Though it's never going to post particularly impressive sales figures, the 2013 SRT Viper is, at least to us driving enthusiasts, the most important debut at the 2012 New York Auto Show. As such, it comes as little surprise that Chrysler has done its best to keep its new snake under cover ahead of its official debut.

Despite those efforts, here we have what appears to be photographs snapped during a video presentation showing the 2013 SRT Viper looking rather sinister in crimson. Based on previous spy shots, teasers, renderings and other random glimpses, these pics sure look like the real thing, and the reborn Viper looks just as venomous as ever.

There's plenty of inspiration drawn from the first and second generations of the Dodge Viper, especially the gorgeous Coupe model, but we also note a fair bit of European flair courtesy of the automaker's recent tie-up with Italy's Fiat. Some of the coupe's sinuous and feminine curves recall the Alfa Romeo 8C in particular.

You won't have to wait long for the 2013 Viper's official debut, as the New York Auto Show gets underway tomorrow. In the meantime, feel free to browse the image gallery above and let us know what you think of the new Viper in Comments.
2013 SRT Viper slithers out ahead of New York debut originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 03 Apr 2012 17:14:00 EST.
It's April 2 today, which means we've made it through all the April Fools' Day gags (stay tuned for more on that front...) and it's time to turn to more serious stuff. And nothing is more serious than the 2013 SRT Viper that debuts on April 4 at the New York Auto Show.

While we've seen teasers and spy shots, renderings and some other assorted approximations of what the first Viper without a Dodge badge will look like, we think this latest one really kills it. Courtesy of artist Jon Sibel, this is one of those images that looks good enough to be the real thing. If it were, we'd be pleased with the new Snake. We imagine everyone at Chrysler would too.

Besides this great rear three-quarter shot, Sibel has done up a nice Viper roadster that you can see in our gallery.
One more rendered speculation of the new Viper before the big reveal originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 02 Apr 2012 16:27:00 EST.
Chrysler will be showing the all-new 2013 SRT Viper at the New York Auto Show on Wednesday, in what will undoubtedly be one of the biggest reveals of the show. While we've already seen spy shots, teasers, renderings, Hot Wheels cars, and unfinished parts from the forthcoming Viper, this new teaser is our best official look yet.

Too bad then, that it's not so good - just a blurry, poorly lit image that seems like it's more Photoshop than photo. So we went ahead and tried to enhance the image we plucked off of SRT's Facebook page ourselves. If there's one thing we can see for certain from these pixels, it's that the new hood design - with two front-mounted, rear-facing scoops - is confirmed.

While we eagerly await the rest of the picture, the good news is that there's just two more days to go.

Check out all four official teasers of the new Viper in our gallery.
SRT drops one more official Viper teaser ahead of NY reveal originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 02 Apr 2012 11:27:00 EST.
Instead of letting everyone else leak shots and scale models of the 2013 Viper, SRT has gone insider trading and released its own teaser shot of the upcoming snake's interior. What we can see of the overall layout appears familiar from the second-generation car, but the materials look to have been significantly upgraded: ornately bezeled vents, soft-touch trim, cross-stitching and aggressive two-tone accents.

There's been some bother about the evolutionary exterior design of the 2013 Viper, but for a car that had just two generations in 20 years, it can still stand up to anything from Italy for badass presence. What it really needed was an interior and chassis that could deliver on its looks, and it appears the new 2013 model will be getting just that.

We'll continue to wait on its official appearance at the New York Auto Show next week to judge, but based on this shot, we like the look of where things are headed. Click on the photo above for a high-res version and stay tuned for the full debut live from New York next week.
SRT teases 2013 Viper interior on Facebook originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 30 Mar 2012 09:58:00 EST.
While we wait for the unveiling of the 2013 SRT Viper, the inevitable speculation over what it's going to look like continues. In broad terms, we already know what we're going to get in the third generation of Chrysler's flagship sports car. We've seen enough teases, blurry Hot Wheels photos and spy shots to know that the final product is going to look like, well, a Viper - long hood, wide stance, massive grille, big wheels.

Ah, but the details. The big questions concerning what's under the hood and performance specs and such won't truly be answered until Chrysler actually rolls out some real cars. But perhaps more importantly, we do have a good sense of the Viper's new face. Its triangular headlights and triple hood scoops look to raise the aggro level, and those features have been nicely illustrated by one of our readers.

Spen Oner created the rendering you see above, using that Hot Wheels image as its basis. As we noted in our original post about the Hot Wheels car, the wheels are a bit over-sized, and the angle of the shot only accentuates that. We also know that there will be something other than gaping black space in the grille area, as we've seen a stylized version of Dodge's crosshair grille in the shots of what we think are production molds for the hood and front end.

Thanks to Spen Oner and stay tuned for more news. We promise we'll do our best to make you sick of the Viper before it's even released!
Reader renders 2013 SRT Viper originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 24 Feb 2012 15:30:00 EST.
There seems to be an endless stream of spy shots scrolling across out digital desktops here at Autoblog, and some will invariably be more interesting than others. But few are as hotly anticipated as the new Viper that's coming roaring around the corner.

So far, all Chrysler has given us is a shadowy sketch, a close-up detail shot, and the new badge that will represent the model, joining the test mule spy shots we've been seeing for the past several months and the Hot Wheels leak we brought you yesterday. But this latest batch of spy shots appears the clearest yet - despite the best efforts of the SRT development team (including a Dukes of Hazzard-style hood slide that compelled KGP Photography to do a quick bit of wry image manipulation).

So what can we see from these pics? Ventilation, and lots of it. There is a pair of massive hood vents that pass air through the grille over the hood like you'd expect to see on a Le Mans race car. And through the mesh on Dolly Parton-size hood bra you can see a pair of uprights in the grille forming a V shape that's a slight departure from the crosshair grille of the previous Vipers. (Remember, this is technically an SRT product and - like the Ram trucks - no longer a Dodge.)

We're also seeing the clearest shots yet of the interior, with what looks like a full digital dashboard (complete with 220 mph speedo) instead of analog instruments. With each passing day, we hope to see a little more, but for now you can check out the full batch of spy shots in the gallery for a closer look.
2013 SRT Viper is starting to vent originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 23 Feb 2012 12:29:00 EST.
As is the way these days, Chrysler has begun an achingly slow striptease for the 2013 SRT Viper, with zoomed-in closeups and shadowy shots that are difficult to glean much from. But just as they did during your childhood, Hot Wheels may have a quicker way for you to get your hands on the Pentastar's super coupe. The hyper-pixelated image shown above appears to be the 2013 Viper wrought in diecast 1/43 scale. Reportedly from a poster showing the toymaker's 2012 line of vehicles, this could just be our best look at the big snake yet.

While the wheels appear to be exaggerated in typical Hot Wheels fashion, the greenhouse and the long hood all seem to fit what we would expect for a new Viper, including an aggressive hood that appears to have at least three vents. The gaping lower fascia and headlamps look to be new forms as well, and if we squint a little, the roof looks like it could be a double-bubble. If this image is correct, it would seem to be clear that Chrysler has not forgotten about the car's heritage. Will it be modern enough while retaining the Viper's stock-in-trade rawness? We hope to know more soon.
Are you the 2013 SRT Viper? originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 22 Feb 2012 21:44:00 EST.
SRT, the recently formed standalone brand of Chrysler, is determined to reveal the new 2013 Viper nice and slow. After releasing the first teaser image last month and offering a first look at the new 'Stryker' Viper logo, SRT has just posted a second teaser image of the 2013 Viper on their official Facebook page. While this second photo is much more clear than the first, what exactly is shown in the image is up to debate. Yes, it looks to be a carbon fiber scoop, but what kind?

While we may not know exactly what's in the second Viper teaser, here's what we do know about SRT's next gen flagship: Traction control will be used for the first time in the model's history as mandated by federal law, and while the 2013 Viper's powertrain is still unconfirmed, there are rumors that the V10 could get a bump in displacement to an incredible 8.7 liters.

We'll have all the details and photos when the 2013 SRT Viper is revealed during April's New York Auto Show. Until then we're sure that SRT will have more teasers, which we'll be sure to pass along. If you think you know what's being shown in this latest image then let us know in the comments section below.
SRT releases mysterious second teaser for next gen Viper originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 20 Feb 2012 22:27:00 EST.
Fans of <strike>Dodge's</strike> SRT's all-American supercar likely know that there have (so far) been two different logos used to depict the fanged Viper. The first, affectionately referred to as "Sneaky Pete," ran from 1992 until 2002. The second appeared in 2003, when the Viper got a major styling update, and was called "Fangs."

An all-new Viper is set to debut at the 2012 New York Auto Show, and it will do so with an equally fresh logo. We're not sure exactly when the Stryker design was first revealed - anyone who looked closely enough got an early black-and-white glimpse when the automaker released the upcoming car's first teaser image in January of this year - but we do know that the latest set of images released by the SRT hive mind offer a much more detailed look at the logo.

According to <strike>Dodge</strike> SRT, the logo was named at the 2010 Viper Owners Invitational in Salt Lake City, Utah, and was chosen by Viper owners from amongst a handful of options. While we know very little about the actual car it will adorn, Mark Trostle, Head of SRT Design, said the following: "The new Stryker badge is the most refined, sinister looking and beautiful badge yet, just like the shape of the car." Consider our interest piqued.

UPDATE: A representative from SRT reached out to remind us that the next-generation Viper will not be part of the Dodge lineup, but instead the newly formed SRT brand.
<strike>Dodge</strike> SRT offers behind-the-scenes look at new 'Stryker' Viper logo [UPDATE] originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 15 Feb 2012 08:44:00 EST.
Early last year, Chrysler announced that it would be bringing the Viper back into production, with the brand's performance flagship once again taking its place at the front of the SRT lineup. The next generation Viper won't be unveiled until April at the New York Auto Show, and it looks like Dodge will be doing its best to tease us mercilessly until then with vague sketches of the car. The first has just been posted on the official SRT Facebook page, providing the very first look at the front end of the 2013 Viper. From the silhouette it's hard to really tell what the design will look like, but the overall shape and the hood scoop distinctly remind us of the Viper GTS coupe built from 1996 to 2002.

So, what do we know about the 2013 Viper as of right now? For starters, traction control will be used for the first time in the model's history as mandated by federal law. The powertrain is still unconfirmed, although there are rumors that the V10 could get a bump in displacement to an incredible 8.7 liters.

All of these rumors will be laid to rest come April, but until then we'll just have to settle for the teasers that SRT gives us. We'll be sure to bring you more news on the 2013 Viper as soon as its released, and let us know what you're hoping to see from the new Viper in the Comments.
SRT offers up first 2013 Dodge Viper teaser originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 31 Jan 2012 00:35:00 EST.
Chrysler made a huge splash when it put the Viper into production way back in 1992. But over the course of some eighteen years and 22,000 units of production, we all became used to the idea of having the Viper around. Then it was discontinued about a year and a half ago, and we started missing America's gnarliest of sports cars.

Fortunately the Viper is coming back, and coming back to the Conner Avenue Assembly Plant. The factory had been home to Viper assembly since it was moved there in 1995, but has laid dormant since July 2010. Now that the next-generation Viper is coming 'round the mountain, Chrysler is re-opening Conner Avenue to the tune of some 150 jobs. The re-opening of the facility makes Chrysler, in its own words, the only automaker with multiple assembly plants in Detroit proper.

Intriguingly, the press release after the jump refers to the upcoming new Viper not as a Dodge, but rather as an SRT product. The performance division was recently spun off by Chrysler into its own unit (much like the Ram truck brand was separated from Dodge), with Chrysler's chief designer and former Dodge chief Ralph Gilles at its helm, and the language seems to indicate that the new Viper could be the brand's first product. Color us officially excited.
Continue reading Chrysler confirms next-gen SRT Viper for Conner Avenue assembly

Chrysler confirms next-gen SRT Viper for Conner Avenue assembly originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 13 Dec 2011 13:58:00 EST.
The Dodge Viper has been absent for just one model year, but the natives are restless. With little concrete information out there about the next generation Viper, and Dodge officials remaining tight-lipped about their halo car, anything that surfaces is big news. So how about this for the biggest news yet: Chrysler's SRT Brand President and CEO Ralph Gilles has announced in the pages of Viper magazine that the 2013 Viper will be introduced at the New York Auto Show in early April.

So what might we expect to learn in the next four months? The biggest question is what kind of power the snake will be packing under its unnaturally long hood. Anything other than a V10 would be heresy, so Chrysler will likely bump the Viper's displacement up to 8.7 liters, trumping every other Mopar mill to ever roll out of an engine plant.

The other canard is that the Viper will be based on a sports car from the Fiat stable, like the Alfa Romeo 8C or Maserati GranTurismo. (One rumor even had the new Viper incorporating some sort of Ferrari-derived technology.) Some of this conjecture may prove to be true in the end, but we hardly imagine that the Viper that gets unveiled in New York will be badge-engineered from anything European. Although it will most certainly add a further layer of refinement to the car, Chrysler would be crazy to dilute the Viper's American muscle car spirit.
Next-gen Dodge Viper will debut in April at New York Auto Show originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 30 Nov 2011 18:59:00 EST.
Word has it that Chrysler may be planning an increase in displacement for the 2013 Dodge Viper. According to the Dodge-obsessed crew at Allpar, the vehicle's V10 engine may jump from 8.4 liters to 8.7, making it the largest lump Chrysler has ever placed in a passenger car. Allpar doesn't say exactly where the report originates from, though upping the vehicle's displacement certainly fits the brash character of the Viper. We have to wonder what sort of tricks the company will employ to keep fuel consumption and emissions at reasonable levels, however.

The same report also repeats the fact that the vehicle will be manufactured in 2012 as 2013 model. That certainly runs contrary to those whispers we heard about the 2013 Viper receiving a clandestine unveil at a Florida charity event.
Next-gen Viper may get 8.7-liter V10 originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 27 Oct 2011 14:29:00 EST.
Here's an odd rumor floating around the cyberether: Despite the fact that Dodge has previously said that the next-generation Viper won't arrive until late 2012 as a 2013 model, reports are surfacing indicating that the automaker may display the vehicle at a charity event in Miami next month. According to Top Speed, Dodge will pay a visit to Ride and Smiles at Homestead-Miami Speedway. The charity allows children who suffer from chronic illnesses such as cancer, diabetes, Crohn's disease and Colitis to ride along with current NASCAR drivers around the 2.3-mile road course in some of the hottest cars on the market right now.

Top Speed reports that one of the vehicles in attendance will be the next-generation Viper, though no source has been given for that information.

Far be it from us to rain on that parade, but a small charity event in Florida seems like an unlikely spot to unveil the new face of the Dodge halo car. Perhaps they'll show a teaser image or a mule? Earlier reports have indicated that the 2013 Viper would first be seen at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show, which would seem to be a more fitting venue.
It's one thing to quietly anticipate the arrival of something exciting. It's quite another when you can actually see it coming, so here's a batch of spy shots showing the next-generation Dodge Viper under development.

Don't get too excited, though, because there's little to see from this early test mule. It's largely wearing the bodywork from the last Viper, and what's new is heavily disguised. What we can tell is that the headlights stretch back farther over the hood than the previous model, above the updated crosshair grille now in use across the Dodge model range. The placement of the air scoops and hood louvers appear different, and from what we can see at least, the front end seems to be more refined than its brutish predecessors.

Of course, it's what's behind that new front end that counts. It may be too early to say if the V10 will return of whether regulatory restrictions will force Chrysler to go with something slightly more "responsible," but you can bet it'll have more electronic nannies in place, and if the rapidly-integrating Fiat/Chrysler empire plays its cards right, Dodge's Italian sisters could bring some experience to bear. And that can't be a bad thing.
Next-gen Dodge Viper mule caught wearing new front end originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 14 Aug 2011 11:58:00 EST.
Chrysler is finally reining in its big bad snake. After years of shunning stability control for its no-holds-barred feel, the Pentastar is planning to incorporate stability control on the next-generation Dodge Viper. Set to debut in 2012 as a 2013 model, the vehicle's systems are currently undergoing testing on a 2010 chassis, and Chrysler was kind enough to share a photo of the serpent slithering through the snow.

There's just something about seeing a supercar on the powder that makes us grin like a canary-fed feline.

What else do we know about the next-generation Viper? Few solid details have been confirmed as of yet, but word on the web is that buyers can look forward to somewhere between 600 and 700 horsepower. There's no indication as to whether those ponies will come from a V10 as in days of old or if Chrysler will opt for something with fewer cylinders and more forced induction. Either way, there will be enough power on hand to rankle the chains of hardware like the Corvette ZR1 and Nissan GT-R.

Chrysler says that the company is prepping the Viper for the next "Supercar Olympics," but from the sound of things, the beast will be more at home in an all-out street brawl. We can't wait. Chrysler's brief statement is available after the jump.

The Dodge Viper has always been an impressive looking vehicle, but its muscled lines haven't ever been what we'd call feminine. That may change with the next-generation version of the Snake. Ralph Gilles, head of Chrysler design and the Dodge brand, says that the look of the next Dodge Viper will be inspired by "a naked woman on the beach."

Sorry, but we're having a hard time coming up with a witty quip after that one (well, other than the one in the headline).

Gilles made the announcement while speaking with reporters at the Automotive News World Conference, and while the revelation about the vehicle's design inspiration was a big highlight, he also announced that the next Viper would take dead aim at stealing buyers away from both the Porsche brand and the Chevrolet Corvette. That's especially true when it comes to the crowd of younger buyers - guys and girls under 45.

The next-generation Viper is set to debut in 2013, and while that gives Dodge plenty of time to get the car right, we don't expect either Porsche or Chevrolet to sit back and allow the Viper to play catch up. Suddenly we're very excited to see what the sports car world looks like in two years.

According to The Detroit News, most of the rumors we've been hearing about the next Dodge Viper aren't true. The meanest of the Dodge models won't be riding on a modified Alfa Romeo or Ferrari platform when it bows anew in 2012 as a 2013 model. The Pentastar has said while there may be some similarities to the 8C Competizione, the Viper will make use of entirely unique underpinnings and will carry significantly different proportions compared to the Italians. Part of that means doing away with the snake's iconic long hood in favor of a design with a little more balance.

What's more, Dodge head Ralph Giles tells the Detroit daily that the Mopar supercar won't utilize a Ferrari engine for its power, though he stopped short of saying whether or not the old 640 horsepower V10 will survive the vehicle's rebirth. That means that a new lump may surface, though the number of cylinders and how much horsepower it will produce remain a mystery. Thanks for the tip, Prhime.
