One undoubtedly unhappy owner of a 2007 Saab 9-3 Combi in Sweden apparently found out first hand that leaving your iPod on your front seat is a bad idea, as investigators believe the musical bauble is the reason the wagon caught fire, turning its interior into a prop for Backdraft II.

There has been no definitive word that the iPod was the cause for the fire, and we don't know at this point whether the popular music player was charging at the time of the incident. We do know, though that there were apparently no underlying problems with the vehicle, and the fire started on the seats, where the iPod was resting.

Since iPods are still a very hot item (no pun intended), we're guessing that you shouldn't leave them sitting inside the car. Now that there is a chance the little battery-powered devices can spontaneously combust, we're not so sure they should be in your pocket, either. Hat tip to 13enS!

[Source: Hallandsposten via Engadget | Image: Christer Pioge]
Fiery Swede: Apple iPod suspected of torching defenseless Saab 9-3 Combi originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 09 Jul 2009 17:28:00 EST. In addition to more generous clearance afforded by the vertically enhanced suspension, the Volvo XC70-fighter will don plenty of cladding, whopping pipes out back, and it will utilize the services of a Haldex all-wheel-drive system to conquer inclement conditions.

Unless Saab decides to create an Aero edition that will use the 2.8-liter V6, the 210 horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter might be the only engine on offer in the U.S. initially. No price has been mentioned, either, but with the 9-3 SportCombi XWD running $38,585, that's probably a good place to start working your way up. We'll see the car at next month's Geneva Motor Show, and it is expected on sale later this year.

[Source: Motor Authority]
Spy Shots: Saab 9-3X spotted up close originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 05 Feb 2009 10:28:00 EST. The General has mentioned that Saab and HUMMER are up for strategic review, which Maximum Bob Lutz told Automotive News was "code for we realize they're not working and something needs to be done." Many are expecting GM to sell Saab, but unfortunately you need a seller and a buyer to strike an accord. And sources are telling AN that the General doesn't have the latter.

Tight credit markets could be part of the problem, and any would-be buyers that have ample cash on hand are likely to be hesitant to part with it. That's especially true when considering the fact that Saab's sales declined at nearly twice the US industry decline in 2008, with only 21,000 units sold. The Swedish government may make it a little easier to keep Saab after it offered up $3.1 billion in loans to aid its industry (including Volvo). GM likely needs as much short-term cash as possible right about now, but the fact remains that the Swedish brand hasn't brought much success in the past 20 years, and the near-term prospects don't look very good, either.

[Source: Automotive News - Sub.
Click above for a gallery of the Hirsch Performance kit for the Saab 9-3 Aero

Swiss tuner Hirsch has created a full body kit in carbon for the Saab 9-3 Aero sedan, convertible, and SportCombi. To do the best job of improving aerodynamics, reducing drag, and making the car look good, they enlisted the help of Saab's "master aerodynamicist" Håkan Danielsson and his team, as well as Taras Czornyj, who was the lead exterior designer on the 9-3 SportCombi.

What they came up with out front was a 3-piece upper mesh grille, a larger front spoiler with integrated splitters, and a lower mesh grille that increases airflow to the intercooler. Shaped side skirts lead the way to a rear diffuser and a larger rear spoiler on the sedan and convertible. For the SportCombi, Hirsch designed a hatch spoiler almost good enough for the WRC.

The hand-laminated carbon fiber parts are UV-coated, have been wind tunnel tested, and also tested and homologated for safety by the Royal Netherlands Motor Vehicle Authority. That means, according to Hirsch, that the parts are approved for fitment in all markets. The kit is only for the Aero trim level, and the price is listed as "on request," but based on the prices of the individual parts, don't expect much change if you hand over €1,500 -- and that's not including the wheels.

Gallery: Hirsch Performance Kit for Saab 9-3 Aero

[Source: Hirsch via turboNines]
New Hirsch aero upgrades for Saab 9-3 originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 28 Dec 2008 10:35:00 EST.
While details of the new car are vague, we do know that it is based on GM's Epsilon II platform (unlike the new 9-3, now rumored to be downsized) and that the styling is expected to follow cues from the Saab Aero-X. Back in November 2006, we called the current Saab 9-5 an octogenarian. In today's current automotive industry, the 9-5 has reached centenarian status. The replacement can't come soon enough.

Tougher emissions and fuel economy regulations in Europe and the United States have forced Saab to put the brakes on development of the next-generation 9-3. The current Saab 9-3 is built on GM's Epsilon platform (shared with the Opel Vectra, Chevrolet Malibu, and Pontiac G6). The next-gen model was set to be based on the longer and wider GM Epsilon II platform (used for the 2009 Saab 9-5). However, Saab and parent company General Motors are considering radically downsizing the model to fit GM's upcoming 'Global premium compact' platform - a size rivaling the Audi A3.

GM design sources told Autocar that a smaller chassis would dictate new technologies to maximize interior room. These would include a slim modular roof assembly and slimmer doors with advanced side-impact technology. General Motors has also hinted that the new 9-3 could be manufactured in the United States. Many European automakers are feeling the impact a weak dollar is having on profits and, like BMW, are moving or increasing production in the States.

The Swedish automaker has been in a marketing and design rut, which it intends to rectify by offering a new compact model that takes aim at the MINI and other small-sized competitors like the Volvo C30.

The new compact vehicle will be accompanied by a new small crossover and a redesigned 9-5, both of which will take styling cues from the Aero-X concept that has already infused the new 9-3. A new 9-5 will be based on the Theta and Epsilon 2 platforms, and is likely to debut in 2009. The CUV is expected near the close of the decade, while the 9-7X may meet its maker by the end of 2008.

[Source: Automotive News - Sub. According to Trollhattan Saab, which has been discussing and dissecting the Black Turbo/Turbo X speculation for a while, the car will make 280 horsepower and more importantly, feature eLSD as standard equipment. eLSD will be available on XWD Aero models, but only as an option. This limited slip differential adds the ability to split torque between the rear wheels in addition front/rear split that XWD affords drivers. Look for Turbo X styling to be more aggressive than what you'll see on the other restyled 9-3s, as well as an interior treatment exclusive to this model. Many people have called for an AWD performance Saab, and it's almost here. All will be made known in Frankfurt, and we'll be on hand to tell you about it soon after it goes down.

[Source: Saab]
Continue reading Frankfurt Preview: Saab to unveil "Black Turbo"-inspired Turbo X

Frankfurt Preview: Saab to unveil "Black Turbo"-inspired Turbo X originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 10 Aug 2007 08:29:00 EST. They mainly got to play with the flex-fuel 2.0L turbo four, which will probably be the base engine when the new Saab arrives on our shores. In Europe, the 9-3 will also be available with the 2.8L turbo V-6 and a twin turbo 1.8L diesel. Unfortunately, we probably won't get the diesel here.

The Brits were also impressed by the new XWD all-wheel-drive system that uses a combination of the latest Haldex center differential and an electronic limited slip differential in the rear axle to instantly distribute the drive torque away from slipping wheels to the ones that have grip in a smooth, seamless transition. Two days ago we showed you a brilliantly colored yellow cabrio trying to be anything but inconspicuous, and now the folks over at Trollhattan Saab captured several more photos of Saab's newest entry. We're happy with the new styling, particularly the new Cadillac-like head lights, and bright work around the grille and fog lights. The Aero-X-inspired grille and lower intake are much more aggressive than the current model, giving the '08 a much more contemporary, almost Mondeo-like look. We'd also like to note that we're glad to see that the uneven-looking tail lights of the current model didn't make their way to the '08.

Saab has been struggling to capture buyers attention for longer than we can remember, and recent offerings like the 9-7X didn't seem to do much for US buyers. With a terrific-looking front end and a re-done tail, we can see why Saab seems anxious to show off their face-lifted mid-sizer before the official unveiling. In part one, we talk Cerberus' purchase of the American icon turned German property Chrysler. In part two of podcast #66 we finished up the Chrysler talk, then we covered quite a bit of ground with the Malibu vs. Camry marketing campaign about to be waged by Chevrolet, Autoblog's spy shots of the Accord Sedan, and the upcoming Saab 9-3. In the last part of the podcast, we touch base on the Corvette Z07 or SS or Blue Devil or whatever, and we also break down the German dominance of the international engine awards. We crammed a whole lot into 30 minutes, and it's definately worth a listen. Remember, parts two and three of the podcast are available after the jump.

Check it out. Per your suggestions, we cut the podcast into three sections for smaller downloads, and we've also embedded sections two and three of the podcast after the jump. If you have any more suggestions on how to improve the enhanced version of the Podcast, let us know in the comments. We're working on a better distribution system than shoving all three in our current RSS feed of the audio-only version, so soon you'll be able to subscribe just to the enhanced version's RSS feed.

DOWNLOAD Part One to your desktop (Chrysler Sale)
DOWNLOAD Part Two to your desktop (Accord sedan, Saab 9-3, Chevy Malibu)
DOWNLOAD Part Three to your desktop (Corvette Z07, Engine Awards)

SUBSCRIBE to the Autoblog YouTube video channel

SUBSCRIBE to the Autoblog Podcast in iTunes
ADD the Autoblog Podcast feed to your RSS aggregator
Continue reading VIDEO: Autoblog Podcast #66 (enhanced)

VIDEO: Autoblog Podcast #66 (enhanced) originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 20 May 2007 09:41:00 EST. As much as it makes analysts and pundits foam at the mouth, news about the sale is a pretty dry affair. We'll be keeping an eye on how things go with the newly independent Chrysler, though.

On a more amusing note, we marvel at the confidence GM has in its new Malibu. The suggested sales tactic is to put the new Malibu beside a Camry in Chevy showrooms and guide the customer through how the Malibu is better. Of course, it's mainly a sales stunt - as the only way to tell anything about a car is by driving it. We wonder if Malibus will start popping up in Toyota stores - it'd improve the scenery compared to all the Joe Camel-looking cars, that's for sure. Perhaps the most momentous item we cover this week is Autoblog's first purchased spy shots, capturing the new Honda Accord in the wild. On the spy shot tip, our discussion moves on to the Saab 9-3 and we eventually end up talking about cellphone shots of the Blue Devil. Betwixt the Saab and hot 'Vette, we briefly ponder why German companies are filling their trophy cases with engine awards. German Engineering, ja. We finish up with a simple request - that Motor Trend, Automobile and their sibling buff books be well treated by their new stewards, which devolves into a confessional about who bought a back issue on eBay that featured one of their favorite cars. It's a 36 minute affair this week, enjoy!

SUBSCRIBE to the Autoblog Podcast in iTunes
LISTEN to the show now
ADD the Autoblog Podcast feed to your RSS aggregator
Autoblog Podcast #66 originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 15 May 2007 15:33:00 EST. In addition to the wagon that we've all already seen, we now get our first look at the sedan. The release after the jump (which comes via the automaker's Australian division) is very, very lean on details -- this is basically a teaser ahead of the full release that's coming next month, when we can expect to see the convertible and the rear ends of the sedan and wagon.

Obviously, the Aero-X-inspired styling is in play, with the cars getting new front ends, a clamshell hood, and new lighting. As for the other changes, the release plays coy, saying that "significant developments" in design, performance, and handling are being introduced with the car. In Australia, it'll bow with gasoline, diesel, and BioPower engines. We'll probably hear more from the US side later this morning, and will update this post accordingly. We wouldn't be surprised to hear that we'll get the BioPower E85 engine, but not any diesels.

The Australian press release is pasted after the jump.

UPDATE: When the car arrives in the US, it will be available in two trim levels: 2.0T and 2.8 V6 Aero. Sounds like the BioPower's not in the cards for this market (at least not at launch). The US press release has also been added after the jump.

[Source: Saab]

Gallery: 2008 Saab 9-3

Continue reading Officially Teased: 2008 Saab 9-3

Officially Teased: 2008 Saab 9-3 originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 14 May 2007 01:02:00 EST. The inside source who sent these in to Trollhattan Saab is familiar to Swade, who has dubbed him "Djup Strupe" (Deep Throat" in Swedish) based on the accuracy of information he has provided in the past.

The car will be formally unveiled June 10th in Sweden -- the 60th anniversary of the unveiling of the first Saab, and between this and what we've seen in the excellent spy photos circulating the last few weeks we have high hopes for the new 9-3. And those are just cosmetic changes. Throw in the new all-wheel-drive system and you have a vehicle that's going to be of significant interest compared to its predecessor. Derived from the Saab 9-3, the BLS tries hard to distinguish itself as a Cadillac, with restyled headlamps, fascia and grille. In the back the tailgate gets a thin crease down the center, while the taillights adopt a similar Caddy-centric design.

Sales are supposed to begin this fall, with the BLS coming equipped with either a 2.0L turbo four, a 2.8L V6 or a 1.9L diesel, all pulled straight from the Saab lineup. Pricing is expected to be around £21,500, with DVD sat-nav, Bose sound and other optional equipment sending the price skyward.

[Source: GM]

Gallery: Cadillac BLS Wagon

Continue reading Cadillac BLS wagon revealed!

Cadillac BLS wagon revealed! originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 12 Mar 2007 05:04:00 EST. The new grille inspired by the Aero X is present and we can see clearly now how the new curved hood meets up with it. The front and rear bumpers are both new, and the door handles for the new 9-3 will reportedly come straight off the Euro-market Cadillac BLS (they're not using them, so why not?), though this mule is still wearing the current car's handles. Let's face it, these are mild face lifts to the 9-3 line of cars, even if the new grilles do manage to spiff them up a bit. Where's an all-new 9-3, though? For that matter, a lot of Saab fanatics out there want there hatch back, jack.

[Source: World Car Fans]
Spy Shots: 2008 Saab 9-3 Convertible originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 22 Feb 2007 15:59:00 EST. Shown winter testing someplace where it's really cold and snowy, this 9-3 SportCombi test mule is sporting a new grille design that evokes the longish snout of the Aero X that was so well received at last year's Geneva Motor Show. Swade notes the new nose isn't a total transfer of the Aero X's look, probably because this refreshening will be a transition face for the 9-3 that bridges the current model and an all-new model that's still a few years out. Nevertheless, this grille is much taller than the current model's, and therefore the smallish intakes anchored to the headlights stretch farther down towards the center now to meet the main grille. Also noted is black tape at the top of each headlamp that could be covering a strip of LED daytime running lights.

[Source: Trollhattan.net]
Spy Shots: 2008 Saab 9-3 shaping up with Aero X cues originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 12 Feb 2007 14:58:00 EST. Outside, the cars receive a glitzy Ice Blue metallic finish and 17" rims. The theme inside the cabin is darker, with black leather seats and dark walnut trim setting the tone. Gray inlays and an embossed Saab logo add some more interest to the buckets, and matching-pattern floormats sit in the footwells.

In addition to that, the 9-3s get a high-zoot audio system, power seats, and foglamps. The 9-5s get the Visibility Package that features Parking Assistance and xenon headlights, among other things. Sedan, convertible, wagon -- all bodystyles for both the 9-3 and 9-5 are available in 60th Anniversary trim, so Saab's got you covered whether you need to haul the kids and family dog or if you're a sun-worshipper looking for a little wind in your hair.

On the 9-3 sedan, ragtop, and SportCombi the Anniversary package adds $1,825 to the price of the car. For the 9-5 sedan and SportCombi, the increase is smaller, coming in at $1,595. The press release after the jump goes into a little more detail, but as "paint & wheel" packages go, this one seems pretty nice. Happy shopping.

(Gallery, press release after the jump)

[Source: Saab]
Continue reading LA Auto Show: Saab 60th Anniversary Editions

LA Auto Show: Saab 60th Anniversary Editions originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 28 Nov 2006 12:00:00 EST. GMI member ChevroletRevived collaborated with fellow forum member fbodyrules, who supplied the Photoshop skills, to dream up a new line of Saabs on which the quirky Swedish brand should, in their opinion, adopt if it hopes to save itself from being sold or axed altogether.

The lineup includes a 9-1 small luxury vehicle along the lines of the Volvo C30 and Audi A3; a refreshened 9-3 with cues from the Aero X that allow the brand's volume seller to carry on another four years before an Epsilon II-based model is ready; a 9-4X small CUV that will compete with the Acura RDX, BMW X3 and Audi's upcoming Q5; a new 9-5 based on the Epsilon II platform (shown above); another version of the Lambda platform for the 9-7X replacement called the 9-6x; and finally a true luxury brand flagship in the new 9-9x sedan.

In true Saab form, the GMI guys have placed various turbo powerplants in all the models, ranging from the 1.8t in the 9-1 to the 480-hp, turbocharged 4.6-liter V8 in the 9-9x Aero. They also aim to keep Saab on the cutting edge by having GM offer its two-mode hybrid system in various models with the brand's BioPower motor that can run on gas or ethanol. Clearly a common design theme has been executed across this entire fictitious lineup that draws heavily from the Aero X concept, as well. Their designs are fetching, their product planning is thorough, and the end result is the most mainstream and attractive Saab lineup ever dreamed up. The question now is, will it remain a dream?

Follow the Read link to peruse the supposed future of Saab and let us know if you think these guys are on the right flight path or have totally veered off course.

[Source: GM Inside News]
Revitalization in Action posts dream Saab lineup originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 06 Nov 2006 14:56:00 EST.
