2012 Hyundai Veloster - front three-quarter view, white

Back in December, Hyundai issued a recall affecting some 13,500 Veloster hatchbacks because their optional panoramic sunroofs could possibly shatter while the vehicle is in motion. Now, an expansion of that recall has been announced, with an additional 6,071 units of the 2012 model year hatchback figuring in to the problem.

The original recall covered cars built between November 1, 2011 and April 17, 2012, but this expansion concerns vehicles built from July 4, 2011 to October 31, 2011. Just like before, the official National Highway Traffic Safety Administration bulletin states that these vehicles may be fitted with sunroofs that were inadvertently weakened during installation, and thus, can possibly break while the vehicle is in motion.

This second sunroof recall is expected to kick off next month. Dealers will inspect the sunroofs in these affected vehicles and will replace the whole assembly if necessary, free of charge. Scroll down to read the full NHTSA report.

2012 Hyundai Veloster - white - front three-quarter view

A spate of not-great news for Hyundai Veloster owners today, as the plucky hatchback is the subject of not one, but two recall notices from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The first recall is about an issue with the 2012 Veloster's sunroof assembly that we first reported on last October. A NHTSA probe into shattering panoramic glass has resulted in a recall affecting some 13,500 units that may have glass panels that were weakened during installation at the factory. Said glass may break while the vehicle is in motion.

The second recall specifies a problem with the parking brake in 4,490 manual-transmission cars, also from the 2012 model year. The parking brakes in these cars may pick up moisture and road grime, which could, in turn, cause the brake components to bind and not fully engage.

In both cases, Hyundai will notify owners of recalled vehicles and inspect and replace defective parts free of charge. Both recalls will begin during January 2013. Scroll below for both official recall notices from NHTSA.

Hyundai Veloster Convertible rendering - Theophilus Chin

The Hyundai Veloster has been a bit polarizing since it went on sale last year. And the debate could get more animated if the Korean company does what we think it's thinking about doing.

At a recent gathering of reporters and Hyundai executives in Ann Arbor, MI, where the annual Rolling Sculpture Car Show takes place every summer, we asked Hyundai Motors America chief John Krafcik what he planned to bring this year (the college town is also home to Hyundai America Technical Center). Last year, they showed off the new Veloster.

Redone Azera? New Santa Fe? Neither seems appropriate for the tone of the event. So, we threw this out: "How about chopping the top off the Veloster and see the reaction?"

Krafcik and PR man Jim Trainor started trying to make poker faces, indicating to us that we may well have stumbled on to a future project, Rolling Sculpture or no. But we aren't sure.

Some thought the Veloster was an answer to a question that nobody had been asking, but the unique coupe is proving to be a great sales and image success for Hyundai. Krafcik has shown a great instinct for design and engineering the Hyundai lineup to successful heights: redesigns of the Sonata, Elantra, Accent and now Santa Fe. He also had a lot to do with the cleanup of the Azera, and, of course, the Genesis and Genesis Coupe. A former product development executive at Ford, it's hard to think he would not be the current product development chief in Dearborn had he stayed, and not been scooped up by Hyundai a decade ago.

Hyundai's sales have been supply constrained on many of its models, including the Veloster. Given a finite supply of Veloster models that it can source from Korea, Krafcik plans to emphasize production of the upcoming Turbo model. That strikes us as a smart move.

We're excited about the turbo, but we couldn't resist asking a rendering artist to imagine the Veloster sans roof. What do you think? Is topless a good thing in this case?

And This Time, It's Personal

2012 Hyundai Veloster

In order to understand this review of the 2012 Hyundai Veloster, you first need to understand a bit about me. I'm a mid-twenty-something urbanite. My closet is full of obscure band t-shirts, striped hooded sweatshirts and Converse. My black-framed glasses match my messy dyed black hair. I go to a lot of concerts starring bands you've never heard of, I drink Pabst Blue Ribbon at dive bars that I 'check in' to on Facebook. Every photo I take has an Instagram filter. My Twitter feed is one big sarcastic abyss.

I'll sheepishly admit to being sort of a hipster, only without the Arcade Fire shirt and stupid mustache.

More to the point, I look like I stepped right out of a commercial for the Hyundai Veloster. All of the smiling, energetic folks pictured in the brochure at the dealership? They could pass as my friends.

It's no secret that Hyundai's new hatch is aimed squarely at my demographic - the always-connected scenester who works hard and plays harder. But does this new Veloster adequately meet the demands of my lifestyle? Forget about the fact that I'm an enthusiast first and a consumer second. If I had to go out and buy a new car tomorrow, would the Hyundai dealership be my destination?

This isn't really shocking news - we've known that Hyundai has been working on a turbocharged version of its new Veloster for quite some time - but it's nice to have official confirmation directly from CEO John Krafcik on the company's Twitter account and via a live announcement at SEMA. The highly anticipated 2013 Veloster Turbo will debut at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show in January, reportedly alongside a refreshed Genesis Coupe.

The Veloster Turbo will - surprise, surprise - be powered by Hyundai's new 1.6-liter inline four-cylinder engine that was recently announced in Korea. That engine's previously announced spec is 204 horsepower - 66 more horsepower than the standard Veloster's naturally aspirated inline four. Assuming the model gets some other upgrades along with it, the turbocharged hatchback should be a pretty enthusiastic steer.

As for the updated Genesis Coupe, Car and Driver says that Krafcik has confirmed the base 2.0-liter turbo-four and naturally aspirated 3.8-liter V6 will get power increases (the V6 will likely get the same 333-hp treatment that the 2012 Genesis sedan received), and from the spy shots we've seen, we can expect the coupe's styling to be more akin to that of the smaller Veloster. We'll have the full details come January.

The 2012 Hyundai Veloster has plenty of hot hatch potential, but its frugal, 1.6-liter, direct-injected four-cylinder just isn't going to cut it for those more concerned with speed than fuel economy. While a turbo model has long been rumored, we've now got confirmation - sort of.

While Hyundai hasn't said anything official about the turbo Veloster, it has unveiled a new turbocharged 1.6-liter engine at a conference in Korea this week. Hyundai says it spent 52 months and over $60 million developing the new mill, which meets California's ULEV-2 and Euro 5 standards.

The 204-horsepower Gamma four-cylinder gets its extra 66 horses thanks to a twin-scoll turbocharger and an air-to-air intercooler. The turbo, which is integrated into the exhaust manifold, also boosts the Gamma's torque to a tire-squealing 195 lb-ft.

With a curb weight of just 2,600 pounds, the Veloster could be quite a pocket rocket with this engine fitted underhood. Let's hope a limited-slip differential is also in the cards.

We expect some sort of official announcement from Hyundai regarding the Veloster Turbo as early as November 1 at SEMA. To read the release announcing the new turbo engine, click through the jump.

ARK Performance Hyundai Veloster

After our first drive of the Hyundai Veloster, we described the three-door hatch as an 'eco-sport' rather than an 'all-out performance car'. The 1.6-liter four-pot under the hood produces 138 horsepower and 123 pound-feet torque, which provided 'adequately entertaining' acceleration. In other words, we wouldn't mind one bit if the Veloster got an extra dose of power.

The folks over at ARK Performance were thinking the same thing, and are set to debut a custom Veloster at SEMA in November with an extra dose of oomph under the hood. The additional ponies - 210 in total - comes courtesy of intercooled turbocharger system and a high-flow exhaust system. ARK has also worked over the rest of the Veloster with six-piston front brakes, coilover suspension system, custom Alcantara interior and a widebody kit with green and grey graphics.

You now live in a world in which the Hyundai Veloster is actively being sold. The first example has just been delivered, and the owner, one Daniel Jenkins, picked up his new Veloster at a Henderson, Nevada Hyundai dealership as soon as it rolled of the truck. You'll surely soon be spotting examples of the 138-horsepower four-door hatchback on a road near you in the near future.

We recently spent a bit of time behind the wheel of the 2012 Veloster, and based on our observations, we're confident that Mr. Jenkins will be getting a load of stares on his daily commute - after all, the Veloster is a rather unique looking beast, no matter what exterior shade you opt for.

And Now For Something Completely Different...

2012 Hyundai Veloster

To hear John Krafcik tell it, the 2012 Veloster is just another Hyundai. Allow us to rephrase that. According to the company's North American CEO, the searing Vitamin C orange coupe shown here is something we should've seen coming, the predictable end result of the relentless innovators at his Korean employer.

Yet to be fair, even now, "innovation" isn't exactly the first thing that comes to mind when we think of Hyundai. But perhaps it should be. After all, this is the same company that's led the way with radical customer relations plans like Hyundai Assurance (income loss payment coverage and buy-back, guaranteed trade-in values, etc.) and brash products like the 2011 Sonata, which passed on cylinders five and six in favor of forced induction - to say nothing of its unique hybrid variant and brave aesthetics. From marketing to product, Hyundai has rather quietly built a solid case for itself as an innovator.

And yet... even though we knew it was coming, we still weren't prepared for the Veloster. Aggressive family sedan styling aside, we haven't seen Hyundai allow its design team to so comprehensively stretch its creative legs as we have in this little four-door coupe. Did we say four-door? Indeed we did. Following hatchback naming conventions of three- and five-door bodystyles, this tangerine bolide is actually a four-door. It's got a conventional, longish driver's side door and a traditional lift-up hatchback. But stroll over to the passenger's side, and things get deeply funky - there's a second aperture behind a subtly shorter front door. We've seen similar setups like this in the past, a rear-hinged demi-door to ease access to a tight back seat, but this isn't a suicide solution. The Veloster employs a normal front-hinged rear door, albeit one with the handle hiding in the gloss black C-pillar.

After tons of hype, the 2012 Hyundai Veloster finally has its own configurator on Hyundai's website. The 138-horsepower hatch comes with your choice of a six-speed row-your-own-or a six-speed dual-clutch automatic cog box.

The three-door hatch clocks in just over $22,000 when you opt for the style and tech packages and the manual trans. Go for top banana with the DCT trans, and you'll be asked to shell out just north of $23K. For that you get premium sound, 18-inch wheels, a panoramic sunroof, alloy pedals, piano black interior trim, navigation, proximity entry, push-button start and backup sensors, and that doesn't cover all of it.

2012 hyundai veloster

It's a great time to be a fan of small cars, and Hyundai is nearly ready to add its 2012 Veloster into the marketplace. If you've been waiting for this one to appear in your local showroom, we've got some news for you. Hyundai Motor America President and CEO John Krafcik just tweeted that it's going to cost you $17,300 for a Veloster. Full pricing is due later this week, but that base price undercuts the Honda CR-Z, arguably its most natural rival, by over $2,000, while offering more room and the promise of 40 miles-per-gallon on the freeway.

UPDATE: Hyundai has released full pricing/specifications on the 2,582-pound 2012 Veloster. Pricing is $17,300 plus $760 for destination charges. Major options include the paddleshift dual-clutch gearbox at $1,250; Style package with 18-inch alloys, panoramic roof, premium audio and leatherette ($2,000); and Tech Package with unique 18-inch alloys, navigation with rearview camera, proximity key and pushbutton start ($2,000 and requires Style pack). Quoted fuel economy figures are 28/40/32 mpg with the six-speed manual and 29/38/32 with the dual-clutch. Deliveries commence in September. Hyundai may be working on a more traditional five-door hatch version of the company's new Veloster. The Australian site Car Sales Network recently spoke to Eunjuu Shin, the manager for overseas product planning for Hyundai, who said that his company is working on a Veloster with four doors for global markets. Other suits within the Korean automaker have neither confirmed nor denied the news, saying that right now, the manufacturer is focused on the launch of the two-plus-one door configuration.

So, how likely is it that Hyundai is working on a five-door Veloster? On the one hand, a slightly more functional version of the vehicle might appeal to more buyers, though with the same 1.6-liter direct-injection four-cylinder as the Accent, we could easily imagine too much product overlap between the two siblings. The Veloster is set to touch down in the United States later this year, so don't expect to hear too much more about a five-door version until well after the vehicle's launch date.

"How about a ride in the Veloster?"

While the experience falls seriously short of taking a few orbits in the Space Shuttle, those seven words were enticing enough to motivate us to cross the dreaded Los Angeles basin during rainy rush-hour traffic last week. The Veloster is Hyundai's latest addition to a rapidly expanding lineup that now encompasses everything from the modest $12,000 Accent to the Lexus-fighting $58,000 Equus. The new hatchback - uniquely configured with one driver door and two passenger doors - is parked on the low end of the model range, promoted as a compact coupe offering fun-to-drive chassis dynamics, a long list of standard innovative technology and hybrid-beating fuel economy in one cool-looking package.

Hyundai isn't letting anyone drive the Veloster yet, but like proud parents, they are more than willing to show us around the car, from top to bottom, and take us for an extensive drive around the block - as passengers.

However, this isn't just a simple low-level meet-and-greet, as our host will be John Krafcik, CEO of Hyundai Motor America. Understandably, we had a slew of questions swirling around our minds before our ride: How comfortable is the cabin? Do tall adults fit in the second row? What does the engine sound like? How does it handle? Lastly, why does everyone keep comparing the new Veloster to the old Honda CRX?

We haven't been behind the wheel of one yet, but we're thinking that the normally aspirated 2012 Hyundai Veloster probably looks a little faster than it is - we say this only because a 1.6-liter four-cylinder with 138 horsepower can only be so spirited. We've heard previously that a turbocharged version of the Veloster is on the way, but thus far, details haven't been easy to come by.

If several new stories in Hyundai forums are to be believed, the Veloster Turbo will feature a 1.6-liter GDI turbo powerplant capable of 208 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 195 pound-feet of torque at 5,000 rpm. That's not exactly game-changing power, but keep in mind that the little Veloster weighs all of 2,600 pounds, giving the little coupe a 12.48-pounds-per-pony ratio. And if the Veloster Turbo does indeed feature the 1.6-liter, we're thinking the little ride's laudable 40 mile per gallon highway fuel economy bogey won't be affected all that much.

A 208-horsepower Veloster sounds just dandy to us, but we're still looking forward to official word from Hyundai to confirm. Hopefully we'll hear something more official about the boosted Veloster very soon.

Throughout 2010, Hyundai teased us with shots of its unconventionally sporty new three-door. Thankfully, we finally got to see the 2012 Hyundai Veloster in its production skin at the 2011 Detroit Auto Show. Now comes a brand-new image to further tantalize us. Wearing Red Bull Racing colors, this rally-prepped Veloster has been captured mid-flight.

We don't have all of the details on this rally-ready Hyundai Veloster to devulge just yet, but we can confirm that we're dying to know more. Set your calendars for February 9, 2011 at 9:45am CST because that's when Hyundai will make good with more information. Also, be sure to tune in to our 2011 Chicago Auto Show coverage, because word on the tarmac, gravel and snow-covered street is that this mighty Veloster is hopping a plane to Chi-town... after it eventually touches down from this jump.

B-roll footage isn't necessarily the most exciting visual or aural experience, but it allows us to see new production models strutting their stuff out on the road. Hyundai is wasting no time in getting the B-roll footage out of the recently debuted 2012 Veloster, and here we see a pair of brightly-colored three-door coupes mixing it up on a desert test track.

Hyundai's funky, tech-packed Veloster has just debuted at the 2011 Detroit Auto Show, and at first blush, the unconventional three-door looks like it'll go down a storm.

While Hyundai's North American CEO John Krafcik freely admitted that the Veloster isn't going to be the quickest car to 60 miles per hour or around a race track (that's what the Genesis Coupe is for), the Korean nonetheless promises frisky performance from its 1.6-liter engine (138 horsepower at 6,300 rpm and 123 pound-feet of torque at 4,850) and available six-speed dual clutch gearbox. A six-speed manual will come as standard-fit, and Hyundai figures that the Veloster will be good for around 40 miles per gallon on the freeway.

2012 Hyundai Veloster rear viewIn the metal, the Veloster is a funky thing, with a longer-than-expected wheelbase thanks to its third front-hinged door on the passenger side. We had a chance to sample the rear seat room, and while getting in was a bit awkward, we found it more useful than the clamshell-style doors on vehicles like the Mini Clubman. Inside, our five-foot, nine-inch frame had adequate head- and legroom when the front-seat passenger had his seat positioned for a similarly sized-frame, but clearly this isn't for long journeys.

Tech-savvy types will be particularly interested in the standard Blue Link system, Hyundai's new telematics gadgetry that integrates everything from service schedule alerts to restaurant ratings, remote start and stolen vehicle slowdown. Some of the more advanced features will be available through a three-tier subscription service, but the seven-inch touchscreen is standard-fit, and a full-featured navigation system is optional (though even non-nav equipped models will have turn-by-turn guidance available through the aforementioned Blue Link).

While pricing has not been finalized, Hyundai is shooting for a base price in the $17,000-range while targeting such various vehicles as the Scion tC, Mini Cooper and Honda CR-Z.

After the usual tease of spy shots and teasers, the sheet has finally been pulled back on the 2012 Hyundai Veloster. Not only does the Veloster take aim at wannabe efficient sports cars like the Honda CR-Z, it reinvents the way we look at the shape of coupes and hatchbacks, employing a unique three-door design that's surprisingly better in execution than we expected.

Let the speculation end: The 2012 Hyundai Veloster will have three conventional forward-hinged doors. We also know the Veloster will have a direct-injected engine (we're pretty sure it will displace 1.6 liters), an available dual-clutch gearbox, hit an estimated 40 miles per gallon and will come with Bluetooth connectivity.

Also, note the split rear glass of the open rear hatchback, a similar arrangement to the Toyota Prius and Honda CR-Z, among others. Clearly, Hyundai hasn't spilled all its beans just yet, so we'll just have to wait until the start of the Detroit Auto Show this Monday, January 10 for the full reveal.
