The difference between an artist and any other person is not about skill or ability to wield whatever instruments are required to render their work, it's about how an artist perceives things around them. So while most of us may look at, say, the front hood of a Porsche and see a hood, an artist may see it as a canvas.

That was, at least, evidently the case with a group of 19 Latin American artists who, curated by Argentinean painter Jorge Gómez, turned 24 hoods from the 911 GT2 into works of art. Their media included materials ranging from acrylic to vulcanized rubber, and the results are being displayed from now until January 8th at the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart. If your plans don't include a trip to Deutschland, though, you can take a virtual trip through the high-res image gallery.
Continue reading Where some see the hood of a Porsche 911 GT2, others see a canvas

Where some see the hood of a Porsche 911 GT2, others see a canvas originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 23 Sep 2011 07:57:00 EST.
Porsche is being forced to recall a handful of its most sporting models. Certain Porsches equipped with center-locking hubs need to head back to the dealership for a new set of wheels. Why? The hubs can prematurely wear, which means the wheels could separate and take a vacation from the rest of the car.

Affected model year 2010 and 2011 Porsches include:

-Porsche 911 Turbo
-Porsche 911 Turbo S
-Porsche 911 GT2
-Porsche 911 GT2 RS
-Porsche 911 GT3
-Porsche 911 GT3 RS

Basically, all of the most exciting new Porsche 911 coupes that you would consider buying. Apparently, they can become even more exciting, but not in the way we like.

This recall affects 1,702 units. Click past the jump for the full NHTSA bulletin.
Continue reading 1,700 Porsche 911 models with center-locking hubs recalled

1,700 Porsche 911 models with center-locking hubs recalled originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 16 Jun 2011 15:31:00 EST.
No one ever said getting behind the wheel of a Porsche was going to be cheap. Especially not a 911 GT2. But if the $245k that the new GT2 RS road car would set you back strikes you as a bit steep, check out the latest rig from Fanatec.

The German gamewear concern has a penchant for making steering wheel set-ups for your favorite gaming platform, like the 911 Turbo and Turbo S wheels we're reported on previously. But the latest takes the cake.

Modeled on the 911 GT2, this wheel gets all the details down pat, and then some. The 12-inch rim is covered in hand-stitched Alcantara, and three force-feedback motors are there to provide as darn-near-real an experience as we've ever seen.

It can work with the XBox 360, PlayStation 3 or your computer, but like the car it's modeled on, it don't come cheap: $250 is the retail price for the wheel alone, which can be hooked up with pedals and shifter if you've got those already. If you don't, the full $500 Clubsport edition gives you the foot gear and a variety of shifting choices, including paddles, a sequential lever and an H-gate. Check it out for yourself in the gallery below.

Fact: We would run many a gauntlet in order to get some on-track seat time behind the wheel of a Porsche 911 GT2 RS. Hell, we'd be overjoyed just to get a secondhand, passenger seat experience of what this monstrous 911 is capable of. And if we had our choice of drivers, Walter Röhrl, Porsche's senior test driver and decorated racer, would be our first pick.

Until that day comes, however, we'll just sit back and watch this video of Porsche's tame racing driver piloting the 630-horsepower GT2 RS around Luk Driving Center. Buckle up and watch this in-car video for yourself, after the jump.

Honestly, most of the phrases that come to mind when describing the 2011 Porsche 911 GT2 RS involve some sort of non-FCC-approved dialogue. But then again, can you blame us? Certainly not. And after reading the specs and seeing B-roll footage of the meanest Porsche around, we're having a hard time keeping the drool off of our keyboards.

620 horsepower. Rear-wheel drive. 3,020 pounds. $#*%^!, indeed. Hit the jump to watch Porsche's latest trailer of the GT2 RS, and try to keep the expletives to a minimum.

We'll admit it - the 2011 Porsche 911 GT2 RS gives us the willies. There's something about the idea of 620 horsepower packaged into a 3,020-pound body that sends shivers down our spines, but we'd be liars if we said we weren't dying to get some seat time. (Or 'Ring time. Whatever.)

Only 500 of these beasts will be produced, retailing from $245,000 when the first deliveries begin this October. And when you consider that the GT2 RS is the most powerful street-legal Porsche available today, we doubt that enthusiasts in the top tax bracket will have any trouble scooping up all 500 examples in relatively short order. For now, Porsche has just released some B-roll footage of the hardcore GT2 doing what it does best on the track, and we highly encourage you to see for yourself, after the jump.

2011 Porsche 911 GT2 RS - Click above to enlarge

We're guessing that as you read this one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse is on hold with a Porsche dealer trying to see how much he can get in trade for a 2011 Porsche 911 GT2 RS. With only 500 such models slated to be made, he probably won't get much - and when he pleads, "But my steed destroys human souls!", the dealer will reply, "Ours does, too..."

The 3,020-pound GT2 RS gets 620 twin-turbocharged horses from its 3.6-liter engine, making it the most powerful Porsche you can legally put on the roads. That's 90 more horses pushing 154 pounds less weight than in the previous version, and it gets five percent better fuel economy. Ground control is handled with tires specifically created for the car, carrying it from zero to sixty miles per hour in 3.4 seconds. On the one hand, that's 0.3 slower than the Porsche Turbo S; on the other, there's a 205 mph top speed and a 7:18 'Ring time.

Note too the matte carbon fiber bodywork and the black and red Alcantara interior. It'll go on proper show in Moscow later this year, and it'll run $245,000 when deliveries begin in October. Follow the jump for the release, and be on the lookout for three horsemen and a water-cooled boxer...

We don't have much in the way of details, but a singular shot snapped at a dealer event yesterday shows that the baddest Porsche 911 ever to grace the tarmac is coming this September.

According to a tipster, the GT2 RS will carry a price tag of 240,000 euro when it arrives later this year and will supposedly pack enough power to topple the Carrera GT. Earlier reports indicate that the revised GT2, recently caught testing at the Nürburgring, will put out over 560 horsepower and 530 pound-feet of torque. However, it's safe to assume those figures will be increased In RS trim and we can expect a fully-adjustable suspension, roll cage and possibly some active aerodynamics. The press introduction is apparently scheduled for May 14th, so official details on Porsche's newest rear-wheel drive road warrior should be forthcoming.

UPDATE: A forum member at TeamSpeed has some preliminary stats from the launch in Leipzig. The new GT2 RS is reportedly packing 620 hp and will come in nearly 200 pounds lighter than the current GT2. The 0-62 mph time is pegged at 3.2 seconds with a rumored 'Ring time of... wait for it... 7:22 - the same as the Dodge Viper ACR.

Our spies have just captured the slightly revised Porsche 911 GT2 doing what it does best - storming around a track (the Nürburgring, specifically). The removal of foglamps and a more pronounced chin spoiler set the hardcore 911 apart from its lesser Turbo brethren, and rest assured, the big GT2 wing is still intact.

Official details haven't been released just yet, but we'd expect the GT2 to use the same twin-turbo flat-six as the 911 Turbo S. This means output will be around 530 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque, but remember - the GT2 should be significantly lighter than the Turbo. GT2 models ditch all-wheel drive for a rear-drive setup, and the interior is stripped out for even more weight savings. (Hey, Porsche - if those black prototype wheels don't weigh too much, we'll gladly take those, too.)

The GT2 looks like it's in the final stages of testing, so we wouldn't be shocked if the production model showed up at a certain European auto show (*ahem* - Paris) later this year.

As if the Porsche 911 GT2 wasn't fast enough in stock form, German tuning house Wimmer Racing Technology has unveiled a new €30,000 ($40,000) package for the Stuttgart supercar to take its already superlative performance to stratospheric levels.

With a re-calibrated ECU, upgraded turbos, new cylinder heads, camshafts and a custom exhaust, the Wimmer RS GT2 produces a whopping 680 horsepower and 642 lb-ft of torque, capable of propelling the twin-turbo rocket up to sixty in a scant 3.4 seconds on its way to a top speed of 221 mph. Accompanying the engine mods are a carbon-fiber aero kit, H&R suspension and 20-inch Sportec wheels. Check out the details in the press release after the jump and the images in the gallery below.

Gallery: Wimmer RS Porsche 911 GT2

[Source: Auto Motor und Sport via WCF]
Continue reading Wimmer Takes All: 680hp Porsche 911 GT2 goes up to 221 mph

Wimmer Takes All: 680hp Porsche 911 GT2 goes up to 221 mph originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 18 May 2009 10:01:00 EST. I fiddle a bit with the seat and steering column adjustments until I'm comfortable, then double-check that my seatbelt is secured. It's hot and humid, but that's not why I'm perspiring - this cold sweat is a sign that my body's survival instincts are on edge, and for good reason. Fortunately, I've received personalized instruction from a quartet of legendary drivers and a complete technical briefing courtesy of Porsche Motorsports engineers, and there's little left to be learned without actually driving the car. I depress the heavily-weighted clutch pedal, muscle the short-throw shifter into 1st gear, bring the revs up, and...

A typical car-nut daydream? No - this was Autoblog's trip to the North American introduction of the third-generation Porsche 911 GT2. The folks from Zuffenhausen brought their latest no-holds-barred supercar to Daytona Beach, and allowed a select group of journalists to compare this latest effort to two other very capable 911 variants - the Turbo Coupe and GT3.

Gallery: 2008 Porsche GT2 intro

Porsche provided the vehicles for testing. The twin-turbocharged 530-horsepower RWD supercar (and make no mistake, it is a supercar) will make its public debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September and start arriving at dealers in Europe in November. For all its performance, the 204-mph GT2 is rated 18.8 US mpg according to the New European Driving Cycle, which strikes us as not bad at all for a car whose fuel economy is the furthest thing from most drivers' minds. Pricing in Germany will begin at €159,100. Factor in the 19% VAT and the market price is €189,496. Follow the jump for Porsche's official press release, and check out the gallery below for the official photos, which have now been upgraded to high-res.

Previously:
They're clearer than the ones included in the brochure sca, which you can view by click ing here. The car'sessentials break down as follows:

2008 Porsche 911 GT2

3.6-liter twin turbo flat six

530 horsepower at 5,600 rpm

505 lb.-ft. of torque from 2,200 to 4,500 rpm

0-60 mph in 3.6 seconds

0-100 mph in 7.1 seconds

Top speed of 204 mph

Curb weight:: 3,175 lbs

Titanium exhaust

6-speed manual gearbox

Launch control system

The brochure spells it all out in greater detail, but suffice to say that the new GT2 is one of the most serious sports cars to come from Porsche -- ever, and it appears to be more than worthy of the "Respect Required" tagline the automaker applies to it. Click the gallery below for the newest photos. We'll add to it as more become available.

[Source: Carscoop]

Gallery: 2008 Porsche 911 GT2

First official images of the 2008 Porsche 911 GT2 originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 14 Jul 2007 09:29:00 EST.
