Nissan has made three announcements, all of which intend to sharpen the global significance and sales of its NISMO performance arm. Calling it "a new era for NISMO as its global performance car and motorsports brand," Carlos Ghosn cut the ribbon on the new, larger, nicer NISMO headquarters in Yokohama, Japan. For the first time since the division was founded in 1984, all of its employees are located in one place that was dubbed "a hothouse of passion and performance." Sign us up.

There, the team will start overhauling Nissan's entire range with NISMO models. The Juke NISMO is right around the corner for the US market, the second generation of the 370Z NISMO is coming for 2014, the first GT-R NISMO is being developed, and after that will come "a range of affordable performance Nissan models from small cars to flagship sports cars" - a new model every year. The expanded product line will mean that markets that haven't had access to NISMO's works will finally be able to buy them.

The last big news is that from now on NISMO will manage every one of Nissan's global motorsports programs, and its largest initiative will be prepping an entry for Le Mans in 2014. While Nissan has left the DeltaWing project, it hasn't walked away from experimental racers: the brand aims to have "a pioneering Nissan race car showcasing electric technology" ready in 15 months that shows "a new approach to innovation and excitement."

With the entire Nissan 370Z lineup having just received some slight tweaks for the 2013 model year, the sportier Nismo model is getting a few more upgrades for its 2014 model year to give it an even more unique appearance. These changes include new gray accents and red striping on the outside, and inside, an Alcantara-wrapped steering wheel and a new red Nismo tachometer front and center for the driver to easily see.

The 2014 Nissan 370Z Nismo is debuting today at the Chicago Auto Show, and it will go on sale this summer offered in just four exterior colors: Pearl White, Magnetic Black, Gun Metallic and Solid Red. As for the coupe's performance, it still retains the higher 350-horsepower rating from the 3.7-liter V6, which is paired solely to the six-speed manual transmission. Other performance add-ons include a more aerodynamic front fascia and rear spoiler, 19-inch wheels with a sport suspension and a strut tower brace for better rigidity.

Typically Jay Leno's Garage gives us cool insights on rare, old and sometimes forgotten car models. In the latest episode, however, Jay takes us along to visit Nissan in Japan, where he talks about the next-generation of Z car.

The usually well-informed Leno starts the episode not knowing exactly what he's driving in a very special edition Nissan Fairlady 240ZG, though he does pronounce himself a fast fan of the original Z. After briefly motoring around Zama, Japan, The Chin drops in on the Nissan Technical Center, and gets the chance to ask Nissan design boss Shiro Nakamura, if there will be a new Z to mark Nissan's 80th anniversary in 2013. Jay also takes the opportunity to offer some insight as to what he'd like to see in a 2014 successor to the current 370Z.

Good times, as usual, with the king of car collecting.
Convertibles are a highly specialized tool that come with compromises. They require a warm climate and sunshine to achieve their promise, but at the same time stick you with sacrificed rigidity and extra weight all year round. Many droptop drivers happily accept those trade-offs, but the deal-killer for me is privacy. I just don't like everyone at the intersection knowing what's in my iPod, or that Ira Flatow and Science Friday are about to take a short break.

So I am not a convertible person, but with days becoming shorter and summertime temperatures fading from the five-day forecast, I certainly didn't mind setting aside my predilection for closed quarters to enjoy this 2013 Nissan 370Z Roadster.

Driving Notes

This thing is expensive! $50,055 as-tested including a $780 destination charge. The starting price of a base 370 Roadster is $41,470, which is over $8,000 more than the coupe's base price. For comparison's sake, the base price of a 2013 Ford Mustang GT Convertible with a 420-horsepower V8 is $35,300.

Nissan is lauded for its V6 engines, but in this guise, the 3.7-liter isn't one of my favorites. Here it produces 332 hp at 7,000 RPM and 270 pound-feet of torque at 5,200 RPM. The torque isn't there to push you into the seat at any speed. Rather, the engine needs to be worked to find the power higher in the rev range, which is fine because...

This transmission is excellent. Nissan's six-speed manual is terrifically precise and feels stout enough to handle much more power than it's being asked to divide here. The Touring model gets SynchroRev Match as part of the $2,380 sport package, which, with S-Mode engaged, blips the throttle on every downshift to match the engine's RPMs to the transmission. It's great to enter a gear with the engine already waiting for you and the sound it makes has you feeling like a race car driver who knows what he's doing.

While Nissan recommends that you operate the convertible top with the parking brake engaged and the brake pedal depressed, the car can just be left in Neutral (or any other gear except Reverse, for that matter) in order to flip its lid. That said, if the car is moving, the top won't budge. It's also slow, clunky and loud in its operation. With the roof up, the car's silhouette is different than the coupe's and not as flattering in my eyes. Lastly, when putting the roof down after it rained, I noticed the roof itself leaves dirt marks on the cover under which it's stowed.

This is strictly a two-seater that I suspect wouldn't be very comfortable for drivers and passengers over six-feet tall. The trunk is also miniscule (4.2 cubic feet) and there's only a couple of small parcel shelves behind the seats. A practical vehicle this is not.

It looks like the (smaller) Miata in terms of size, though from behind the wheel it's more like the larger, heavier Mustang to drive (the Mustang GT Convertible weighs only 122 pounds more, while the Miata - with a retractable hardtop - weighs 886 pounds less).

The EPA estimates the 370Z Roadster will return 17 miles per gallon in the city and 24 mpg on the highway. I spent most of my time with the car off the highway, and my right foot was certainly having fun. That translated into 16-17 mpg for the week it spent with me. Oh, and premium fuel is recommended.

The 370Z Roadster's price has it competing with cars like the Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class, BMW Z4 and even Porsche Boxster, while cars like the Mustang and Camaro Convertible offer much more power and practicality for far less money. There just isn't an equation that adds up to the 370Z Roadster being a good bargain. The hardtop, on the other hand...

Nissan has unleashed a new ad campaign aimed directly at football fans. The six spots all feature former Heisman Trophy winners as they shack up in the "Heisman House," including 2011 winner Robert Griffin III as the rookie.

Other familiar faces also make a showing, including the sport's only two-time Heisman winner, Archie Griffin from The Ohio State University, as well as Herschel Walker and Matt Leinart. All in all, the ads boast 12 trophy winners and one professional actor. Sean Astin, star of Rudy, shows up for a spell alongside everyone else.

What does all this have to do with Nissan? Not much... aside from the fact that a few of the company's 2013 models show up on screen briefly. We get glimpses of machines like the Leaf, Altima, Pathfinder, Titan and 370Z Roadster between scenes of somewhat stilted dialog.
Auto Express has confirmed that Nissan is planning a slew of performance models under the Nismo wing, including a number of high-performance RS variants.

Nissan executive VP of product planning Andy Palmer told the UK magazine that the Nismo brand should be considered "an affordable alternative to Mercedes' AMG division," and continued, "Nismo versions will get a power hike of 15 percent, but the focus will be on distinctive styling." The Nismo Juke will be the first of these models to arrive early next year. It will boast a unique body kit, as well as 18-inch wheels and bright red side view mirrors. Underhood, the 1.6-liter mill will be massaged to produce 215 horsepower - an increase of 28 hp.

According to Palmer, "We'll also tune the suspension and steering, so customers can get more out of the power they have."

Next to get the Nismo treatment is the all-electric Nissan Leaf. Originally shown at the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show, it will feature blue accents instead of the red found on other Nismo models. Power will jump to 125 from the standard 110 horsepower.

2013 will also see the introduction of a Nismo variant of the GT-R, as well as the latest version of the Nismo Z, which is already sold here in the U.S.

If you have the insatiable need for speed, Nissan will be unleashing an RS range of models, boasting track-focused performance. Palmer indicated that there would be a Juke RS making 270 horsepower. It was also noted that there would be RS versions of the GT-R and 370Z. We can't wait to see this onslaught of performance that Nissan has in store for the next year or two. We'll keep you updated on how these models progress.
Nissan working on high-performance Nismo, RS models originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 13 Aug 2012 16:28:00 EST.
How often do you leave a comment on a post, "It would be cool if that car had (insert Part X)." It's always fun to think "what if?" Well, Nissan has taken advantage of the creative minds of enthusiasts everywhere by crowdsourcing the build of a custom 370Z. Nothing was off limits for modification. The engine, wheels, tires, interior, and exterior were all subject to vote. Nissan even asked you what suspension to use.

The build is finally complete and Nissan is ready to show off the fruits of your choices. In stage one, Steven Lam and his team of fellow mechanics removed the front clip and hoses in order to pull the engine. Once out, the 3.7-liter six was fitted with a Greddy twin turbo kit that Lam estimates will push output over 500 horsepower. To complement the twin snails, fans chose a Greddy Ti-C catback system for more freely flowing exhaust.

Next up was the suspension, which was left to a vote by Autoblog readers (you're just gonna have to click on the first video below to see which one was selected), followed by a Stoptech big brake kit.

In stage two, the car was dyno'd, the fuel/air mix tweaked, and the aesthetics were addressed. Click on the second video to see their progress, and the final video for the eventual reveal of the crowd-customized 370Z.

Continue reading Nissan shows off crowdsourced 370Z

Nissan shows off crowdsourced 370Z originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 09 Aug 2012 14:58:00 EST.
Every flavor the 2013 Nissan 370Z has now been priced - the latest model with the new front fascia, colors and wheels starts at $33,120 for the 332-horsepower coupe with the six-speed manual, and a $780 destination fee on top of that. The MSRP is an $840 rise over the 2012 car. Opt for the seven-speed automatic and you're looking at $34,420. Add the Touring package to either car and watch the bottom line grow by $4,700.

The 370Z Roadster is a leap to the next integer, beginning at $41,470 for the base, seven-speed automatic model, which is a $970 bump over the 2012. Throw on the Touring package with the manual tranny and you'll spend $44,170, the auto version will run $45,470.

And then there was NISMO: the bump to 350 hp, suspension and styling tweaks and lightweight wheels comes in at $43,020. The Nissan's competitive set is a tough nut, and the Z is geared toward a crowd that seeks more than just numbers: its MSRP is more expensive than the less powerful BMW 128i and more powerful Ford Mustang GT. The '13 Z is also about a grand less than the more powerful Hyundai Genesis Coupe that also figures in its competitive set, before like-for-like options are thrown in. And the Z is less expensive than the less-powerful Audi TT that Nissan would like you compare it to, before you put any options on the TT. Have a read of the press release below for more details.
Continue reading Refreshed 2013 Nissan 370Z priced from $33,120*

Refreshed 2013 Nissan 370Z priced from $33,120* originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 24 Jul 2012 11:25:00 EST.
Nissan is reportedly hard at work on its next-generation Z. According to Inside Line, designers are already churning away on a concept version of the 2015 Z that may bow at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show. The report notes that Shiro Nakamura, head of design for Nissan, says the new Z will be both smaller and lighter than the current 370Z.

The model will also be geared toward a wider audience, and Nissan may be investigating the possibility of ditching the tried-and-true 3.7-liter VQ V6 for a turbocharged four-cylinder, a move that would almost certainly help fuel efficiency. The current Z is saddled with a lackluster 26 mpg highway, and strong early sales of cars like the Scion FR-S certainly indicate certain buyers are willing to drop a few ponies for a machine that's engaging to drive and at least somewhat fuel efficient.

Blasphemy? Maybe, but the thought of an engaging, lightweight turbo four sports car is the stuff dreams are made of - it's the "wider audience" part of the discussion that has us concerned as enthusiasts. A smaller Z would likely mean abandoning the Z's FM platform which also underpins machines like the Infiniti G Coupe and Sedan as well as the FX softroader.
Nissan has finally wrapped up work on its crowd-sourced project 370Z. The company put the sports car on a dyno for final tuning and wound up with somewhere around 504 horsepower. That's not too shabby given the jump in gusto was gleaned from a few bolt-on parts.

Nissan then set about fitting the steering wheel and shift nob as chosen by the teaming internet masses. A set of custom Recaro seats also replaced factory buckets. With the interior squared away, the company turned its eye toward ironing out the exterior.

A set of lightweight forged Volk wheels took the place of the factory rollers, and a new matte grey vinyl wrap took care of the standard yellow paint. Nissan debuted its creation at Z Dayz last weekend. Scroll down for a look at the video for yourself.
Continue reading Nissan crowd-sourced Project 370Z moves to stage two

Nissan crowd-sourced Project 370Z moves to stage two originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 22 May 2012 19:40:00 EST.

Subaru BRZ and Scion FR-S got you excited? Well, it appears the new Toyobaru twins might be moving the needle at other automakers, too. According to the Sydney Morning Herald, the pair may have challenged Nissan to once again reinvestigate its on-again, off-again plans for an affordable, lightweight sports coupe of its own. Nissan's Chief Creative Officer, Shiro Nakamura, says his employer is looking at downsizing its Z sports car, though it isn't clear if that would mean the Japanese automaker would field two separate Z models or just replace the current 370Z with a smaller, less costly model.

"I much prefer smaller sports car," Nakamura tells the Herald. "It is the time to look at that. With 370Z, we still don't know next generation will have a larger or smaller engine."

If Nissan were to reduce the size of the 370's powerplant, it would be the first time that model's displacement has dropped. Since the Z gets its model designation from the size of its engine (3.7 liter V6), Nissan could have a problem marketing a smaller Z called the 300Z, since the last time a new 300Z was sold in the States was way back in 1986.

More likely would be the revival of long-forgotten nameplates like 200SX or 240SX. Either would almost certainly be direct competition for the Subaru and Scion rear-drive coupes.

Nakamura reminded fans that even if the 370Z loses some cubic inches, Nissan will still have the young but already legendary GT-R. When asked if Nissan would be willing to support three sports cars, Nakamura says, "If there is a market, we will do it."
Nissan renews talk of sub-370Z sports car to take on Subaru BRZ originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 09 Apr 2012 14:30:00 EST.

Nissan knows how passionate fans of the company's 370Z can be. The enthusiast community has long embraced the Z as a capable performer right out of the box and a willing platform that accepts a wide range of aftermarket modifications. The Japanese automaker has something special planned for this year's ZDayZ event in May. Each year, Z fans from all over the country descend on the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in East Tennessee and Western North Carolina, and this time, they'll have a chance to take a look at a very special vehicle when they aren't bombing down the infamous Tail of the Dragon.

The company is building the ultimate 370Z track car by allowing fans to vote which components will be used in the project, and they've turned to Autoblog for help picking one of the vehicle's most important systems: the suspension.

By defanged, we mean, of course, that the 2013 Nissan 370Z no longer sports vampish extensions of its front fascia. We don't mean to imply that its down on power - the carryover 3.7-liter V6 still puts out 332 horsepower, and the NISMO's 3.7-liter is still blessed with 350 horses.

Besides the change to its face, it'll take an astute observer to spot the differences between the 2012 and 2013 Z. Subtle changes to the lighting both front and rear, combined with new 18- and 19-inch wheels, round out the exterior updates.

Nissan will officially debut its 2013 370Z tomorrow at the Chicago Auto Show, and the changes fulfill the dictionary definition of "subtle." The new 19-inch wheels and Euro-tuned shocks on models with the Sport Package are the big news, but details like vertical LEDs, 18-inch wheels on the non-Sport Z, two new colors and a red reflector out back add just enough signals to make a difference to model-year-conscious buyers.

The refreshed 2013 370Z will come in coupe, convertible and NISMO trims, with the latter iteration getting more speakers for its Bose audio system. Oddly, though, that same trim does not get some of the changes for the new model year, including the Euro-tuned shocks that will debut on the Sport Package.

The 3.7-liter V6 with 332 horsepower carries over, as does the same 3.7-liter with 350 horsepower in the NISMO, and the new Z goes on sale in June. Check out the press release after the jump, and stay tuned to get more images and info from our team at the Chicago Auto Show.
Continue reading 2013 Nissan 370Z goes evolution, not revolution

2013 Nissan 370Z goes evolution, not revolution originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 07 Feb 2012 12:00:00 EST.
Back on Thanksgiving Day of 2011, we saw what happens when a C5 Chevrolet Corvette goes head-to-head on public roads against a C6 Vette - the older Vette spears into the passenger-side door of the newer Vette. The video was our most popular post of 2011, so we know that well over a million viewers saw the ill-advised drag race. We think that video illustrated that racing on public roads was a bad idea, but sometimes, accidents happen even without a race.

Hit the jump to see what happens when a pair of tuned-out Nissan 350Z models do their best impression of the Thanksgiving Day Melee. The YouTube page claims that the two cars were actually traveling at the speed limit (read: not racing) as part of a caravan of Z models, when the black, supercharged Z coupe tapped its throttle and lost control, veering into the passing lane and right into the path of a Z roadster.

Still, the collision looks like déjà vu all over again, except the quick video is better this time and we actually hear the impact and see the parts flying all over the freeway. The accident reportedly didn't result in any serious injuries.
Continue reading First it was Vette on Vette violence, now it's Z on Z carnage

First it was Vette on Vette violence, now it's Z on Z carnage originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 25 Jan 2012 12:30:00 EST.
Everyone's got their favorite superheroes, and their reasons for liking them. Ours drive cool cars. Comic-book-turned-big-screen do-gooders like Batman (and his mild-mannered alter-ego Bruce Wayne) and Iron Man (Tony Stark). That's just one of the reasons we're stoked for The Driver.

The animated series-in-the-making centers around a mysterious vigilante who chases down criminally reckless drivers on the streets of Los Angeles, and a shutterbug sidekick who follows him around as he puts the baddies to shame in Gorillaz-style animation. It's shaping up to be as car-obsessed as the best of us, and after launching the first trailer back in April of 2010, the creators have now (the better part of two years later) released some additional footage. Follow the jump to see Nissan's 370Z square off against its own GT-R.
Continue reading Second trailer for The Driver finally speeds into action

Second trailer for The Driver finally speeds into action originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 12 Jan 2012 14:58:00 EST.
Fifth Gear host Tiff Needell had such a good time throwing the Renault Sport Megane 265 Trophy around the track that it made him ask a silly question. Could the 261-horsepower, front-wheel drive, four-seat hot hatch lap quicker than the 324-hp, rear-wheel drive, two-seat Nissan 370Z?

This version of the Renault lapped the Nürburgring in 8:07.97, the quickest front-wheel-drive road car on the timing sheet. Even so, 63 hp down and more than 70 pounds heavier by gross weight, one could expect the Megane to have a hard time even keeping up with the Z. But on a wet track and at the hands of Subaru Rally driver and James Bond stunt driver Mark Higgins (he of the epic Isle of Man save), expectations have a way of going sideways.
Nissan is headed to the Dubai 24 Hours with a specially prepared 370Z. While the 410-horsepower Z is an impressive piece of hardware, we're more interested in who's behind the wheel. This year, Nissan will take to the track with a full team of racers who have graduated from the company's GT Academy. The four-man team is made up of individuals who got their start on the virtual tracks of the Gran Turismo video game franchise before beating out the competition for a spot on track.

Lucas Ordonez of Madrid won the 2008 GT Academy, and the young driver has since managed to take second place in the LMP2 class of the 2011 Le Mans series. The 26-year old also took home the honor of being named Rookie Of The Year in the 2011 Le Mans International Cup. Ordonez will be joined by 23-year-old Frenchman Jordon Tressman, who won the 2010 GT Academy and the 2011 Blancpain Endurance Series.

Jann Mardenborough, the 20-year-old racer who won the 2011 GT Academy will also join the team alongside this year's GT Academy USA winner, Bryan Heikotter. Hit the jump for the full press release.
Continue reading Nissan fielding driving team of only GT Academy winners for Dubai 24 Hours

Nissan fielding driving team of only GT Academy winners for Dubai 24 Hours originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 19 Dec 2011 16:00:00 EST.
Nissan is recalling certain 370Z and Infiniti G37 Coupe models due to an improperly calibrated auto-reverse feature on the vehicle's windows. Around 1,788 2011 and 2012 models may have been built with a window switch controller that won't actuate the auto-reverse quickly enough. Should someone accidentally get a body part trapped in the window, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says that a "pinch injury" may result. It's unclear whether anyone has been injured as a result of the calibration error at this juncture, but Nissan says that the automaker will fix the power window switches free of charge.

The recall is set to begin around November 28, and owners of affected vehicles can expect to hear from Nissan shortly about the program. Hit the jump to read the full recall notice.
Continue reading Nissan 370Z and Infiniti G37 recalled over pinching windows

Nissan 370Z and Infiniti G37 recalled over pinching windows originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 16 Nov 2011 18:45:00 EST.
