Only a flatworm would not have predicted the Cadillac ATS would help increase sales for America's erstwhile luxury brand of record; however, even the best automotive oracles didn't realize by how much: The ATS fueled a 49-percent increase of the brand's year-on-year sales in March, the sixth straight month of growth for Cadillac. The momentum helped push General Motors to post a 6.4-increase in sales in March versus 2012, leading its domestic competitors.

Dealership salesmen are among the first to register the shift occurring at Cadillac. A Texas dealer related an incident in which he helped a mother affix a baby seat in a car for a test drive, explaining that as opposed to the older buyers that are still a Cadillac mainstay he's getting "a pretty diverse group that's coming through the door now" who are "younger and better educated." Aided by incentives on the ATS, Cadillac's sales are up 38 percent so far this year, overtaking Acura as the fourth best selling luxury brand, and GM stock is benefiting with incremental gains because of it. Based on early response, the new 2014 Cadillac CTS should keep things going in the same direction.

The trend at the Wreath and Crest is part of a larger sales trend happening among domestics - with other models like the Dodge Dart and Ford Fusion doing well - and overall US car sales. Head over to Bloomberg for the big picture and role the ATS plays in it.
A few signs that Cadillac's revival is taking hold originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 08 Apr 2013 11:30:00 EST.

There is no escaping the luxury all-wheel drive empire Audi has built for itself over the past 15 years. While nearly every high-end marque has at least one offering with power at all four corners, the hardware can't help but play second fiddle to Ingolstadt's Quattro kingdom. Leather-lined all-wheel drive is simply Audi the way minimum wage is an English degree. But General Motors seems hell-bent on raiding as many established fiefdoms as possible with the 2013 Cadillac ATS. Engineers and designers made no secret of the fact that the baby Cadillac was penned specifically to take on the BMW 3 Series, but Audi should be no less concerned about the newest luxury prince from Detroit.

GM has been stuffing all-wheel drive systems under their vehicles for years, but the effort hasn't come without nasty side effects. Unfortunate understeer, extra ride height, smallish wheels and porky curb weight meant opting for all-wheel drive was like signing your driving pleasure's death warrant. Would you like polished brass or brushed nickel hardware for your right foot's coffin, sir?

But the 2013 Cadillac ATS 3.6 AWD is remarkably bereft of those unattractive traits. Is this neutral-driving powerhouse enough to punch a hole in the Audi front line?
Continue reading 2013 Cadillac ATS 3.6 AWD

2013 Cadillac ATS 3.6 AWD originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 27 Feb 2013 11:57:00 EST.
The new Cadillac ATS is an impressive sport sedan, often considered one of the most serious threats to the BMW 3 Series. Unlike GM's previous attempts, this four door brings aggressive styling, commendable chassis dynamics and class-leading handling to the highly competitive battle. And, like its daunting German foe, Cadillac offer several powertrain choices.

I recently spent time with the ATS 2.0T Premium on my home California turf. Fitted with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine mated to a six-speed manual gearbox with a limited-slip rear differential, my tester was lightly optioned, with only a paint upgrade and a cold weather package. That brought the as-tested price to $46,305, configured the way I imagine most enthusiasts would prefer. This meant I fully expected to enjoy a week with a tossable sport sedan that boasted "fun-to-drive" as its middle name, but all was not well...

Driving Notes

The ATS' stiff chassis, strong brakes and upscale interior were my favorite attributes. A close second would be the extraordinary styling that manages to be sporty and bold, yet classy and timeless at the same time.

Cadillac's innovative touchscreen CUE interface with haptic feedback may work well in the showroom, but at least for this journo, its application in a bouncy and vibration-laden automotive environment is a mistake. In addition to being slow to respond and frustrating to use, it is a hair-pulling experience trying to steady a pointer finger to touch the proper real estate whether that is a capacitive touch volume bar or greasy fingerprinted flat panel display. Cadillac actually provides a microfiber cloth in the glovebox to wipe it clean, but isn't that admitting a preexisting flaw (would you have confidence in an automaker who provided an oil drip pan with each new it car sold)?

I am a huge fan of GM's magnetic ride control suspension, but I didn't like its tuning in this ATS. When pushed hard, the rear tires seemed to skip over imperfections in the pavement, meaning the rubber wasn't staying in contact with the undulations in the road. The two-mode damping was almost too firm in default setting and then harsh when configured to sport mode (the console-mounted button must inexplicably be pushed twice to toggle the suspension change).

This segment is embracing 2.0-liter four-cylinder engines for their excellent combination of power and fuel efficiency, but I found little to like with the turbocharged engine in the ATS. It felt and sounded buzzy, with nothing but racket coming from under the hood. Plus, it ran out of steam well before redline and fuel economy on my enthusiastically driven watch was not spectacular (16 mpg around town and 26 mpg on the highway). While it did provide decent power, especially in the thick of its torque band, it desperately needs a sporty exhaust note to bring a bit more excitement to the game.

I generally prefer manual transmissions, yet the traditional six-speed gearbox in the ATS didn't impress me one bit. Its gearing is too short (60 mph requires a shift to third) and its throws are very mechanical in feel. In execution, the shifts cannot be hurried as it only results in a rubbery response from the driveline. Many of my peers say the 3.6-liter V6 mated to a six-speed automatic (as we reviewed in our First Drive) is a much better powertrain choice. The driver in me finds that a bummer.

BMW's innovative iDrive was introduced in 2001, and a dozen years later, automakers are still learning hard lessons about what consumers want in their infotainment systems. In response to owner feedback - and a few media drubbings - about the delayed and occasionally fickle responses of its CUE (short for Cadillac User Experience) system, Cadillac has told Wired that it's going to issue an update this year.

Coming for the XTS and ATS, the new software will mean quicker haptic feedback to driver inputs on the touchscreen and the buttons, and snappier responses on screen. Down the road, Cadillac's VP of marketing says that a different mix of screen controls and hard buttons is "something you'll be seeing in the future" - the system is presently a mix of touchscreen-based controls and capacitive-touch switchgear - there are no knobs or physical pushbuttons to speak of, and the omission of both has proven to be a divisive issue among consumers and industry pundits.

Cadillac hasn't provided a date for when the CUE update will be issued, but it has indicated that the service will be performed by dealers, not sent wirelessly.
Cadillac rushing update for laggy CUE infotainment system originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 05 Feb 2013 19:01:00 EST. And without further ado, we present your winners: the Cadillac ATS and Ram 1500.

Runners-up for the award are the Ford Fusion and Honda Accord in the car category, and the Mazda CX-5 and Ford C-Max in the truck/utility class. The winners were determined by a non-profit, independent jury of 50 American and Canadian journalists, including some members of the Autoblog staff.

This is the first win for Cadillac as a Car of the Year, though the CTS was a finalist in 2008. General Motors brands have won the Car of the Year award five times. This win for the 2013 Ram 1500 marks the third truck win for the Chrysler Group. The Ram (well, Dodge Ram) first won the award in 1994.
Continue reading Cadillac ATS, Ram 1500 named 2013 North American Car and Truck/Utility of the Year

Cadillac ATS, Ram 1500 named 2013 North American Car and Truck/Utility of the Year originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 14 Jan 2013 07:39:00 EST.
2012 is almost in the books and automakers are spending December gearing up for the 2013 auto show season, which tips off next month at the Detroit Auto Show. Traditionally, the latter opens up with the announcement of the North American Car and Truck/Utility of the Year awards, and this year figures to be no different.

But up until this moment, we didn't know which six vehicles would be parked ahead of the stage as finalists, with executives and engineers waiting for the winners to be disclosed. Whittled down from October's "short list" of nominees (11 cars and 10 truck/utility vehicles), the finalists are as follows:

2013 North American Car of the Year:

 Cadillac ATS

 Ford Fusion

 Honda Accord

2013 North American Truck/Utility of the Year:

 Ford C-Max

 Mazda CX-5

 Ram 1500

As determined by a non-profit, independent jury of 50 US and Canadian journalists(*), the pair of lists above arguably feature a surprise or two, and they open up some potentially interesting story lines. Will the Ford and Honda, which compete against each other in the marketplace, split votes among jurors who only want to vote for one family sedan? Did the Scion FR-S/Subaru BRZ twins miss making the finalists' list because they were listed as separate entries, or did they just not win over enough jurors? Until the voting patterns of the jurors are released (after the awards are announced), we won't really know if any of these scenarios played into the calculations.

What do you think of these six vehicles? Which would you vote for? Which do you think will win? Participate in our polls below by guessing which vehicles will win, then state your case for who should win in Comments.

*Full disclosure: Author is a NACTOY jury member.

Less than a month ago, the Chevrolet Camaro scored a five-star overall safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. It did so by scoring a five stars in every individual crash test administered, becoming the first car to earn perfect scores across the board since the NHTSA crash test procedures were revised in 2011.

Now another vehicle in the General Motors stable has scored top marks on the frontal, side and rollover crash tests on its way to a five-star overall rating: the Cadillac ATS (in both rear- and all-wheel-drive variants). As for the Cadillac's other 2013 model year competition, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class hasn't yet finished its test, the BMW 3 Series scored five-stars overall but received a four-star rating in the frontal crash test, and the Audi A4 in both front- and all-wheel drive received, like the ATS, five stars across the board.
2013 Cadillac ATS earns rare perfect score in NHTSA crash tests originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 11 Dec 2012 14:16:00 EST.
Cadillac designed the compact ATS to compete with the BMW 3 Series, but GM says the new Caddy is also cutting into CTS sales. Edmunds.com backs that up with data showing potential buyers are cross-shopping the ATS with the CTS as well as the BMW.

Automotive News spoke to the head of Cadillac sales, Chase Hawkins, who admits The General expected the ATS to cannibalize sales of the CTS. But Hawkins says a plan is in place to deal with the drop in CTS sales: make fewer of them.

"We've planned for ATS to take some CTS customers out of the market who we otherwise would have seen," Hawkins tells AN. "We definitely are going to be producing fewer CTSes next year to create some of that space for ATS."

The next-generation CTS is expected to be larger and costlier, which should better separate the two stablemates in the marketplace. As the two models find their own niches, AN speculates a few more import buyers to come back to the iconic American brand.
CTS sales nosediving thanks to new ATS, so GM will cut output originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 25 Nov 2012 10:01:00 EST.
The latest episode of "Head 2 Head" from Motor Trend is a battle of the little luxury sixes, looking to see which of these $50,000 sport sedans, all equipped with automatic transmissions, can lay the largest claim to your money: the 321-horsepower, six-speed Cadillac ATS 3.6, the 302-horsepower, seven-speed Mercedes-Benz C350 Sport or the 300-horsepower, eight-speed BMW 335i.

Host Jonny Lieberman doesn't just look at dynamics. He starts off with an assessment of each car's interior and its infotainment interface: CUE on the Cadillac, COMAND on the Mercedes and iDrive on the BMW. A bit of a spoiler, CUE doesn't fare any better here than it did with Consumer Reports, for essentially the same reasons. Thankfully, the ATS has tricks beyond its touchscreen.

The victor and the overall ranking might surprise you. One of the contestants "goes around corners better than it goes in a straight line," one of them would have won the comparo if it were held a year ago, and one earns more mention of the word "rubbery" than you'll hear outside of a Kumho factory.
Although many cars have tried, few have come even close to the capabilities exhibited by the BMW 3 Series. But the Caddilac ATS is a promising small sedan that could very well play spoiler to the most successful sports sedan on the globe. We've sampled both the ATS and the newest 3 Series, but Motor Trend had the chance to get both sport sedans together to test them out in its latest "Head 2 Head" video.

Right off the bat, M/T points out just how close these cars are in just about every category from size to weight to performance when comparing the 328i and ATS 2.0T variants. All of the dimensions are within just inches of each other and Cadillac's weight-conscious construction of the ATS makes it just 24 pounds heavier than the 328i. Both cars use turbocharged 2.0-liter I4 engine, and while on paper the ATS delivers more horsepower and torque, M/T points out that BMW is known for underrating its engines and estimates true output to be somewhere in the neighborhood of 270+ horsepower.

On the track, the BMW barely edges out the Cadillac in 0-60 and 1/4-mile times, but for a true comparison of how the ATS stacks up, M/T's Jonny Lieberman puts both cars through their paces along some of California's best back roads. Surprisingly, with "sharper and crisper" steering and Magnetic Ride Control, the ATS seemed to be more impressive along the twisty roads than the BMW, but both cars' biggest downfall was their manual transmissions. The shifter of the ATS exhibited a couple of issues that could seriously hamper performance, including a "ghost detent" when shifting into second gear and the need to double shift into gears, and Jonny really had nothing nice to say about the BMW's shifter or throttle response, either.

We're not going to play spoiler here, because regardless of which car is victorious in this head-to-head comparison, it's clear that driving enthusiasts are the true winners. No spoiler here, folks. Check out the video below to see if BMW retains its dominance in this segment or if Cadillac has managed to dethrone the king.
Continue reading Motor Trend declares victor in epic BMW 3 Series versus Cadillac ATS battle

Motor Trend declares victor in epic BMW 3 Series versus Cadillac ATS battle originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 26 Sep 2012 19:58:00 EST.
We've barely got to know it, and already the 2013 Cadillac ATS is winning awards from just the kind of arbiters that Cadillac has been trying to win the attentions of. Calling the ATS "perhaps the single most important thing Detroit has built in years" (sorry, Chevrolet Volt), and effusing that the "base ATS is $33,990, but from the right angle, the body creases and brightwork touches make it seem worth ten grand more," Esquire magazine has named the entry-level luxury sport sedan its Car of the Year. It now wears the same tiara that has adorned the Audi A7 for the past year.

On the sidelines, other accolades Esquire handed out were:

o. Innovator of the Year - Elon Musk, CEO and Founder of Tesla
o. Domestic Car of the Year - 2013 Ford Focus ST
o. SUV of the Year - 2012 Range Rover Evoque
o. Sports Car of the Year - 2013 Porsche Boxster
o. Debuts of the Year - 2013 Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ
o. Luxury Car of the Year - 2013 BMW 640i Gran Coupe
o. Hatchback of the Year - 2012 Volkswagen Golf R

Back to the ATS, our own assessment was that the car is perhaps an evolution or a mere engine change away from stealing candy from the BMW 3 Series. For a first real effort in the segment, that's no small achievement. Congratulations, Cadillac. There's a press release below with more info, and you'll find the full article at the link.
Continue reading Cadillac nabs Esquire 2012 Car of the Year laurels

Cadillac nabs Esquire 2012 Car of the Year laurels originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 12 Sep 2012 11:02:00 EST.

Let's face it: The BMW 3 Series is more vulnerable now than it has been in over two decades. The poster child of the sports sedan community is currently in the throes of some unpleasant growing pains as it tries to balance efficiency, mass-market appeal and the machine's impressive heritage. Though lighter than its predecessor, the F30 feels heavier from behind the wheel, thanks in part to suspension tuning designed to coddle first and satisfy second. The German wunderkind is larger in every direction with more interior room. But with one surprisingly noisy cabin and a polarizing exterior design, the mighty 3 is in danger of alienating the very audience that made it king.

None of this is news to Cadillac. The overlords at General Motors have been quietly working to carve out a corner of the compact luxury segment for over five years. In that time, a horde of engineers bent under the pressure of constructing a clean-sheet design intended to give hardware like the Audi A4, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Infiniti G line and yes, even the BMW 3 Series something to sweat over.

The fruit of those efforts is the 2013 Cadillac ATS - a front-engine, rear-wheel drive sedan with all of the lusty lines of the larger CTS. Light-weight, properly balanced and loaded with some of the best connectivity tech in the industry, GM has something to be proud of here, but the ATS may not be the Nurburgring-conquering, 3 Series-slaying white knight we've all been hoping for.
Continue reading 2013 Cadillac ATS [w/video]

2013 Cadillac ATS [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 23 Jul 2012 11:57:00 EST.
We don't want to say much about this, because you really should just watch the introductory videos for Cadillac ATS vs. The World, a seriously intense videographic effort for the new entry-level luxury challenger. Racer Derek Hill, son of Formula One World Champion Phil Hill, drives the ATS into some of the planet's most taxing conditions, television actor and anthropology buff Ross Thomas rides shotgun, and Jeff Zwart steps out from behind the wheel of his Porsche 911 GT3 Cup to lead the film crew.

Know beforehand, though, that this is about more than a Cadillac - this is National Geographic meets a really long-form Super Bowl commercial with a ladle full of Top Gear thrown in. And these are only some of the highlights. You can check out this big global video series below, with the launch films from Patagonia and Morocco.
Continue reading Cadillac kicks off ATS marketing with new global video series

Cadillac kicks off ATS marketing with new global video series originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 19 Jul 2012 19:13:00 EST.
The EPA has delivered the fuel economy results for the 2013 Cadillac ATS with the 2.5-liter, four cylinder: 22 city, 33 highway, 26 combined. The response so far range from 'That's not what we expected' to 'Well, what did you expect?' Cadillac describes the ATS as a "compact luxury sedan... built on a foundation of quick, nimble fun-to-drive dynamics and mass efficiency," so everyone is ready to grade on the sports-sedan curve, and while we think taken on their own they're fine if nothing special, some were expecting better frugality from the Ecotec motor.

The issue is that the EPA numbers for the 2.5-liter put the ATS in the thick of the playing field, in there with the 23 city/33 hwy of the BMW 328i, the 21 city/31 hwy of the Mercedes-Benz C250 Sport Sedan and the 22 city/30 hwy of the front-wheel drive Audi A4. But the Cadillac's 202-horsepower and 190 pound-feet mean it is down on power to the other cars in its class - 38 hp shy of the BMW, 39 lb-ft down on the Mercedes-Benz, for instance - at the same time, it is less expensive than the BMW and Mercedes.

Motor Trend reports that General Motors predicts 22 city/32 hwy for the more powerful 2.0-liter turbo that puts out 270 hp and 260 lb-ft, the same as it did for the 2.5-liter, and that's what could make for the biggest question mark. The 2.0-liter would give the ATS a leg up on others in its class - it's not for nothing that the ATS site uses this motor for comparison - and the $1,805 premium over an ATS with the 2.5-liter pegs it exactly to the 328i's $35,795 base price. If the stronger engine does return the same EPA numbers, then until we have a better idea of standard equipment, lots of folks will wonder whether $1,900 is enough monetary space to make a case for a markedly less powerful car that won't save you any money on gas.
Base 2013 Cadillac ATS gets EPA rating of 22 mpg city and 33 hwy originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 11 Jul 2012 11:33:00 EST.
Don't be surprised. This isn't the first time we've heard talk of Cadillac looking to expand its ATS lineup beyond the new-for-2013 sedan. Earlier this year, we reported that the automaker may be looking to move its CTS Coupe and Sport Wagon models down to the ATS line, and before that, our intrepid spy photographers had caught what appears to be a high-power ATS-V out testing.

TheDetroitBureau.com points out that the biggest challenge Cadillac faces in coming up with an ATS coupe is how to create something that doesn't just resemble a smaller version of the larger CTS two-door. Of course, the larger model could just be ditched altogether in favor of a rakish new ATS variant, and while Cadillac (as usual) cannot confirm future product plans, spokespeople within the automaker were a bit ruffled when rumors of the ATS coupe's demise were greatly exaggerated.

An ATS-V is indeed more likely to show up first, though at this point, there's still apparently some back-and-forth about whether or not to throw a big V8 or turbocharged V6 under the hood. We've heard rumors of everything from a 380-horsepower twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 to a 470-horsepower 6.2-liter V8, so at this point, your guess is as good as ours.

Finally, TheDetroitBureau.com reports that future ATS models aren't the only thing spinning through the Cadillac rumormill right now. Apparently, several sources within the automaker have discussed the possibility of adding a convertible to the lineup - something that has been absent since the XLR was killed off a few years ago. Something giant and grandiose like the Ciel concept is certainly an option, but who knows, maybe there's a droptop ATS variant in the works, too.
Cadillac ATS-V, Coupe talks resurface, new convertible model in the works? originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 28 Jun 2012 13:28:00 EST.
If you're just dying to know whether you can order your 2013 Cadillac ATS with, say, the 3.6-liter V6 and a manual transmission, you're in luck. Cadillac has launched its ATS configurator - sans prices - so go ahead and get officially disappointed, as that manual gearbox is only available with the 2.0-liter turbo, and only in rear-drive.

Cadillac shows 10 exterior colors available on the ATS, with four shades of leather and two leatherette trims. We're partial to Opulent Blue Metallic paint and Morello Red leather, though admittedly the two don't really match, which is why Cadillac doesn't allow you to order them together.

Now that we've betrayed the fact that we've already wasted far too much time playing with a configurator that doesn't contain any pricing information whatsoever, we'll suggest you just go mess with it on your own.

We'll circle back once the Caddy team shows us the money.
2013 Cadillac ATS configurator powers up, pricing still TBD originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 17 Jun 2012 14:03:00 EST.
Cadillac's ATS is scheduled to hit dealer showrooms this summer, and General Motors has finally divulged pricing. Its smallest luxury sedan will start at $33,990 including destination(*), but that price will only snag you the entry-level model, powered by a 200-horsepower 2.5-liter four-cylinder paired with a six-speed automatic. Stepping up to the turbocharged, 270-hp 2.0-liter will push the price up to $35,795, and bring all-wheel-drive and manual transmission options into play. The top-of-the-line ATS carries a $42,090 price tag and is powered by a version of the 3.6-liter V6 from the Cadillac CTS, rated at 320-hp and mated to an automatic tranny, with all-wheel-drive available.

While these prices are hard to evaluate without a full breakdown of standard equipment - which Cadillac promises in due time - we can compare them to two benchmarks, the all-new 2012 BMW 3 Series and the slightly larger CTS. While Caddy does undercut the base 3 Series price of $35,795, that entry-level ATS is down some 40 horsepower. The mid-priced ATS, the one with the turbo 2.0-liter, however, trumps the 328i's 240-hp engine by almost that much. With equivalent starting sticker prices, it only makes the inevitable head-to-head battle all that more interesting.

The CTS, however, starts at $36,810, which makes the top-level ATS seem spendy at first glance. Granted, the CTS is nearing the end of its life cycle, but clearly those looking for a more luxury-oriented, V6-powered sedan are going to have to closely study the standard equipment sheet to determine what justifies the $5,000-plus price premium for the smaller car.
