Lamborghini recalls Aventador over headlamp problem

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has issued a bulletin over a recall for up to 144 examples of the 2012 Lamborghini Aventador here in the States. The affected models, built from July 15, 2011 to April 20, 2012 have headlights that apparently don't conform to US federal motor vehicle safety standards. The lamps can be aimed horizontally but not vertically, which can reduce their usefulness for the driver and blind oncoming traffic if aimed improperly.

Lamborghini is expected to begin notifying affected owners next week, at which time they can take their Aventadors to their dealers for a fix free of charge. The complete bulletin from NHTSA is below.

Impracticality comes in many shapes and sizes, and that's as true in automotive terms as it is anywhere else. Consider this: Depending on a series of lifestyle choices, a Honda Civic could prove just as useless for one man as a Ford F450 Super Duty would for another.

If there's one segment of the auto market where being practical means absolutely nothing, though, it's supercars. When the goal is blitzing a race track, laying down a thick coating of rubber or attracting members of the opposite sex, the number of grocery bags that can fit in the trunk is completely beside the point.

The boys from Hot Rod decided to put impracticality to the ultimate test by pitting a vintage 1930 Ford Model A rat rod against a 2012 Lamborghini Aventador in a series of tests over a period of 24 hours. Lamborghini Aventador named Robb Report Car of the Year

The luxury vehicle aficionados at Robb Report have chosen the Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4 as their 2012 Car of the Year. This is the 19th time the magazine has announced a COTY award, and any vehicle introduced in the previous year (in this case, that'd be 2011) is eligible.

The Lamborghini was one of a dozen vehicles singled out by Robb Report for consideration, and it managed to edge out such competitors as the Maserati GranTurismo MC, Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster and Audi A7 (listed in the order they finished).

Robb Report praised the Lamborghini Aventador for the ease with which it allows drivers to access its prodigious performance and for its technically sophisticated seven-speed gearbox. Two-thirds of the 100 voters chose the Aventador as their first-place pick, making it the runaway victor. Feel free to read the press release after the break.

Watch a twin-turbo Lamborghini Gallardo race an Aventador

There's no doubt a stock Lamborghini Gallardo doesn't have the guts to go toe-to-toe with its more powerful sibling, the Aventador. But make no mistake: That's nothing a couple massive turbochargers can't fix.

The twin turbos come courtesy of Heffner Performance, and they turn the Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera into a monster with more than 600 horsepower force fed through the V10 engine and to all four wheels. For the sake of comparison, the naturally aspirated Aventador offers up 691 horsepower straight from the factory.

There's no data on which Heffner kit this Gallardo has been fitted with, so we can't say exactly how many horses it's hiding underhood - it could be as many as 1200. At any rate, after watching the video, all we know is that it's more than 691. See for yourself... and keep the racing confined to the racetrack, please.

Here's your official spoiler alert warning, as the following video is taken from a Top Gear episode that has yet to air on this side of the Atlantic.

Top Gear tests automobiles that are pure dream fuel for the average enthusiast. The Top Gear Test Track has pushed truly tenacious machines to the limit courtesy of both the trio of presenters and, of course, The Stig. Since Lamborghini has a new big bull, it was only a matter of time before the largest Lambo arrived on the set of the world's greatest motoring show.

Richard Hammond is up first, and his date with the Aventador goes rather swimmingly. After he gets a shot in the control seat, the Stig has the chance to run the Lamborghini around the track. We're smitten with the 2012 Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4 - the Italian automaker's latest hotness. And while it's no secret that crafting the V12-powered supercar is no easy task, the folks at Lamborghini want to show the world just how much attention to detail and quality craftsmanship goes into the production of each Aventador.

To create the new supercar, Lamborghini started with sketches, transferred those drawings to a computer, began testing the materials used to craft the car and then work to build the twelve-cylinder heart found just behind the passenger compartment. It's an intense process, and the end result is a car that will no doubt go down in history as one of the greatest Lamborghini products ever made. Follow the jump to watch the video for yourself.

In yet another happy chapter of our lives, we've been among the first to hop in the year's most hotly anticipated exotic, the 2012 Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4. After the super sport's debut at this year's Geneva Motor Show in March, plus some previous prototype drives while still in camouflage, all that remained was the tell-all day behind its wheel on a hot circuit. We survived. And the seat of our pants is permanently creased by the Aventador's electrifying, world-conquering performance.

It's about time that Lamborghini put its V12 model front-and-center again, and this is what the four-year development of the Aventador has been all about. Only at the very start of its life did the Murciélago ever garner this type of attention. Once its Gallardo V10 sibling was launched, the poor old Murc didn't take it so well and lived deep in the shadows of Lambo's popstar "people's car." Continue reading...

Fitting, then, that our European Editor Matt Davis has descended upon the historic Italian city to drive the latest Lamborghini supercar.

Lamborghini Aventador configurator goes live

While it's not as fun to play with as the Bugatti Veyron configurator or even the Novitec Rosso 458 Italia configurator, the Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4 web toy is up and running. Sadly, all you can do is pick exterior and interior color combinations, meaning the build-your-own Aventador site isn't as much of a time-waster ~~as we'd like it to be~~ as you'd think.

We decided to go with Giallo Orion, a pearl yellow color, for our Aventador. A supercar should be bright and obnoxious, and this paint scheme certainly does the job. However, if you are feeling sinister, there is a matte black color option called Nero Nemesis, but if you opt for that stealthy color, you should just go ahead and change your name to Bonda... Giacomo Bonda. Head over to the Aventador website and paint the Lambo of your dreams now. Thanks to everyone for the tips!

Lamborghini's fifth generation V12 supercar made its official debut in Geneva, and while we've already detailed every aspect of the Aventador LP700-4 in our in-depth article we published yesterday, today we finally had the opportunity to get some first person impressions of the latest Raging Bull.

Lamborghini had three Aventadors on display, ranging from the bright orange example we first saw in the studio photos to a more subtle grey and a stunning matte white. The white, in particular, shows off the various styling elements of the exterior, especially the muscular creases on the front and sides. Despite having more complex lines, the Aventador still manages to have a cleaner look than some of the later generation Murcielagos. We snagged a few minutes inside, and the quality of materials is proof that Lamborghini is continuing to benefit the Volkswagen Group's influence.

Everything You Need To Know About Italy's New Raging Bull

Before the Geneva Motor Show press conference on Tuesday, Lamborghini let us in on a private Bologna-area photography studio so that we could get our own sex-machine shots of their raging new V12 firestarter, the 691-horsepower Aventador LP700-4.

First off, we're glad they didn't call it 'Jota' as some were peas-and-carroting about because it's just a silly and unpronounceable name. It probably belonged to some wimpy minor league bull, too. Only one true Jota was ever built in 1970, and it was a just an amped-up and flared Miura (we prefer not to think about the mid-90s Diablo anniversary upgrade kits).

"Aventador" was, according to the best detective work we can muster, a bull whose career peaked in 1993 in the town of Saragozza, Spain, when he and the torero had a particularly spirited encounter prior to ol' Aventador's inevitable skewering. This particular beastie belonged to the breeding stables of the sons of Don Celestino Cuadri Vides and, for unknown reasons surely banal, he bore the number 32 singed on his hide. And now he gets the strongest Lamborghini ever built named after him. And about damned time! The British were getting tired of mispronouncing "Murcièlago" over the past ten years and now they have a new proper name to mutilate.
