Fiat USA put a video showcasing the 500 Abarth on the Internet last November that tested the bounds of what is doable on network TV. That's one of the big reasons it hasn't been put on TV yet.

You'll see what we mean when you view the ad, titled "Seduction," after the jump. It was the foam that made it iffy for the networks.

But we chatted with Chrysler marketing chief Olivier Francois at the Detroit Auto Show about Super Bowl commercials where advertisers are known to push the envelope. In the Chrysler-Fiat world of double titles, Francois is also CEO of Fiat.

Francois, who is considering a few options for the big game, is wondering if the Abarth video is Super Bowl worthy, and wants to know what Autoblog readers think about the spot. Good enough for the big game, also known as the Super Bowl of advertising?

Chrysler, of course, was the toast of the Super Bowl in 2011, showing an unprecedented two-minute ad featuring Eminem's "Lose Yourself," an appearance by Eminem himself and the new ad theme, "Imported From Detroit."

It's a high bar to reach again.

What do you think? Does this Abarth ad have the right stuff?

The auto show mill is officially kicking into high gear for 2012, and Dacia has already shown off what we can expect from the company at this year's Geneva Motor Show in March. Fans of obscure European MPVs may now lick their chops at the first clear view of the Dacia Lodgy. The Romanian brand says its new vehicle will be available both in five- and seven-seat configurations when it debuts across Europe, though a final decision on whether or not a right-hand drive version will be offered has yet to be made.

Dacia isn't offering up any details on what's under the hood of the Lodgy, though with an overall length of under 15 feet, we'd be surprised to see anything other than a small-displacement four-cylinder humming along behind the headlights. Look for further details when the Lodgy debuts in March, but for now, check out our high-res gallery and hit the jump for the full press release.
Continue reading Dacia shows new Lodgy minivan ahead of Geneva debut

Dacia shows new Lodgy minivan ahead of Geneva debut originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 05 Jan 2012 11:31:00 EST.
Toyota was once the unquestioned lead sled dog when it comes to the Consumer Reports "Recommended" list, but the automaker and the consumer advocacy group have had a bit of a falling out over the past couple years. In 2010, the publication removed the Recommended ratings of many models as a result of Toyota's unintended acceleration controversy. In January Ford nearly overtook Toyota in overall Recommended ratings.

We're on the verge of a new year, and it appears that the Toyota is getting back on CR's good side. Bloomberg reports that the February issue of CR reveals that the 2012 Camry has scored the coveted tag. The non-profit lauded the Camry for its improved interior and fuel economy, along with an upgraded ride. The four-cylinder Camry averaged 27 miles per gallon during CR testing, tying the Hyundai Sonata for most efficient in the mid-size segment.

We're quite certain that the 2012 Camry would have sold like gangbusters whether or not it was Recommended by Consumer Reports. But at the same time, CR subscribers seem to really like their Toyota models, so it certainly helps to have a thumbs-up from the powerful publication.
2012 Toyota Camry gets Consumer Reports "Recommended" rating originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 30 Dec 2011 10:15:00 EST.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety announced today that 2012 model year vehicles set a record for the number of highly valued Top Safety Pick awards earned: 115 total winners with 18 of those being brand new recipients.

The break down includes 69 cars, 38 SUVs, five minivans and three pickups, so if owning a Top Safety Pick award-winning vehicle is important to you, there are options available in every category.

As for which automakers earned the most awards, Toyota and its band of merry brands, which includes Lexus and Scion, racked up 15, while GM was next with 14, VW/Audi with 13, and Ford/Lincoln and Honda/Acura both with 12 awards each. Speaking of Honda and Acura, they win the award for most improved, as 10 of the 18 new models to receive the award come from their lineups. No automaker, however, was able to match Subaru's repeat performance of earning a Top Safety Pick award for every vehicle in its lineup.

The IIHS notes that automakers have come a long way since it began giving out Top Safety Pick awards back in 2005. At that time, only 11 models qualified. In fact, last year only 66 vehicles qualified because of less-than-stellar rollover ratings, but automakers apparently responded, addressing the issue in new models or redesigning roofs throughout the year.

The IIHS Top Safety Pick award stands as the private sector's counterpart to the government's own five-star rating system for vehicle safety conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Both litmus tests for safety have grown increasingly difficult for automakers to ace in recent years, but today's announcement shows that they're clearly up to the task.
Continue reading IIHS reports record year for Top Safety Picks, 18 new 2012 models added

IIHS reports record year for Top Safety Picks, 18 new 2012 models added originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 15 Dec 2011 16:01:00 EST.
Porsche has finally officially unveiled its 2012 911 Carrera Cabriolet, and the model will boast the same sleek profile with its soft top in place as its hardtop twin for the first time in the vehicle's history thanks to a unique roof mechanism. The vehicle blends the aluminum and steel chassis of the standard 911 with a folding top manufactured from a slew of lightweight materials, including canvas magnesium and advanced high-strength steel to keep weight as low as possible. Porsche isn't saying exactly how many pounds engineers managed to shave from this vehicle compared to the previous generation, but the company assures us that the latest iteration is "significantly lighter." Sounds good.

With a 350-horsepower 3.4-liter flat six in the base 2012 Porsche 911 Cabriolet, the vehicle can scoot to 60 mph from standstill in as little as 4.4 seconds. The 911 Cabriolet S, meanwhile, can do the deed in 4.1 seconds thanks to its 400-horsepower 3.8-liter engine. Look to shell out $97,300 for the Carrera Cabriolet and $108,800 for the Carrera Cabriolet S. Hit the jump for an official video and the press release.
Continue reading 2012 Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet drops its innovative top [w/video]

2012 Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet drops its innovative top [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 22 Nov 2011 10:01:00 EST.
The BMW M5 has a long and rich performance history, and that resume only improves for 2012. With a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 pumping out 560 horsepower and an always-willing chassis underpinning it all, we can't wait to get behind the wheel.

Sadly we're a bit shy on the $92,000 needed to buy our own M5, so for now we'll settle for some stunning video and a melodious soundtrack. Hit the jump to hear the racy sounds emanating from the throaty M5, then stay for the sexy slow-motion drifts.
Continue reading Haven't heard the 2012 BMW M5 yet?
You can go ahead and tear down that poster of the Triumph Street Triple R. The 2012 MV Agusta Brutale 675 has officially debuted, and the bike promises to bring naked performance to a new level. Essentially a de-bodied F3 Supersport, the Brutale 675 packs 113 horsepower and tips the scales at a feathery 358 pounds dry.

MV Agusta has also equipped its naked warrior with a ride-by-wire system that boats four preset engine maps as well as a user-customizable tune. Eight-mode traction control is also part of the package.

The 675 cc three-cylinder engine utilizes some pretty trick engineering to offer buyers a more compact powerplant and improved handling at the same time. The engine's water and oil pumps are integrated into the cylinder and crank cases for a design that takes up less space than ever before, and a counter-rotating crankshaft helps reduce the bike's tendency to wheelie off the line.

In Europe, the 2012 MV Agusta Brutale 675 will set you back €8,990, which is around €100 cheaper than the equivalent Triumph. Read all about it in the press release after the break.
Continue reading 2012 MV Agusta Brutale 675 does naked the right way

2012 MV Agusta Brutale 675 does naked the right way originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 04 Nov 2011 16:30:00 EST.
Andy Richter is piloting a 2012 Chevrolet Sonic from Burbank, California to New York City as part of a stunt for Conan O'Brien's self-titled late night talk show. It's officially been one year since Team Coco found a home on TBS, and to celebrate, the entire Conan crew is packing up for a special performance at the Beacon Theater in the Big Apple. While the rest of the crew is turning to the miracle of commercial flight for the trip east - including O'Brien himself - Richter is saddling up in the newest compact from Chevrolet for a three-day road trip across the continent.

Hilarity is bound to ensue. The Team Coco site has been configured to allow viewers to follow along with Richter's big Sonic adventure, and the comedian will also be tweeting along the way to keep everyone abreast of his progress. Keep an eye out for tweets with the hashtag #orangebullet. In the meantime, hit the jump to see O'Brien sending Richter off yourself.
Continue reading Andy Richter on cross-country Chevy Sonic odyssey for Conan show

Andy Richter on cross-country Chevy Sonic odyssey for Conan show originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 28 Oct 2011 19:58:00 EST.
Auto sales have grown steadily since the U.S. and its auto industry performed a synchronized swan dive. But, unfortunately for automakers, those numbers have risen at a painfully slow pace.

The 'slow and steady' trend is likely to continue for the foreseeable future, but The Detroit News reports that both Ford and General Motors see continued sales increases in 2012. Ford economist Jenny Lin thinks that sales should progress beyond the 12.5 million to 13.5 million units forecasted for 2011. Lin added that a lack of new car sales over the last few years has led to a quickly aging fleet of vehicles on U.S. roads. In fact, the average vehicle on our roads is 10.6 years old, an all-time high.

GM chief economist Mustafa Mohatarem seems to agree, adding that demand is high and sales would be higher if Honda and Toyota could ramp up production. Mohatarem says the two Japanese automakers are still struggling to fill dealer lots in the wake of Japan's March earthquake and tsunami. As a consequence, he believes some buyers are sitting on the sidelines until they can pick up the Toyota or Honda of their choosing.

As for what the new yearly sales figure is projected to be, Mohatarem sees U.S. new vehicle sales hitting 16 million units as soon as 2014 or 2015.
Ford and GM think new vehicle sales will increase in 2012 originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 20 Oct 2011 11:31:00 EST.
We've never won a free car, but we bet it would be one helluva good feeling. But waiting a year for that very new ride? That has to be plenty painful. A year has passed since Oprah gave away 275 2012 Volkswagen Beetle models during her final "Favorite Things" episode, but those audience members didn't drive off the lot with their new ride. Since the Beetle was still a year away from production, audience members didn't even get to see what their new car looked like.

But while the wait was likely difficult, those lucky audience member are finally getting their high-five-inducing Bug. The Car Connection reports that the first 25 deliveries are taking place at a VW dealership in Orland Park, IL, and Volkswagen of America CEO Jonathan Browning will be present to hand over the keys. The remaining winners will reportedly receive their Beetle within the next few weeks.

As an added kicker to those 275 soon-to-be new Bug owners, the cash to take care of taxes and fees are also going to be provided. We're guessing the wait will be well worth the reward.
First batch of Oprah VW Beetle giveaway cars on the way originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 13 Oct 2011 10:31:00 EST.
Kawasaki has released a slew of images of the 2012 ZX-14R, a motorcycle that will feature new electronic enhancements, a reworked engine and slightly restyled bodywork for next year.

As reported by Asphalt & Rubber, the engine block will be stroked to 1,441cc and the cylinder head will be ported and polished for greater flow. In addition, the ZX-14R will make use of a higher compression ratio and new cam timing. No one's saying exactly how much power that will all add up to, but Kawasaki calls the bike the world's fastest-accelerating production motorcycle.

In addition to the reworked innards, the 2012 ZX-14R will also come packing traction control (sounds like a good idea...) for the first time as well as a throttle-by-wire system. The KTRC traction control system will offer the rider three different settings, all selectable from the handlebar and viewable from the gauge cluster. The bike will also features a few changes to the frame for a little more rigidity. Stay tuned for more details.
Kawasaki shows off 2012 ZX-14R, calls it world's fastest-accelerating motorcycle originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 11 Oct 2011 08:59:00 EST.
Toyota is considering moving production of the company's Korean-market Camry to the United States, according to Reuters. The move would take advantage of the free trade agreement between the U.S. and South Korea and put Toyota in a better position financially as the yen continues to strengthen.

The Korean-market Camry would be built alongside the U.S.-spec Camry in the automaker's Georgetown, Kentucky facility. Even with word that Toyota is mulling sending production outside of Japan, the company has said that it is still committed to keeping some manufacturing at home.

The Toyota Camry has enjoyed substantial success in South Korea, where it remains one of the most popular foreign-built vehicles in the country. Last year, Toyota sold around 4,200 Camry models in the South Korea. That represents a small figure compared to the 203,688 units produced at the Georgetown plant last year, but shifting production to the States could still pay large dividends for Toyota.
Toyota to move production of Korean-market Camry to America? originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 04 Oct 2011 11:28:00 EST.
Lexus has introduced a slew of 2012 special edition models, including unique variants of the LS 460, ES 350 and CT 200h. The rear-wheel-drive Lexus LS 460 Sport Special Edition offers buyers standard equipment that includes Brembo brakes, a sport-tuned air suspension and sport front seats in addition to 19-inch split-10-spoke wheels and a two-tone leather interior, among other amenities. Expect to hand over $77,000, excluding destination.

Meanwhile, the ES 350 Touring Edition comes laden with 17-inch 10-spoke wheels, a steering wheel and shift knob trimmed in leather and wood, navigation and saddle-tan leather heated and cooled seats. Additional equipment is also part of the package, and all that kit will bump the ES 350 Touring Edition MSRP to $40,475, excluding destination.

Finally, the CT 200h is getting the sport treatment as well with the F Sport Special Edition (seen above). The model is equipped with 17-inch alloy wheels of its own, along with an F Sport suspension that includes specific springs and sway bars. An F Sport appearance package is also along for the ride, and includes a mesh grille, larger rear spoiler, aluminum sport pedals and a perforated leather-trimmed steering wheel. Asking price? A cool $37,995. Lexus will politely ask for $875 for delivery on each model. Hit the jump for the press release.
Continue reading Lexus releases new ES, CT and LS special edition models

Lexus releases new ES, CT and LS special edition models originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 30 Sep 2011 15:45:00 EST.
Lotus has rolled out a new trailer for the company's Exige S. Those who are easily tired by flashy cuts and metaphor may want to skip this one, as it pits the supercharged V6 hellion against a boxer. No, not a Porsche or Subaru boxer engine. An actual boxer, as in, a pugilist.

Our brows may be a bit too low to understand the concept at work here, but we appreciate a good advertisement when we see one. With plenty of tire smoke, lots of doughnuts and dramatic shots of the black body work on the Exige S, the clip hits all the right notes.
The Lotus Exige S packs 346 horsepower in a 2,380-pound track-bred package. The supercharged 3.5-liter V6 mounted mid-ship delivers 295 pound-feet of torque. Given that the old Exige S could clip off 0-60 mph runs in the 4.1 second range, we wouldn't be surprised to hear that the 2012 model can do the deed in the high three-second range. Hit the jump to take a look at the video.
Continue reading 2012 Lotus Exige S squares off for The Duel

2012 Lotus Exige S squares off for The Duel originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 29 Sep 2011 19:59:00 EST.
It's easy to talk endlessly about unbelievably powerful cars, almost to the point that numbers become meaningless. In an effort to crystallize what 1,200 horses in a 2,685-pound car can do in the real world, we present a new video of the 2012 Hennessey Venom GT.

In the time it takes your wheezy Civic to go from 65 to 75 mph, the Venom GT has sprinted from 70 mph to a staggering 215 and is on its cool-down run. If you were to push hard enough with enough road, Hennessey says the Venom GT wouldn't stop until it hit 275 mph. Click past the jump to see the what the instrument cluster in the Venom looks like when you drop the hammer at 70 mph.
Continue reading How powerful is the Hennessey Venom GT?
We're all clamoring to get our greasy mitts on the new seven-speed manual transmission in the 2012 Porsche 911. Porsche has officially released a video of exactly how the gearbox works. As expected, engineers opted to use shorter ratios for gears one through six while leaving seventh gear nice and wide. That strategy is the same one employed in the company's optional PDK, and it essentially operates as a six-speed manual with a seventh gear over drive. Porsche says the design allows the 2012 911 to deliver buyers the acceleration and performance that the vehicle has come to represent while also serving up improved fuel economy.

The Porsche marketing machine calls the new manual "puristic," which, given the company's enthusiasm for the PDK, we assume to mean "dated." We're fine with that, though. We're not whipping the car around Le Mans, so Porsche can keep the faster-than-human shifts of the double-clutch box. We want our third pedal. Hit the jump to check out the video for yourself. Thanks for the tip, GT6!
Continue reading 2012 Porsche 911 gets shifty with 7-speed manual gearbox

2012 Porsche 911 gets shifty with 7-speed manual gearbox originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 05 Sep 2011 19:57:00 EST.
If you're itching for a way to motivate yourself to muddle through the holiday weekend after another week of stale coffee, dull meetings and overbearing management, look no further than the configurator for the 2012 Porsche 911. Clicking through the available options on the German sportscar provides some serious armor against the thought of abandoning all of your worldly possessions and adopting a life of vagrancy. Which color would look best lounging in your garage and breathing down someone else's neck at your local track day? Will you stick with a simple, single-color interior or go all-out for a two-tone, natural leather cockpit?

The questions are nearly endless. Your author is fairly smitten with the Lime Gold Metallic special color available on the 911 Carrera S, even with its $3,140 price tag. He'd even opt for $185 color center caps on our 20-inch rollers. Why not? Imaginary money is free, after all. Head over to Porsche to give yourself a little reminder about the obvious advantages of capitalism.
2012 Porsche 911 configurator makes for sweet dreams originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 02 Sep 2011 19:01:00 EST.
Mecum is set to auction off the very last Mitsubishi Eclipse ever produced at its Normal, Illinois plant.

The 2012 Eclipse Coupe packs the company's 3.8-liter V6 engine and is equipped with the SE package - the only car in the model's history to receive that combination. The Eclipse marks the end of 22 years of continuous production with Kalapana Black paint, 18-inch wheels and SE side graphics. The interior, meanwhile, is laden with leather seats, a 650-watt Rockford Fostgate sound system, rearview camera and HID headlights.

The very first Eclipse rolled off of the line in 1989, and 980,000 vehicles have carried the nameplate since then. That figure makes the Mitsubishi the best-selling Japanese sportscar of the past 20 years, according to Mecum.

The last Eclipse will be featured in the annual St. Charles Auction at the Pheasant Run Resort in St. Charles, Illinois. The auction is set to kick off on September 17 at 1:55 pm with no reserve, and Mitsubishi has promised to donate the proceeds of the sale to Japan's Red Cross. The event is open to the general public with a $15 entry fee. Hit the jump for the full press release.
Continue reading Mecum to auction final Mitsubishi Eclipse for charity

Mecum to auction final Mitsubishi Eclipse for charity originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 02 Sep 2011 17:31:00 EST.
We can quit wondering why it took so long for Jeep to drop the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 behind the round headlights of the 2012 Wrangler. According to Wards Auto, the engine had to undergo more than a few tweaks in order to be fit for duty in the trail-rated Wrangler. Engineers had to start by moving the alternator up and away from the middle of the engine to provide for greater water-fording capability. A new intake was also fitted to increase the kind of low-end torque buyers demand on the trail. Meanwhile, on-road civility was increased by changing the intake to draw from the engine's left side instead of its right along with a unique acoustic cover.
