Perhaps it's merely the era, perhaps it's the shapes of modern cars, but you just don't see large numbers of sports cars and supercars drenched in wildly luminous colors anymore - the Lamborghini Gallardo maybe the only exception. A sky blue Porsche 911 or a dandelion Ferrari were once nothing special; now a white Ferrari is avant-garde.

Not so for the driver of this BMW 6 Series convertible, who doubled down on a special-order Atacama Yellow paint job - not vinyl wrap - from the factory for his 6. Bimmerpost forum member X-Vert caught this in NYC while it was waiting to have some work done. While we personally <strike>shy</strike> run away from cars in incadescent colors, and even though the girth of the 6 Series makes for a Great Wall of Yellow, with the black top and black wheels we think it's not bad at all. It's not for us, but it's not bad.

Yet the image deceives: it has been 'Shopped to disguise the fact that the wheels aren't really black. They're yellow. And that changes everything... To see the beast fully resplendent, head on over to Bimmerpost.
Does BMW's new 6 Series Convertible work in yellow? originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 23 May 2012 15:31:00 EST. BMW Takes On Mercedes And Audi In The Profit Margin Wars

As the years go by, it's become the Germans who are most closely watching what each other are doing over the backyard fence. So much so, at times, that it can almost seem like they're freely swapping all their trade secrets unapologetically in full view.

Take this nicely executed new luxo-niche player, the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe. It's no scoop, of course, that it was created specifically to not miss out on what both Mercedes-Benz and Audi are discovering for themselves with the CLS and A7. And yes, that "nicely executed" modifier just used to describe the Gran Coupe could indeed ring with more enthusiasm.

The 640i Gran Coupe we sailed around in all over Sicily under a crisp sun is a generally good-looking machine. BMW designers have taken the existing Big Bimmer language and successfully created a new dialect for the company, if you will. But these "four-door coupe" creations are curiosities for which many develop a love (or, occasionally, a distaste) for over the long run. Only the first-generation CLS in 2003-04 absolutely socked it to us at first glance, and since then, everything else in the genre has felt derivative. Well, they essentially are blatant derivatives, right?

Continue reading 2013 BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe

2013 BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 08 May 2012 11:57:00 EST.
Drivers of 2010-2011 Rolls Royce Ghost models and several BMW models with turbocharged engines need to get their vehicles to their dealers. The cars are being recalled for a potentially hazardous defect that could turn their high-end autos into smoldering hunks of less luxurious melted plastic and steel.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says the circuit boards on the cars' water pump could overheat and possibly catch fire.

The 2011 BMW models affected are the 5 Series and 5 Series Gran Turismo. 2012 models are the 6 Series, 7 Series, X5 and X6. All affected models have either the turbocharged V8 or V12. NHTSA says the number of BMWs affected is 2,846. About 60 Rolls Royce Ghosts will be recalled.

The recall is nearly identical to one announced last November that recalled 2010 Rolls Royce Ghosts. This campaign seems to address the same problem that plagued 2011 models.
Continue reading BMW, Rolls-Royce issue recall over smoldering circuit boards

BMW, Rolls-Royce issue recall over smoldering circuit boards originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 17 Apr 2012 09:00:00 EST.
If you've been saving your spare change to pick up one of these new BMW models later this year, well, now you can more accurately estimate how many wheelbarrows full of nickels you'll need to dump into the Coinstar machine at your local grocery store.

We'll start with the 2013 6 Series Gran Coupe. While we already knew the six-cylinder 640i Gran Coupe would start at $76,895 including destination charges, prices on the V8 models have now been set. The 650i will sell for $87,395, while the 650i xDrive model will command $90,395. Both are powered by a twin-turbo, 445-horsepower, 4.4-liter V8, which BMW says can propel the all-wheel-drive version from 0-62 miles per hour in 4.5 seconds. (The rear-wheel-drive model is a tick slower at 4.6 seconds.) The 640i goes on sale in late June, with the V8 models coming towards the end of summer.

The M series cars will command substantially more, with the 2012 M6 Convertible commanding all of $113,995 when it goes on sale in June. The M6 Coupe and M5 will go on sale in late summer as 2013 models, with the M6 carrying a $106,995 MSRP and the M5 listing at $90,695. All three models will share a twin-turbo, 560-horsepower, 4.4-liter V8.

The price of a fourth M vehicle, the revised 2013 BMW X6 M, has also been announced. It will sell for $93,795, a $2,600 increase from this year's model.
BMW has finally pulled the sheets back on its 2012 M6 Convertible. The convertible counterpart to the hardtop that debuted at the Geneva Motor Show bows with the same vicious turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 under the hood. Good for 560 horsepower and 500 pound-feet of torque and mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, the convertible should be able to launch to 62 mph in around 4.1 seconds. BMW hasn't mentioned the weight difference between the hardtop and the convertible, though the automaker stressed the 2013 model has shed significant weight over its predecessor. The "base" 2013 BMW M6 Convertible will leave the showroom with 19-inch M-designed wheels, though larger 20-inch alloys are also available.

The vehicle will land on U.S. shores this summer ahead of its hardtop brethren. The big question is whether or not BMW will offer the convertible with an honest manual gearbox. So far, BMW hasn't said much in that direction beyond saying the possibility is "under consideration." Given the M6 Convertible target demographic, we'd say that we doubt it, but you never know - BMW has had a noteworthy habit of building America-only manual transmissions models as of late. Hit the jump for the full press release.
Continue reading 2012 BMW M6 Convertible makes its world debut

2012 BMW M6 Convertible makes its world debut originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 04 Apr 2012 10:31:00 EST.
BMW has announced it is recalling a whopping 1.3 million 5 Series and 6 Series vehicles from the 2003 to 2010 model years. Of those, Reuters notes that some 368,000 examples were sold in the U.S. - most of them sedans like the one above.

It doesn't sound like too difficult of a problem to fix, but the automaker says the cars' battery cable covers could be incorrectly mounted. BMW says no accidents or injuries have occurred because of the issue, but there is the potential that affected models may fail to start, or worse, catch fire.

Owners will be receiving a letter soon and will be asked to visit a BMW dealer for about a 30-minute repair session.

A company spokesman tells The Wall Street Journal that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has been notified. Just 9 months ago, BMW was penalized $3 million for failing to report safety defects to NHTSA quickly enough. It looks like they may have learned their lesson.
The 2013 BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe may have debuted a full three months ago (time flies, huh?), but we're just now seeing it in person for the first time here at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show. The prolonged debut almost makes sense for BMW's big coupe, since it's a late entry in a segment that already includes stunners like the Mercedes-Benz CLS, Audi A7, Porsche Panamera and even the Aston Martin Rapide (if you're really reaching).

But that doesn't make the 6 Series Gran Coupe any less interesting - or stunning. We still don't 100 percent love the 6er's new front fascia, but there's no question that the sloping roofline and squat hind quarters are anything less than sleek and shapely. Oh, and get a load of that interior. The two-tone leather surfaces and two-passenger rear compartment look absolutely stunning.

BMW will launch the 640i Gran Coupe in the United States first, powered by the automaker's widely popular N55 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six, good for 315 horsepower and 330 pound-feet of torque and mated to an eight-speed automatic gearbox. The eight-cylinder 650i and xDrive models will follow suit in short order, as well.

Cost of entry: $76,895 for the 640i. Get your wallets ready, and see a full brace of live images direct from Geneva in our attached high-res gallery.
Continue reading 2013 BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe finally shows up

2013 BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe finally shows up originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 07 Mar 2012 04:58:00 EST.
BMW and its commitment to maximizing the potential of every model continues with the 2012 640d xDrive. It's the first time the 6 Series has used a diesel engine, and it sound like it won't disappoint if 'sporty' and 'oil-burning' are your prerogatives: the 3.0-liter inline six with TwinPower turbos throws off 313 horsepower and 465 pound-feet, with all that twist available from around 2,000 rpm. Working through the standard eight-speed automatic will get you from 0 to 60 in five seconds, and the coupe will return an estimated 40 U.S. mpg.

This is also the first 6er to be fitted with Intelligent xDrive, which routes 60 percent of the power to the rear and 40 percent to the front in normal conditions. However, it can shuttle power from front to back and side to side depending on traction and the sporting intensity of your cornering. It will be available in convertible form as well, though we don't expect either to show up in U.S. showrooms any time soon.

What's the new M6 made of? Just like the last generation, it takes all the best bits from the M5 and distills them into two door form. And this time, the convertible comes first.

At its heart, the M6 Coupe and Cabriolet are all about the engine, and as expected both models use the same twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 (ironically codenamed S63) to output 560 horsepower and 500 pound-feet of torque, the latter of which peaks between 1,500 and 5,750 rpm. Those figures should sound familiar, as they're almost exact duplicates of the M5's specs (the sedan makes an additional two lb-ft of torque), including the 7,200 rpm rev limiter and Valvetronic system.

Mated to the same seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox as the M5, BMW claims the M6 Coupe will run from a rest to 62 mph in 4.2 seconds, with the cabrio taking an additional tenth of a second to hit the same mark. According to our sources, a six-speed manual option is under consideration, but it won't be available at launch. And again, just like the M5, fuel consumption has been reduced by 30 percent while power has increased by around 10 percent.

Also included is BMW's Active M Differential, an electronically controlled multi-plate limited slip diff that works in conjunction with the DSC and the new Dynamic Damper Controls that electro-hydraulically tweak damping force on-the-fly depending on the settings and the situation.

Inside the subtly blistered wheel arches are massive 16.1-inch carbon ceramic rotors in front, gripped by six piston blue calipers, with equally impressive 15.6-inch rotors out back held by a single-piston caliper. The standard wheels are M-specific 19-inch alloys with 265/40 R19 ultra-high performance summer tires in front and 295/35 R19 rubber in the rear, with 20-inch lightweight hoops available as an option.

BMW isn't citing exact curb weights for either the coupe or cabrio yet, but assures us that they're notably less than the previous E63/E64, and the double-bubble carbon fiber roof on the coupe is a visual testament to that.

Sales of the convertible will start this June, with the coupe arriving later this summer as a 2013 model. And we hear we'll get to see the drop top in person at the New York Auto Show, with the coupe debuting in Geneva. Hit the jump for all the tech-laden details.
Continue reading BMW debuts 560-hp twin-turbo M6, manual option under consideration

BMW debuts 560-hp twin-turbo M6, manual option under consideration originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 11 Feb 2012 18:00:00 EST.
BMW has slapped a sticker onto the latest addition to the 6 Series lineup, and the all-new 2013 640i Gran Coupe will carry at sticker of $76,895 (including the $895 destination charge) when it goes on sale this summer.

The 640i is the first variant of the segment-splitting "4+1" sedan, which gets power from the ubiquitous TwinPower turbocharged and direct-injected 3.0-liter inline-six putting out 315 horsepower and 330 pound-feet of torque. A 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8-powered 650i Gran Coupe will be on offer later this year in both rear-wheel and all-wheel-drive guise, although BMW is holding off on pricing those two 445 hp models until closer to launch. Full details in the press blast after the break.
Continue reading 2013 BMW 640i Gran Coupe priced at $76,895

2013 BMW 640i Gran Coupe priced at $76,895 originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 09 Feb 2012 18:01:00 EST. We got our first taste of the 2013 6 Series Gran Coupe this weekend, but BMW has since released over 100 new photos of the car, plus some video.
Better late than never, right?

We're now on the second generation of the Mercedes-Benz CLS, the luxury sedan that kicked off the whole "four-door coupe" craze. Since then, Volkswagen countered with the CC, Porsche launched the Panamera, and Audi won us over with its A7. So what about BMW? Now that the big 6 Series coupe has taken hold, the German automaker has added a proper back seat and two additional doors to create this, the 2013 6 Series Gran Coupe.

The first version of the Gran Coupe to arrive Stateside will be the 640i, powered by BMW's N55 3.0-liter turbocharged inline six, good for 315 horsepower and 330 pound-feet of torque in this application. Shortly thereafter, the 650i Gran Coupe will arrive, available with rear-wheel drive or xDrive all-wheel drive, boasting a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 tuned to 445 hp and 480 lb-ft. Both engines are paired with BMW's ZF-sourced eight-speed automatic transmission.

Compared to its two-door counterpart, the Gran Coupe is a full 4.4 inches longer, and most of that added length benefits the rear passengers. BMW's literature states that the stretched 6 Series has a 4+1 seating configuration, meaning there's actually a quasi-usable seat between the two outboard rear positions. (Good luck.) Judging from the photos, the Gran Coupe's interior is as luxuriously appointed and tech-laden as the rest of the 6 Series range - if not a little bit moreso.

We originally thought that BMW would debut the 2013 6 Series Gran Coupe at next month's Detroit Auto Show, but since the all-new 2012 3 Series is expected to make its public debut at Cobo Hall, we think BMW may hold off on the official Gran Coupe introduction until the Geneva Motor Show in March. We'll likely know official pricing details around that time, too. For now, soak it up in our high-res gallery and follow the jump to read the full details in BMW's press blast.

There aren't a lot of all-wheel-drive convertibles on the market - but most of them come from German automakers. In fact nearly all of them come from the Volkswagen Group portfolio: the Audi A5, TT and R8, the Porsche 911, Bentley Continental GTC, Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder and Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport. But BMW is not about to let its arch rival keep that entire market - however small and specific it might be - all to itself. And to that end, it has just made the 2012 6 Series available with its xDrive all-wheel traction system, as evidenced by its appearance as an option on BMW USA's website.

Of course, this was an expected move. While it was at it, BMW has also made the system available on the fixed-roof 6 Series coupe as well. xDrive is a new feature for the 650i, joining a larger segment that includes a wider variety of challengers including the Cadillac CTS, Infiniti G37 and BMW's own 3 Series, which offers xDrive as an option on sedan, wagon and coupe models, albeit not on convertibles.
BMW adds all-wheel drive to 6 Series range originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 19 Sep 2011 10:29:00 EST.
Hamann has a knack for taking already impressive-performing vehicles and turning up the heat a few degrees. The styling choices along the way are hit or miss, but the vehicles always turn heads. One of the tuning company's latest vehicles is the Hamann 6 Series Cabriolet, which is quite clearly a BMW 6 Series with a host of upgrades.

The most notable change Hamann has made lies under the hood. Power output is up to 510 horses and the Hamann quad-tip stainless exhaust will make sure you hear every single one of them. Hamann also added an aggressive body kit to go with the angered-up engine note, and bolted on a set of 21-inch matte black forged alloy wheels. Lowering the 6 Series by 30 millimeters also adds to the sporty air of this droptop.
Continue reading Hamann shows us the dark side of the BMW 6 Series convertible

Hamann shows us the dark side of the BMW 6 Series convertible originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 15 Sep 2011 13:39:00 EST.
Nice as it may be, the BMW 6 Series convertible doesn't really make our heart beat any faster. It's a soft, plush open-top tourer, and though the 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 underhood certainly doesn't skimp on the power, it doesn't really make for an enthusiastic driving experience.

Enter Alpina, the BMW tuning house that has given us the 7 Series-based B7 here in the United States, not to mention creations like the B5 abroad. Like the rest of its work, the appropriately named B6 Biturbo Cabriolet adds more power to the 650i engine - 507 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque, compared to 400 hp and 450 lb-ft in the standard car. What's more, the suspension geometry gets tweaked slightly, and the car features new styling touches like a more aggressive front fascia, Alpina's iconic blue paint, and - of course - the tuner's signature 20-spoke wheels.

Nice, yes, but we think we'll stick to the B5 wagon that bowed in Geneva back in March. Still, see the B6 for yourself in our attached high-res image gallery.
Alpina unveils 507-hp B6 Biturbo Convertible originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 14 Sep 2011 03:58:00 EST.
It looks like BMW is out to broaden the 6 Series range. A spy videographer managed to lay lenses on a very camouflaged version of the big 6 with two extra doors. Specifics on the 6 Series GranCoupe are sparse at the moment, though odds are that the suits at BMW are taking aim at the Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class with the new model. Does BMW need yet another sedan in its mix? More importantly, does the world need another coupe-like four door? All we can say is that the world doesn't need bourbon, either, but it sure makes the place a little more interesting.

The same can be said for vehicles with limited niche appeal. At this point, your guess is as good as ours when it comes to the vehicle's launch date, but given that engineers are already logging miles on public streets, we wouldn't put the 6 Series GranCoupe more than two years from production. Hit the jump to check out the full video for yourself.
Continue reading BMW 6 Series GranCoupe captured in motion

BMW 6 Series GranCoupe captured in motion originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 05 Sep 2011 17:01:00 EST. In 1988, Citation Motors, a BMW Dealership in Ontario, shut its doors with little explanation. The simple answer seems to be that the dealership had its concession license revoked, but nobody seems to be able to track down why exactly. Endras BMW, another Toronto-based Bimmer peddler, did some digging, but didn't come up with too much.

Whatever the case, the dealership moved to Toronto, switched its name to Downtown BMW, and went under in 2002. The owner of both places seems to be eccentric at best, as he left Citation where it sat, untouched, with a then-brand new 635csi and E28 5 Series abandoned inside. The business is reportedly well cared for, and the cars have not succumbed to the elements the way they would have were they truly left to rot.

The owner of the establishment apparently has little interest in selling the business or his wares. To make things more interesting, there's apparently an as-yet unopened underground storage facility and a back lot packed with junked Bimmers.
Why was this BMW dealership abandoned in 1988 with cars still inside? originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 14 Aug 2011 15:54:00 EST.
We're in the middle of yet another slow striptease of prototypes from BMW, this time starring the 2013 6 Series Gran Coupe. We've seen patent filings and two sets of spy shots, not to mention the original 'concept' that - unsurprisingly - looks very, very similar to the almost-ready development cars caught out on the road.

For round three, we're getting our first glimpse at the four-door 6 Series' M Sport package, complete with the usual performance-ish upgrades like larger wheels, a more aggressive front fascia and revised exhaust. Truth be told, we like the M Sport additions to the awkward 6 Series nose, and we're sure the finished product will be quite a looker (especially in black). Scroll through our attached image gallery to see the sporty Sixer for yourself.
2013 BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe snapped wearing M package originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 08 Aug 2011 14:59:00 EST.
The 2012 BMW 6 Series coupe will hit dealerships on October 1st, and it can be yours for a cool $83,000. That is, before you tick any of the boxes for options. BMW just launched the online configurator for the 650i coupe, and with every option selected, you'll go just a hair over $100,000.

While the 650i coupe goes on sale first, BMW will also offer the turbocharged, six-cylinder 640i in the U.S. at a later date. For now, though, only the V8 can be built online, so head to BMW's website and start playing around.
2012 BMW 6 Series Coupe configurator now playing originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 16 Jul 2011 15:33:00 EST.
