The seventh-generation Volkswagen Golf just went on sale in Europe, but it is already off to a promising start. Announced as the Geneva Motor Show kicked off, the newest Golf was named European Car of the Year for 2013 in dominating style over cars like the Subaru BRZ/Toyota GT86 twins, Volvo V40, Ford B-Max and Mercedes-Benz A-Class.
Volkswagen has dramatically cut its internal sales target for Western Europe for 2012. The estimate has been chopped by 140,000 vehicles according to Automotive News. In the report, Bernd Osterloh of VW is quoted telling German newspaper Handelsblatt, "The VW Group is tentatively selling more cars this year than last year. But that is correct that it will be somewhat less than what was originally planned."
Last year, Greenpeace targeted Volkswagen with its VW Dark Side campaign. A twist on the popular Star War-themed Passat commercial that debuted during the 2011 Super Bowl, VW Dark Side pointed out that VW wasn't doing as much as it could to further the cause of more efficient vehicles.
Car and Driver has begun assembling pieces of fact and hypothesis to come up with a picture of the next-generation MkVII Volkswagen Golf. Word is that a larger, edgier, lower and wider evolution of the bread-and-butter hatch will show up earlier than planned in order to make a better case for itself against an upmarket Polo and to take advantage of cost savings.
