As automakers are preparing to release sales figures for October, Toyota is looking a little further ahead by claiming that the Camry is the best-selling car in the US for the 11th straight year a full two months early. Based on sales figures through September, Toyota thinks that its 67,000-unit lead over the closest competitor is big enough to make a fourth-quarter comeback statistically impossible.

Camry sales are up about 37 percent through September with 314,788 units sold compared to 247,847 units for the next-closest car, the Honda Accord. The Accord would have to double the Camry's sales for the rest of the year in order to vie for the "best-selling car" title, and so far in 2012 Accord hasn't even been able to match the Camry's numbers. That being said, Automotive News does say that the stellar Camry's 2012 sales also include higher-than-normal fleet sales accounting for 15 percent of the total - or around 60,000 units-compared to 10 percent that the article states is where Camry fleet sales usually are. The Nissan Altima (234,040), Honda Civic (234,029) and Toyota Corolla (222,703) round out the top five cars of 2012 so far.

Next year will likely prove to be a little more challenging for the Toyota with redesigned midsize competitors such as the Ford Fusion, Altima, Accord, Chevrolet Malibu and Mazda6 all looking to put some added heat on the Camry - not to mention a substantially updated Civic will be hitting the scene as well.
Toyota claims best-selling car crown two months early originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 29 Oct 2012 10:30:00 EST.
There are plenty of great reasons to look forward to the upcoming three-day Labor Day weekend, but is a Toyota Camry one of them? While a special-edition Camry might not sound as exciting as the numerous parties or cookouts taking place this weekend, Toyota is giving its dealers a special way to celebrate with the new SE Sport Limited Edition added to the 2012 Camry line equipped with the four-cylinder engine.

Essentially, this car is a more attractive value package that combines a few popular options bundled together for a low(er) price. The 2012 Camry SE Sport Limited Edition will have a starting price of $25,995 (*not including delivery charges) which is about a $2,700 premium compared to the 2012 Camry SE. The package will include added equipment such as navigation, Toyota's Entune infotainment (a $2,405 option on its own), power sunroof and power driver's seat.

Toyota livened this package up a little more with exclusive features like the 18-inch, smoked-finish wheels and a Blizzard Pearl paint that will only be produced between September 12 through November 12. The Camry SE Sport that shoppers can find in dealers this weekend will come in Barcelona Red and Attitude Black.

How do doctors do it? How do they tell people that their loved ones are sick, afflicted, or even terminal? Sure, it's one thing to deliver bad news like a mechanic: "Your transmission's fried lady, that's gonna be three grand." But doctors need to be sensitive to the great anguish that will accompany their diagnosis. Nobody wants to find out that their formerly healthy family member isn't well, and a doctor's compassion is as important as his healing hand. The way the news gets delivered is crucial to how a patient, family and friends come to accept the situation and cope with treatment and its aftermath.

Can we then, get a doctor to write this review of the new Camry? Because after a week behind the wheel of the 2012 Toyota Camry SE V6, one thing is clear: This best-seller is ailing.

Now, we understand that the car is a veritable institution - there are presently some 40,000 people snapping up Camrys every month. And yes, for most of the car buying public, the new midsize Toyota will continue to provide safe and suitable, if unsurprising, transportation. By our estimation, however, there are at least two, probably three, maybe even four or five other midsize sedans offering a better overall package of price, performance and personality than Toyota's breadwinner. The short list starts with the Kia Optima and ends with the Hyundai Sonata, but the forthcoming Ford Fusion and Nissan Altima deserve their shots as well.
Continue reading 2012 Toyota Camry SE V6

2012 Toyota Camry SE V6 originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 18 Apr 2012 11:57:00 EST.
You know those Toyota commercials that we never get, the ones aired in distant lands like Australia and Brazil and that are, oh, interesting? We're finally getting one. Toyota is returning to Super Bowl advertising after a three-year hiatus with a 30-second version of this longer-form 60-second spot for the 2012 Camry, and we think it's amusing enough to be worthy of The Big Game.

This is a continuation of the reinvention theme introduced in the first 2012 Camry ad last year, and this commercial adds some comedy, a welcome change from Toyota's typically sober marketing campaigns. Toyota will also air a second 30-second spot during the NFL's championship game. Check it out in long form (along with the official press release) after the jump.
Continue reading Toyota returns to Super Bowl with "It's Reinvented!"
Toyota was once the unquestioned lead sled dog when it comes to the Consumer Reports "Recommended" list, but the automaker and the consumer advocacy group have had a bit of a falling out over the past couple years. In 2010, the publication removed the Recommended ratings of many models as a result of Toyota's unintended acceleration controversy. In January Ford nearly overtook Toyota in overall Recommended ratings.

We're on the verge of a new year, and it appears that the Toyota is getting back on CR's good side. Bloomberg reports that the February issue of CR reveals that the 2012 Camry has scored the coveted tag. The non-profit lauded the Camry for its improved interior and fuel economy, along with an upgraded ride. The four-cylinder Camry averaged 27 miles per gallon during CR testing, tying the Hyundai Sonata for most efficient in the mid-size segment.

We're quite certain that the 2012 Camry would have sold like gangbusters whether or not it was Recommended by Consumer Reports. But at the same time, CR subscribers seem to really like their Toyota models, so it certainly helps to have a thumbs-up from the powerful publication.
2012 Toyota Camry gets Consumer Reports "Recommended" rating originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 30 Dec 2011 10:15:00 EST.
For years Detroit automakers carped about the low value of the Japanese yen versus the U.S. dollar, but these days, the opposite is true. The yen has rocketed up in value versus the dollar, and Japan's automakers are taking significant measures to mitigate its bottom-line-killing effects. In October Toyota demanded lower prices from its Japanese supply base, and now the Camry will be built in the U.S. and shipped overseas.

Toyota notes in the post-jump press release that it will build 6,000 Toyota Camry units in Georgetown, Kentucky and ship the units to Korea. The massive Georgetown plant employs nearly 7,000 employees working around the clock. This marks the first time Toyota will export the American-made Camry, yet Toyota isn't new to U.S. exports. The automaker exports 100,000 vehicles built in the U.S. annually, shipping them to 19 countries.

The announcement is likely an exciting one for workers at the Georgetown plant, and Toyota feels more exports could be forthcoming. Toyota's North America President, Yoshimi Inaba, states "we look forward to other opportunities to continue growing exports from our American operations." Hit the jump to read over the press release.
Continue reading Kentucky-built Toyota Camry headed to South Korea

Kentucky-built Toyota Camry headed to South Korea originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 06 Dec 2011 18:00:00 EST.
Company: Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A.

Brand: Toyota

Medium: TV

Ad Agency: Saatchi & Saatchi, LA

Product: Toyota Camry

Campaign: It's Ready. Are You?

What We Like: What makes the Camry the right car for so many families is its overall competence in all aspects of everyday driving, and this advertisement does a good job of reminding consumers that the 2012 Camry has all the bells and whistles you could want while also managing to be safe (10 airbags) and efficient (43 miles per gallon for the hybrid).

There's a techy side to the ad, but it's not full of techno-babble and it comes across in an easy manner. Plus, the pooch at the end adds just the right amount of levity.

What We Don't Like: Not much. The ad hits all the major points Toyota wants to put into the minds of consumers, and does so in a clever way. As enthusiasts, we always love to see great driving footage and ad copy that focuses on the actual act of piloting a car, but that's really not what the Camry - and indeed most of this entire automotive segment - is all about.

Strategy: There isn't a single model that Toyota sells in the United States that's more crucial to its success than the mid-size Camry sedan. This car, along with the Corolla, is the machine that Toyota's stellar reputation for quality and reliability was built on.

Toyota needs to get the message out that the Camry is all new while also reminding everyone how great past Camry models have been for the car's intended segment, and it's hoping to do that with a campaign that stretches from radio and television to billboards and print media and straight on through to social networking. The company will also be putting on 125 events all around the country to put drivers in the seat of its latest Camry.

None of that even touches on all the bad press Toyota has gotten in the past few years for recalls and supposed safety concerns, and Toyota certainly wants to forget all about the dark days of its past. This campaign will look to put Toyota in a positive light again and the 2012 Camry is the car that will lead Toyota's hoped-for sales resurgence. For more on its overall strategy, hit the jump for a complete press release... but feel free to watch the video first.

Grade: A

The automaker saw its sales figures fall by 18 percent compared to the same time last year, thanks largely to lower-than-average dealer inventory brought on by this year's earthquake and tsunami disasters. Toyota sold 121,451 vehicles in the U.S. last month across its three brands. The company moved 147,162 vehicles during the month of September last year.

Even so, the automaker says that October will show sales improvements, according to Automotive News. Bob Carter, group vice president of Toyota Motor Sales, said that right now, U.S. dealers have a 30-day supply of vehicles, and that inventory will continue to grow in the coming months.

Carter also underscored the fact that his company would reverse a five-month trend of sales losses in October and once again post gains. That's likely to be true given that the 2012 Toyota Camry and Camry Hybrid are likely to bring in buyers as well as the company's Prius V.
Toyota is considering moving production of the company's Korean-market Camry to the United States, according to Reuters. The move would take advantage of the free trade agreement between the U.S. and South Korea and put Toyota in a better position financially as the yen continues to strengthen.

The Korean-market Camry would be built alongside the U.S.-spec Camry in the automaker's Georgetown, Kentucky facility. Even with word that Toyota is mulling sending production outside of Japan, the company has said that it is still committed to keeping some manufacturing at home.

The Toyota Camry has enjoyed substantial success in South Korea, where it remains one of the most popular foreign-built vehicles in the country. Last year, Toyota sold around 4,200 Camry models in the South Korea. That represents a small figure compared to the 203,688 units produced at the Georgetown plant last year, but shifting production to the States could still pay large dividends for Toyota.
Toyota to move production of Korean-market Camry to America? originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 04 Oct 2011 11:28:00 EST.
If we're honest, our memories of the Toyota Camry Solara aren't exactly fond. And as much as we'd like to look back on Toyota's Red Hat Society coupe and convertible through a pair of rose-tinted glasses, we'll be content with our currently Solara-less lives.

But now there's a new Camry, and a whole new world of possibilities. Is it possible that the Solara name (or, at least, form) could be resurrected? Automotive manipulator Theophilus Chin now offers this idea of what a two-door 2012 Camry could look like, and while it's decidedly more aggressive than any Solara that came before it, we still can't help but receive it with a resounding "meh."

Still, Honda sells the Accord Coupe, and Nissan offers a two-door version of the Altima, so there could be room in the market for a Camry coupe yet again. Hold on to your (red) hats.
2012 Toyota Camry Solara coupe imagined originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 07 Sep 2011 19:00:00 EST.
Toyota is allowing its North American teams a bit more freedom to build cars that best suit the market in which they work. Earlier in the year, Toyota announced that American designers would be more keyed in to model development, and now comes word that the automaker will no longer be importing Japanese-built Camry sedans into our market. Instead, starting with the 2012 Camry, the popular mid-size sedan will be built Stateside.

Toyota aims to sell 360,000 examples of the Camry per year. In order to produce enough units, Toyota will build the car at both its Georgetown, Kentucky plant and Subaru's assembly facility in Indiana. By building the Camry in the U.S., the automaker will be attempting to offset losses through dollar-yen exchange rates while also providing a boost to local production facilities.
Toyota to stop importing Camry models from Japan originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 07 Sep 2011 08:59:00 EST.
Automotive News is reporting that Nissan recently scored a hit against Toyota - at least in terms of social media marketing for the new 2012 Camry. When Nissan received word that Toyota was planning to pull back the sheet on the Camry last week, it reportedly set about snatching up promoted tweets featuring the words "Camry," "Toyota Camry," and "mid-sized car." A promoted tweet directs those searching for the terms toward a specific tweet instead of all tweets featuring the term for a 24-hour period. In this case, those looking for information on the Camry were pointed toward product news from Nissan.

At this point, it's unclear whether Nissan intentionally set out to scuttle Toyota's Twitter effort or if the two companies were merely giving each other some good-natured harassment. Either way, we can imagine Toyota will be a little more careful about protecting its search terms in the near future.
How Nissan outmaneuvered Toyota's Camry launch for Twitter supremacy originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 02 Sep 2011 11:30:00 EST.
Toyota Ukraine has released the skinny on what some other parts of the world can expect to see from the 2012 Toyota Camry. It's impossible for us to say who, besides Russia, will be getting this Camry variant, but we do clearly spot a front fascia that's a good bit different than what's available here in the land of the free. The lower air intake boasts a slimmer profile for less of an open-jaw look. Likewise, the rear valance has gone under the knife with additional detailing that abandons the rounded profile of the American car.

The final package may be a bit more refined in style, though mechanically the two sedans remain more or less identical. Buyers in the old country can lay their hands on the same engine options as their American counterparts. Those include a 2.5-liter inline four-cylinder good for 18 horsepower and a 3.5-liter V6 with a snappy 268 horsepower. Toyota calls the vehicle a "business sedan," and according to our Google translator, prices start at $33,050.
Toyota Ukraine reveals new Camry for other parts of the world originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 25 Aug 2011 19:30:00 EST. Toyota has finally pulled the wraps off its all-new 2012 Camry, and the marketing machine is now in full swing. The automaker is hitting the virtual airwaves with a trio of commercials highlighting its newest midsize sedan, as well as Toyota's love for NASCAR. Kyle Busch helps out with some smoky burnouts, high-speed driving and general information about the Camry Hybrid, and yes, that does seem a bit incongruous.

The first spot posted after the jump is titled "Electrified", and shows the NASCAR Camry turning donuts before being hit with some electricity and turning into a Camry Hybrid. The other two showcase Busch showing off for the camera. We can only hope no police were on the scene...

While Toyota competes with Ford, Chevy and Dodge on this country's NASCAR tracks, the pace cars leading them around have remained defiantly American - at least at Daytona, anyway. In the 50 years they've been running the Daytona 500, only once has the pace car been an import: the Porsche 914 that paced the race in 1971.

Apart from that one exception, it's been all Detroit - Pontiacs mostly, but also Buicks, Chevrolets, Dodges, Plymouths and Fords. But just as Toyota has rubbed and bumped its way up the field over the past decade plus of competition, it's now got one of its own up at the front as the official pace car for next year's race.

That's right. When the 2012 Daytona 500 kicks off the Sprint Cup season come February, it'll be the new 2012 Toyota Camry setting the pace. And while some may bemoan the use of an "import" for the task, Toyota would argue that nothing could be more American. After all, the Camry has been built in America (first in Georgetown, Kentucky, and now in Lafayette, Indiana) for 25 years now. And for 13 of the past 14 years, it's been the top selling car in America. So maybe, just maybe, the Toyota Camry has earned the honor.
Continue reading 2012 Toyota Camry chosen as Daytona 500 pace car

2012 Toyota Camry chosen as Daytona 500 pace car originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 23 Aug 2011 15:28:00 EST.
We've just given you our first impressions of the redesigned 2012 Toyota Camry. Now, Toyota is ready to give you pricing, and it's good news if you're in the market for this mid-size mainstay. Pricing stays the same for some of the 2012 trims, while it's actually gone down for a few others. The 2012 Camry family hierarchy shakes out with the base-model L before moving up to the LE, XLE and SE trims. The Camry Hybrid is only available in LE or XLE guise.

Pricing for the 2012 Camry L starts at $21,995. If you want to move up to the LE, you only need $545 more for a total of $22,500, which is about $200 less than the 2011 LE. Another $500 brings you to the four-cylinder-equipped Camry SE, which costs $23,000 and is priced $965 lower than the 2011 model it replaces. The V6 SE will cost $26,400, which is consistent with 2011 pricing. In the market for the top-shelf XLE? Have at least $24,725 ready for the four-cylinder model, and $29,845 if you prefer the V6. The 2012 Camry XLE four-cylinder is priced a full $2,000 less than the 2011 model, while the XLE V6 remains priced the same as the 2011.

If you're leaning towards the 2012 Toyota Camry Hybrid, you'll be saving $1,150 over the 2011 Camry LE. The 2012 Camry Hybrid LE starts at $25,900, while the Camry Hybrid XLE starts at $27,400, an $800 deduction compared to the 2011 unit.
Continue reading 2012 Toyota Camry pricing good news for those shopping in mid-size market

2012 Toyota Camry pricing good news for those shopping in mid-size market originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 23 Aug 2011 14:29:00 EST.
Toyota has manufactured and sold 15 million Camry models across 100 countries since it debuted way back in 1983. It's a number that's nearly unfathomable. If all of those polite four-doors were still roaming the earth, there'd be one for every man, woman and child in Virginia, Maryland and Washington D.C. combined, and you'd still have a almost a million vehicles left over. Even more eye-widening is Toyota's claim that of the Camry models built and sold over the last 15 years, 90 percent are still happily enduring a daily commute on nearly every corner of the planet. By sheer volume and longevity, the Camry is nothing short of an engineering and manufacturing wonder.

Almost by default, the Camry has grown to become the vehicle by which all other mid-sized creations must measure themselves, and over the past two years, Ford, Hyundai, Kia and Volkswagen have unveiled products designed specifically to lure buyers from the Toyota model's swollen ranks. In response, Toyota City has turned out the seventh-generation Camry - a model that's been altered with blink-and-you'll-miss-it delicacy. But as millions of current Camry owners will tell you, that may not be a bad thing.
Trying to keep a floodgate closed is no easy task. Just ask any automaker releasing embargoed images of a new car coming out. When it's something as prolific as a new Toyota Camry, it's bound to get out like water through cracked concrete. We could go on about the edgier styling of this latest rendition of the longstanding best-selling vehicle in America, but we'd just as soon let you see it for yourself.
