strike> factory and release them back into the world as roadgoing rocketships. The company's latest creation, unveiled on the 2011 Geneva Motor Show floor, is the Ruf Rt 12 R.

Based on the (quite pedestrian by comparison) Porsche 911 Turbo, the Ruf Rt 12 R begins life with the stock 3.8-liter twin-turbo flat-six engine. That unit is good for 500 horsepower and 480 pound-feet of torque (516 lb-ft with the overboost function). After Ruf gets its mitts on the powerplant, output swells to 730 hp and 693 lb-ft of torque. The engine is paired to Porsche's six-speed manual transmission and all-wheel-drive system. And if you're a rich lunatic, you can opt for rear-wheel drive.

Ruf also works its magic on the body of the Rt 12 R. Carbon fiber is applied to the front fenders, hood, luggage cover, seats and is available optionally on the roof. The side and rear windows are plastic instead of glass to further aid in the quest for lightness. This weight reduction, along with the massive increase in power, has helped Ruf claim an impressive 230 mph top speed for the Rt 12 R.

While the Nürburgring circuit seems to be today's venue of choice for sports car bragging rights, the drag strip remains king when it comes to acceleration contests. With that in mind, the folks over at Hennessey Performance have released a video of their latest hopped-up Cadillac V650 Wagon taking on Porsche's venerable 911 Turbo. As expected, the 650-horsepower "Family Station Wagon" nudges the lighter 480-horsepower "Germany's Finest" coupe for the win.

Wait a second.

The video clearly states the Porsche has a "Tiptronic" transmission. This means it is an older, pre-2010 model (note the lack of LED brake lights) that's missing the current lightning-fast dual-clutch PDK gearbox and standard limited-slip rear end. We don't know for sure, but it could even be an aged 2006 model. Thanks to launch control, today's standard 500-horsepower 997 Turbo does 0-60 in less than three seconds... easily. It is also disclosed that the V650 is riding on drag radials - a big advantage over street compounds on a well-used strip.

Nobody's downplaying the ferociousness of the blown wagon, and we welcome this type of challenge, but let's be sure to choose our words more carefully and keep the contestants in the same era. Follow the jump to watch the video.
One is an American-bred land rocket and the other a Teutonic track terror. They are the 2011 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 and 2010 Porsche 911 Turbo, and Motor Trend has pitted them head-to-head.

Former Autoblog scribe and known flip-flop aficionado Jonny Lieberman provides the voice work and the words for the buff book's latest supercar comparo, with Herr Lieberman calling the 911 Turbo "the fastest manual transmission car we've ever tested." Acceleration is one thing, but what about sex appeal? According to Jonny, "... both cars were alternately parked in front of my house for two weeks, but I discovered pink lipstick marks only on the Corvette's windshield. That's right, someone kissed the ZR1."

We have video of both cars running side-by-side for 1,320 feet and the winner is not much of a surprise. The overall winner of the comparison? Well, that's another story, and the results may surprise you. Hop the jump to see the clip of these two going head-to-head [*Warning: Autoplay].

The kids from Motor Trend are at it again. The crew has turned out some pretty tasty videos over the past few months, but nothing like the clip after the jump. Editor-At-Large Arthur St. Antoine and two of his cohorts wrangle three icons of the modern supercar era through the desert outside of Las vegas. The contenders are three German heavyweights - the Porsche 911 Turbo, the Audi R8 5.2 FSI and the new kid on the block, the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG. The guys even managed to convince the California Highway Patrol to close down a section of road for their very own playground. Jealous yet? Yeah, us too.

That's alright, though, because St. Antoine and the rest of the MT posse were kind enough to bring along a few HD cameras so they could share a hard day at the office with the rest of the world. Surprisingly enough, you get plenty of raw driving footage with nothing but the sound of three German engines as your soundtrack. Sure, there are a few auto journo clichés floating around in the voiceover, but hey, it's a video about supercars. What more do you want? Hit the jump to enjoy for yourself.

1973 Porsche 911 Turbo factory prototype

Some people attending the Greenwich Concours d'Elegance last weekend walked past this Porsche 911 Turbo, giving it nary a glance. After all, it was tucked a little out of the way, and even with its tweaked bodywork and decals, if you've seen one 911 Turbo, you've seen them all, right? Well, no. Anyone who paused long enough to read the info card owner Murray Smith placed front of the car learned that, in fact, this Turbo is more special than others. You see, it was the prototype - the first factory-turbocharged Porsche 911 road car, period.

As the story goes, it began life as a regular '73 911S company car driven by Porsche chief engineer Helmuth Bott. From there, it won the Porsche genetics lottery when it was sucked into the automaker's experimental program to serve as the basis for the Turbo. As such, it became the first roadgoing Porsche 911 to get the turbo engine, along with the now-famous widebody treatment and whaletail.

Once its developmental role was complete, it became the 911 Turbo display car for the Paris, Frankfurt, and Tokyo motor shows, but the story doesn't end there. Following a subsequent factory RSR conversion, this 911 Turbo was raced by Aussie Porsche importer Alan Hamilton during the mid-1970s. The icing on the cake for us came at the day's conclusion, when we got to hear the car fire up and get in line for the procession past the podium. It sounded like God on speakerphone. For a 911 with this provenance, that seemed entirely appropriate.

We'll admit it - one of the best parts about being an auto journalist is the ability to spend time with many different cars, most of which are in our possession for a week at a time. And while the automakers trust us to be extremely careful and avoid damage at all costs, sometimes the unavoidable happens. Usually it's a chipped windshield or a bit of curb rash, and even that's enough to make us wince and break out the apology pen. Peter Cheney, a writer for Canada's The Globe and Mail, had one such experience lately, but he wasn't behind the wheel. In fact, he wasn't even in the car.

We're very accustomed to the idea of friends and family members wanting to take a closer look at the cars we're testing, and when Cheney's 16-year-old son wanted to snag a closer look inside the Porsche 911 Turbo his dad was driving that night, Cheney thought nothing of it. That is, until his son came tearing back into the house, a look of panic in his eyes. When Cheney went to investigate what was up, he saw the unthinkable - the big-buck sports car had rocketed through his garage door, causing an reported $11,000 in damage to the car and an additional $2,700 in garage repairs. "Yikes" doesn't quite cover it.

Be sure to head over to The Globe and Mail to read the full account of what happened. It's an incident that we hope never happens to any of us, but most importantly, we're glad no one was hurt. Thanks to everyone for the tips!

We'll admit it - the 2011 Porsche 911 GT2 RS gives us the willies. There's something about the idea of 620 horsepower packaged into a 3,020-pound body that sends shivers down our spines, but we'd be liars if we said we weren't dying to get some seat time. (Or 'Ring time. Whatever.)

Only 500 of these beasts will be produced, retailing from $245,000 when the first deliveries begin this October. And when you consider that the GT2 RS is the most powerful street-legal Porsche available today, we doubt that enthusiasts in the top tax bracket will have any trouble scooping up all 500 examples in relatively short order. For now, Porsche has just released some B-roll footage of the hardcore GT2 doing what it does best on the track, and we highly encourage you to see for yourself, after the jump.
