McLaren P1 undergoing winter testing - video screencap

Even though McLaren will only be building 375 examples of its new P1 hybrid supercar, it has to make sure the high-performance coupes are ready for just about any weather conditions. For its cold-weather testing, McLaren headed to the Arctic Circle to put the P1 through its paces, which also provided a perfect opportunity for some good photos and video. We've seen the P1 in person now in full production trim, but this artfully camouflaged prototype proves that the 903-horsepower supercar looks good in just about any color.

Incidentally, McLaren has also announced that as a part of its 50th anniversary celebration, the new P1 will be a featured car at the Goodwood Festival of Speed this July, along with some of the firm's vintage Can-Am racers. The video and press release are both posted below.

2014 McLaren P1 supercar concept - front three-quarter view on show stand

McLaren took the wraps off its upcoming P1 supercar nearly five months ago at the Paris Motor Show, but the automaker refused to release details about its interior, powerplant or performance - those juicy details would all have to wait.

Yet after a private showing in New York, followed by another exclusive event in Beverly Hills, McLaren began to slowly trickle out information about the P1's instrument cluster and passenger cabin, before finally disclosing its 903 horsepower hybrid powerplant earlier this month.

Finally, after much speculation, McLaren has revealed the last piece of the puzzle and announced its tested performance figures. The 100 km/h benchmark (62 mph) falls in "less than three seconds" while the 200 km/h barrier (124 mph) is shattered in "under seven seconds." Lastly, the rear-wheel drive P1 will hit 300 km/h (186 mph) in "no more than 17 seconds" (an impressive 11 seconds faster than its legendary McLaren F1). Those blistering numbers put the P1 among a very small and elite group, with members like Bugatti, Koenigsegg and Hennessey - the fastest road cars on the planet.

If you are wondering how much it costs to embarrass a Ferrari, McLaren also broke its pricing embargo today. Base price, in the United States, is a cool $1,150,000.

McLaren P1 - running with camouflage - front three-quarter viewMcLaren has dropped official power figures for the company's upcoming P1. The new hypercar will come packing 903 horsepower and 663 pound-feet of torque from the combination of a 3.8-liter, twin-turbocharged V8 engine and an electric motor. That's right: this sucker is a hybrid. The internal combustion engine features a few tweaks to improve cooling, and McLaren says the block uses a special casting to incorporate the motor. As a result, the P1 features a boost system that can serve up an instantaneous 176.5 horsepower dumped straight to the seven-speed dual clutch transmission. The driver can summon up that grunt on command by pressing the steering-wheel-mounted Instant Power Assist System button.

What's more, McLaren has figured out a way to use the electric motor to improve shift times. The P1 applies instant negative torque with each shift, dropping engine speed quickly and precisely for the upshift. Engineers have also incorporated additional technology from the company's Formula One efforts, including a Drag Reduction System. Push a button on the steering wheel and the rear wing shifts to reduce drag by 23 percent, providing the sensation of a boost in power. We've had several chances to get up close and personal with the McLaren P1 since its debut back in September at the Paris Motor Show, but McLaren has literally kept us in the dark about the car's interior thanks to a heavy tint covering all of its windows. With the company preparing the car for its production debut next month at the Geneva Motor Show, we're finally getting our first look inside the car courtesy of a few official images.

Opening up the P1's butterfly doors reveals an interior that was designed to be as close to a racecar as possible, so the lack of amenities and the amount of exposed carbon fiber inside the car are not surprising. From the fixed driver's seat, which is custom to each buyer and weighs just 23 pounds, the car definitely looks the part of a street-legal racecar with features such as the Alcantara-wrapped steering wheel, reconfigurable digital gauge cluster and a carbon fiber waterfall center stack with navigation, audio system and HVAC controls. The long windshield and panoramic roof are meant to give the P1's cabin a feel similar to the cockpit of a fighter jet.

There's only a few more weeks to wait to see the car in its full glory, but until then, enjoy the new pictures from McLaren and scroll down for an official press release on the car's interior.

McLaren P1 supercar official development video - screencap

A few nights ago, our own Michael Harley visited the McLaren P1 at an event in Beverly Hills, California. A recording of the engine note was played, and that led to speculation that the P1 will get a hi-po version of the 3.8-liter V8 employed by the MP4-12C, rocking something like 800 horsepower.

McLaren has been testing the P1, getting it showroom ready for its 500-unit run, and part of that involves full-throttle test-track duty with its tail held high. After checking out the official development prototype "spy shots," you can hear that engine note for yourself and guess how much flame spitting horsepower The Woking Wonder is pushing by watching the video below.
