Automakers have always known that the best way to sell a car is to put potential buyers behind the wheel. With that in mind, savvy car manufacturers have tapped into the rental car industry to entice renters - studies show they are twice as likely to buy a new vehicle within the next six months - as potential new customers, and use them for market research.

General Motors is piloting a program with its Chevrolet brand that puts its midsize Malibu sedans in Enterprise Rent-A-Car fleets located in markets popular with that type of buyer. To nudge interested renters towards the showroom, QR Codes have been placed prominently in the vehicles. When conveniently scanned by a smartphone, the codes connect users to Chevrolet's website where they can find specifications, pricing and dealership locations.

Chrysler Group is also working with Enterprise, but taking things a step further. Its QR Codes not only send people to the automaker's website, it links them to walk-around videos and offers them discounts on vehicle purchases in a manner similar to targeted direct mail. But selling cars isn't Chrysler's only objective, as they have been working with renters to gather opinions on vehicle factors including engine power and cabin comfort. If you've got a captive audience, why not?
Car companies dialing-in rental car test drives originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 04 Apr 2013 16:31:00 EST.
To say that things aren't going well for the newly redesigned 2013 Chevrolet Malibu is a pretty sizable understatement. Reports have been swirling about the Malibu getting an emergency design refresh, less than a year after its introduction, as well as having its production at the Fairfax Assembly Plant halted twice already this year for excessive inventory. Now, Motor Trend is reporting that the midsize sedan will be receiving price drops across the board ranging from $300 on a number of models up to $770 on the 1LT trim; offsetting some of MSRP drop, though, the destination charge has increased from $760 to $810.

Without destination, the entry-level Malibu LS now starts at $21,995, which is still about $300 more than a Honda Accord and about $300 less than the segment's top-selling Toyota Camry. This new pricing also drops the price of the Eco, 2LT and 3LT trims by $300. The LTZ trim has dropped by $415, meaning that the Malibu's top dog now starts at just under $30,000, excluding destination.

Here are the new starting prices for all eight of the Malibu trim levels compared to the previous prices for the 2013 model year (including destination):

 1LS - $22,805 (previous price: $23,150)

 1LT - $23,995 (previous price: $24,765)

 2LT - $25,700 (previous price: $26,000)

 3LT - $27,410 (previous price: $27,710)

 Eco 1SA - $25,795 (previous price: $26,095)

 Eco 2SA - $27,405 (previous price: $27,705)

 1LTZ - $28,715 (previous price: $28,590)

 2LTZ - $30,510 (previous price: $30,925)

As inventory of the Chevrolet Malibu and Buick LaCrosse continues to pile up, General Motors will be idling its Fairfax Assembly Plant for two weeks, according to Automotive News. This move comes about a month after the plant was shut down for three weeks in late December and early January for the same reason. As of January 31, the GM had a 94-day supply of Malibu stock while the LaCrosse was a little worse with a 117-day supply.

Just last week, GM announced that it would be investing $600 million in upgrading this plant, but it's unclear what future plans the company has in store for Fairfax considering slow sales of both the plant's models. We do expect a refreshed and more luxurious LaCrosse shortly and an early design update for the Malibu to be announced at some point this year, although we have had no official word as to when either will happen.
GM throttles back Chevy Malibu, Buick LaCrosse production over swollen inventories originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 06 Feb 2013 15:31:00 EST.
According to a letter from General Motors to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, flaws in the build process of the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu have led to the recall of 8,519 cars. Units built between December 6, 2011 and January 15, 2013 may have been assembled with rear suspension cradles that had insufficient torque applied to certain bolts. That out-of-spec assembly could lead to issues ranging from slight noises to a loss of vehicle control.

The problem was first noticed in December of last year by a GM test fleet driver and eventually tracked back to the improperly torqued bolts on the suspension cradle assembled through July 2012 by a supplier located not too far from the Malibu's Detroit/Hamtramck Assembly Plant. Since an official NHTSA recall notice has not been issued yet, it isn't clear whether or not Detroit-built Malibus were the only ones affected (the 2013 Malibu is also built at GM's Fairfax Assembly Plant in Kansas City, Kansas). Dealers will fix the problem by inspecting vehicles for proper torque specs, retightening if not within specs and, in some cases, perform a rear-wheel alignment.
GM recalls 8,500 Chevrolet Malibu models for rear suspension glitch originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 04 Feb 2013 14:15:00 EST.
We don't have to look much further than the 2013 Ford Fusion as proof that family cars should no longer be boring to look at, and after apparently taking some heat for the redesign of the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu, Chevrolet is reportedly preparing an emergency redesign of its midsize sedan in a similar fashion that we just saw happen to the 2013 Honda Civic. Automotive News is reporting that Chevy is working on refreshing the Malibu by the end of 2013, which is about 18 months after the new car went on sale earlier this year.

General Motors CEO Dan Akerson was quoted as saying that an enhanced, but "not dramatic," design update is being planned for the Malibu by this time next year, and it will at least include a new front fascia. Based on the styling direction at Chevrolet as seen on the new Impala and Traverse, we expect the updated 'Bu to get more of an angular look especially in regards to the grille and headlights.

The sooner-than-expected design change is apparently a result of criticisms from dealers and the media as well as unimpressive sales figures. AN says that Malibu sales were up four percent earlier in the year due to increased incentives to move the 2012 models, but once the full model year changeover took place (in September and October), sales dropped by three percent.
Chevy Malibu to get early refresh to combat slow sales, poor reviews originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 07 Dec 2012 09:28:00 EST.
One of the greatest aspects of the SEMA show is the freedom it gives automakers and tuners to play around a little. Where other shows' bread and butter are more serious conceptual pieces or production-bound unveils, cars at SEMA are very often flights of fancy that are really only intended to bring some excitement to a model or brand.

Case in point is Chevrolet's Malibu Turbo Performance Concept, which, while not offering added performance over the standard 2.0 turbo's 259 horsepower, does look a lot more interesting than the standard model. A super-aggressive ground effects package, concept-specific blue paint, unique badges, dashes of red accent work and a lot of what's called "black-ice tinted chrome" all help to make this a Malibu that you won't forget.

When we last left our hero, Malibu Man was struggling mightily. Beset by meddlesome marketers and ineffective engineers, allies who had inexplicably trapped him in the dull green glow of an Eco ray, Malibu Man was about to face off against new and stronger nemeses than ever before, foes intent on dispatching both our hero and the Middle American Way he represents to car buyers across the globe. Would Malibu Man fight back? Could he stand a chance when Aston Fusion, Camrybot and Dr. Altima came to battle?

Well it's time for the next exciting episode of Malibu Man Against the Midsize Marauders, and - spoiler alert - this one has a happier ending than the last. We finally had the opportunity to drive the mainstream version of the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu equipped with a new 2.5-liter four-cylinder and did, in fact, come away with our expectations firmly met: If you want a Malibu, this is the one to buy.
Continue reading 2013 Chevrolet Malibu 2.5

2013 Chevrolet Malibu 2.5 originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 04 Sep 2012 11:57:00 EST.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has crowned two sedans and a hatchback as Top Safety Picks: the 2013 Chevrolet Malibe Eco, 2012 Hyundai Azera and 2012 Toyota Prius c. The redesigned 2013 Malibu joins its 2012 model-mate as a Top Pick, and the 2013 earned a good side impact rating even without its optional side airbags.

The Prius c also has siblings that have won the award, the Prius and Prius v. The Azera had been rated in a few earlier tests, but in completing the testing regime with good marks all 'round it earned the accolade. The Top Pick moniker is given to vehicles that score "Good" in the IIHS's front, side, rollover and rear-impact tests.

Have a look below for video of the Malibu and Prius c going through their side-impact exams.
Continue reading IIHS crowns three new Top Safety Picks [w/video]

IIHS crowns three new Top Safety Picks [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 17 May 2012 09:27:00 EST.
We weren't exactly smitten with the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu Eco when we got the chance to take one out for a spin, thanks in part to the eAssist wizardry aimed at improving the vehicle's fuel economy. With a lackluster drivetrain, regenerative brakes and low rolling resistance tries, the Malibu Eco simply isn't capable of keeping its head high among the competition.

Even so, we were told to wait for the Ecotec 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder set to debut this year. Now we know why. According to General Motors, the engine is good for <strike>269</strike> 259 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. More importantly, all that torque comes on at a very low 1,700 rpm.

The direct-injection engine helps the Malibu hit 60 mph in a scant 6.3 seconds. Trust us when we say that's an improvement over the Eco model. While there's no word on fuel economy, we would expect the engine to return well better than the 17 mpg city and 26 mpg highway supplied by the outgoing 3.6-liter V6, an engine that was only good for 252 horsepower.

This isn't the first time GM has dabbled with a turbocharged four-cylinder. The company supplied buyers with a 2.0-liter Ecotec in vehicles like the Pontiac Solstice GXP, HHR SS and Cobalt SS that put out 260 horsepower. See below for the full press release.
Continue reading 2013 Chevy Malibu's turbo four rated at 259 HP, 0-60 in 6.3 seconds

2013 Chevy Malibu's turbo four rated at 259 HP, 0-60 in 6.3 seconds originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 08 Mar 2012 17:59:00 EST.
It's been a very long time since the midsize market went easy on American automakers, and recent years have conspired to make an uphill sales slog even steeper with a rash of new and redesigned models. Kia and Hyundai have taken up arms by offering buyers the stylish and efficient Optima and Sonata in an effort to dethrone longtime D-segment stalwarts like the Honda Accord and the freshly redesigned Toyota Camry. Not one to back away from a fray, Nissan has been busily sharpening the next-generation Altima to do battle with the rest of the war horses on the field, and Volkswagen has just recently unleashed a new Americanized Passat to riotous praise from the automotive press.

The barbarians aren't just at the gates for automakers like Ford and General Motors. They're picnicking on the front lawn.

Ford has turned to its global operations for help designing a new Fusion fit to beat back the invading hordes while General Motors has focused on transforming the aging Chevrolet Malibu into a weapon capable of carving out a more sizable market share. Built on new bones borrowed from the company's Global Mid-Size architecture, the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu will boast an all-new direct-injection 2.5-liter Ecotec four-cylinder engine by mid-2012 and a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder version will debut shortly thereafter.

But buyers who flock to Chevrolet dealers in the first quarter of 2012 won't find those vehicles waiting for them on the show room floor. Instead, GM has moved to launch the new 2013 Malibu with just one engine option - it's most efficient. Meet the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu Eco.
Continue reading 2013 Chevrolet Malibu Eco

2013 Chevrolet Malibu Eco originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 19 Dec 2011 11:57:00 EST.
Who will want to buy a brand-new, nicely equipped 2013 Chevy Malibu Eco for $25,995? If you peruse General Motors' press release, then you may think it's people who are cross-shopping a Volkswagen Passat TDI or a Hyundai Sonata Hybrid, a Toyota Camry Hybrid or a Ford Fusion Hybrid. These are the vehicles that GM helpfully points out cost more than the new Malibu, and the green competition is completely intentional. The Eco trim level, coming in the first quarter of 2012, will be the first 2013 Malibu released and gets 26 miles per gallon in the city and 38 mpg on the highway (GM estimates). The other trim levels for the 2013 model year - LS, LT and LTZ - are not coming until the summer. Until then, the 2012 model will still be produced.

As it was getting the new Malibu Eco ready, GM looked at who buys green cars, and they found are people who tend to like a little bit of fancy technology inside. That's why, Russ Clark, GM's Director of Marketing, Midsize and Performance cars, told AutoblogGreen, the main marketing message will be that the Malibu Eco offers a compete technological package, combining good fuel economy (thanks to eAssist) and an infotainment system that is more commonly found in higher-end models. "It really is an outstanding package of fuel economy and price," Clark said.

Nonetheless, even with the Eco label, the 2013 Malibu Eco certainly doesn't have the same green cred that a car with the hybrid label does. Clark said that "Someone who is dead-set in their mind that they have to have a hybrid," will be difficult to persuade, but that, "this kind of technology [eAssist] will continue to grow over time. It's something that people will become more familiar with."

This is similar to how the Chevrolet Volt is being received. People don't necessarily know everything about the Volt's powertrain, but they may come into the dealership to find out. Once there, they may purchase a Volt or a Cruze or, soon, a Malibu Eco. "With new technology, you will attract people to your products," Clark said.

A new report says General Motors has decided against producing a coupe version of the forthcoming 2013 Chevrolet Malibu. We don't know how far into the development process a two-door Malibu made it, but renderings of the car were shown to journalists last week. When queried, however, GM design chief Ed Welburn told Inside Line, "A Malibu coupe could be a pretty nice car, but it is not in the plan right now."

GM introduced the new Malibu at the 2011 New York Auto Show, and has said it intends the car to be a truly global product sold in 100 countries. Shorter and wider than the old model, the new Malibu's proportions would have certainly lent themselves to a two-door - and we'd be lying if we said it wouldn't warm our hearts to see a "Chevelle" badge on the decklid.

Alas, the coupe market isn't what it once was, and Chevy clearly has other plans for positioning the car. A 38-mile-per-gallon Eco model was also announced at the New York introduction, taking advantage of GM's eAssist mild hybrid system currently used in the Buick line to improve the Malibu's fuel economy by five mpg compared to the 2012 model.

All standard 2013 Malibu's will be powered by a new 190-horsepower, 2.5-liter, direct injection four-cylinder. This may have influenced the decision against a coupe, which would have demanded a sportier engine. Also likely playing into Chevy's thinking is an increasingly crowded brand lineup. With new nameplates like the Sonic and Spark joining the one-year-old Cruze and Volt, Chevy sales and marketing has quite a lot on its plate already.
Chevy won't build Malibu coupe originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 18 Oct 2011 13:30:00 EST.
The 2013 Chevrolet Malibu may be General Motors' best attempt yet at creating a truly global midsize sedan. GM says the Malibu will be sold in 100 countries spanning six continents, and one of those markets will be in South Korea, a country where the Malibu has never been offered before.

The General claims that interest in the 'Bu has grown in Korea, with 30,000 Internet club fan members in a market where the sedan has never before been offered. The excitement comes after GM unveiled the Malibu at the 2011 Shanghai Motor Show, where the fresh four-door was named "Most Eye-Catching Car."

Korean car buyers tend to be a very nationalistic bunch, but that won't be a problem for the Malibu, since GM will build the sedan in Bupyeong, Korea this fall. In fact, the Bupyeong plant will be the first facility to build the new sedan. The move to sell the Malibu in Korea is part of GM's plan to replace the Daewoo make with the Chevrolet brand. Hit the jump to read over the GM press release.
Continue reading GM announces 2013 Malibu will go on sale in South Korea

GM announces 2013 Malibu will go on sale in South Korea originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 05 May 2011 09:00:00 EST.
Yesterday, we revealed the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu to you here at the New York Auto Show, and we were pleasantly surprised by the announcement of the 38 mile-per-gallon Malibu Eco model. Today, we bring you live shots of both cars now that the flashbulbs have dimmed enough to allow us a better look at both models.

As stated earlier, the new Malibu now rides on General Motors' Epsilon II architecture, and in this application, it's at once shorter and wider than the departing model. It's also a good bit more handsome than the already well-sculpted outgoing car. While the front-end is evolutionary, with its twin port grille and similar headlamps, it's the rear end that gains the most definition. Many felt the previous-gen model looked great until it got to the rear-end, which sort of felt like the designers ran out of inspiration when they got past the rear window. The new car remedies this with three-dimensional taillamps inspired by the Camaro (and looking more than a bit like the Lexus GS from certain angles).

The eAssist mild-hybrid Eco model doesn't look appreciably different from the standard 2.5-liter range, despite registering 26 mpg in the city and 38 out on the highway. Alterations include 17-inch wheels on low rolling-resistance tires, four underbody shields that cover about 50 percent of the vehicle's dirty bits, as well as model-specific side mirrors and the expected badging.

Inside, more Camaro influence can be seen thanks to items like the 'squircle' gauges. Materials are noticeably richer than before, and high-end detailing like contrasting ice blue stitching on the LTZ's leather seats and increased ambient lighting lend the cabin a more premium aura.

Additionally, we're looking forward to getting some time with Chevy's MyLink infotainment system, as well, but it looks promising, with a crisp high-resolution screen (with integrated storage beneath for phones and such) and the ability to link-in to online music services like Pandora and Stitcher.

Check both models out for yourself in our high-res galleries below.

It says something about the breakneck pace of America's mid-size sedan segment that the departing Chevrolet Malibu was beginning to feel long in the tooth. Introduced for the 2008 model year to great fanfare and critical praise, General Motors' family four-door has seen its appeal dinged by new entries from companies like Kia, Hyundai and Volkswagen, along with massively updated models from companies like Ford (not to mention perennial favorites from Honda and Toyota).

Despite its evolutionary styling, this is more than a simple refresh of the current Epsilon-based car, the Malibu that debuted today at the 2011 New York Auto Show actually gains some revised proportions for its eighth generation thanks to its migration to GM's Epsilon II platform. Shorter overall, the new Malibu nevertheless boasts increased trunk space and a number of enhanced interior metrics thanks to increased width, though sitting inside, we found rear-seat headroom to be tighter than we remembered. Part of the reasoning why Chevy has chosen to go with a shorter overall length is to increase the car's global appeal - the Malibu will be sold in over 100 world markets (and in many of them, bigger is not always better).

Powered at launch by a 2.5-liter Ecotec four-cylinder paired with a six-speed automatic, the powertrain will produce 190 horsepower and 180 pound-feet of torque. A forced-induction four-cylinder is expected at a later date, but the Malibu is likely to follow Hyundai-Kia's lead in eschewing six-cylinder power altogether.

Thus far, Chevy isn't releasing fuel economy figures, but it claims the 2013 Malibu is the most aerodynamic car in its segment (helped, no doubt, by drag-reducing active shutters up front), along with being the quietest. Officials have told us that they believe the car will return fuel economy above 30 miles per gallon.

Chevrolet surprised attendees at its press conference today by also rolling out the Malibu ECO, an eAssist-equipped high efficiency model that's expected to earn fuel economy ratings of 26 mpg city and a lofty 38 mpg highway. Powered by a 2.4-liter Ecotec four-cylinder and aided by the aforementioned eAssist mild hybrid system and special aerodynamic tweaks, GM says the Malibu ECO can go up to 550 miles between fill ups, delivering fuel economy figures that would make some hybrid family sedans envious.

General Motors has officially debuted the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu ahead of its global introduction at the Shanghai Motor Show. The model boasts a completely fresh design inside and out along with more efficient drivetrain options. GM says the new Malibu will compete in over 100 markets, though we have to imagine the vehicle will also be integral to the company's plan to more than double its sales in China by 2015.

As a result, GM has shortened the Malibu overall, though the vehicle is both wider and offers more trunk space and more rear legroom than the previous-generation vehicle. That said, we're told that those back thrones may be a tight fit head-room-wise for taller people.

Additionally, we understand that in the flesh, the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu wears more than a passing resemblance to the Lexus GS bloodline, though the squared-off taillamps are likely intended to draw parallels to the muscular Chevrolet Camaro. Unfortunately, those fancy LED pieces will only show up on higher-level LTZ trims. Up front, designers adapted some of the successful features of the last-generation car into a more aggressive aerodynamic shape.

Under the hood, buyers can look forward to a more-efficient 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine mated to a six-speed automatic gearbox. The direct-injection mill delivers 190 horsepower and 180 pound-feet of torque, though GM hasn't released any mileage estimates at this point. Hit the jump to check out the full press blast.

The 2013 Chevrolet Malibu will be unveiled on Monday at the Shanghai Motor Show. General Motors is expectedly making a big deal of the event, and started dropping teasers a couple weeks back. Those were followed by a full-on, high-resolution pic of the Malibu in red on Thursday. And now? Another picture of the China-spec car in blue. Since it's static, we get a clean look at the new Malibu's wheels and a better idea of the car's profile

If you feel like you're already overstuffed on the 2013 Malibu, try to save some room for the main course, which comes in the form of the sedan's official debut in Shanghai. The live reveal will be streamed via webcast on Chevy's Facebook page on Monday, April 18 at 8:30 p.m. EDT.

Well, what do we have here? It seems that the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu has leaked online on General Motors' own media site. Only this lone picture has surfaced, but it gives us a very good glimpse at the next-gen Malibu ahead of the car's official debut at the rapidly approaching Shanghai Motor Show.

Despite the fact that we can only see one angle of the car, it's clear that the 2013 Malibu will be a nice looking piece of sheetmetal. Up front is the latest incarnation of the stacked Bowtie grille of the current Chevrolet range, flanked by a pair of multi-element headlights. The flanks are well sculpted, with a distinct Coke bottle kink that catches the eye.

We can't see the rear of the car from this shot, but we know that the 2013 Malibu will sport tailights reminiscent of the Camaro's four-pack of red lenses. And, judging by the few teasers of the interior, GM intends to pack its next midsize entry to the gills with all the latest technology.

Spy photographer Jim Dunne has spent 28 years of his life shooting vehicles that weren't necessarily meant to be seen. For that reason, Dunne and automakers probably don't always get along all that well, but the longtime spy photographer got together with General Motors to discuss the cat and mouse game played between OEMs and the spy shooters. That's a fun story, but the real carrot is that the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu is the subject matter for the video.

Hit the jump to watch the nearly three-minute-long video. The entire clip is shot with a well-disguised 2013 Malibu in plain sight, and you can plainly see HID headlights plus some of the contour lines that will make up Chevrolet's next-generation sedan.
This time The General shows that the MyLink infotainment screen can flip out, revealing considerable storage room for your tech toys. Check out all the teaser pics in the gallery below. GM will unveil the 2011 Malibu on Facebook on April 19, and we expect to see the car in person at the upcoming New York Auto Show.
