As we discovered earlier this month, the 2010 Porsche 911 Turbo is one heck of a fast car. The quickest Porsche has ever produced, in fact. So it would take considerable moxie to try and improve on it. Fortunately, 9ff has such moxie, as demonstrated with the company's new Speed9.

We brought you initial info on the Speedster-inspired tuner car a few days ago, but 9ff has been kind enough to grace us with a few more details on its latest endeavor. Set to be unveiled this coming weekend at the Essen Motor Show - Germany's equivalent of SEMA - the 9ff Speed9 starts with the new 911 Turbo cabrio and updates with a series of performance and body mods to take it to the next level.

Improving on the 997.5's 3.8-liter direct injection twin-turbo boxer six, the 9ff pumps output up from 500 horsepower up to 650 ponies with a simple upgrade to the ECU and new air filter, exhaust and catalytic converter. The result? Try 0-100 km/h (62mph) in 3.3 seconds en route to a top speed of 330 km/h (205 mph) - limited only by the speedster's slick open body-style. But those sleek looks and extra oomph will cost you: 239,000 euros - the equivalent of $360,000 in American greenbacks. That's two-and-a-half times the price of a stock 911 turbo cab, but if cost is no object, the Speed9 could be just your ticket.

If you love the spirit of SEMA but tend to lean towards more European tastes, Essen is the show for you. The annual aftermarket show in Germany always brings out an enticing crop of European tuner cars, and 9ff isn't about to let it go by without making its mark.

The Porsche tuner is hitting Essen with the Speed9, a slick speedster inspired by the legendary 356 (circa 1955) and based on the latest 997 Turbo cabrio. Naturally, 9ff started in the rear, boosting the 3.6-liter twin-turbo flat six from 473hp stock up to a whopping 650, all by tweaking the ECU and swapping out the air filter, exhaust and catalytic converter. The tuners have also fitted adjustable stabilizers front and rear with double springs at each corner, coupled with upgraded brakes.

There's no word yet on what effect the mods will have on performance, but you can't miss the body kit 9ff has developed. They've done away with the rear seats to give the cabrio a speedster-like profile, while fitting a new front air dam, side skirts and rear apron. No word on price either, but you can expect it to be commensurately expensive, with much of the range customizable to order.

It's faster to 60 mph than a Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 or Ferrari Enzo. Porsche's fastest offerings, including the Carrera GT, GT2 and road-going 911 GT1 "Strassenversion" will only see its LED tail lamps during a typical sprint. Only the unlikely - make that incomprehensible - meeting of an SSC Ultimate Aero or Bugatti Veyron at a stop light will concern this car's owner that he or she has met a worthy adversary. The vehicle is the new seventh-generation 2010 Porsche 911 Turbo. Sporting a new 500-horsepower engine mated to the automaker's lightning-fast dual-clutch PDK transmission, the all-wheel drive coupe devours the magic 0-60 mph benchmark in less than 3.2 seconds.

Porsche invited us to a track outside Lisbon, Portugal to savor their latest Turbo iteration. While the physical appearance remains virtually unchanged to the uninformed eye, hidden under the familiar sheet metal is a new powertrain that makes one of the world's best sports car even more exceptional. What are the new mechanical specifications of the powerplant, and where does it come from? What's it like to drive on a track? Is the PDK transmission really better than the six-speed manual? Follow the jump for all of the answers...

2010 Porsche 911 Turbo - Click above for high-res image gallery

With its new-for-2010 direct-injected, 3.8-liter turbocharged flat-six, the upgraded 2010 Porsche 911 Turbo has fired a shot across the bow of the world's supercar armada. Promising better performance, better fuel economy and better emissions, this tweaked 997 should hold the fort until the 998 appears in a couple of years.

With 20 extra horsepower motivating the lightened (by 55 pounds) all-wheel drive coupe, it should be noticeably quicker than its 2009 counterpart. How much quicker? Autocar is reporting that it's a full ten seconds faster around the Nurburgring Nordschleife than a 2009 Porsche 911 Turbo. That means the new Turbo just breaks into the 7:30s at 7m 39sec.

That still puts it behind the rival Nissan GT-R at 7:28 after former Formula One driver, Toshio Suzuki, went out and shaved more than a second off the car's previous best. Of course, Porsche still has a possible Turbo S model in the works and already produces a wicked 911 GT3 RS that can probably close the official gap between them and Godzilla.
The 2010 Porsche 911 Turbo differs from the Six Million Dollar Man in one crucial way; while it's better, faster, stronger, it can also be much, much yellower if you prefer. However, the last thing you want to be is yellow if you plan to explore the Turbo's capabilities. These 500 hp respond best to firm commands, the new Porsche Torque Vectoring responds to firm inputs, and the Coupe's $132,800 price tag ($143,800 for the Cab) respond to a bank account with the firmest of foundations. Perhaps our favorite thing about the car: no gas guzzler tax. That's hot for so many reasons. Not to diss yellow, but we'll stick with a manual black-on-black Coupe with the center-lugged wheels. The one on the Frankfurt show floor wouldn't be a problem, either.
And a 996 Turbo S, too. But so far, we have not seen a Porsche 997 Turbo S. Reason? Dunno, though we imagine that a more powerful turbo would step on the toes (among other parts) of the hard rocking GT2. Especially as the fastest of all 911s "only" makes 40 more horsepower than the plain ol' Turbo. And besides, 520 horses is probably pushing pretty hard against the edge of the performance-to-reliability ratio that OEMs have to worry about (unlike, say, tuners).

Er, that used to be the case. But, with the pending release of the new 911 Turbo and its 500 hp newly enlarged 3.8-liter direct injected flat-six, 520 horses doesn't sound like a lot. Just doin' a bit' o' speculatin' here, but if Porsche was able to squeeze 520 ponies out of the old motor in the 3.6-liter, well then, they could certainly squeeze who knows how much out of a special edition of the new one without boiling the water-cooled turbines.

According to Team Speed, a new 997.5 Turbo S is coming, and coming soon. When? Spring 2010. And how much power? Pure speculation, but 540 to 550 hp sounds about right. And figure on standard ceramic brakes, RS-style center lock wheels, and some sort of unique bodywork (more strakes?) to differentiate it from mere mortal Turbos. But like all rumors, this could prove totally false. But if it's true, look for the Porsche Turbo S to going up against Nissan's similarly steroidal Godzilla GT-R Spec-V on that one road in Germany...

[Source: Team Speed]

Rumormill: Porsche 911 Turbo S coming? originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 26 Aug 2009 17:59:00 EST. We're sure some of you are cool enough to be "friends" with Porsche on Facebook, and if you are, you were treated to a smattering of new photographs of the 2010 Turbo, both in Coupe and <strike>Convertible</strike> Cabriolet form this morning.

Predictably, the images are very beautiful and totally worth checking out. More importantly, we finally have shots of all three interiors. When we say "all three," what we mean are all three transmission choices: the six-speed manual, the silly Tiptronic push-pull steering wheel buttons and the new for 2010 "proper" right-is-up, left-is-down column-mounted flapper-paddles. Have a look, and don't get too skeeved out by all the red leather.

As we've discussed, the current Porsche Turbo is much too slow. Rather than let the aftermarket have all the glory, Porsche has decided to up the Turbo's performance for 2010. But not just in terms of power. Egged on no doubt by the pesky Nissan GT-R, Porsche is performing a complete character change for their newest Turbo, including less weight, RWD bias and a more sporting character.

The big news is of course the engine. Goodbye 3.6-liter six, it's been fun. Hello 3.8-liter directed injected flat-six from the Carrera S. Coupled to two variable-vane turbos, power is now 500 hp. And because it's direct injected, mileage increases from 22.1 mpg to 24.1 mpg with the manual. Should you opt for Porsche's 7-speed Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (dual-clutch) gearbox, mileage improves from the old Tiptronic's 20.8 mpg to a very impressive 24.8 mpg. Also gone (kinda) are the silly dual-action faux-paddle shifters. Replacing them are F1 style right-is-up, left-is-down wheel-mounted paddles -- a welcome improvement, though we'd still prefer column-mounted shifters like on Ferraris and Godzilla. And you can still opt for the inferior dual-action buttons if you like.

The fun continues with a reprogrammed Porsche Traction Management system that distributes torque between the front and rear differentials via an electric multi-plate clutch. Still not convinced? The PSM (Porsche Stability Management) has been re-calibrated to provide more thrills. New RS Spyder rims are also available to decrease unsprung weight. In a word, yes please.

Pricing is listed for the coupe and cabriolet at $132,800 and $143,800 respectively, with an on-sale date of November 2009 in Germany and January 2010 here in the United States. We'll get a first glimpse of the new Turbo this September at the Frankfurt Auto Show. Until then, read the full press release after the jump.

One of the ways that Porsche became the most profitable automaker in the world is by learning how to offer customers a wide range of customization options for their cars... for a premium prices. The latest in its line of performance-oriented parts is a new wheel available for the 911 Turbo. The new 19" forged aluminum roller has a design based on the RS Spyder LMP2 race car. Porsche has apparently devised a new center locking mechanism that uses a bolt rather than a locking nut. The wheels are certainly attractive, but they won't come cheap. Starting in January, European 911 Turbo owners will be able to get the new wheels from a price starting at €2,950 ($3,700). There's no word on whether Americans will be offered these wheels officially, but there's no doubt that anyone willing to drop enough coin at the counter at their local Porsche store will be able to get them somehow.

Gallery: Porsche RS Spyder design wheels

[Source: Porsche]
Continue reading Porsche RS Spyder center lock wheels now available for the street

Porsche RS Spyder center lock wheels now available for the street originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 29 Oct 2008 14:32:00 EST.
You wouldn't be mistaken for thinking that the Porsche 911 Turbo was already one of the fastest, best-performing sportscars on the road today. But that's where uber-tuners like Hamann - who've tuned everything from the MINI Cooper to the Ferrari 612 Scaglietti - come in to confound expectations and shatter assumptions.

Not satisfied with "only" 480 horsepower, the Hamann Stallion packs a whopping 630 of its namesakes. To achieve that 150hp boost in output, Hamann swapped out the variable nozzle turbochargers and replaced them with... bigger variable nozzle turbochargers. They've also fitted a new stainless steel exhaust, a new air filter and, of course, tinkered with the ECU. But they didn't stop at the engine. Hamann also chopped the roof down by 8 cm (about two and a half inches), bolted on a new aero kit and fitted huge 20-inch three-piece modular rims. They've also done up the interior in ostrich skin, applied some racing stripes and, oh yeah, also Lambo'd out the doors. The result? Well, the suddenly ordinary Turbo hits sixty in 3.9 seconds, but the Stallion cuts that down to 3.3. Not too bad for a day's work, but we dare not ask how much all these mods would cost over the price of a stock Turbo.

Well, you dial up TechArt, which has just pulled the wraps off a cabrio version of the menacing Turbo-based GT Street. The ragtop, like the coupe, makes a ridiculous 630 horsepower, and while TechArt hasn't officially announced the torque figure, we're assuming it's also upwards of 600 lb-ft. So, if you're in a rush, there's no need to reach for that blow dryer. Just head out to the car, put the roof down, aim it where you want to go, and punch it. Your hair should be bone-dry by the time you hit the quarter mile mark or so. If it isn't, just keep pushing -- it'll finally top out at 214 mph. Your 'do might look like this if you hit maximum warp, though, so use your judgment when applying pressure to the loud pedal. We'll have full specs on the GT Street Cabrio when TechArt formally introduces it in Geneva. Until then, you can see the coupe's numbers here.

Gallery: TechArt GT Street Cabriolet

[Source: TechArt]
Geneva '08 Preview: TechArt GT Street Cabriolet originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 22 Feb 2008 10:57:00 EST. If you're placing a new car order, adding the kit will tack an additional €4,500 to the bottom line. (Existing Turbo owners can acquire the unpainted, uninstalled kit as an aftermarket item for €4,100, as well.) The added expense gets you a new lip spoiler and a new engine cover which incorporates a fixed rear wing. Developed in Porsche's wind tunnel, the kit reduces lift while leaving the car's overall drag coefficient unchanged. Plus, the subtle hint of whale tail it adds appearance-wise is plenty cool.

[Source: Porsche]

Gallery: Porsche 911 Turbo Aerokit

Factory aero for your 911 Turbo originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 05 Dec 2007 14:34:00 EST. The supertuner/niche manufacturer has readied its latest creation for debut at the upcoming Essen Motor Show (think SEMA for European manufacturers). The TechArt Turbo Cabriolet follows the usual formula, offering incremental power upgrades culminating with a ridiculous 630 hp/604 lb-ft. This, while retaining the Turbo's AWD system and offering the added benefit of topless motoring. 911 GT2? What's that?

The added juice comes from new turbos, extensively upgraded intake and exhaust plumbing, and new engine management programming that ties it all together. TechArt also doctors the chassis, allowing the car to be lowered an additional 25mm via the factory PASM setup. Buyers can choose between two aero packages and the usual assortment of wheel/tire/interior upgrades, resulting in a bespoke convertible sports car with a top speed of 214 mph. Montgomery Scott not included.

PR pasted after the jump.

[Source: TechArt]

Gallery: TechArt Turbo Cabriolet

Continue reading More power, less roof: TechArt Turbo Cabriolet

More power, less roof: TechArt Turbo Cabriolet originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 19 Nov 2007 14:33:00 EST. I fiddle a bit with the seat and steering column adjustments until I'm comfortable, then double-check that my seatbelt is secured. It's hot and humid, but that's not why I'm perspiring - this cold sweat is a sign that my body's survival instincts are on edge, and for good reason. Fortunately, I've received personalized instruction from a quartet of legendary drivers and a complete technical briefing courtesy of Porsche Motorsports engineers, and there's little left to be learned without actually driving the car. I depress the heavily-weighted clutch pedal, muscle the short-throw shifter into 1st gear, bring the revs up, and...

A typical car-nut daydream? No - this was Autoblog's trip to the North American introduction of the third-generation Porsche 911 GT2. The folks from Zuffenhausen brought their latest no-holds-barred supercar to Daytona Beach, and allowed a select group of journalists to compare this latest effort to two other very capable 911 variants - the Turbo Coupe and GT3.

Gallery: 2008 Porsche GT2 intro

Porsche provided the vehicles for testing. We've heard rumors about a lightweight V-Spec GT-R for a while, and Nissan officials aren't even denying it. Carbon fiber and light-weight aluminum will take a vehicle that has posted a 911 Turbo-beating 7:38 lap at the 'Ring and kick it up a notch.

We'll start by saying that it's not exactly hearsay, but it's not anywhere near official, either. Take one 997 Porsche Turbo that has lapped the 'Ring in 7:40, practically fast enough to form one of those Stargate SG-1 vortexes behind it. Then take one Nissan GT-R, benchmarked against that Porsche Turbo, and flog that baby around the 'Ring as fast as possible. Add a few reporters on hand with stopwatches. And when the GT-R flies past the finish line, the reporters discover those stopwatches have come to rest after just 7:38.

So the story is that the GT-R is two seconds faster than the 911 Turbo on the Nurburgring. And the Skyline in the photos doesn't even look to be the mad-gunner EVO-spec version. If that's the case -- and yes, that's a big if -- and say you allow for the inaccuracy of handheld stopwatches and add two seconds, so the GT-R did the same time as the Porsche Turbo... Well, we're not crowning a victor, or speculating about the whats and whys, or what will happen when the real timed laps in production versions are done... we're just saying that's pretty good. That's all.

The good stuff all remains exactly as originally reported in the runup to the Geneva Motor Show. Tucked into the car's rump is a modified 3.6L twin-turbocharged flat six dishing out a reasonably healthy 630 horsepower and 604 lb-ft of torque. That's more equine propulsion than the mighty Carrera GT, and as you can see above, you can get it in green. We dig the matching stripes on the wheel rims, too. In fact, based on everything we've seen so far, there's really not a whole lot not to like about the GTstreet. 60 mph arrives in a scant 3.2 seconds, and when equipped with the full aero kit shown, the top speed is a manufacturer-claimed 214 mph. Very impressive, to say the least.

Updated photos have been added to the attached gallery.

[Source: TechArt]

Gallery: Techart GTstreet

TechArt releases new shots of the GTstreet originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 02 Jul 2007 13:28:00 EST. Not long ago Edo unveiled its 996 Turbo conversion kit. A couple of months later, and they've realized that that was so ... 996. Now it's time for their 997 Turbo package, called simply, "Shark." Horsepower goes from 480 to 550, and torque gets twisted up to 460 lb-ft to 583. Top speed is claimed to be around 210 mph. Outside, the package is rather understated, but of course we're talking about a car that looks half aftermarket when it leaves the factory. An altered front valance and front lip, a revised rear spoiler, and quad pipes are about it. If you don't include "edo competition" written on the sides, that is. We don't know how much the upgrade costs, but if you're spending what we're sure is "that kind of money," you could always get 20 more hp and 8 more lb-ft with Rinspeed's white Turbo number.
