Porsche has been steadily bolstering its Panamera line since the car was first introduced adding models like the V6, Hybrid and GTS, and starting next year, it is adding a new model to the mix, the Panamera Platinum Edition. The 2013 Porsche Panamera Platinum Edition goes on sale on January 5, and it is only offered on the V6 models with a starting price of $80,500 for rear-wheel-drive and $84,600 for the all-wheel-drive Panamera 4 version; neither of these prices includes the $975 destination charge.

In terms of visual changes, the Platinum Edition gets unique platinum silver metallic inserts on the lower grille, rear diffuser and on the bottom edges of the door mirrors for a subtle differentiation from the base Panamera. Similarly, the interior adds a few styling upgrades as well with a new black-on-beige coloring throughout the cabin, a sport steering wheel and metallic door sill plates inscribed with "Platinum Edition."

Both versions of this new package represent a premium of more than $4,000 over a Panamera V6, but with this higher price comes plenty of equipment that are options on the base car. The Platinum Edition's standard features include the 19-inch Turbo alloy wheels (normally a $1,950 option), the Bose Audio system (a $1,990 option) and most of the equipment found in the $5,680 Premium Package, including the active bi-Xenon headlights and heated seats for all four passengers.
When we heard that Porsche would be bringing a Panamera wagon concept to Paris, reaction was just as scattered as people's reaction to the Panamera itself; some actually wondering if the Panamera isn't already a wagon, others deciding, to put it kindly, that the back end of Porsche's five-door can only go up, design-wise.

Then we saw leaked pics of the Panamera Sport Turismo Concept and it was a whole different world - one of decidedly confident beauty. Going all junior-Cayenne-with-attitude, the Sport Turismo is "an outlook on a possible Porsche sports car of tomorrow" that we think needs to drop the "possible," add some side mirrors and get with the production program.

Powered by an evolution of Porsche's current hybrid system used in the Panamera S Hybrid, the Sport Turismo Concept's new "e-hybrid" system uses the 333-horsepower, supercharged 3.0-liter V6 and a 95-hp electric motor for 416 combined horses and a 30-kilometer electric range. Unlike the current production system, this e-hybrid setup prioritizes all-electric motivation unless the driver instructs the car otherwise. Interestingly, the Sport Turismo is technically a plug-in hybrid, as the lithium-ion pack can be charged in as little as 2.5 hours when plugged into a wall outlet. Porsche says the combined powertrain is good for a 0-62 mph time in under six seconds, and the Sport Turismo can exceed 80 mph purely on electric power. (You can learn more powertrain specifics by checking out the official PR by scrolling down).

Inside is more conceptual, with a binnacle-mounted TFT screen displaying vehicle information, a black panel screen in the center console, monitors providing feeds from the cameras that substitute for sideview mirrors, and even a touchscreen starting process.

There's really nothing not to like here, and so we can find no reason not to build it. Porsche, you know what to do.
Continue reading Porsche Sport Turismo Concept introduces Panamera to pulchritude and plugging in [w/video]

Porsche Sport Turismo Concept introduces Panamera to pulchritude and plugging in [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 27 Sep 2012 12:00:00 EST.
Some automakers roll out a new model and that's pretty much it, while for others, a new model's introduction is just the starting point. Porsche most definitely falls in the latter category. When a new 911 rolls out, for example, you can bet there will be a dozen or more versions to follow. A new Boxster? Slap a roof on it and in another year or so you've got a new Cayman. So it only stands to reason that the German automaker would do the same with its more family-oriented offerings, the Panamera and Cayenne.

Automobile magazine's European bureau reports that, when Porsche rolls out a restyled Panamera next year, the four-door model will yield the variants that the current model does not. That will likely include a long-wheelbase model for the Chinese market, as well as a potential shooting brake and a possible four-seat cabriolet.

A slant-back version of the Cayenne is also said to be in the works to take on the BMW X6, with a new Cayman to put a roof over the new Boxster's head later this year and a generous array of 911 variants to come out year after year. Couple all those spin-offs with the new Macan crossover, the Pajun (baby Panamera) and a pair of new supercars (918 and 960) to slot in above the 911 range and they're suddenly looking very busy at Zuffenhausen over the next few years.
Porsche gearing up to roll out the variants originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 19 Apr 2012 09:00:00 EST.
Porsche is busily readying a facelift for the Porsche Panamera, and our elite squad of spy photographers recently clicked a few images of the vehicle as it underwent winter testing. Details are scarce as to what, if any changes we can expect from the vehicle mechanically, but the photos clearly show an updated front fascia hidden beneath a bit of cladding. Odds are we can bet on seeing a tweaked headlight design with a reworked front valance. The vehicle's LED daytime running lights look to hang around for another few years as well. The tweaks should help the oddly proportioned Panamera age a bit better moving forward.

Move to the vehicle's rear and Porsche has served up some similarly small adjustments to the rear bumper cap and taillights. The changes aren't revolutionary by any stretch of the imagination, but Porsche has never been one shock and awe with its facelifts.
Porsche Panamera facelift comes into view originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 20 Jan 2012 14:30:00 EST.
