2012 Lamborghini Aventador - front three-quarter view against green wall

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has issued a bulletin over a recall for up to 144 examples of the 2012 Lamborghini Aventador here in the States. The affected models, built from July 15, 2011 to April 20, 2012 have headlights that apparently don't conform to US federal motor vehicle safety standards. The lamps can be aimed horizontally but not vertically, which can reduce their usefulness for the driver and blind oncoming traffic if aimed improperly.

Lamborghini is expected to begin notifying affected owners next week, at which time they can take their Aventadors to their dealers for a fix free of charge. The complete bulletin from NHTSA is below.

1,000th Lamborghini Aventador built with new owner and Lambo CEO

They're lifting glasses of bubbly in Bologna today as Lamborghini celebrates the Aventador reaching a significant milestone in its young history: 1,000 units produced. The 1,000th Aventador is painted Argos Orange and destined for Germany, where it will share space in Bavarian architect Hans Scheldecker's garage with a Diablo.

What's most impressive is that Lamborghini's latest supercar has reached that milestone after only 15 months of production. It took the Aventador's predecessor, the Murciélago, nearly three years to convince 1,000 customers to buy into the Lamborghini lifestyle, and that supercar went on to sell just 4,099 units during its nine-year run.

Credit the operating efficiencies of the Volkswagen Group, Lamborghini's parent company, for teaching the niche automaker how to build excellence at scale. According to Lamborghini, last year the Sant' Agata Bolognese plant's rate of productivity was three Aventadors per day, and today it's up to 4.5. The Aventador, however, has a long way to go beat Lamborghini's all-time best-seller, the Gallardo, which built its 10,000th copy in 2010 and is fast approaching the 12,000 mark.

Lamborghini Aventador with F16 Fighting Falcon in hanger

The Lamborghini Aventador is one of the quickest and fastest supercars on the market today, but does it have what it takes to beat a fighter jet? And not just any jet, but an F-16 Fighting Falcon, perhaps the most iconic plane flown by the U.S. Air Force? Danish auto rag Bilmagasinet (literally translated as "car magazine") aimed to answer this question, and brought both vehicles to an active air field to find out whether or not this bull could beat a little old bird.

All we have to go on is their well-produced YouTube video, but from the footage we can see the Aventador more than holds its own in a straight drag race with the fighter plane. Once the Falcon takes flight, however, the Lamborghini gets left behind.

This stunt was of course performed by Richard Hammond back in 2007 with a Bugatti Veyron and Eurofighter Typhoon jet on Top Gear. We're no experts on military jets, but the Eurofighter is a much newer design than the F-16 Fighting Falcon and we suspect a much tougher opponent to face across the Christmas Tree of a makeshift drag strip. As such, the Veyron, today's current king of super cars, was no match for the Typhoon.

Lamborghini Aventador spy shot crash

Being a spy shooter is tough work. It's all about being in the right place at the right time, hoping to train one's lens on a glimpse of verboten sheetmetal. We know from our colleagues that it's hard enough to just catch a blurry glimpse of a distant mule when the quarry doesn't want to be photographed, making this series of photos from our friends at CarPix that much more remarkable.

Not only have they captured a Lamborghini Aventador cold weather testing in the frigid Arctic Circle, their shutters were snapping as the test driver lost control and went sailing through an intersection and into a snowbank, documenting the crash frame-by-frame. Fortunately for all those involved, the snow wasn't packed too hard and both driver and Lamborghini emerged miraculously unscathed.

Apparently not happy with his good fortune, CarPix reports that "the driver then leaped out of the car, nearly falling down in the process, and came at our photographer in a fairly aggressive manner."

Thankfully, the embarrassment and anger was short-lived, as a winch-equipped Audi A6 Allroad came to the rescue. Seeing that his nearly $400,000 test subject was unharmed, the driver apparently cooled off enough to give our man a thumbs up before going on his way.

A Lamborghini Murcielago SV and Aventador have come together for one expensive and powerful photo shot. More like an aging master has come face to face with the newest stud from the family farm. The man behind the lens is Jordan Shiraki from Lamborghini Las Vegas, and his work has been featured on Autoblog in the past. Previously, we saw Shiraki capture the first Aventador to arrive on U.S. soil, and now he has once again teamed up with Sin City's most bullish dealership for a new set of impressive images.

The two roaring bulls are shown in rare quiet moments, and the family resemblance isn't hard to find. The wedge shape of each Italian exotic is pronounced, and each has its own aspects of over-the-top styling from the land shaped like a boot. For instance, gaping side vents pop out ahead of the massive rear fenders on the Aventador, while a deep side sill and park bench-sized rear wing are proof of the high-performance possibilities afforded with the Murcielago.

Each is striking in its own way, and the Lamborghini flagship torch has officially been passed to a worthy successor. Check out the photo shoot in the gallery.

The 2012 Lamborghini Aventador has officially arrived in the United States, and we're not sure if it arrived by boat or simply left the ground and flew across the Atlantic (it could do that, you know). Jordan Shiraki (ShirakiPhoto), working for Lamborghini Las Vegas and eGarage.com, was the lucky lensman who got to spend time with the newest angry bull. Shiraki scored the exclusive photo shoot, and we're happy to share the photos, which can be viewed the attached high-res image gallery.

We think Europe has had enough time to play with the car, and we look forward to more video and photography of the Aventador having fun here in the States. For now, Shiarki's shots will help satiate our Lambo desires.

While it's not as fun to play with as the Bugatti Veyron configurator or even the Novitec Rosso 458 Italia configurator, the Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4 web toy is up and running. Sadly, all you can do is pick exterior and interior color combinations, meaning the build-your-own Aventador site isn't as much of a time-waster as we'd like it to be as you'd think.

We decided to go with Giallo Orion, a pearl yellow color, for our Aventador. A supercar should be bright and obnoxious, and this paint scheme certainly does the job. However, if you are feeling sinister, there is a matte black color option called Nero Nemesis, but if you opt for that stealthy color, you should just go ahead and change your name to Bonda... Giacomo Bonda. Head over to the Aventador website and paint the Lambo of your dreams now. Thanks to everyone for the tips!
