Google executive Benjamin Sloss recently took delivery of a very special Ferrari in a unique way. Sloss was the winning bidder in an charity auction of an ultra-rare Ferrari 599XX Evo hypercar. The proceeds of this auction went to benefit the victims of an earthquake that struck the Emiglia Romaga region of Italy in May of this year. The region is home to Modena, Maranello and Fiorano - all towns and cities that are significant to the Italian automaker. The winning bid of €1.4 million ($1.78 million) will go to victims in these cities, among others, in the region.

Sloss, who accepted the car in an event at the Italian Grand Prix at Monza, had the car painted bright yellow. The high-performance machine was presented by Ferrari boss Luca di Montezemolo, accompanied by Scuderia Ferrari drivers Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa.

The 599XX Evo won by the Google exec is a special machine, powered by a 740-horsepower V12, and equipped with active aerodynamics. It lapped the Nürburgring in a mere 6:58.16.

Sloss was quoted as saying that he was extremely happy to have contributed to the cause. The 599XX Evo was part of a series of auctions to raise money for victims. Other items included front bodywork and a V8 engine from a retired Formula One racecar. Also auctioned was a racing suit worn by former F1 driver Giancarlo Fisichella. All told, the auction raised close to $2.3 million.
Ferrari 599XX Evo auctioned to Google exec for charity originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 11 Sep 2012 18:41:00 EST.
Soon Ferrari will disocntinue the 599 as it ushers the new F12 Berlinetta into production, but until then the GTO holds its place as king of the hill. So before the ultimate incarnation of the 599 is swept off into retirement, Romeo Ferraris has developed a series of enhancements to the Ferrari flagship.

Given that Maranello has put just about everything it has into the 599 GTO, there wasn't a lot of room to play around. So the tuner has released two small upgrades. Stage 1 encompasses a new air filter and exhaust for a 15-horsepower boost, while the Stage 2 kit remaps the ECU as well for 40-horsepower upgrade to bring overall output up to 710 hp - putting the final iteration of the 599 within spitting distance of its replacement's 740 hp.

A series of extra carbon fiber components are also offered, but Romeo Ferraris apparently holds enough reverence for the donor cars to keep the modifications to a minimum.
Romeo Ferraris tweaks the Ferrari 599 GTO originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 01 Apr 2012 10:02:00 EST. As usual, the Internet can't wait.

An image of the F620 GT was published today on GTSpirit.com, who claims it was sent to them by a reader. The timing was fortuitous, as we also have an image of the F620 GT, supplied to us by sources who have seen the car in person. While not an official rendering of the F620 GT from Ferrari, it's the best look yet at what will be unveiled on February 29.

Our friends at eGarage.com were also nice enough to provide some specs, which come directly from Ferrari. The F620 GT's 6.3-liter V12 will produce 740 horsepower and 690 pound-feet of torque, making it the most powerful twelve-cylinder engine ever made by Ferrari. With a redline of 8,700 rpm, this powerplant will move the Italian grand tourer to 60 miles per hour in 3.1 seconds and 100 mph in 8.3 seconds. It's also lighter, lower and shorter than the 599 it's replacing.

With five days still left to go before Ferrari officially debuts the F620 GT, expect the Internet to continue digging.
THIS is the new 2013 Ferrari F620 GT, plus specs originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 24 Feb 2012 12:30:00 EST.
It's not every day that Ferrari unveils a new model. And most of the time, when it does, it's a variant of an existing one. But when the doors open at the Geneva Motor Show next month, word has it that the House that Enzo Built will be showcasing an all-new front-engined V12 GT to replace the long-serving 599.

Dubbed F620, the all-new supercar is expected to pack a 6.2-liter version of the direct-injection V12 from the FF into an aluminum chassis. Expect the usual smattering of carbon fiber bits, but don't expect to see the costly material being used for structural components: Ferrari has discounted the application due to its high cost to manufacture and repair. Also off the table for this model is the part-time all-wheel-drive system from the FF, as the F620's anticipated 700 horsepower will drive the rear wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox.

However accurate the forecasted specifications turn out to be, we'll find out one way or another next month.
Ferrari to unveil new F620 in Geneva originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 08 Feb 2012 13:28:00 EST.
Ferrari has been wining races in Formula 1 for 60 years now, and to celebrate, the company has unleashed a new special-edition version of the 599. The Ferrari 599 GTB 60F1 is available to buyers through the company's Tailor Made program, and includes the performance suspension components of the HGTE package. Those include stiffer springs with dampers to match, a larger rear stabilizer bar, more aggressive tires and a lower ride height. Befitting a low-volume model, the 599 GTB 60F1 will only be available in three liveries, each representing a specific win in the automaker's history.

The 375 F1 livery pays tribute to Froilan Gonzalez's first victory for Ferrari at the 1951 British Grand Prix, while the Ferrari 150 Italia scheme is a tip of the hat to Fernando Alanso's win at Silverstone, the same track that Gonzalez conquered for the automaker's first gold. Alonso took the honor of the company's 60th time at the top of the podium. Ferrari also plans to sell the 599 GTBM 60F1 in a third variant that plays off of the 150 Italia livery.
Ferrari debuts limited edition 599 GTB 60F1 originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 06 Dec 2011 16:00:00 EST.
An outfit like Ferrari keeps a tight product portfolio. Four model lines in all, when it comes down to production models. Even with the various derivatives that follow, that still doesn't amount to a large number of new debuts from year to year. But as a racing team first and an automaker second, it rolls out a new vehicle at least once a year. What falls between, then, bridges the gap.

What comes in between a road car and an F1 car, you ask? With a rapidly escalation level of crossover in technologies, less and less. But the narrow territory we're talking about is the XX development program - what Ferrari terms as their elite cadre of "client development drivers." That is, the customers who are willing to shell out big bucks - and we do mean big bucks - to test out the latest technological developments on the path from F1 cars to road cars.

The program initially launched with the FXX, an Enzo-based track car that was neither homologated for any racing series nor certified for road use (save a handful of well-heeled customers in some small countries where cash can overcome regulation). That was later improved upon with the FXX Evoluzione, an upgrade offered to existing owners/participants in the program. That, in turn, was succeeded by the 599XX, which has now led, somewhat expectedly, to the 599XX Evoluzione.

For another €185,000 (about $250k) over the €1.3 million ($1.75m) purchase price of the initial 599XX - existing buyers-in to the program can opt to upgrade to the Evoluzione model. That includes a two-year extension of factory-backed "test sessions", as well as a number of upgrades that center primarily around the aerodynamics package. Aside from the giant front splitter that juts out from the nose, you might notice a rear wing that would make a jumbo-jet blush. But it's not just a big spoiler: it's an adaptive one, too. Like the DRS mechanism employed in Formula One, the FXX Evo's rear wing can be opened up for reduced drag on straightaways or closed for increased downforce in the corners.

Coupled with an incidental 30-horsepower increase in output from the 6.0-liter V12 (for 740hp total), the 599XX Evoluzione can now lap Ferrari's private Fiorano test track in 1:15 - a full second faster than the existing 599XX... or nine seconds ahead of the 599 GTO, the fasted street-legal version of the same road-going GT. But with only 29 examples in existence - the first of which was just unveiled for the first time at the Bologna Motor Show - we'll just have to wait for the adaptive aero bits to trickle down to the rest of us. Details in the press release after the jump.
Continue reading Ferrari unveils upgraded 599XX Evoluzione in Bologna

Ferrari unveils upgraded 599XX Evoluzione in Bologna originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 02 Dec 2011 09:58:00 EST.
Now that Ferrari has launched the FF as the official replacement of the 612 Scaglietti, it's time for the Italian automaker to wrap up development of the successor to the 599. While we previously spotted this car's replacement undergoing development in a California shell, what you see here are the first photos that actually give a glimpse of the new car's shape, camouflaged as it may be.

The 599 successor - rumored to be dubbed F620 - will likely be powered by Ferrari's 6.3-liter V12, churning out over 700 horsepower. Unlike the all-wheel-drive FF, the 599 replacement will continue to use rear-wheel drive, sending its power to the back wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission with an F1-style electronic differential.

Our sources suggest that the F620 will be much lighter than the outgoing 599, due in part to a larger usage of aluminum in the body construction. As for design, it's safe to assume that the coupe will take a large influence from the 458 Italia, with some cues from the FF thrown in for good measure. Then again, it's a Ferrari, so we doubt the finished product will be anything but stunning.

Expect to see more of the F620 as it continues its development testing over the next few months. If things move along at a steady pace, we could see the production car debut as early as the Geneva Motor Show in March.
Ferrari 599 successor takes shape originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 11 Nov 2011 09:59:00 EST. Whether Ferrari ends up building the rumored Fernando Alonso edition or not, the SA Aperta will stand as one of the most exclusive iterations in the production run of the 599. Only 80 examples of the roadster were produced, but for those thinking even that's not exclusive enough, Novitec Rosso has announced an aftermarket customization package that takes the concept even further.

The German tuning house known for its octane-drenched stallions has fitted Ferrari's 6.0-liter V12 with a pair of superchargers that boosts output to 876 horsepower and 646 lb-ft of torque - a good 215 hp and 178 lb-ft over stock. With a powder-coated stainless exhaust and riding on 21-inch wheels up front and 22s around back, Novitec says its Aperta will hit 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.1 seconds and hit a top end of 211 mph.

At those speeds, we wouldn't expect to see one sitting still for long, so check it out in the high-res image gallery for what's likely to be your only look at this twin-scroll beast.
Novitec Rosso spools Ferrari SA Aperta up past 800 horsepower originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 07 Nov 2011 13:01:00 EST.
The Ferrari 599 has given birth to a staggering array of variants. There was the original GTB Fiorano. Then the HGTE with improved handling dynamics. There was the China edition, the HY-KERS concept, the 599XX track car, the GTO and two roadster variants: the P540 Superfast and the SA Aperta. But while the entire 599 range is expected to be replaced soon, rumor has it there could be one final variant in the pipeline to see it off in grand style.

Word around the Internet chat boards like FerrariChat and Teamspeed is that Ferrari is planning to pay tribute to its star Formula One driver with a 599 Fernando Alonso edition. According to rampant speculation, the Alonso edition 599 will be lighter than any of the previous models, and therefore quicker. Tipped to be released in January, production is expected to be limited to an extremely exclusive 40 examples.

It is possible that the speculation was sparked by the F10 Tribute Edition which Alonso himself is seen driving in the video after the jump. That was little more than an existing 599 GTO specced out by a customer in Scuderia livery. We'll just have to wait and see whether anything more comes of the rumors. But if Ferrari does choose to unveil such a model, it would be likely to do so at the Finali Mondiali cavallino-fest taking place this weekend at Mugello.
Continue reading Ferrari planning Fernando Alonso edition 599?
Ferrari has rolled out a few tasty bits of news courtesy of Car and Driver. The Italian sports car manufacturer has made it clear that the successor to the legendary Enzo will come to the party packing a V12 engine mated to a hybrid system. While Ferrari has already hinted that the company is seriously considering electrification with concepts like the 599 HY-KERS, CEO Amedeo Felisa said that a production Ferrari hybrid would have to include some sort of efficiency-boosting system in addition to a performance adder like a kinetic energy recovery system.

Felisa also said that the replacement for the company's 599 will feature somewhere around 700 horsepower. The machine will keep its front-engine, rear-wheel drive layout, but will rely on aluminum alloys for its body structure instead of carbon fiber. Felisa says that the absurd power in the future 599 is not a response to the Lamborghini Aventador, however.

Uh huh.
Ferrari Enzo successor powered by V12 hybrid, next 599 to get 700+ hp originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 06 Oct 2011 19:28:00 EST.
History has a way of putting things into perspective that contemporary developments can't. Take, for example, the Ferrari 599. Over the years, the front-engined V12 supercar spawned many derivatives, but while the GTO and XX track car stood out among the ultimate renditions of the model, the vast majority of those built were the more common GTB Fiorano version. That's where Vörsteiner comes in.

The German aftermarket firm makes a series of body kits and wheel upgrades for a variety of vehicles, particularly Bentleys, Mercedes, Porsches and BMWs. But now Vörsteiner has turned its attention to a Ferrari for the first time.

The result is called the 599-VX, and it imbues the 599 GTB with some of the visual aggression of the 599 GTO and 599XX. The package includes an eight-piece body kit with a new front end, hood, side skirts, rear deck lid, rear intake panel and rear bumper with integrated diffuser, all made of carbon fiber. A set of lightweight wheels forged from aircraft-grade aluminum round out the package that is set to be unveiled shortly.

Lucky for you, the good folks at Vörsteiner, eGarage.com and photographer Albert Roxas gave us this sneak peek at what they have in store. Take a closer look in the high-res image gallery for more.
Vörsteiner previews GTO-look Ferrari 599-VX originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 11 Aug 2011 18:59:00 EST.
It's a real shame that Ferrari is only building one Superamerica 45, because the car is gorgeous. Besides the lovely Blu Antille paint, the flying buttresses that mold the roof structure into the rear bodywork, and the body-colored wheels, this thing has one of the slickest roof mechanisms out there.

Hit a button, and the lid on the 599 GTB Fiorano-based roadster does a full backflip, executing a perfect landing on the car's rear deck. It's quick and sleek, and really helps sell the entire package. Like we said earlier, the Superamerica 45 is a one-off, built especially for collector Peter Kalikow.

Kalikow commissioned the car to be a modern version of the 1961 Ferrari Superamerica 400 that graces his collection. Color us envious.
Typically, Ferrari works its products in two phases. First comes the all-new model, then a number of years later comes a substantially updated version that carries it through until the next all-new model comes along. Think 360 Modena to F430, 456 GT to 456M, 550 Maranello to 575M... noticing a pattern here?

That's what Ferrari was originally planning to do with the 599 GTB Fiorano, but the latest reports indicate that the company has opted to skip the updated 599 and go straight to an all-new model. Which may make perfect sense, considering how many derivatives the existing 599 has spawned, from the HGTE to the latest GTO (pictured above).

The decision is reportedly spurred by the radical step forward which the company has taken from the 612 Scaglietti to the new FF. The 599's successor won't pack the FF's all-wheel-drive system, or its shooting brake body style, but is likely to take advantage of its direct-injection 6.3-liter V12 to the tune of some 700 horsepower.

Sources expect the next front-engine/rear-drive V12 supercar to come roaring out of the gates at Maranello sometime late next year.
Ferrari to skip 599M and go straight for all-new model? originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 06 May 2011 14:30:00 EST.
With the new FF already released, the focus at Ferrari is reportedly turning to a successor for the 599 GTB Fiorano, which, according to various sources, will pack "at least" 700 horsepower - the magic number achieved by arch-rival Lamborghini's new Aventador.

The engine is expected to form the latest stage in the evolution of the V12 that powers the 599 GTB at 612 hp, upped to 661 hp for the 599 GTO and has produced as much as 850 horses in the FXX Evoluzione. With direct injection, a version of the same engine produces 651 hp in the FF - the same output as the Enzo for which the engine was originally designed - and a good 120 more horses than the 612 Scaglietti it replaces.

A lighter aluminum chassis is likely to further improve performance, but don't expect the all-wheel-drive system from the FF to drive the 599's successor too. While a future version could foreseeably adopt the system, reports indicate the car will (at least initially) be rear-wheel drive only, but the replacement for the California could incorporate all-wheel drive like its big brother.

We're not saying we're psychic or anything, but after years of bringing you the best - and the worst - from the automotive industry, we're getting a bit of a handle on what you, our dedicated readers, are thinking. So here goes: you were thinking that what the Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano really needed was a set of fleur-de-lis wheels.

Okay, so maybe we're a little off. But those pentagram alloys on the original 599 didn't do it any favors. And these? They take 20 days to build. They're forged from aluminum and titanium and have a two-tone anthracite and black finish. But the Comte Noir (French for "black count") edition Fiorano is about more than those fancy wheels.

German tuner Graf Weckerle has also upped the 6-liter V12's output from 620 horsepower to a whopping 835. No word on exactly how they did that, but we wouldn't be surprised if they turned to an experienced Ferrari tuner like Edo Competition or Novitec Rosso for assistance. They've also mounted a new coil-over suspension and adjustable shocks, and hopefully upgraded the brakes to go with the extra power. Otherwise those pretty flowery wheels won't do you any good as the apex approaches.

Introduced in 2006, the Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano has earned its place as one of the top GTs on the road today. And it's spawned its fair share of derivatives along the way, but with the new year around the corner, the 599 is about to turn five years old. Which isn't a very long product lifecycle if its replacement were launched tomorrow, but it's apparently enough to have Maranello preparing for a successor - or at the very least, an update - in due course.

Spied lapping the test track of the same name, this Fiorano test mule could be our first look at the 599's eventual successor, or perhaps a higher performance derivative. And as you'll see for yourself in the video after the jump, it sounds very sweet indeed. Thanks for the footage, Marco!

2011 Ferrari SA Aperta - Click above for high-res image gallery

Ferrari has pulled back the covers on its rumored topless 599 GTB Fiorano before the roadster's unveil at the 2010 Paris Motor Show. We've got bad news if you were hoping to sink your teeth into this particular convertible, though. The Prancing Horse is only planning to make 80 examples of its newest creation and each one has already been spoken for. The company is calling the drophead the SA Aperta in honor of none other than Sergio and Andrea Pininfarina. Their contribution to Ferrari design needs no introduction.

Ferrari says that the SA Aperta sits closer to the tarmac than just about any other of the company's products and that the creation is far more than some hacksaw version of the hardtop 599. While a simple cloth top will keep the rain off your back should the weather turn sour, Ferrari says that it has poured substantial effort into developing the chassis to maintain the same level of stiffness that the coupe version of the 599 enjoys. Those lucky enough to get their hands on the car will still find the same meaty V12 mounted up front. Hit the jump for the press release.

The 599 GTO being the fastest road-going Ferrari ever to roll out of Maranello, you don't stand much chance of seeing one sitting still. Of course, the limited run of 599 examples doesn't help. But as if an excuse were needed, that does give us a reason to bring you the latest batch of high-resolution images showing the Prancing Goat in all its glory.

You can check 'em all out in the gallery below. That is, assuming you haven't seen enough from the seemingly endless stream of videos that have circulated since the supercar's debut. Yeah, we didn't think so.

Chris Harris and the Ferrari 599 GTO on track - Click above to watch videos after the jump

So, if you were watching Chris Harris give the Ferrari 599 GTO what for and thinking, "Yeah, but can you can only really use a car like that on a track," sit back and prepare to be vindicated. The gurus at EVO have been so kind as to release a three-part video series showing exactly what can be accomplished if the car is unleashed on the Ferrari Fiorano test track. And let's just say you don't hear him complain about the air-conditioning this time around.

The first segment sees Harris wedged in the cockpit with the insanely fast Raffael De Simone at the wheel - the same guy who managed to fling the car around the Nürburgring in 6:58.1. If you like seeing the typically even-keeled Harris get surprised by the wicked carbon ceramic brakes on the 599 GTO, you can check it out on the EVO site.

But we're more interested in watching Harris himself shuffle the Prancing Horse. While there's a profusion of descriptors like "quick" "awesome" and "outrageous" thrown about during the brief segments, it's interesting to see the car's driver aids come into play - and just how far they'll let the car get out of line before reigning you in. Hit the jump to find out.

EVO reviews the Ferrari 599 GTO - Click above to watch video after the jump

Ah yes, the Ferrari 599 GTO - the sinister odd duck in the Ferrari stable. It goes without saying that any one of us would give any number of appendages for a shot at the flappy paddles in this particular Prancing Horse. You probably already know that the car gets its grunt from a 6.0-liter V12 distilled from the same mill that powers the mighty Enzo, though in the right hands, the 599 GTO is actually quicker than the discontinued Ferrari supercar. You're likely also aware that the chassis is a whopping 430 pounds lighter than the more pedestrian 599 GTB.

That's all fine and good, but we're betting our britches that you don't know what the car sounds like as it gets flung around the Italian countryside. For that, we turn to the ever-talented Chris Harris at EVO. The guy was lucky enough to get some seat time in the barely road-legal 599 GTO and took along a few cameras to share his experience. You can hop the jump for the full show, but if you're looking for your own personal moment of Zen, we suggest you skip ahead to around 2:30. You can thank us later. Thanks for the tip, Michael!
