Touring Superleggera Disco Volante Concept live at Geneva

It's been 60 years since the 1952 Alfa Romeo C52 Disco Volante concepts lounged on the stages of the world's auto shows, and Touring Superleggera has taken to marking the occasion with a Disco Volante of its own, a striking coupe that has just debuted at this year's Geneva Motor Show.

The modern flying saucer pays homage to its ancestors with flat-top fenders and a split grille. Even so, it's hard to miss the vehicle's donor. Not surprisingly, the new Disco Volante is built on the bones of the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione, and relies on the same 4.7-liter V8 found in that machine. As such, buyers can look forward to 443 horsepower pumped exclusively to the rear wheels.

That's right. We said "buyers." This Disco Volante will be available in limited quantities (the company isn't saying how limited), though expect to pay a pretty penny for each one. General Lee Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione

Yup. Someone has apparently taken it upon themselves to slather the slinkiest of Alfa Romeo models with the bright orange paint and stars and bars of the General Lee from The Dukes of Hazzard. Why? Because if you have enough cash to park an 8C Competizione in your expansive garage, you can paint it in whatever livery you damn well please. Details are scarce, but our source says the coupe is real, and it rocks the appropriate "01" numbering on each door. We're hoping there's a horn capable of whistling Dixie under the hood as well, and we'll award bonus points if the doors are welded shut and there's a cage inside.

We'd love to know who ordered up this particular color combination. Our source, John S., says this photo was clicked near Balocco in Northern Italy (presumably adjacent to Alfa's test track facility there), but for now, we'll just content ourselves by wondering how you say "Daisy Duke" in Italian.

Over the course of his years donning the white suit and helmet for Top Gear, pro driver Ben Collins has had the chance to drive an enviably wide array of cars. Their track times all went up on the power lap board, but there are better ways of evaluating how a car handles under pressure - like asking the guy who drove them. That's what Australian car site Drive did, and got the former Stig to jot down some notes. They weren't in Morse Code, but while his list of the worst five cars he'd ever driven includes some obvious choices, a couple may surprise.

First up on Ben's hit list: the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione. When we drove it, we found its dynamics were lightyears behind its looks, and His (deposed) Stiginess apparently agrees. At the end of Collins' list is another supercar - the TVR Sagaris - which he feels was horribly emblematic of the company that produced it, while pointing to the fact that Jeremy Clarkson loved it as evidence enough of its dubious distinction.

In between these two European supercars on Collins' list comes the Fiat Multipla, whose horrid styling was surpassed only by its dismal performance, and the Cadillac Escalade, which the Englishman found to be all show and no go - particularly off road. Finally, the previous-generation Dodge Charger drew the Stig's ire for its gross weight and lamentable slushbox. If for America's sake alone, we can only hope that, heavier still though it is, Collins might take a crack at the new model.

We have an old saying: there's no such thing as too much Alfa Romeo news. With that in mind, why is the world's hottest Alfa sporting a "Got Milk?" mustache? Because the Photoshop warlocks at Britain's favorite automotive tabloid have no idea what the new 8C GTA is actually going to look like. Here's what we think we know. Alfa Romeo is going to release a carbon fiber intensive 8C Competizione variant called the GTA to celebrate the marque's centenary next year.

Thanks to all the exotic weave, the GTA will be over 300 pounds lighter than the "regular" Competizione, and with a new ECU and stouter internals, the 4.7-liter F430 derived V8 should produce more than 500 horsepower -- just in time to not upstage the 458 Italia's 562 hp. All that power will get neutralized by optional carbon-ceramic stoppers and naturally, expect the GTA's suspension to be much stiffer than the current car's GT tuning.

If it sounds like Alfa might be considering a return to the race track we can only give the thumbs up, smile and mutter under our breath, "about time." And it might help explain the white mouth. Price? Over $300,000. How many? Just 100 examples, total. We're expecting to catch an actual glimpse of the 8C GTA at the Geneva Motor Show this coming March.

It looks like the rest of the Alfa Romeo 8C Competiziones are starting to get into customer hands since that first one was delivered to James Glickenhaus. Last weekend at Motor4Toys we just missed a red one, but it happened to show up this morning at our weekly gathering in Irvine, California. The car drew a huge crowd, who universally praised it for its voluptuous good looks and gorgeous red paint job. The owner drove in and parked, revving it a bit to treat the onlookers. Although we've had the great pleasure of seeing the car in person a few times already, it is still stunning. And it was fun to watch the others seeing it for the first time. This is truly mobile art. Drew and Jonathon happened to be at the show this morning as well and are trying to convince the owner to let them take it for a spin. Hopefully they get their wish, but until then, check out the gallery to see some of my pics along with Drew's typical photographic magic.

We've all known it's coming, and we half expected to see it on the show stand in Frankfurt, but at least now we've got confirmation. Alfa Romeo will be putting a convertible version of the oh-so-delectable 8C Competizione on sale in 2009. The standard fixed-roof car went on sale this month in Europe with a price tag of €165,000, and the cabrio version will command a €20,000 premium on top of that. The concept above was originally shown in Pebble Beach in 2005.

Alfa is limiting production of the coupe to 500 units, and it's expected that the Spider will have a similar run.

When Alfa Romeo showed off the magnificent 8C Competizione coupe earlier this week, the gathered media got to look at it, photograph it, touch it and drool at the site of it. What we didn't get to do was drive it. Alfa did, however, provide some video footage of the 8C on the road attacking the sort of twisty mountain roads that would make a daily commute actually enjoyable. After being absent from the US market since 1995, Alfa Romeo is finally coming back to America one year from now and they are returning with a bang! The opening salvo from Alfa will be the 8C Competizione, which has been appearing in Europe for several years now. Alfa is only building a grand total of 500 8Cs for the entire world with less than 100 of those coming here, and they will be the last of the series.

As part of the preview for this weekend's Meadow Brook Concours d'Elegance, Maserati North America boss Jim Selwa unveiled the 8C for the first time in North America in final production form. Befitting such a low volume car, it will command a commensurately high volume price. In Selwa's words, it will be "somewhere north of $200,000." The carbon fiber bodied Alfa has a 4.7L V-8 with 450 hp passing through a six-speed paddle-shifted transaxle. Needless to say, there is no wrong wheel drive silliness here.

Under the glass rear hatch resides some custom fitted leather luggage, including a special briefcase in it's own slot at the back. The 8C will be offered through a limited number of Maserati dealers with the highest rated outlets getting priority. After the 8Cs are all gone, the Alfa renaissance will continue with more mainstream models coming over in 2009. According to Maserati NA PR manager Jeff Ehoodin, the models that will be available will be announced at a later date. For those with a taste for Italian style, the 8C is a wonderful way to start.

The world was wowed in September when Alfa Romeo officially unveiled their 8C Competizione in Paris. These new hi-res photos now have us asking: Is this a gorgeous car? Or is it the most gorgeous car?

Why wait until you pull together your first million - starting this fall you can drive Alfa Romeo's forthcoming coupe regardless of your credit rating - in Atari's Test Drive Unlimited online racing game.

Atari has announced that Alfa's 8c Competizione (shown above, in the game's virtual Hawaii) has been added to the game's portfolio of more than 125 licensed vehicles from manufacturers including Lamborghini, Aston Martin, Pagani, Saleen, Jaguar, Mercedes and Ducati (yes, the game includes bikes).

Currently in beta prior to its release this fall, Test Drive Unlimited is the gearhead's version of the MMPORG (Massively Multi-Player Online Role-Playing Game) - a new genre which Atari calls MOOR, for Massively Open Online Racing. Thousands of gamers will be able to play simultaneously, driving hundreds of realistically-rendered cars and bikes on more than 1,000 miles of Hawaiian roads on the island of Oahu. TDU players win races, challenges, missions and tournaments to earn credits that they can use to purchase new cars (from in-game dealerships!), bikes, performance parts, new apparel for their avatar, homes and, of course, garages.

Cars are fully functional to the manufacturer's specs, and include such niceties as working wipers, radio, horn and electric windows. Hop-ups are drawn from either the actual manufacturer's catalog, or from the in-game "aftermarket."

Apparently Alfa Romeo plans to make a splash in the upscale end of the U.S. market before introducing its mainstream models to the U.S. As Alfa Romeo's plans to return to the U.S. become more defined, AutoWeek reported Monday that the delectable 8c Competizione coupe will debut in U.S. Maserati dealerships in late 2008, followed by the 8c Spider in 2009.

The limited edition 8c will be based on a shortened Maserati Coupe platform and be powered by the Maserati 4.2-liter V8, which should simplify service and support by the Maserati dealer network.

The U.S. will get fully half of the 8c production run, currently planned for 500 coupes and 500 spider models.

Alfa's 159, Brera and Spider models will slipstream into the U.S. market behind the 8c halo model, with launches tentatively scheduled for the 2010-2011 timeframe.

The well-regarded Italian magazine Quattroruote published a good news/bad news story Tuesday. In a story about the difficulty Alfa Romeo will face in (re)establishing itself in the competitive American market, the magazine confirms the brand will be seen in the U.S., but adds the caveat "even if not before 2010." Earlier statements (see our post here) had suggested a return as soon as late 2007.

No sources are cited, so it's difficult to chase this story further - we'll just have to wait for official word from Fiat or Alfa Romeo.

One part of the article with which we wholeheartedly agree - Quattroruote encourages Alfa to bring the gorgeous 8C Competizione (shown above) to the U.S. as the brand's halo car, saying (in Google translation-speak) its "Italian style" will offer "an alternative to the excesses of BMW's Bangle and to the anonymity of the Japanese models." Hear, hear!

After an absence of more than a decade, Fiat's Alfa Romeo brand is returning to the U.S. market. In a conference call May 3rd, Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne confirmed that he has plans in place to begin distributing Alfa Romeo models in the U.S. through  Maserati's dealer network, possibly as soon as late 2007.

Italiaspeed reports that the U.S. launch models will likely be the upper end of the range - Alfa 159, Brera (shown above) and Spider. And yes, this means that the 8c Competizione is also coming to the U.S.

Italiaspeed reported Wednesday that Alfa Romeo's 8C Competizione concept is being readied for production. The concept car (shown above) debuted in Frankfurt in 2003, and rumors of its possible production have run rampant ever since, and the latest tantalizing hint of 8C activity at Alfa Romeo is this new video. (Autoblog readers will recall that Alfa Romeo prepared a similar pre-launch video for the Alfa Brera.)

Italiaspeed reports that the production version of the 8C Competizione will debut at the Paris Motor Show later this year, and production will begin in 2007. The production 8C is said to be powered by Maserati's new 4.7-liter engine, rather than the supercharged 4.2-liter unit in the concept car. The new engine is expected to produce between 460 and 500 hp, good for 0-62 mph in about 4.5 seconds.

The new Alfa will be positioned opposite Ferrari's F430 coupe, avoiding competition with  Maserati's less-expensive models.
