This may sound strange, but bear with us - there is indeed a point to this little exercise. Okay, ready? We'd like you to close your eyes and imagine a crossover. Any modern crossover is fine.

Done? Good. Recall what you saw in your mind's eye. What did it look like? Did it have a somewhat aggressive shape - an upright greenhouse, pronounced wheel wells with some type of body cladding, a bold grille up front bracketed by large headlamps and hulking bodysides with a bit of visual flair provided by creases or rising shoulder lines? Did it sit jacked up a tad on oversized alloy wheels, distancing itself from any thoughts of mere station wagons? Yep, that was a crossover all right.

Point being, there isn't all that much to differentiate today's crop of car-based utility vehicles, at least when it comes to visuals and overall impressions, which means, to use a somewhat tired phrase, the devil is in the details. Clearly, what makes a family choose one over another has a lot to do with their individual wants and needs, and each automaker is building a vehicle (or two, or three) designed to appeal to these masses, but with ever-so-slightly differing formulas.

It was with all these thoughts swirling through our minds that we accepted an invitation to drive the new three-row 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe in San Diego, California for a full day of highways, twisty roads and ocean breezes. We were rewarded mostly with confirmation of our preconceived notions, but also with a few genuinely surprising details designed to attract the eyes and wallets of buyers all across North America.
Continue reading 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe

2013 Hyundai Santa Fe originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 18 Mar 2013 11:57:00 EST.
Each extra inch in the wheelbase of the six- and seven-passenger 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe, compared to the five-seat Santa Fe Sport, will cost you $1,000. The larger version of Hyundai's new people carrier is 3.9 inches longer, and whereas the Santa Fe Sport was priced at $24,450, the roomier Santa Fe comes in four flavors that start at $28,350 for the front-wheel drive GLS version. Adding all-wheel drive to the GLS tacks on another $1,750, stepping up to the front-wheel Limited takes you to $33,100, the all-wheel drive Limited topping things out at $34,850. For the true price, you'll need to add *$845 to those prices for freight.

The base price is the same as Hyundai's previous seven-seater option, the Veracruz, slapped on a vehicle with much better looks and more features. Compared to the Santa Fe Sport, the six- and seven-passenger option has 8.5 extra inches in overall length, 1.9 extra inches of second-row legroom and that third row of seating in its hind quarters. The second row can be had as a traditional bench or captain's chairs on the Limited. Under the hood is the same 3.3-liter direct-injection V6 with 290 horsepower and 252 pound-feet of torque, mated to a six-speed Shiftronic transmission, and the same EPA estimated 25 highway miles per gallon for the FWD version.

You also get extra standard amenities like a 115-volt socket, power liftgate and rear-seat climate controls. Check out the press release below to find out all about them.
Continue reading Hyundai prices three-row Santa Fe from $28,350*

Hyundai prices three-row Santa Fe from $28,350* originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 01 Feb 2013 14:16:00 EST.
If the Super Bowl were Las Vegas, Hyundai would be considered one of its whales. The South Korean automaker will be advertising for the sixth straight year during The Big Game, and this time it's rolling up with five spots, four of them new. The new 2013 Santa Fe gets the star treatment, featuring in three of the spots, but the theme throughout is using "a Hyundai vehicle as the ultimate sidekick and partner-in-fun."

The four brand new commercials are:

Epic PlayDate - the headliner, uses the Santa Fe for "an unforgettable and epic play date" and features a brand new song from "a legendary alternative rock band."

Team - a 30-second homage to action movies in which a young boy gathers a team to tackle the neighborhood bullies

Stuck - a 30-second ad that travels with newlyweds on a road trip in a Sonata, getting stuck behind rolling obstacles

Excited - a 30-second spot with NFL commentator Gus Johnson doing a play-by-play on the Genesis R-Spec tacking a track

The fifth spot, which has already aired, is called "Don't Tell" and you'll find it along with a press release below.
Continue reading Hyundai details its five Super Bowl ads, Santa Fe is MVP [w/video]

Hyundai details its five Super Bowl ads, Santa Fe is MVP [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 24 Jan 2013 18:00:00 EST.
Hyundai has unveiled the production version of its six- and seven-passenger Santa Fe at the 2012 LA Auto Show. The new creation will be sold alongside the five-passenger Santa Fe Sport and offers buyers a 3.3-liter direct-injection V6 with 290 horsepower and 252 pound-feet of torque. Coupled to a six speed automatic transmission, the driveline delivers a 5,000-pound tow rating, and an optional all-wheel-drive system should provide a little extra traction for drivers in snowy climes.

With an extra 3.9 inches of wheelbase over the Santa Fe Sport, the new seven-passenger CUV delivers two inches more leg room in the second row as well as a functional third row of seating. Total cargo volume also swells from 71.5 cubic feet behind the front seats in the Santa Fe Sport to 80.0 cubes in the larger variant. The seven-passenger Santa Fe also serves up 13.5 cubic feet of cargo area behind its third-row seat.

Hyundai estimates the 2013 Santa Fe will deliver 18 mpg city and 25 mpg highway in front-wheel-drive configuration, while adding all-wheel-drive to the mix will drop those figures by 1 mpg highway. You can check out the full press release below for more information.
Continue reading Hyundai rolls out promised three-row Santa Fe for LA

Hyundai rolls out promised three-row Santa Fe for LA originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 28 Nov 2012 12:30:00 EST.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has named four more vehicles to its coveted Top Safety Pick list, which has grown to include 131 models. This time around, the 2013 Dodge Dart, Lexus ES, Hyundai Santa Fe and Subaru XV Crosstrek achieved top marks for crash safety in all applicable criteria tests. The IIHS has yet to start any large-scale tests of its new small overlap front crash test, so none of these models were subjected to this new category.

Proving how safe small cars now are, the Dart is one of 31 compact cars to grab a spot as a Top Safety Pick, being joined by XV Crosstrek. This is definitely good news for Subaru as, aside from the old-bodied Impreza WRX, its lineup of new products is on this list of safe vehicles.

While the new Santa Fe was named as a Top Safety Pick, it was actually the smaller Santa Fe Sport that was crash tested by Hyundai rather than the three-row model that now wears this name. Finally, both the hybrid (ES 300h) and non-hybrid versions of the new Lexus ES made the cut even though it is listed solely as the ES 350.
Continue reading Dodge Dart and three others latest to earn IIHS Top Safety Pick

Dodge Dart and three others latest to earn IIHS Top Safety Pick originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 04 Oct 2012 09:29:00 EST.
We're not sure we've ever come across a vehicle capable of turning street-loads of women breathless and sweaty, and we've driven the 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe. Even so, a new European ad for the five-door crossover seems to convey that's exactly what will happen when the fairer sex lays eyes on the machine. How's that for truth in advertising?

Amsterdam-based ad house Fitzroy whipped up the 45-second spot, titled "Upskirt" to show off the newly designed Santa Fe. With plenty of blowing garments and sultry actresses, there's no missing the ad's sensuality. We just can't quite wrap our minds around how it all fits with a Korean family hauler.

You can take a peek at the clip for yourself below, just be warned that the spot may be Not Safe For Work depending on the severity of the totalitarian regime under which you toil.
Continue reading 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe gets shockingly sexy ad from Amsterdam

2013 Hyundai Santa Fe gets shockingly sexy ad from Amsterdam originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 01 Oct 2012 19:01:00 EST. Hyundai has released pricing information for its new five-passenger 2013 Santa Fe Sport, and those the least-expensive way to get your hands on one will cost you $24,450 - but don't forget to add in $825 for destination to any Santa Fe model. For those keeping track, the 2012 Santa Fe starts at $23,225.

Opting for all-wheel drive will bring the sticker to $26,200 if you're willing to stick with the base 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine offering 190 horsepower and 181 pound-feet of torque. Check the box for the 2.0-liter turbo mill and you'll be met with a $27,700 sticker with front-wheel drive or $29,450 with AWD.

Want to pimp your ride with a leather interior with power seats (heated in the front and rear), rear-view camera, navigation screen with eight-inch screen and a panoramic sunroof? Be prepared to add $6,600 to the price of whichever model you've got your heart set on. That means a fully loaded Santa Fe with the turbocharged engine and all-wheel drive will go for over $36,000.

We're still waiting for pricing details on the seven-passenger version of the Santa Fe, but we assume it will run a bit higher than this five-passenger Sport model.
Hyundai prices 2013 Santa Fe Sport from $24,450 originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 06 Aug 2012 19:00:00 EST.
Hyundai North America CEO John Krafcik recently told Automobile magazine that it's popular "fluidic sculpture" design language won't stand still as it evolves with Hyundai's lineup in the coming years.

"You'll see even more maturity with the new Santa Fe, and future cars will feature something we're internally calling Fluidic Precision, where the forms might be a little less extroverted," Krafcik said. "You'll see that with the next Sonata, the design of which has just been frozen."

Krafcik also confirmed that Hyundai will introduce an all-wheel-drive version of the Genesis sedan in its next iteration, which will likely be shown as a concept vehicle later this year. Furthermore, Hyundai is considering upgrading the Genesis coupe to take on the likes of the the BMW 3 Series.

And while most automakers decline to discuss future products, Krafcik pulled the Hyundai's curtain back just a little. We're more than likely going to see a premium crossover in Hyundai's future lineup, but not likely to see a convertible, minivan or pickup truck.
Hyundai working on "Fluidic Precision" design for next Sonata originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 20 Jul 2012 16:01:00 EST.
Commercials are a great way to learn about culture; since a seller has maybe 30 seconds to get something across, you see what people think is the most important thing to convey and the best way to convey it.

Having said that, we have no clue what's going on with some of the South Korean ads for the 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe. In a couple of them, a genteel pair - we'll call them Run CUV and Jam Master Hyundai - lays down some mad lyrics, presumably about the Santa Fe. When they're not rapping, they're set in short episodic dramas to demonstrate the crossover's features. We're not sure if the pair are famous in Korea and frankly, we have no idea what they're talking about, but they look fun while they're doing it.

Hyundai Motor America CEO John Krafcik confirmed Wednesday that the all-new seven passenger 2013 Santa Fe will replace the Veracruz model. "The Veracruz is going away," Krafcik told Autoblog. "It ends production around November." Hyundai debuted the Santa Fe Wednesday at the New York International Auto Show in both five-passenger and seven-passenger configurations.

The seven-passenger Veracruz was a new nameplate for Hyundai when it rolled out in 2007. It never gained much acceptance in the U.S., so Hyundai has found a new way around that problem.

"It's hard to establish a new brand name," Krafcik said. "It can take $50 to $100 million dollars. Santa Fe is a golden nameplate for us, it's a great product, and now it will be much more efficient in my marketing spend."

Indeed. It will also be more efficient producing a five- and seven-passenger Santa Fe than two different vehicles. From the B-pillar forward, there will only be minor differences between the two Santa Fe models.

Furthermore, the new design of the Santa Fe moves it into Hyundai's stylized fluidic design theme, something that has been very successful with the compact Elantra and midsize Sonata. The Veracruz, which still included many of Hyundai's older design elements, just didn't fit in with everything else. Now, or at least in the coming months, it will be no more.
Hyundai Veracruz to end production "around November," replaced by Santa Fe originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 04 Apr 2012 19:31:00 EST.
You might think that Hyundai has pulled a fast one at today's New York Auto Show by unveiling two different of its 2013 Santa Fe, one a two-row Sport model and the other a three-row family-minded model simply called Santa Fe. In reality, however, we've been expecting this since we first told you about the Korean automaker's new strategy back in mid-2010.

The Santa Fe Sport seen above will offer buyers seating for five as well as two four-cylinder options. The base model comes equipped with a direct-injection 2.4-liter four-pot good for 190 horsepower and 181 pound-feet of torque, while a turbo 2.0-liter four-cylinder good for an estimated 264 ponies will also be offered. Both will be offered paired to a six-speed automatic transmission, and either engine can be had with all-wheel drive. The latter comes with torque-vectoring cornering control, a bit of tech that Hyundai hopes will set the Santa Fe Sport apart from other affordable crossovers. More impressively, the automaker says it has managed to clip a whopping 266 pounds from the Santa Fe compared to the 2012 model.

Buyers who need a bit extra space may want to step up to the seven-passenger Santa Fe. The three-row model adds around four inches of additional wheelbase and a more powerful 3.3-liter direct-injection V6 with 290 horsepower. The additional inches allow for around 38.6 additional cubic feet of passenger volume compared to the Santa Fe Sport, and the long-wheelbase model should fill in for the ill-embraced Veracruz which is likely in its last model year. Hit the jump for the complete press release.
Continue reading 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe goes on big diet, unveils five and seven-passenger models

2013 Hyundai Santa Fe goes on big diet, unveils five and seven-passenger models originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 04 Apr 2012 14:25:00 EST.
In a lineup packed with new and/or freshly styled vehicles, Hyundai's two larger crossovers, the Santa Fe and its all-but-forgotten three-row counterpart, the Veracruz, still wear the automaker's last-generation styling language. That will be addressed (in part, at least) at next month's New York Auto Show when Hyundai unveils the 2013 Santa Fe.

To get people talking, Hyundai published two renderings of its new CUV this evening via its Twitter feed. Predictably, the 2013 Santa Fe gets sharper lines that are much more in keeping with the rest of the model lineup, and the new face validates a spy photo that hit the web back in January.

Hyundai calls the crossover's fresh styling language "Storm Edge," saying it's an evolution of the "Fluidic Sculpture" theme it's been using the last few years.

Based on the the profile shot, which shows a very small window aft of the rear doors, it appears that the Santa Fe will, for the time being, continue to be a two-row crossover (its optional third row was canned after the 2009 model year) that's designed to battle the likes of the Nissan Murano, Ford Edge, and Toyota Venza.

Whether Hyundai will also use the occasion to formally confirm the rumored long-wheelbase, three-row variant to replace the Veracruz remains to be seen. It's clear the automaker knows that it's hurting in that department.
Continue reading 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe previewed on Twitter ahead of NY reveal

2013 Hyundai Santa Fe previewed on Twitter ahead of NY reveal originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 10 Mar 2012 21:25:00 EST.
It won't be long before we see the official reveal of the 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe, but predictably, the Internet won't be kept waiting. Consider us unsurprised that a set of grainy photos showing what is claimed to be a badgeless redesigned Santa Fe crossover has appeared ahead of schedule.

That said, we're thinking the chrome-heavy maw depicted in these shots suggests that this is probably an overseas version (ix45) - not exactly what we'll see in the States. At least, that's what we're hoping, as the wall of frontal brightwork seems out of step not just with the market, but also Hyundai and its styling position here in North America. That said, our moles confirm that this is "some version of Santa Fe" and suggest that the image above was likely part of an illicit photo shoot taken inside the plant in Korea.

We should know more in April, when the North American Santa Fe is expected to launch at the New York Auto Show. For now, however, check out AutoEvolution for a second look.
Are you the 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe? originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 26 Jan 2012 14:00:00 EST.
Motor Trend reports Hyundai has confirmed that its next-generation Santa Fe will bow at the 2012 New York Auto Show. The third-generation Santa Fe is expected to hit dealer lots by the end of the year as a 2013 model. Hyundai hasn't disclosed exactly what we can expect from the vehicle when it arrives, though spy shots suggest a vehicle more in-line with the automaker's current design language. MT believes the 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe will continue on with the same powertrain options found in the current vehicle, which means buyers can look forward to a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine or a 3.5-liter V6 mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.

Hyundai may squeeze a bit more performance or fuel efficiency out of those engines, however. Some reports have also suggested the 2013 Santa Fe may bow with a new turbocharged four-cylinder under the hood as well. That engine is currently found in the likes of the Hyundai Sonata 2.0T where it produces 274 horsepower and 269 pound-feet of torque.

Finally, our intelligence still suggests that Hyundai will eventually market a stretched three-row variant of the Santa Fe as the de-facto replacement for the slow-selling Veracruz, but it isn't clear whether that vehicle (or strategy) will be disclosed in New York.
Next-Gen Hyundai Santa Fe will debut in Big Apple originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 12 Jan 2012 11:01:00 EST.
