You can count on the fact that there will be plenty of tributes to the late <a href="http://autoblog.com/tag/carroll shelby/">Carroll Shelby</a> over the next several months and years - most of them taking the vehicular shape of the <a href="http://autoblog.com/ford/mustang/">Ford Mustang</a>, we'd wager. The one you see above was created by a group called Friends of Carroll and was unveiled by Edsel Ford II, <a href="http://autoblog.com/ford/">Ford</a> marketing VP <a href="http://autoblog.com/tag/jim farley/">Jim Farley</a> and <a href="http://autoblog.com/tag/shelby/">Shelby</a> American President John Luft at the <a href="http://autoblog.com/tag/montery motorsports reunion/">2012 Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion</a>.<br />
<br />
The 2013 GT500's stock 662-horsepower 5.8-liter V8 engine has seen its power bumped to an even 850 horses with upgrades provided by Ford Racing. A widebody kit from Shelby covers up the 13-inch-wide rear wheels and 345-series tires. The car is painted in Guardsman Blue with Wimbledon White stripes - a classic color combination seen on many Cobra roadsters from the 1960s.<br />

<a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/shelby/">Shelby American</a> has made its name tuning various <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/">Ford</a> products, and now the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/focus+st/">Focus ST</a> can be added to this list. Just introduced at the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/detroit-auto-show/">Detroit Auto Show</a>, the Shelby Focus ST doesn't add any extra horsepower under the hood, but it should still make sizable gains in performance thanks to an upgraded suspension, brakes and exhaust systems. Also on hand at the Shelby display was a widebody version of the powerful <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/shelby+super+snake/">Shelby GT500 Super Snake</a>.<br />
<br />
Starting with the already-quick Focus ST, Shelby adds <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/ford+racing/">Ford Racing</a> suspension components and bigger brakes with cross-drilled rotors, all finished off with a Borla exhaust system incorporating larger, circular outlets. Cheesy body graphics aside, some of the styling enhancements include functional hood vents, a hatch spoiler, unique interior bits and wider wheels and tires. Shelby does mention a tuning option that will increase the engine's 252-horsepower output to more than 300, although no pricing is mentioned. Speaking of price, Shelby says this souped-up hot hatch will carry a "budget minded price" (<em>*ahem*</em>). What is that you ask? Well, after you buy a 2013 Focus ST from your local Ford dealer (base price: $23,700), the Shelby upgrades will cost an extra $14,995. Production of these cars will be limited to just 500 units.<br />

As for the Super Snake, Shelby is giving the car a wider optional body kit to accommodate the 10-inch front and 13-inch rear wheels. Customer can choose just the wider units at the rear or at all four corners. As you're surely aware by now, the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/shelby+gt500/">2013 Ford Shelby GT500</a> boasts a 5.8-liter beast of an engine making 662 horsepower, partnered in crime by 631 pound-feet of torque.<br />
<br />
There seems little to gain in rehashing what we already know - namely, that the 2013 GT500 is fast. Stupid, stinking, earth-shatteringly fast. Ignorantly fast, even. This much is a given. Anybody who can read a spec sheet knows that the GT500 can set ablaze a straight-line drag race and will be even more ludicrous with its snake-encrusted nose pointed toward an unlimited runway. This Mustang will gallop to two 202 miles per hour in fact, which is pure insanity.<br />
<br />
But why? What's the point? To put it another way, what do you do with a two-door coupe straining to keep that supertanker-size engine firmly attached to its motor mounts while the traction control tries (and fails miserably) to keep its rear tires planted? When the keys to the 2013 Shelby GT500 were handed to us, we figured we'd have exactly one week to find out why anyone would want to buy one, beyond the obvious, of course.<br />

The <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/shelby+gt500/">2013 Ford Shelby Mustang GT500</a> is an impressive piece of hardware right out of the box. It's a package capable of pulling 11-second quarter mile passes one minute and lapping your favorite road course with genuine fury the next thanks to its impressive suspension tuning and heady 662-horsepower. But how much quicker can its supercharged V8 get with a little tweaking? The guys from Lethal Performance recently set out to find the answer. The team isn't saying exactly what they've done to the king Pony, though we can see a set of dragstrip-friendly "bigs n' littles" have found their way into the wheel wells.<br />
<br />
As a result, the 3,852-pound two-door bolted down the drag strip in just 9.77 seconds. Judging by the "thank you" list in the video's credits, this GT500 may even be rocking a shot of nitrous, though we can't say for certain. International man of mystery <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/chris harris">Chris Harris</a> recently abandoned his duties in the UK for a trip to the States. Why? Because of two very important pieces of machinery: the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/chevrolet/camaro zl1">2013 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1</a> and the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/shelby gt500">2013 Ford Shelby GT500</a>. Harris took charge of both cars in Manhattan to evaluate their on-road manners before heading to the track for a little showdown. What did he find? On the street, the Camaro is actually easier to live with than its Ford rival thanks to a more comfortable seating position, friendly clutch and easy torque curve.<br />

And on the track? The ZL1 took top honors there, as well, beating the GT500 around <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/monticello/">Monticello</a> by a full two seconds even though it has less power. We're guessing this footage was recorded a little while back, before the final certified rating of the 5.8-liter supercharged engine in the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/shelby+gt500/">2013 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500</a> came in at 662 horsepower and 631 pound-feet of torque.<br />

Indeed, there isn't a single car anywhere near the sticker price of the 2013 GT500 - not even the stupid-fast <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/chevrolet/zr1/">Chevy Corvette ZR1</a> - that offers as many horses under the hood as the most powerful production <a href="http://autoblog.com/ford/mustang">Mustang</a> in history. Suffice it to say, reeling in 662 galloping ponies and sending them to the rear tires isn't an easy conundrum to solve.<br />

And that's where launch control comes into play. It's a cool system, allowing the driver to alter the RPM held by the engine with the clutch depressed. Drop the clutch and, instead of watching your Goodyear F1 Supercar tires go the way of the Dodo, you hook up and take off down the drag strip.<br />

With 82 more horsepower (rated) and a couple hundred pounds less weight to move, the 'Stang out to outrun the range-topping <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/chevrolet/camaro+zl1/">2012 Camaro ZL1</a> in straight-line performance testing.<br />

There's a reason the speedometer on the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/shelby gt500">2013 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500</a> reaches all the way to 220 mph. By all accounts, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford">Ford</a> poured a substantial amount of development resources into the supercharged creation by running it through the ringer at some of the world's most hallowed courses. Those include the infamous <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/nurburgring">N&uuml;rburgring</a> and Italy's massive <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/nardo/">Nardo Ring</a>. The automaker has finally released a video detailing some of that work, specifically on the Shelby GT500's high-speed dynamics. In order for a production vehicle to safely operate at 200 mph, the machine needs to not only be able to achieve the speed, but also to maintain the velocity safely.<br />

It also needs to be able to stop at a moment's notice. As such, engineers ran the 642 horsepower sportscar up to V-max and proceeded to induce a full ABS stop. That must have been an interesting moment behind the wheel. The good old boys at <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/motor trend"><em>Motor Trend</em></a> got their hands on not only a <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/shelby gt500">2013 Ford Shelby GT500</a>, but a <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/ford police interceptor">Ford Police Interceptor</a> and a <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/dodge charger police pursuit">Dodge Charger Police Pursuit</a>, as well. Like any good, upstanding group of hooligans, the crew set to playing cops and robbers in the shadow of Detroit's vacant factories. With the big 662-horsepower, supercharged V8 Mustang left with no long spans of asphalt to stretch its legs, the two pursuit vehicles have a clear advantage. Watching the three go at each other is a decent way to blow five minutes of your work day.<br />
<br />
Of course, this reminds me of a pearl of wisdom served up by my grandfather on the subject of evading the long arm of the law. He always said, "You can out run one, you might even out run two, but you'll never outrun that radio." Amen.<br />

It looks like we weren't the only ones to get our hands on the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/shebly GT500">2013 Ford Shelby GT500</a>. <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/jamal hameedi">Jamal Hameedi</a>, SVT chief nameplate engineer, recently stopped by the Big Dog Garage to show off both the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/mustang+boss+302/">Mustang Boss 302</a> and the GT500. It's no secret that Leno has always been a <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/mustang">Mustang</a> fan, and with the ridiculously powerful supercharged 5.8-liter pumping out more grunt than the comedian's own <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/ford gt">Ford GT</a>, the 2013 Shelby has earned itself another proponent. Leno takes the big horse out for a ride around town, including over some of the more punishing stretches of Los Angeles freeway before heading home.<br />

Of course, it wouldn't be an episode of <em>Jay Leno's Garage</em> without a proper burnout, and the clip doesn't disappoint. <a href="/2012/05/21/jay-leno-gets-nostalgic-driving-shelby-gt500-and-boss-302/#continued">Looks like fun </a>to us. We would love to be able to look you square in the eye and say, "All you need to know about the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/shelby+gt500/">2013 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500</a> can be summed up in one figure: 662." After all, that's the obscene amount of horsepower ripping at the rear tires courtesy of the supercharged 5.8-liter V8 under the hood. Unfortunately, it's not quite that simple. For the first time in its life, the GT500 has found itself lined up against a legitimate competitor in the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/chevrolet/camaro+zl1/">Chevrolet Camaro ZL1</a>. The muscle car/supercar crossbreed from <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/general motors">General Motors</a> is stitched to conquer not only the quarter mile, but the nation's road courses as well.<br />
<br />
In order to answer that threat, the engineers at <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford">Ford</a> have laid a hand on nearly every mechanical and electrical system on board the GT500. While that means the blown V8 churns out a diabolical 112 more horsepower than the previous model, it also means the top-tier <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/mustang">Mustang</a> now comes with tricks like user-selectable <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/bilstein">Bilstein</a> dampers, adjustable electronic power steering, larger brakes and an array of optional cooling systems. In the high-stakes world of performance cars, horsepower is king. It's the first stat bragged about by owners trying to explain why their <a href="http://autoblog.com/chevrolet/camaro">Camaro</a>, <a href="http://autoblog.com/dodge/challenger">Challenger</a> or <a href="http://autoblog.com/ford/mustang">Mustang</a> is better than their foes', and it's the headline figure promoted by the automakers themselves year after year.<br />
<br />
When <a href="http://autoblog.com/ford">Ford</a> announced that the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/shelby+gt500/">2013 Shelby GT500</a> would be punishing the pavement with <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2011/11/15/2013-ford-shelby-gt500-delivers-650-hp-and-200-mph-straight-from/">650 horses</a>, the world stood up and took notice. Remember, though, these were just estimated figures, as the car had not yet been SAE certified. If reports from the Team Shelby message board prove accurate, the 2013 GT500 has finally gotten its official figures.<br />
<br />
How's about 662 horsepower and <strike>630</strike> 631 pound-feet of torque?<br />
<br />
Yep, that'll do. It's notable that these figures represent increases of 12 horsepower and <strike>30</strike> 21 lb-ft over the earlier estimates, and they also put even more distance between Ford's top-performing Mustang and Chevy's 580-horsepower <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/chevrolet/camaro+zl1/">Camaro ZL1</a>. It also means the Shelby lays down considerably more ponies that the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/chevrolet/zr1/">Corvette ZR1</a> and its 638 horsepower and 604 lb-ft.<br />
<br />
Now, will we see a corresponding horsepower-addled response from <a href="http://autoblog.com/chrysler">Chrysler</a> or <a href="http://autoblog.com/tag/gm">General Motors</a>? Only time will tell.<br />

<em><strong>*UPDATE: </strong>We've received an official press release from Ford quoting power figures of 662 horsepower and 631 pound-feet of torque, making the 2013 Ford Shelby GT500's engine the most powerful production V8 in the world. Those looking for some added sportiness inside the cabin can opt for a color-coordinated pair (black and blue in the case of our config) of front Recaro seats for an extra $1,595. Sounds like money well-spent.<br />

For those wishing to check every option available for the car, including a Shelby-branded car cover, the most-expensive 2013 Shelby GT500 hardtop will waltz off the factory floor with a $66,485 window sticker. On the other side of the equation, even a base $54,200 (*plus $795 for destination) car will come equipped with the supercharged 5.8-liter V8 capable of hurtling the GT500 to a terminal velocity of a bit over 200 miles per hour. It would seem on paper that the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/shelby+gt500/">2013 Ford Shelby Mustang GT500</a> should easily slay the heavier and less powerful <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/camaro%20zl1/">2012 Chevy Camaro ZL1</a>. The former weighs 3,850 pounds and brings 650 horsepower and 600 pound-feet of torque to the table, the latter carries 4,120 pounds and 580 hp/556 lb-ft.<br />

Not so fast, says Camaro Chief Engineer Al Oppenheiser (above). Speaking with Autoblog at an Arizona drive event for the Camaro ZL1, Oppenheiser told us, "We've done simulations. We predict that the ZL1 will be quicker to 60 than the [2013] GT500... We ran the N&uuml;rburgring and released a time. Ford took the GT500, too, and never released a time. I guess you can draw your own conclusions."<br />
<br />
When asked point-blank if he thought the ZL1 would be quicker around the 'Ring, Oppenheiser replied, "No question."<br />
<br />
Them sounds like fighting words, especially in the face of data that suggests the opposite is true. Remember, this is the same guy who <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2011/11/18/camaro-zl1-chief-engineer-says-youre-welcome-to-ford-mustang/">told Mustang fans "you're welcome"</a> for encouraging Ford to throw everything it can at the Camaro.<br />
<br />
But we're not counting Oppenheiser among the crazy just yet. All that power generated by the GT500's supercharged 5.8-liter V8 will be for naught if it can't reach the ground without turning into tire vapor, and let's not forget that the Blue Oval's bomber is still dragging around a solid rear axle, compared to the all-independent suspension sporting third-generation Magnetic Ride shocks on the ZL1. And who's doing the driving can always be the great equalizer when talking 'Ring times.<br />
<br />

At the <a href="http://autoblog.com/category/la-auto-show">2011 Los Angeles Auto Show</a>, <a href="http://autoblog.com/ford">Ford</a> officially put all other muscle cars - and even some supercars - on notice. The <a href="http://autoblog.com/ford/shelby+gt500">2013 Shelby GT500</a> made its public debut, and while it doesn't look much different than the models that came before it, the huge change for 2013 lies under the hood: an all-new 5.8-liter supercharged V8 capable of sending 650 horsepower to the coupe's rear wheels.<br />
<br />
Since the modern GT500's debut in 2007, Ford has always offered a convertible variant, and that isn't expected to change with this new 2013 model, especially since the rival <a href="http://autoblog.com/tag/camaro zl1">Camaro ZL1</a> will be offered in both hardtop and droptop forms. According to <a href="http://www.topspeed.com/cars/ford/2013-ford-mustang-shelby-gt500-convertible-ar122163.html">TopSpeed.com</a>, the GT500 Convertible will debut at the <a href="http://autoblog.com/category/detroit-auto-show">2012 Detroit Auto Show</a> in just a few weeks, packing the same 650-hp powertrain and - at least, we hope - some added chassis tweaks for structural rigidity. We can't even imagine trying to handle 650 supercharged horses through a willy-nilly rear end.<br />
<br />
The only thing that isn't expected to carry over from the coupe is the GT500's 200-plus-mile-per-hour top speed. It may be possible to achieve this with the soft top in place, but we think the 200 Club will exclusively be reserved for the coupe and its sleeker shape.<br />
<br />

We've got to admire the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2011/11/15/2013-ford-shelby-gt500-delivers-650-hp-and-200-mph-straight-from/">2013 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500</a>. The vehicle could very possibly be the least-aerodynamic sports car on the face off the planet that's capable of knocking off 200 mph. How does it do it? Lots and lots of power. <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford">Ford</a> completely reworked the vehicle's drivetrain for 2013, starting with the engine. The larger 5.8-liter aluminum V8 now spits out a full 650 horsepower and 600 pound-feet of torque courtesy of a larger supercharger. Ford calls the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/shelby+gt500/">2013 Shelby GT500</a> the most powerful production V8... in the world. The muscle-bound Mustang looks plenty impatient lounging on the show floor of the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/la auto show">2011 LA Auto Show</a>.<br />

The <a href="http://autoblog.com/model/mustang/">Mustang</a> has been an American icon for over 45 years, and now <a href="http://autoblog.com/make/ford/">Ford</a> is ready to unleash the most powerful lineup in this pony car's illustrious history. Since the Mustang is it's own kind of cool, Ford decided against unveiling it in front of the assembled crowds inside the Los Angeles convention center. Instead, the Blue Oval invited 800 of its closest friends to see the 2013 lineup at the Belasco Theater.<br />

Marketing boss Jim Farley took the stage to unveil the refreshed <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2011/11/15/2013-ford-mustang-and-boss-302-get-styling-packaging-updates/">Boss 302</a>, the 420-horsepower <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2011/11/15/2013-ford-mustang-and-boss-302-get-styling-packaging-updates/">GT </a>and the fresh-faced <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2011/11/15/2013-ford-mustang-and-boss-302-get-styling-packaging-updates/">V6 model</a>. Farley looked to the one and only Caroll Shelby to help unleash the 650-horsepower <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2011/11/15/2013-ford-shelby-gt500-delivers-650-hp-and-200-mph-straight-from/">Shelby GT500</a>, which looks pretty darn awesome in Grabber Blue. Shelby appeared to be especially gleeful about the latest GT500, adding that this latest GT500 is "the one." Six hundred and fifty horsepower. Six hundred pound-feet of torque. Over 200 miles per hour. With specs like these, you don't need long-form introductions. This is the <a href="http://autoblog.com/ford/shelby+gt500">2013 Ford Shelby GT500</a>, and all we can say is, the <a href="http://autoblog.com/tag/camaro+zl1">Chevrolet Camaro ZL1</a> has officially been put on notice.<br />

Nearly the entire powertrain has been upgraded for 2013, including a new cross-drilled block and heads, updated camshaft profiles, a carbon fiber driveshaft and upgraded clutch, transmission and axle. The cooling system has also been upgraded, and the new six-speed manual transmission now has a final drive ratio of 3.31-to-1 - optimized to handle the massive amounts of torque put down by the new engine.<br />

Further enhancements can be had in the GT500 Performance Pack, which incorporates SVT-designed Blistein electronic adjustable dampers with 'normal' and 'sport' modes and a Torsen limited-slip differential. What's more, the Track Package adds an external engine oil cooler, rear differential cooler and transmission cooler. Like the current GT500, 19-inch wheels are standard up front (20-inch rollers are found out back) and a Brembo braking system keeps everything in check when its time to control all that force. The whole package weighs in at just 3,850 pounds - 270 less than the Camaro ZL1 - and Ford says it will not be subject to the dreaded Gas Guzzler Tax.<br />

	Visually, not too much has changed from the current GT500, save some minor aerodynamic tweaks like an ever-so-slightly revised front fascia with new air splitters, as well as a minimally tweaked rear end. Inside, it's the same levels of comfort and refinement that you'll find in the rest of the Mustang lineup, albeit with new Recaro front buckets.<br />
