Porsche has a long and storied history of taking its range-topping 911 sportscar racing, with an enviable record of achievements in tow. The latest machine with which the automaker will take to the track can be seen above: the fifth-generation 2014 911 GT3.

With 475 horsepower strumming through the 3.8-liter six-cylinder boxer engine, this is the pinnacle of naturally aspirated performance from Porsche. It can go from 0 to 60 in just 3.3 seconds, hit a top speed of 195 miles per hour and has lapped the Nürburgring Nordschleife in less than seven and a half minutes.

A dual-clutch PDK transmission (no standard manual gearbox will be offered) with shorter gearing than lesser 911 models sends power to the rear wheels. Providing forward motion isn't the only thing those rear wheels will be doing - Porsche says the 2014 911 GT3 is fitted with the manufacturer's first active rear-wheel steering.

Exterior modifications include unique front and rear fascias, a massive rear wing and a body that's 1.7 inches wider than the regular Carrera to cover the massively wide 20-inch rear wheels. Scroll down below for the official release info from Porsche, but not before scrolling through our high-res gallery of live images above.

Though Porsche won't be feeding us the full 911 enchilada until tomorrow's Geneva-based festivities, we have managed to scare up some official images of the 2014 911 GT3, as well as the all-new 911 GT3 Cup. As Porsche is celebrating 50 years of the 911, we anticipate a good day for great cars.

The new GT3 looks every bit the proper successor to the racy 911 nameplate, with a fixed rear wing large enough to serve cocktails on, a curvaceous body kit and 20-inch wheels that offer a dominating on-road stance. It's a good bet that Porsche will have coaxed something like 450 horsepower from the naturally aspirated, 3.8-liter flat-six engine that hangs over the car's rear axle. Rumor has it that the new GT3 will be PDK-only, as well. Nothing official from Porsche on that front, yet, but we're hoping it's incorrect.

Should the mental quickness and imposing wingery of the standard GT3 not be enough for you, future racecar driver, Porsche is also bringing a GT3 Cup car to Geneva. The German automaker has given just a few scant details about this Cup car - 460 hp on tap, a production run of just 2,400 units - including three images of the kitted out racer. Certainly more and finer details will emerge, when Porsche shines the spotlights on its new 911s tomorrow.
Continue reading 2014 Porsche 911 GT3 and GT3 Cup step out early

2014 Porsche 911 GT3 and GT3 Cup step out early originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 04 Mar 2013 14:40:00 EST.
Enthusiasts of the Porsche 911 have been able to enjoy the new 991 for some time now, but they won't have to wait much longer to see the car in action on the race track. Just last week, Porsche teased us with a video of the upcoming 991-based 911 GT3 Cup racecar, and now we finally have our first official look at the car that will hit the track next year as the 911 GT3 Cup racecar. Porsche has yet to confirm when the street-legal version of this racecar, the 911 GT3, will go on sale.

Built on the same assembly line as the production 911, the 2013 911 GT3 Cup racer will benefit from a more powerful 3.8-liter flat six that produces 460 horsepower, but the big news is that the six-speed automatic gearbox will henceforth be operated by paddle shifters, which the company notes is "the first time for a Porsche brand trophy race car." Aside from the added power (up 10 horses compared to the current 911 GT3 Cup), other changes include an upgraded brake system, new one-piece racing wheels, a newly developed roll cage and driver's seat, along with a new rescue hatch built into the roof.

Teams looking to get their hands on one of these new GT3 Cup cars must first come up with the 181,200 euro asking price (around $234,000 USD) - not bad for a race car of the 911's ilk. Check out more details about the next evolution of this iconic sports car after the jump.
Continue reading Porsche 911 GT3 Cup race car moves to latest 991 chassis

Porsche 911 GT3 Cup race car moves to latest 991 chassis originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 10 Dec 2012 13:30:00 EST.
While we are always brimming with anticipation when Porsche rolls out a new 911, we've sort of become accustomed to the progression of debuts that follows the new model's initial unveiling. The Carrera and Carrera S are usually followed by Cabriolet and Cabriolet S, then the Carrera 4 S and so on. It's a fun little pulling-back of the curtain, but we usually know what to expect.

With that in mind, we bring you this video from the German sportscar marker, displaying its 991-generation GT3 Cup in all its stripped-down, track-ready hotness. All Porsche leaves us with is the YouTube description, "One very special Porsche 911. Not for the road. Only for the racetrack." That's all well and good, but if the last 911 and the one before that have taught us anything, it's that Porsche will be taking "strong enough for a track, made for the road" GT3 variant in the not-too-distant future.

In the mean time, feast your eyes on the video below of this race-ready, rear-engined beast.
Continue reading Porsche teasing next 911 GT3 Cup racecar with track footage

Porsche teasing next 911 GT3 Cup racecar with track footage originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 07 Dec 2012 12:45:00 EST.
Practicing their final notes before they go on song for paying customers, three 991-series Porsche 911 GT3 prototypes were caught at a filling station in Catalunya, Spain almost completely uncovered. According to the photographer (working with an iPhone), two of them (foreground in the photo above) were wearing a host of extras from the options list, while the third appears to be a prototype set up halfway between a traditional 911 and a GT3: it has five-bolt GT3-style wheels and central exhaust, but standard 911 front and rear bumpers and rear wing.

Notice that the little bit of camo on the proper GT3s covers the lower region of the rear bumpers and, we'd imagine, some venting. The tea leaves appear to unanimously point to the 3.8-liter six-cylinder hanging out back, but the exact horsepower rating is hidden behind the vagaries of "somewhere between 450 and 500." Remember, no matter how many horses there are, there will only be a seven-speed PDK available to stir them to action.

Meanwhile, in Germany, the 911 Turbo was caught on the streets of Stuttgart and even the basic black paint job could not pull a shrink the fulsome girth of its ample rear end. Sporting a bit of tape both front and rear, the general details can all be seen, including the redesigned exhaust treatment. We expect to get more colorful looks at both the GT3 and 911 soon enough, but for now there is the high-res gallery above and the two spy videos below.
Continue reading Porsche 911 Turbo, 911 GT3 caught with minimal camo [w/video]

Porsche 911 Turbo, 911 GT3 caught with minimal camo [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 25 Sep 2012 10:15:00 EST.
The Brumos Racing Porsche 911 GT3 Cup racer is not only very good at getting around a track, it's very good at getting to the checkered flag in first place. To celebrate the team's 50-plus-year history and winning last year's Rolex Grand-Am championship, Brumos, in conjunction with Porsche, is offering prepping the final five U.S.-spec 2012 911 GT3 Cup cars just like its racers.

The means a 4.0-liter flat-six with more torque and more than 450 horsepower, a Motec data acquisition system, carbon interior bits, a front debris screen, a rev-blipping system for better downshifts and new brake and steering sensors. It will be finished in the white-with-twin-stripes Brumos livery, and offered for $265,259 plus tax for five fortunate buyers. That price will also get owners to a handover ceremony and dinner at Porsche Motorsport North America with Brumos Racing vice president Hurley Haywood and drivers Leh Keen and Andrew Davis.

The cars will be eligible for various domestic racing series. If you want to see what one can do given the right pilot, check out Porsche Motorsport North America driver Patrick Long delivering coffee to his boss. Otherwise, there's a press release below with more details.
Continue reading Brumos to offer special edition Porsche 911 GT3 Cup racer

Brumos to offer special edition Porsche 911 GT3 Cup racer originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 05 Jul 2012 18:00:00 EST.
One of the benefits of being a Porsche factory driver is that you get to get coffee for Hurley Haywood. And if you're Le Mans winner Patrick Long, according to this little spot for the Porsche Sport Driving School, you get do it from behind the wheel of a 911 GT3 and on a damp, drift-ready track.

But since Patrick Long apparently lives under a bridge, we'd like to know where he puts the troll and if he lets the three billy goats gruff pass whenever they want. And where he gets his coffee. Have a look below to see the video.
Continue reading Patrick Long has the best morning commute ever

Patrick Long has the best morning commute ever originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 10 May 2012 16:57:00 EST.
We know, we know. We miss Top Gear, too. But it'll be another month or so before the hit BBC program comes back for another season. Fortunately, that's what Fifth Gear is for.

The Channel 5 program was launched in 2002 when BBC canceled the original Top Gear. The better-known program came back on later that year, but by then, Channel 5 had already poached a few of Clarkson's former co-hosts and started its own show.

In the latest segment, former Top Gear host and racing driver Tiff Needell has taken to the wheel of the Porsche 911 GT3 RS 4.0 - the ultimate in-car-nation of the previous Elfen - on a wet track. (It is, after all, in England. And it's not the summer.) To say he enjoyed the experience would be an understatement, but we'll let you see that for yourself in the video after the jump.
Continue reading Tiff Needell hoons it up in the Porsche 911 GT3 RS 4.0

Tiff Needell hoons it up in the Porsche 911 GT3 RS 4.0 originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 23 Nov 2011 20:13:00 EST.
If you thought your local country club parking lot or swanky bistro driveway was filled with Porsche 911s, that's nothing compared to the proliferation of the rear-engined sports car on race tracks around the world. Porsche claims that, with over 2,200 examples sold, the 911 GT3 Cup - never mind any other racing variant - is far and away the most popular customer racing car on earth. And now it's set to get just a bit more popular.

Though the next-generation 911 is just around the corner, Porsche's racing department has updated the GT3 Cup one last time. The principal difference is a new 100-liter fuel tank that now complies with an even broader rage of racing regulations. Otherwise it's largely the same as the model we recently drove, packing the same 450-horsepower flat-six as the GT3 RS road car on which it's based, but with 18-inch alloys wearing Michelin slicks and mounted to an adjustable competition-spec suspension. Carbon-ceramic brakes are also available depending on the series.

The new GT3 Cup will be available for delivery to privateer racing teams as of next month, with a price tag starting at 161,750 Euro ($232k by today's rates). Follow the jump for the full press release and scope out the quintet of high-resolution images in the gallery for a closer look. Or better yet, just head down to the local race track, because there's bound to be a few of 'em lapping down there at any given time.
Continue reading Porsche updates competition-spec 911 GT3 Cup before new model arrives

Porsche updates competition-spec 911 GT3 Cup before new model arrives originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 10 Aug 2011 17:28:00 EST.
Porsche is being forced to recall a handful of its most sporting models. Certain Porsches equipped with center-locking hubs need to head back to the dealership for a new set of wheels. Why? The hubs can prematurely wear, which means the wheels could separate and take a vacation from the rest of the car.

Affected model year 2010 and 2011 Porsches include:

-Porsche 911 Turbo
-Porsche 911 Turbo S
-Porsche 911 GT2
-Porsche 911 GT2 RS
-Porsche 911 GT3
-Porsche 911 GT3 RS

Basically, all of the most exciting new Porsche 911 coupes that you would consider buying. Apparently, they can become even more exciting, but not in the way we like.

This recall affects 1,702 units. Click past the jump for the full NHTSA bulletin.
Continue reading 1,700 Porsche 911 models with center-locking hubs recalled

1,700 Porsche 911 models with center-locking hubs recalled originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 16 Jun 2011 15:31:00 EST. Imagine a vast frozen plain of iced-over lakes located 50 miles from the Arctic Circle. Now imagine 500 acres of that expanse converted into a playground for cars. The region is known as Lapland, and it stretches across Norway, Finland, Sweden and Russia. Laponie Ice Driving has turned a portion of it into five icy tracks, two of which are full-scale replicas of famous racing circuits: Le Castellet and the Hockenheim Ring.

Fifth Gear's Tiff Needell ventured out to this frozen tundra to experience the traction-deficient racing for himself. Using a Porsche 911 GT3, Tiff set out to establish a quick time around the iced Hockenheim replica. Former BTTC racer Yvan Muller is on hand to show him how it's done. Click past the jump for the slick action.

Rumors of a more powerful, special edition Porsche 911 GT3 RS have been circulating for months, and now the spec sheet has purportedly been leaked online. The order form is ostensibly for what's being dubbed the GT3 RS 4.0, packing a bored-out flat-six with 500 horsepower - a 200cc increase in displacement and 50 horses more than the existing GT3 RS, which itself already packs 15 more ponies than the standard GT3.

The price sheet also lists a €150,000 sticker before tax (equivalent to $217k), or €190,000 with a 20-percent value-added tax attached, and details options like a nav system, ceramic brakes and a nose-lift apparatus. The sheet was posted on the Teamspeed forum, but while the intrepid poster claims its authenticity, a debate is raging over its potential falsification, pointing out, for example, certain discrepancies (such as the 2011 model year instead of 2012, output listed in BHP instead of Porsche's usual PS, and "breaks" instead of "brakes") that have raised doubts.

Whether the spec sheet is authentic or not, we should be finding out soon enough, so stay tuned and watch this space for more.
Watching a Porsche 911 GT3 manhandled on public roads is a wonderful way to spend time. How much time? How about 16 minutes and 24 seconds? That's what Olaf Dobberkau and Alexandra König - the winners of the 2010 Deutsche Rallye Series - have compiled for our viewing pleasure. Unlike other motorsports videos, it's mercifully devoid of a crap soundtrack, and instead it's filled with the sonorous sounds of the GT3's flat six and the squeals of the tires fighting for traction. It's an endless series of slides and drifts, and it's awaiting you after the jump. Thanks for the tip, Cpmarcelm!

The Porsche 911 is many things to many people. The quintessential sportscar. The embodiment of German precision. A terrible design tweaked to perfection over the course of decades. And the most successful racing sports car ever devised.

What you're looking at is the latest iteration of the latter: the 2011 Porsche 911 GT3 RSR. The differences as compared to the 2010 model aren't extensive, but a slight edge could be enough to pull ahead of the rest of the field on the world's racing circuits. Rather than switching to the new direct-injection powerplant as employed on the streetable 911, the RSR sticks with a 4.0-liter version of the old boxer six, but with an re-optimized ECU, intake and exhaust, now producing 455 horsepower - five more than the 2010 model.

The bodywork has also been revised, with the rear end taking cues from the latest roadgoing 911 to include new LED rear lights while the front wheels are wider than its predecessors. It'll set you back a good half-million to get one new, but if you've got the outgoing model, Porsche will gladly upgrade it to the 2011 spec as well. Follow the jump for the full details and specs, or take a closer look in the high-resolution image gallery below.

Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera chases a Porsche 911 GT3 through Paris - Click above to watch video after the jump

Before we go salivating all over the thought of two of Europe's best and brightest going the distance through the City of Lights, we should probably start off with an obligatory "don't try this at home." The kids you see sliding around the Parisian streets in the video after the jump are trained professionals working in a semi-controlled environment, so do us all a favor and keep your reenactments confined to your Need For Speed marathons.

That said, the video is a well-shot interpretation of what a full lap of Paris might look like as a Porsche 911 GT3 and a Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera go fender-to-fender. Our early money was on the Raging Bull strolling away with the checkered flag, but Stuttgart's finest seemed to have no problem keeping the big bad Italian behind its winged tail-end as the two snake around the French capitol. Hit the jump to see the action for yourself.

There's just something about watching a Porsche 911 play in the dirt that flips all the right switches. Seeing that iconic shape throw rooster tails of silt triggers a sort of Pavlovian response brought on by years of daydreaming over shots of the Rothman 953 slinging sand in Africa. Consider that doubly true for Jeff Zwart's Pikes Peak-winning GT3.

Zwart has just released a video of one of his shake-down runs prior to this year's Pikes Peak event. The course runs up some godforsaken mountain in the middle of the California wilderness, and while Zwart isn't seen flogging the life out of the car, it's more than clear that both he and the machine are in their element. Click past the jump to enjoy the action.

The 2011 Cadillac CTS-V Coupe is a lot of things. It's a luxury two-door that's also a muscle car. It's a supercharged beast with a fire-breathing LSA mounted under the hood. And it's also a smoke machine. Monticello Motor Club invited a slew of vehicles out for its first annual Drift with the Supercars event, and while a few dedicated drift cars showed up, a handful of other lust-worthy rides arrived to ruin their rubber. The CTS-V Coupe was on hand, sharing the track with a Ferrari 575 Maranello, C6 Corvette, 2011 Porsche 911 GT3 RS and a Mercedes-Benz CLK63 AMG Black Series.

The Cadillac fared exceptionally well against the rest of the competition and took home the title of Best Drift in New Car. Check out the tire-shredding, sideways action in the beautifully shot video after the jump.

Porsche recently dropped off a new 911 GT3 at Jay Leno's garage where racer Justin Bell picked it up for a bit of a road trip. Before the trip, Leno and Bell discuss their preference for normally aspirated manual transmission Porsches over the more powerful turbos and dual-clutch PDKs.

On his way to Laguna Seca for the spring American Le Mans Series event, Bell finds a perfect little road for his own private hill climb and gushes over the responsiveness of the non-turbo engine and enormous Brembo binders. At Laguna, Bell hooks up with factory pilot Patrick Long to discuss the differences between the Flying Lizard Motorsports 911 he races and the roadgoing GT3 which spawned it. Even within the limits of the rules set out by the ACO, Flying Lizard and Porsche have managed to find a lot of creative ways to extract more speed out of their competition machine.
We've seen footage of Jeff Zwart practicing for his recent run up Pikes Peak, now filmmaker Will Roegge has delivered unto us the footage from Zwart's Time Attack 2WD class record.

Zwart ran his 911 GT3 up 12.42 miles and through 156 turns in just 11:31.095, averaging over 65 miles per hour. But you don't need us to tell you about it - these things tend to speak for themselves. Follow the jump to watch a record being set.

There's a fine line between a sportscar and a supercar. Porsche is one of the few automakers that straddles the line, but an elite cadre of tuners seem to take pleasure in laying down strips of burnt rubber to blur it beyond recognition. Names like Gemballa and Ruf come to mind, but 9ff has emerged as the new power player, in one sense or another. And the German tuning house has just let its latest out into the world.

Called the GTurbo, what we're looking at essentially is a tuning program for the 911 GT3 and its even more extreme brother, the GT3 RS. Bolting on a pair of turbochargers, 9ff can take a GT3 up to 750, 850 or even 1,000 horsepower. That's Veyron-league power, only without the all-wheel drive, the ground-grabbing track and the aero designed to go with it. Fortunately, 9ff has part of the answer in the form of a corresponding kit, including new bumpers front and rear, side skirts, and new quarter panels, with extra vents all around to keep the intercooler breathing and the air flowing. In full-fat 1,000hp spec, 9ff says its GTurbo will hit 100 kilometers per hour (62 miles per hour) in a scant 2.9 seconds and, theoretically at least, hit 392 kilometers per hour (243 miles per hour) flat out - which may seem like a heck of a claim until you realize that one of their own modded 1,000hp 911 Turbo hit just that at the Papenburg test track.

The aero kit sells for 8,900 euros (~$12k), with five-spoke 19-inch rims for 4,980 euros (~$7k) and a specially-designed set of central-locking wheels for 5,950 euros (~$8k), all before taxes and painting. We're afraid to ask how much the turbos cost, though. Details in the press release after the jump and photos in the gallery below.
