Chevrolet has officially dropped power figures for the 2014 Corvette Stingray. The sports car's 6.2-liter V8 can crank out up to 460 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 465 pound-feet of torque at 4,000 rpm. Most of the torque, up to 316 lb-ft, is available from just 1,000 rpm, and wide open the LT1 V8 produces just 5 lb-ft less than the outgoing LS7 in the Z06. Mercy.

Using the standard exhaust, the engine yields 455 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque. Chevrolet estimates that's good enough to get the 2014 Corvette to 60 miles per hour in under four seconds. Even with all that thrust on hand, Chevy says the LT1 is more efficient than ever. Active Fuel Management, direct injection and variable valve timing help cut emissions by 25 percent.

In addition, engineers threw a spate of advancements at the mill, including four-into-one exhaust manifolds, a new intake manifold design and an oil system with piston squirters to keep the cylinders cool under hard use. The system also allows for an available dry-sump oiling system. Check out the full press release below for more information.
He didn't get the trophy, but he did get the <s>girl</s> pace car. San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh - who quarterbacked the Indianapolis Colts from 1994 to 1997 - will lead the 33-car Indianapolis 500 field around The Brickyard in a 2014 Corvette Stingray pace car.

Harbaugh's other connection to the race is that he's a principal in Panther Racing, which has two cars running on Sunday that are powered by Chevrolet engines: JR Hildebrand is starting tenth, teammate Townsend Bell is 22nd. There's a press release below with the kind of juicy quotes you'd expect from all involved.
Continue reading Jim Harbaugh picked to drive Indy 500 Corvette Stingray pace car

Jim Harbaugh picked to drive Indy 500 Corvette Stingray pace car originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 23 May 2013 13:29:00 EST.
It's been a while since Chevrolet offered its Corvette with green paint - well over a decade, in fact. We've known for a while that the new C7 Stingray would be available in Lime Rock Green, but haven't seen it up until now in anything but the antiseptic studio shots offered up on the Corvette's configurator. Well, we can now cross it off the list - at least online - as the first production example has been caught on video at the Lone Star Classic Corvette show by the folks at NCM Insurance.

According to CorvetteBlogger, the last production model to feature such verdant paint dates to 2001, when Chevy offered its sports car in Dark Bowling Green Metallic. But when we think of Vettes in this color spectrum, we tend to think of the Polo Green C4, a deep shade this paint reminds us of. This particular Stingray is fitted with the Z51 performance package, along with the 3LT Brownstone interior. As we think Z51-equipped cars tend to look better in darker shades (which better integrate/disguise the package's additional ductwork), this Lime Rock Green looks pretty good to our eyes.

We haven't seen new green sports cars in some time - perhaps cars like this C7 and the British Racing Green Metallic 2014 Jaguar F-Type will kickstart a revival. What do you think, does the C7 look good in green? Check out the video below and then have your say in Comments.
Continue reading Chevy Corvette Stingray shows off in Lime Rock Green

Chevy Corvette Stingray shows off in Lime Rock Green originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 20 May 2013 13:31:00 EST.
Just a couple days ago, we saw spy shots of a C7 Corvette testing for what we assumed was pace car duty for the Indianapolis 500, and now General Motors has confirmed that the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray will, in fact, lead the field to the green flag for the 97th running of the Indy 500. Not only will this be the 17th consecutive year a GM vehicle has paced the race and the 12th straight time a Chevy has handled pace car duty, but it will also mark the 12th time a Corvette has held this distinction.

Aside from the well-concealed safety lights and the expected decals, no styling or performance upgrades have been made to the Stingray, including its factory Laguna Blue paint scheme. Scroll down for the official press release, and be sure to check out our gallery showing the previous 11 Corvettes to pace the Indy 500.
Continue reading 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray confirmed as Indy 500 pace car

2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray confirmed as Indy 500 pace car originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 02 May 2013 14:55:00 EST.
Although the C7 Corvette may have gotten snubbed at this year's Super Bowl, it looks like the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray will be front and center for some of the brightest lights in automotive racing. These spy shots show Chevrolet engineers testing a Stingray coupe with safety lights added to the front and rear of the car as we normally see on a pace car, and judging by the timing and the history of General Motors pacing the Indianapolis 500, it looks like this Corvette could be getting ready for next month's big race.

We contacted Chevrolet PR, who remained understandably coy on the subject, but we have good reason to believe this is, in fact, the pace car. (We also note the recently-revealed Camaro Convertible Hot Wheels Edition has already been confirmed for race-related duties, yet it hasn't been revealed as the pace car).

Preparing for pace duty, this C7 adds small strobes into the lower grille and a light bar integrated into the rear window opening, and the factory LEDs on the side of the headlights will also be programmed to flash. Judging by the white tape still covering the rocker panels, there could be other changes planned for the car as well. If this is in fact the pace car for the 2013 Indy 500, that would mark the 12th time a Corvette has led the field to the green flag. Either way, we should know soon - the 97th running of the race is Sunday, May 26.
C7 Corvette practicing as Indy 500 pace car? originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 30 Apr 2013 09:27:00 EST.
As much attention as the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray has attracted since its debut back in January, we still have no idea how much the car will cost. Thanks to Chevy's Race To Win Corvette contest, we finally have a pricing estimate of sorts for the hot new coupe.

In addition to winning a trip for two to France and tickets to the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the grand prize winner will also become the proud owner of a C7 Corvette, which has an "approximate retail value" of $71,860. While this would be quite a step up from the $49,600 base MSRP of the 2013 'Vette, keep in mind that this may also include options and taxes associated with the car - depending on where the car is sold, taxes alone could easily be in the $5,000 range. Or, it may just be some sort of estimate.

Regardless of how much the car costs, this sounds like an awesome contest. To enter, just head over to the Race to Win Corvette website.
Chevy's own contest points to C7 Corvette Stingray pricing originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 22 Mar 2013 09:57:00 EST.
There has been no shortage of controversy surrounding the exterior design of the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray since its debut back in January at the Detroit Auto Show. To quell - or possibly stir up - detractors, Autoweek talked to Tom Peters, GM's director of exterior design for performance cars, fullsize trucks and large crossovers, so that he might have a chance to explain/defend the styling of the C7 'Vette, especially when it comes to the car's rump.

In attempting to "create as much newness as possible," Peters says that the squared-off taillights fit the new design better and helped give the new Corvette its own signature styling. In regards to the similarities with the taillights of the Camaro, Peters points out that earlier generations of the two cars shared similarly shaped rear lights in the '60s and early '70s. Around the Autoblog water cooler, some of us think the problem lies not with the taillights but rather with the round exhaust outlets and the tacked-on rear spoiler. Feel free to share your own thoughts in the Comments.

After you've convinced your better half to let you buy a new Corvette, then comes the hard part... actually figuring out which 'Vette you want. While Chevrolet has yet to release the official configurator for the 2014 Corvette Stingray, it did give us something else to kill some time playing around with.

The C7 Corvette "colorizer" recently went online, and it lets you look at the car in all of its available colors and wheel options from four different angles so that when this car does go on sale, you know exactly which one you want. It includes the Corvette's full pallet of colors including Torch Red, Laguna Blue and the hue you see above, Velocity Yellow. Toss in the black wheels, and we're sold. If you have some time this afternoon, be sure to check it out the Corvette colorizer for yourself, and even if you don't have the time, we've put together a gallery with all of the possible color combinations.
Chevy Corvette Stingray "colorizer" lets you chase the rainbow originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 14 Feb 2013 16:29:00 EST.
The launch of the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette is quickly approaching, and before we see the car in its full glory at the Detroit Auto Show, Chevrolet has released a second teaser video for the C7 'Vette. In this video, we see a few more details of the new Corvette than what we saw in the first teaser a couple weeks ago such as a few interior detail shots and a quick glimpse of the car's undercarriage.

With the video focusing on the electric integration of the C7, our best look of the interior revolves around the new gauge cluster with a 200-mile-per-hour speedometer and an all-digital screen housing a large, centralized tachometer and an information display. Later in the video, Chevy shows a quick shot of the new Corvette's rear suspension setup as the car undergoes its final testing.

Check out the cryptic and carefully filmed video after the jump.
Continue reading C7 Corvette's second video teases digital gauges

C7 Corvette's second video teases digital gauges originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 29 Nov 2012 16:39:00 EST.
The redesign of the C7 Corvette, due to be unveiled early next year, is probably cloaked with more secrecy than Area 51. Despite that, information has trickled out since late last year.

Back in November, Jalopnik was the first to show the expected styling based on leaked information they obtained. Last month, we got another sneak peek at the face of the new Chevrolet Corvette thanks to an accidental web preview of the molding process for the front fascia. Based on the leaked information so far, and the Jalopnik images in particular, Trinity Animation produced a slick, detailed video showing what they believe the C7 will look like from all angles and in motion, right down to the LED running lights and Camaro-inspired taillamps.

This video will surely spark additional debate and speculation, but we'll all have to wait until we get closer to next year's Detroit Auto Show before we see our first official pictures - and, more importantly, detailed specs - about the C7.
