Porsche has become the latest automaker to take advantage of clever projection technology. The automaker worked up a quick presentation for the 2013 911 Carrera 4S to show off a bit of "motionless driving." The display tracks the sports car from production to back-road caning and city-center cruising, displaying a variety of exterior color choices and wheel options without resorting to a two-dimensional video.

This isn't the first time we've seen an automaker use its new product as a projection screen. Subaru, Hyundai, Lamborghini and others have all done the same, and the trick never fails to be visually interesting.

As you may recall, we got to play with the 2013 911 Carrera 4S back in November and found the machine to be a better daily driver than its rear-wheel drive counterpart. You can check out the projection video below.
Continue reading Another cool projection vid, this time with a Porsche 911

Another cool projection vid, this time with a Porsche 911 originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 28 Dec 2012 17:02:00 EST.

After our many drives of the new 991-generation Porsche 911 Carrera over the past 18 months, we've felt at times that this more gran turismo-like 911 with its wider tracks and 3.9 inches of extra wheelbase would be particularly well suited to an all-wheel-drive setup. And so we went, over stunning and sunny autumn roads in Austria not far from the border with Slovenia where there was shockingly little traffic anywhere to be seen. It felt like the mountain roads had been set aside just for us and this latest 911 iteration, the Carrera 4S. Complain, we didn't.

With relatively little time to test the various Carrera 4 and 4S configurations when we arrived, we chose one from the bunch and stuck with it: a fairly loaded-to-the-max 394-horsepower 911 Carrera 4S Cabriolet in Racing Yellow with a black soft top, blackened 20-inch Carrera S wheels and optional seven-speed PDK transmission. Base price with destination charge for a Carrera 4S cabrio will start at $118,480 when it arrives in the US near April 2013. As tested, however, ours ran to $160,665, or what you might legitimately call a trunk full of dough. If you want a C4 or C4S 911 for something approaching just a duffle bag of dough, the coupes arrive earlier, near the start of 2013 soon after the Detroit Auto Show, priced at $91,980 for the 345-hp Carrera 4 hardtop and the 4S version starting at $106,580.

Be it 4 or 4S, with the cabrio we're talking about a very rich person's 2+1 ragtop - two humans are not fitting back there, sorry. The money spent has become less and less the issue because such cars as these are all now priced in the stratosphere. Enough people worldwide can afford them to the point where Porsche has no worries selling them. And with the 911 lineup now accounting for around 20 percent of total Porsche sales - and a Carrera 4S cabriolet being just a small slice of that slice - there are even fewer things to worry about. Let's get on with it then. One added note: Racy yellow would be a tough choice if we were purchasing.

2013 Porsche 911 Carrera 4S originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 02 Nov 2012 11:57:00 EST.
Now that the rear-wheel drive Porsche 911 has clapped its thunder, it's time for the 991-generation all-wheel drive Carrera 4 and Carrera 4S to roll forth in coupe and cabriolet forms. The meat of the transformation is the Porsche Traction Management system, and it's as much as 143 pounds lighter than the previous 997 C4S, despite being about 1.7 inches wider in back with rear tires that are a third of an inch broader. Detail changes include the cross-light connecting the taillamps moving up a bit and going what appears to be all LED illumination.

The new model has also brought less obvious benefits like better gas mileage than its predecessor, even with more power and speed. The 400-horsepower C4S Coupe, the quickest of the bunch, can dash from zero to 62 mph in 4.1 seconds, max out a whisper beyond 185 mph and return almost 26 mpg combined if fitted with the optional seven-speed PDK dual clutch gearbox (the seven-speed manual comes standard).

Ushering in new tech that will become available for the entire 911 range, the C4S receives adaptive cruise control, a sliding glass sunroof and, on manual-equipped cars with the Sport Chrono pack, automatic double-declutching during downshifts in Sport Plus mode.

We'll see them on the Porsche stand at next month's Paris Motor Show and they'll go on sale in Germany later this year, finally arriving in U.S. showrooms next February. Not including $950 for destination, it will take take $91,030 to get in the all-wheel-drive 911 C4 Coupe. The C4 Cabriolet breaks the six-figure barrier at $102,930, trumped by the C4S Coupe at $105,630 and the C4S Cabriolet another high-jump away at $117,530.
