The sixth-generation NASCAR Sprint Cup racecar, which will make its competition debut at the 2013 Daytona 500 this weekend, marks the closest thing to a "stock car" that the sport has seen in more than 20 years. No longer using just stickers to distinguish the different brands, the image above shows the lengths NASCAR and automakers went in order to create a racecar design that more closely resembles the individual cars they represent.

Ford, one of the more open and vocal OEMs regarding the Gen6 car's development, is giving us a closer look at its racing version of the Fusion with a pretty revealing side-by-side comparison with last years' racer (click above for an expanded view). Aside from the more realistic front end and production-like body lines, the overall shape, dimensions and proportions have also been designed to give the racecar a more stock appearance. Most of the new racer was designed by the Ford Design Center, which the automaker says was the first time it has been so involved in the design process since the 1960s. Of course, one area the Sprint Cup Fusion really differs from the production Fusion is its Ford Racing 5.8-liter V8 producing around 850 hp. Can you say Fusion SVT?

As we told you about before, there were four episodes planned for the Ford Fusion GP campaign in Brazil, and the whole series has now run its course. The Ford ads pit Brazilian Formula One driver Nelson Piquet against English F1 pilot Nigel Mansell driving the new Fusion, the two coming together again after their partnership at the Williams F1 team ended in a miserable state more than 20 years ago.

They're lined up for you below, in reverse chronological order. You should watch number three first, though, as it adds a bit more spice to the NASCAR action in the fourth.
Continue reading Watch Piquet and Mansell bend some sheetmetal in Ford Fusion GP

Watch Piquet and Mansell bend some sheetmetal in Ford Fusion GP originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 12 Feb 2013 15:00:00 EST. Manufacturers have long held that smaller, turbocharged engines pack all power of their larger displacement cousins with significantly better fuel economy, but the research organization says that despite scoring high EPA economy numbers, the engines are no better than conventional drivetrains in both categories. Jake Fisher, director of automotive testing for Consumer Reports, says the forced induction options "are often slower and less fuel efficient than larger four and six-cylinder engines."

Specifically, CR calls out the new Ford Fusion equipped with the automaker's Ecoboost 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine. The institute's researchers found the engine, which is a $795 option over the base 2.5-liter four-cylinder, fails to match competitors in acceleration and served up 25 miles per gallon in testing, putting the sedan dead last among other midsize options.

The Chevrolet Cruze, Hyundai Sonata Turbo and Ford Escape 2.0T all got dinged for the same troubles, though Consumer Reports has found the turbo 2.0-liter four-cylinder in the BMW 328i does deliver on its promises.
Ford's Fusion and Fusion Hybrid have both received the highest five-star overall safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The rating is a big upgrade for the Fusion, which was completely redesigned for 2013. The previous model fell one star short of the top rating, after scoring only three stars in the frontal crash test and four stars in the side crash test and rollover evaluations. The 2013 Fusion received four stars in side crash and rollover testing and a full five stars in the front crash test.

Test results for the 2013 Fusion and Fusion Hybrid were greatly improved at least in part due to Ford's Personal Safety System. The system utilizes smarter sensors to gather crash data and tailor the car's restraint systems to the occupants. Seatbelt usage and seat position are taken into account to ensure airbags deploy with less pressure for smaller drivers, more for larger drivers.

The 2013 Fusion twins also received the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Top Safety Pick+ designation.
Waiting for a Ford compliment from Consumer Reports these days is like waiting for a low-cost new product from Apple. So we weren't really expecting a glowing review of the 2013 Ford Fusion when CR got its hands on the car. The institute's crew bought three different versions of the Fusion (Hybrid, 1.6-liter EcoBoost and a Titanium with the 2.0-liter EcoBoost) to put through its barrage of tests, and while we aren't too surprised by some of the findings, they're still interesting nonetheless.

CR praises the Fusion for its "eye-catching" design and says that the sportier Titanium trim level is the best-handling midsize sedan they've ever tested, but that's about where the good news ends for Ford. The Fusion Hybrid also posted the best-ever fuel economy CR has recorded in a midsize sedan, but the only problem is that their number was 39 miles per gallon combined - far less than Ford's 47 mpg rating for city, highway and combined. As expected, CR also dinged the Fusion for its MyFord Touch, but some of the other gripes about the car include a cramped cabin and poor fit and finish.

Other Ford products tested this time around include the Focus Electric and C-Max Hybrid. Like the Fusion, CR's observed fuel economy of 37 mpg for the C-Max fell well short of Ford's advertised 47-mpg rating, and both cars were criticized for the use of MyFord Touch. CR notes that the Focus Electric's interior is also cramped, with the battery pack taking up a lot of cargo space.

In other news, CR slams the Mitsubishi i-MiEV electric car rather mercilessly, something that is perhaps less surprising. The institute digs into the low-cost urban runabout for its lack of speed, payload, and chintzy finish, among other things.

Formula One World Champions Nelson Piquet and Nigel Mansell haven't been on good terms since the 1986 season, when Piquet joined Mansell at the Williams team and Piquet spent the year privately fuming about not being granted the status of number one driver. Things only got worse from there - even though Piquet won the title the following year with Williams, still partnered with Mansell, the fuming was a lot less private.

They're back together after a 25-year silence, in the city of Porto Alegre, Brazil to drive the new Ford Fusion. Called "Fusion Grand Prix," both men get the new Ford sedan, prepped to their liking - but still street legal, we assume - for a race to decide... well, who is faster behind the wheel of a Fusion.

There will be four episodes, with the first two having already aired. The third episode comes on January 29 and the race happens February 5. You'll find two video episodes and a press release below, but note - because it's a campaign for Ford Brazil, Piquet's dialogue in the vids isn't translated, so hit the Closed Captioning button to hear his side of the smack talking.
Continue reading Nelson Piquet and Nigel Mansell revisit bitter F1 rivalry in...
2012 is almost in the books and automakers are spending December gearing up for the 2013 auto show season, which tips off next month at the Detroit Auto Show. Traditionally, the latter opens up with the announcement of the North American Car and Truck/Utility of the Year awards, and this year figures to be no different.

But up until this moment, we didn't know which six vehicles would be parked ahead of the stage as finalists, with executives and engineers waiting for the winners to be disclosed. Whittled down from October's "short list" of nominees (11 cars and 10 truck/utility vehicles), the finalists are as follows:

2013 North American Car of the Year:

 Cadillac ATS

 Ford Fusion

 Honda Accord

2013 North American Truck/Utility of the Year:

 Ford C-Max

 Mazda CX-5

 Ram 1500

As determined by a non-profit, independent jury of 50 US and Canadian journalists(*), the pair of lists above arguably feature a surprise or two, and they open up some potentially interesting story lines. Will the Ford and Honda, which compete against each other in the marketplace, split votes among jurors who only want to vote for one family sedan? Did the Scion FR-S/Subaru BRZ twins miss making the finalists' list because they were listed as separate entries, or did they just not win over enough jurors? Until the voting patterns of the jurors are released (after the awards are announced), we won't really know if any of these scenarios played into the calculations.

What do you think of these six vehicles? Which would you vote for? Which do you think will win? Participate in our polls below by guessing which vehicles will win, then state your case for who should win in Comments.

Ford announced today that it has determined the problem and has worked up a fix for the engine fires that have resulted in recalls for 2013 Ford Escape and Fusion models equipped with the 1.6-liter EcoBoost engine. Ford says the fires are being caused by an issue with the cooling system software that fails to properly manage engine temperatures during "unique overheating conditions," which are allowing the engines to get hot enough to start a fire while running. This is the third link to engine fires with faulty fuel lines being the culprit back in July and leaking coolant in September.

To prevent the overheating, Ford will be updating the software for the cooling system, but until then, the automaker says that owners of affected vehicles should not drive their vehicles and contact the dealer to arrange alternative transportation. According to Automotive News, this means that 73,320 owners are still in rental cars costing Ford up to $55 per day. None of the other engines used in these vehicles are involved in the recall.
Ford is recalling a total of 19,106 2013 Fusion models for faulty headlights, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The car's low beam headlamp projector coating may not have cured correctly during manufacturing, which may cause haziness over time, dimming the lights. The resulting reduced visibility could cause a crash. Ford will notify affected Fusion owners, and dealers will replace the faulty lamp assemblies free of charge. Expect the recall campaign to begin on December 10.

This is the second recall of Ford's young Fusion in a week's time. Last Friday saw Ford calling in 15,833 of its new sedans equipped with 1.6-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engines. According to NHTSA, the engine could overheat and potentially cause a fire while running. You can take a look at the most recent recall notice below for more information.
Continue reading 2013 Ford Fusion gets second recall in a week, this time for faulty headlamps

2013 Ford Fusion gets second recall in a week, this time for faulty headlamps originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 07 Dec 2012 11:29:00 EST.
There are plenty of fans of Tupac Shakur who would have no idea that the rapper who sang "How Do You Want It" and "Str8 Ballin'" could also do a pretty good Langston Hughes with poems like "The Rose that Grew from Concrete." Someone at Ford did, though, and has used the poem from the late West Coast wordsmith to pitch the 2013 Fusion to wider audiences.

Ford not only calls the one-minute spot a "riveting message to the African American community," but says the poem is the "perfect description for the way the new Fusion's design came to be." You can let us know if you've been touched after watching the video below.
Continue reading All Eyez on Ford: Tupac Shakur poetry used to market Fusion

All Eyez on Ford: Tupac Shakur poetry used to market Fusion originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 04 Dec 2012 07:58:00 EST.
Ford has announced a recall of 89,153 vehicles equipped with 1.6-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engines over the possibility of overheating and, in some instances, fires starting in the engine compartment. The brand new 2013 Fusion accounts for 15,833 of the affected models, the other 73,320 being the 2013 Escape. This is the fourth time the recently launched Escape has been recalled, and this is the third time the recall has involved the 1.6-liter engine.

In a statement issued Friday, Ford confirmed that there have been new reports of these engines overheating, resulting in fires while the engine is running. No injuries have been reported in conjunction with this issue, and Ford states that the affected vehicles' instrument clusters may display warning notifications reading, "Engine Power Reduced to Lower Temps" or "Engine over temp, stop safely."

Ford is currently working on a repair procedure and will notify owners as soon as a fix is found. In the meantime, the automaker is urging owners to stop driving these affected vehicles and to contact a Ford dealer to arrange for alternate transportation at no charge. Owners in the United States may call 866.436.7332 for assistance with securing a different set of wheels (888.222.7814 in Canada).

Fusion and Escape models equipped with 2.5-liter naturally aspirated and 2.0-liter turbocharged engines are not affected by this recall. The Fusion Hybrid is also not affected.

Ford is getting pretty creative with ad spots for the new 2013 Ford Fusion. After seeing Ford make its rivals disappear, we now get to see it make the new Fusion fly. In a new television commercial called Cliff, the car is shown being driven off the side of a mountain and flying through the air. Instead of relying solely on CGI to make the car fly, Ford threw in some good old-fashioned stunt driving for added realism.

As in any stunt, this Fusion was modified for optimal safety and effect. All of the windows were replaced with Mylar, the airbags were removed and ballast was added to the trunk to give the car better balance for flying. For the jump itself, the car hit the five-foot ramp at 52 miles per hour, and it flew for 90 feet before crashing into 2,000 cardboard boxes. After all was said and done, it took two days to create the jump for the 30-second spot.

Scroll down to see how the commercial's stunt was performed and then check out the final product. We just wonder if the new Fusion will get a Dixie Horn option like the General Lee.
Continue reading Watch Ford jump its 2013 Fusion into a pile of cardboard boxes

Watch Ford jump its 2013 Fusion into a pile of cardboard boxes originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 14 Nov 2012 12:59:00 EST.
Last year, the Volkswagen Passat 2.5 SE won a Car and Driver comparison test of mid-size sedans, beating the Honda Accord V6 and Hyundai Sonata 2.0T. A couple of months later, the same Passat model won a mid-size comparo from Motor Trend against the Hyundai Sonata GLS and Toyota Camry LE. Earlier this year, the VW won an even larger C/D comparison test, beating the Chevrolet Malibu Eco, Accord EX-L, Sonata SE, Kia Optima EX and Camry SE.

That's a convincing string of victories, but they're all against the old hotness. So C/D put the Passat 2.5 SE against the freshest mid-sized competitors, the all-new-for-2013 versions of the Ford Fusion SE EcoBoost, Honda Accord EX and Nissan Altima 2.5 SV, and, well, you'll have to see if the German's enormous back seat and good chassis were enough to keep it on top. You can find out how they all ranked, and why, in the video below.
Continue reading Car and Driver "Masters of the Middle" comparo sizes up Passat, Fusion, Altima and Accord

Car and Driver "Masters of the Middle" comparo sizes up Passat, Fusion, Altima and Accord originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 12 Nov 2012 16:57:00 EST.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has crushed, mangled and smashed the 2013 Ford Fusion and gives it a coveted Top Safety Pick designation. That's the second Fusion generation in a row given the title.

IIHS said measures taken from its dummies in the driver and rear seat passenger positions "indicate low risk of any significant injuries" in the moderate overlap and side impact tests. The car's side airbags deployed front and back during both tests and dummy movement was "well controlled."

The Institute also gave the Fusion the top rating of Good in rollover and rear crash tests. The photo above shows the Fusion about to undergo IIHS's rollover evaluation in which a metal plate is pressed against one corner of the roof at a constant speed. "The maximum force sustained by the roof before 5 inches of crush is compared to the vehicle's weight to find the strength-to-weight ratio," according to the IIHS website.

The Fusion withstood 17,527 pounds before the roof crushed to the test's limit. That gave it a strength-to-weight ratio of 5.14. That compares well to the 2012 Honda Accord's 4.99, 2013 Subaru Legacy's 4.95 and previous-gen Fusion's at 4.78. The best ratio was claimed by the 2013 VW Passat at 6.32 and the worst by the 2010 Hyundai Sonata at 3.12 for which it got a marginal rating. You can see more IIHS roof strength evaluations here.
2013 Ford Fusion nabs IIHS Top Safety Pick originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 09 Nov 2012 11:30:00 EST.
Ford is unveiling three commercials this week that attempt to show how the new Fusion stands out from the crowd. The first one, called Disappearing, can be watched below.

"The competition is fierce in this segment, and it's important that we tried something different," said Amy Marentic, marketing manager for cars and crossovers for Ford. "We tried to use design and technology to stand out in a very crowded midsized market." Its commercials will also reflect something a little different, she said.

Prior to the new television campaign, Ford hired Chinese artist Liu Bolin, known as "The Invisible Man" for his ability to camouflage himself in plain sight in almost any situation. Bolin hand-painted cars parked along the side of a street, making the Fusion stand out as the only car visible in this series of clever print ads.

The second of three TV ads will show a Fusion driving off a cliff, demonstrating the one thing the new Fusion can't do. Chevrolet once tried showing a car flying through the air in an ad directed by Guy Ritchie that showed a young kid daydreaming that he was driving a Corvette that was airborne. It was pulled off the air after consumer groups complained.

"The overall message is, this car cannot do this," said Toby Barlow, advertising company Team Detroit's chief creative officer. "We hope common sense and reasonableness will take hold."

The third TV ad shows the new Fusion moving forward while other cars are going backwards. The ads will all air this week in prime time on the networks and during sporting events.
Continue reading Ford unveils first television ad for new Fusion

Ford unveils first television ad for new Fusion originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 05 Nov 2012 12:33:00 EST.
The 2013 Ford Fusion is a seriously pretty car, and every time we see one, we can't help but notice the styling influence from brands like Jaguar and Aston Martin. That said, the modified Fusions that Ford brought to this year's SEMA Show don't enhance the already attractive midsize sedan. In fact, to our eyes, it's quite the contrary.

Case in point: The Tjin Edition Fusion above. When we got our first glimpse at the beige show car in teaser form, it wasn't wearing these oversized wheels, and that ridiculous front lip wasn't in place. If we're honest, it just ain't pretty. That said, we certainly won't complain about the upgraded 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine found underhood or the MagnaFlow exhaust system out back.

Elsewhere on stage the 3DCarbon Fusion takes a rather pretty black-and-white color scheme and adds some visual aggressive flare (again with an oversized front lip), the MRT Performance car is a slammed-down black-and-blue brute, and the Ice Nine Group has incorporated a matte-and-green Monster paint job to the Blue Oval baby.

Beauty is indeed in the eye of the beholder, so have a scroll through our attached image gallery and let us know in the comments if any of these Fusions get your motor runnin'.
Sleek new Ford Fusion gets hit with SEMA's ugly stick originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 31 Oct 2012 17:00:00 EST.
Liu Bolin, the world-renowned Chinese artist famous for painting himself to camouflage into the background of an image, has teamed up with Ford for its latest advertisement for the 2013 Ford Fusion. The print ads aim to highlight how the styling of the new Fusion makes other midsize sedan "disappear." (The obvious joke here would be, "Does it really take this much work to make the Toyota Camry look invisible?"). The easy way out for the Blue Oval would've been to turn to computer programmers to work their magic, but instead, Ford opted to turn to the master illusionist.

Bolin worked with Ford to take Fusion rivals like the Volkswagen Passat, Camry and Honda Accord (and, for some reason, an Audi A4) and paint them to blend into various backgrounds right down to the landscaping, buildings and sidewalks. Ford has thoughtfully provided us with a time lapse video from a few different angles, but there's no telling how long each shot actually took to create in real time.

You'll probably start seeing these print ads showing up in magazines pretty soon, but you can see a making-of video below and then check out one of the campaign's first print ads below.
Continue reading Artist Liu Bolin helps Ford Fusion stand out by making rivals blend in

Artist Liu Bolin helps Ford Fusion stand out by making rivals blend in originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 25 Oct 2012 20:00:00 EST.
With the SEMA Show kicking off later this month, some automakers have already started showing off their Vegas-bound show cars, and now Ford is getting into the mix with a quartet of tricked-out 2013 Ford Fusion concepts. Ford will be unveiling "dozens" of cars at SEMA, but these custom Fusions give a glimpse of the tuning/styling potential of Ford's new midsize sedan.

While show cars at SEMA are generally flashy and over the top, the 2013 Fusion by Tjin Edition is a relatively subtle car. In the past, Tjin Edition Fords have also included the Explorer and Mustang GT, but the Tjin Edition Fusion has been upgraded with a custom paint job that actually makes beige look good to go with 21-inch wheels and new headlights and fog lights featuring LED accents. To give the car more performance, this Fusion also received an upgraded turbo on its 2.0-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder and a side-exit MagnaFlow exhaust system. Another restrained show car is the 3dCarbon - Air Design Fusion, which in all likelihood is the most realistic version with its lower body kit that augments the car's already sporty styling.
Looking to mimic the style of cars in the Australian V8 Supercar Series, the Ice Nine Group have the 2013 Fusion looking far better than next year's NASCAR Sprint Cup car decked out with a lowered stance, large rear wing and an eye-catching Monster Energy Drink paint job. The 2013 Fusion by MRT Performance also has an in-your-face appearance with its punishing black-and-blue paint scheme, but it, too, is modified for performance with an Eco-Flow exhaust system and enhanced chassis tuning.

Ford obviously thinks it was on to something good when it decided to offer its Lincoln MKZ sedan with a no-cost hybrid option, as the Blue Oval will now be taking a similar tack with its new Fusion Titanium. For $32,995, the range-topping 2013 Ford Fusion Titanium can be equipped with either the sporty 2.0-liter EcoBoost and all-wheel drive or hybrid power and front-wheel drive.

At launch, the 2013 Fusion Hybrid will only be available in mid-grade SE trim, but starting early next year, Ford will add a Titanium model that includes sportier exterior styling and a more premium cabin. This trim level will come standard with tech features like a 12-speaker Sony audio system, MyFord Touch, parking sensors and luxury items like power front seats, leather seats and 18-inch polished alloys. It isn't clear if the Fusion Hybrid Titanium's starting price includes the $795 destination charge [UPDATE: it does], but when optioning up a Fusion Hybrid SE with similar equipment, it's right in the same neighborhood at $33,370.

For those keeping track, the fully loaded Fusion Hybrid Titanium is just a step under the $35,925 2013 Lincoln MKZ Hybrid, with which it shares its chassis. Scroll down to see Ford's full presser on this new trim.
Continue reading Ford adds Titanium trim to 2013 Fusion Hybrid [UPDATE]

Ford adds Titanium trim to 2013 Fusion Hybrid [UPDATE] originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 02 Oct 2012 17:46:00 EST. With the redesigned Fusion receiving high praise, J Mays tells Automotive News that he feels vindicated from criticisms suggesting he's not a daring enough designer.

When Mays took over as lead of design in 1997, he admits to having quite an ego ("My head would barely fit through the door some days. I've long since gotten over myself") and the workload to match. With the Blue Oval's portfolio full of premium brands like Aston Martin, Jaguar, Land Rover and Volvo at that point, along with the bread-and-butter Ford, Lincoln and Mercury models, Mays certainly had quite the challenge.

It was in the mid-2000s that Mays took over just the premium brands, and took on the new title of Chief Creative Officer. At the time, Mays endured some criticism for looking backwards to retro styling, rather than setting a new standard for American car design - criticism that Mays says he is free from with the all-new Fusion.

It's also significant to point out the big names in car design came through the doors of Ford's design house under Mays. Names like Ian Callum (now of Jaguar), and Henrik Fisker, who was then at Aston Martin but has now gone on to start his own carmaker.

Mays, who spent time at BMW, Audi and Volkswagen told AN that American carmakers don't have to imitate Europe's luxury automakers to provide premium products (perhaps a bit ironic considering that even cheerleaders of the sedan admit the new Fusion has an awful lot of Aston Martin design language up front). While the Fusion has been well-received, Mays still has his hands full trying to maintain the "One Ford" global design language, matching that up with truck design, and finding an identity for Lincoln. All we can say is, it ain't easy being J Mays.
Ford's J Mays feels vindicated by Fusion reception originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 25 Sep 2012 16:30:00 EST.
