Episode #332 of the Autoblog Podcast is here, and this week, Dan Roth and Zach Bowman talk about the Jaguar F-Type Coupe, the simultaneous market share gains by domestic automakers for the first quarter of 2013, and Volvo taking aim at the Volkswagen Golf. Our conversation about the Malaise Era's 40th anniversary with Rob Sass of Hagerty Classic Cars magazine had to be postponed, but look for it soon! We also address lots of your questions and comments, and for those of you who hung with us live on our UStream channel, thanks for taking the time. You can follow along after the jump with our Q&A. Thanks for listening!
Manufacturers have long held that smaller, turbocharged engines pack all power of their larger displacement cousins with significantly better fuel economy, but the research organization says that despite scoring high EPA economy numbers, the engines are no better than conventional drivetrains in both categories. Jake Fisher, director of automotive testing for Consumer Reports, says the forced induction options "are often slower and less fuel efficient than larger four and six-cylinder engines."

Specifically, CR calls out the new Ford Fusion equipped with the automaker's Ecoboost 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine. The institute's researchers found the engine, which is a $795 option over the base 2.5-liter four-cylinder, fails to match competitors in acceleration and served up 25 miles per gallon in testing, putting the sedan dead last among other midsize options.

The Chevrolet Cruze, Hyundai Sonata Turbo and Ford Escape 2.0T all got dinged for the same troubles, though Consumer Reports has found the turbo 2.0-liter four-cylinder in the BMW 328i does deliver on its promises. You can check out the full press release below.
If the Super Bowl were Las Vegas, Hyundai would be considered one of its whales. The South Korean automaker will be advertising for the sixth straight year during The Big Game, and this time it's rolling up with five spots, four of them new. The new 2013 Santa Fe gets the star treatment, featuring in three of the spots, but the theme throughout is using "a Hyundai vehicle as the ultimate sidekick and partner-in-fun."

The four brand new commercials are:

Epic PlayDate - the headliner, uses the Santa Fe for "an unforgettable and epic play date" and features a brand new song from "a legendary alternative rock band."

Team - a 30-second homage to action movies in which a young boy gathers a team to tackle the neighborhood bullies

Stuck - a 30-second ad that travels with newlyweds on a road trip in a Sonata, getting stuck behind rolling obstacles

Excited - a 30-second spot with NFL commentator Gus Johnson doing a play-by-play on the Genesis R-Spec tacking a track

The fifth spot, which has already aired, is called "Don't Tell" and you'll find it along with a press release below.
Continue reading Hyundai details its five Super Bowl ads, Santa Fe is MVP [w/video]

Hyundai details its five Super Bowl ads, Santa Fe is MVP [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 24 Jan 2013 18:00:00 EST.
Bid farewell to the Hyundai Sonata equipped with a manual transmission. The Korean manufacturer has discontinued the third-pedal in its midsize sedan for 2013, though buyers can look forward to more standard equipment on next year's model. With such a small take rate, Hyundai saw no reason to continue offering the six-speed manual in the base GLS model. That means the six-speed automatic transmission is now standard across the line, though the four-door will see an uptick in price as a result. The 2013 Sonata now starts at $21,670, including a $775 destination fee.

Consumers can expect to find the same direct-injection 2.4-liter four-cylinder under the hood as well as an optional turbocharged direct-injection 2.0-liter four. Heated seats are now standard in every trim with the exception of the entry GLS model. The Limited trim bows at $26,620 with the 2.4-liter, which marks a $600 price drop compared to 2012. The impressive, standard panoramic sunroof is now optional, however. If you want the extra glass, you'll now have to step up to a $2,900 Limited Premium Package. Scroll down for the full press blast.
Continue reading 2013 Hyundai Sonata gets $1,100 price increase, drops manual option

2013 Hyundai Sonata gets $1,100 price increase, drops manual option originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 09 May 2012 13:01:00 EST.
