If you've been wondering exactly what <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/ford">Ford</a> has in mind for the next-generation <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/falcon">Falcon</a>, look no further than the recently revealed <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2011/04/20/new-york-2011-2013-ford-taurus-and-taurus-sho-bow-in-the-big-ap/">2013 Taurus</a> for a few clues. Ford design guru <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/j%20mays">J Mays</a> has officially made it clear that the look of the sedan will be transposed onto several of the automaker's other products, including models like the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/infiniti/mondeo">Mondeo</a> and Falcon. The crew from Go Auto spoke to Mays at the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/new-york-auto-show">New York International Auto Show</a> last week where the designer said that the corporate look will still allow each model to flex its character.<br />

Mays said that the design was heavily influenced by vehicles like the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/audi/a6">Audi A6</a> and that the new trapezoidal grille design on the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/ford/taurus">2013 Taurus</a> will allow the vehicle's face to be easily applied to a range of products. Even so, don't expect to see exact carbon copies across the dealer lot. Mays made it clear that the design can be modified to deliver everything from an aggressive visage to a more subdued look.<br />

<p>Fox Marketing has given Lexus' entry-level hybrid some much-needed teeth, adding an Eaton supercharger to the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/lexus/ct+200h">2011 CT 200h</a>. The huffer forces air through a Climax Racing intake manifold, helping the CT's 1.8-liter four pot crank out 300 high-voltage ponies.<br />
<br />
Fox also says it beefed up the car's batteries, but details on what exactly the company did are nil. The added power means the CT 200h has to work a little harder to stay pointed in the right direction, which Fox addressed with a full-on custom suspension and enormous Baer brakes. The 13-inch Baers sit behind a set of 20-inch wheels sporting a huge offset and healthy 225/30-series meats up front and 255/30s at the back.<br />
<br />
You'd think that a 300-horsepower hybrid would make an excellent sleeper, but that's just not Fox Marketing's style. Instead, it cloaked the little Lexus in metallic burnt orange paint, and draped it in a wide body kit, featuring huge three-inch fender flares. Inside, there's a set of Yonaka racing seats complemented with LED <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/lexus/">Lexus</a> logos on the door panels. 	<a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/volkswagen">Volkswagen</a> made a big deal about having the original Beetle in the studio when the designers went to work on the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2011/04/18/new-york-2011-vw-beetle-live-reveal/">2012 Beetle</a>, so at the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/new-york-auto-show/">2011 New York Auto Show</a>, we spoke to Rainer Michel, vice president of product marketing and strategy for VW of America, about why that decision was so important.<br />
	<br />
	"What we did in '98 was the right car for that time," he said, "but this one is more true to the design of the original," a design philosophy that is apparent in items like the decreased rake of the A-pillar and the flattened line of the roof that descends further back and more cleanly into the bumper.<br />
	<br />
	And Michel said that the next time they redesign the Beetle, they'll again return to the source. "We went back to the original and did a design based on that, and when we do the next one we'll go back to the original. Maybe we'll go in a different direction, but it comes from the original." The idea is that the third generation of the New Beetle won't be a redesign of the current car, it will be another modernized version of the original.<br />

	As to the increased masculinity of the 2012 Beetle, Michel said, "The last car was about 60/40 female to male." He intimated he'd be happy with a 50/50 split, but what was more important to him was getting away from that concern at all. "We wanted a car with good interior space, more shoulder room and head clearance, a car which accommodates passengers nicely and has a range of powertrains," he said. "The car shouldn't depend on any demographics."<br />

	When asked about Chrysler's Street Racing Technology (SRT) division rolling out another big-bore, high-horsepower engine at the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/new-york-auto-show/">2011 New York Auto Show</a>, Dan Reid, the company's head of media relations, said "there's a market for it - cars that go fast and sound good."<br />

		Joseph Grace, the vehicle line manager for the SRT division, agreed that "big, naturally-aspirated V8s" can still find enough buyers to support halo cars. The tuning arm is open, however, to less potent options. "There's a precedent for four-cylinders [with the Dodge Neon SRT4], and a 6 [on the Crossfire SRT6], and when we get the right platform we'll look at it again." Added Reid, "The five areas for SRT are powertrain, braking, handling, interior and exterior," and any potential SRT vehicle has to live up to that first qualification. Grace then told us that the 6.4-liter engine in the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2011/04/20/2012-jeep-grand-cherokee-srt8-new-york-reveal/">2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8</a>, with its cylinder deactivation and active exhaust system, was "the most efficient way to deliver the kind of performance the customer expects."<br />

		"We had great success with the SRT4 and there's a trend toward smaller displacement turbo engines, there's actually a demographic that that appeals to," Grace said. But when asked whether there could be something like an Dodge Journey SRT, Grace suggested not and said, "That's why we have the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/10/28/2011-dodge-grand-caravan-revealed/">Man Van</a>."</div>

			As for where else Chrysler is looking for special models, Reid said, "Want to expand the 300 model line to a car for every personality, tailor models to different customers. Right now we have a 'bare-bones' model, the 300, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2011/04/20/chrysler-300s-eight-speed-transmission-new-york-2011/">300 S</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2011/04/21/2012-chrysler-300c-executive-series-new-york-2011/">300C Executive</a>, and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2011/04/20/2012-chrysler-300-srt8/">SRT8</a>. We're looking at the non-traditional customer and seeing what they'd like."</div>

At the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/new-york-auto-show/">2011 New York Auto Show</a>, we asked Joseph Grace, vehicle line executive for the SRT line, about the specs on the new <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2011/04/20/2012-jeep-grand-cherokee-srt8-quickest-jeep-ever/">2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8</a> - specifically, why didn't they make it... <em>more</em>. The previous Grand Cherokee SRT8 was said to reach 60 miles per hour "<a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/03/16/review-2009-jeep-grand-cherokee-srt8/">in under five seconds</a>" while the new one is pegged at 4.8 seconds. While that's an improvement of, at most, one-nineteenth of a second, it puts it right about square with the Mercedes ML63 AMG and at least three-tenths of a second adrift of the BMW X5 M.<br />

But Grace said that wasn't really the point. "The major issues customers had that we wanted to address," he said, "were the ride, the exhaust, and fuel economy and range." This wasn't about making a faster SUV, it was about filling in the gaps of the previous model.<br />

The center-mounted exhaust was swapped for dual pipes at the corners. The engine technologies - "it's the first time we've coupled all-out performance with cylinder deactivation and active exhaust," Grace said - have yielded better gas mileage and longer range.<br />
<br />
The adaptive ride suspension developed in conjunction with Bilstein addresses the handling issues with five settings. On the matter of having a Track setting in such serious tonnage, Grace said "It was an application we had available with the adaptive damping." It shunts a little more torque to the rear wheels, going to a 60/40 front-to-rear split instead of 65/35, but Grace says "The track setting will keep the tires on the ground and makes [the ride] stiff but it can still be used on the road."

		As for those German rivals, Grace said "We haven't announced pricing, but in comparison to the others it will be a benchmark in performance-for-value in a super-equipped vehicle."</div>

The <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/jaguar/xf">Jaguar XF</a> only arrived in 2008, but in just three years, it has reset the course for a brand that was hobbled by the transgression of the X-Type and a beloved but aging <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/jaguar/xj">XJ</a>. In 2010, it received a new set of engines that delivered performance on par with the promise of the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/01/08/detroit-auto-show-jaguar-c-xf-concept-brings-gorgeous-to-the-fo/">concept car</a>, and now, for 2012, we have a car that delivers on the looks of that showstopper. Jaguar has revealed a refreshed XF at the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/new-york-auto-show/">New York Auto Show</a>, and the renew isn't ostentatious, but it is thorough, and rewarding.<br />

It's not <a href="http://green.autoblog.com/2009/03/09/toyota-corrects-prius-mpg-rating-to-51-city-48-highway-50-combin/">50 miles per gallon</a> (rest, easy <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/toyota/prius">Prius</a>), but the mpg numbers for the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/honda/civic">2012 Honda Civic Hybrid</a> impress us nonetheless: 44/44/44. That's city/highway/combined, and it's a nice jump - especially in the city - from the 40/43/41 numbers sported by the 2011 model.<br />
<br />
The <a href="http://green.autoblog.com/category/New-York-Auto-Show/">New York Auto Show</a> this week has been full of "40 mpg" claims from many automakers, but these have mostly described just one of the three ratings categories (usually highway). To have Honda announce you get an estimated 44 miles to the gallon no matter how you drive deserves a bit of praise. <small>(Golf clap.)</small><br />
<br />
The reason for the fuel economy boost lies, in part, with the upgraded battery pack used in the Honda Integrated Motor Assist system. Instead of the nickel-metal hydride batteries used in previous Civic Hybrids, the '12 version cruises along with 20-kW worth of li-ion cells. Compared to the NiMH pack, the lithium-ion battery is 5 kW more powerful and also a bit lighter. The gas engine has also been upgraded from 1.3 liters to a 1.5-liter i-VTEC four-cylinder, and the full system offers 110 combined horsepower at 5,500 rpm. <a href="http://autoblog.com/make/suzuki">Suzuki</a> has often flirted with the idea of strapping a turbocharger to the <a href="http://autoblog.com/suzuki/kizashi">Kizashi</a>, and it's once again putting it at the front of our minds with this, the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2011/04/20/suzuki-kizashi-ecocharge-apex-concept-revealed/#continued">Apex concept</a>, here at the <a href="http://autoblog.com/new-york-auto-show">2011 New York Auto Show</a>.<br />
<br />
The Kizashi Apex uses a Garrett turbocharger, air-to-liquid intercooler and a recalibrated ECU to produce an estimated 275 to 300 horsepower, mated solely to a six-speed manual transmission. To communicate that grunt to the road, Suzuki has fitted the Apex with a set of 19-inch wheels wrapped in sticky 245-series Yokohama tires.<br />
<br />
As for the graphics package, the livery is pulled from the Japanese automaker's GSX-R race motorcycles, tying the Apex to Suzuki's racier roots. Of course, the car is simply a concept for now, but we're crossing our fingers that it makes it to production... somehow.<br />

To commemorate its social media milestone of surpassing <a href="http://www.facebook.com/porsche">one million fans on Facebook</a> (its fan page is currently at 1,502,860 members), <a href="http://autoblog.com/make/porsche">Porsche</a> has created <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2011/02/16/porsche-celebrates-millionth-facebook-fan-with-special-911-gt3-r/">this special edition</a> of the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/911%20gt3%20r%20hybrid">911 GT3 R Hybrid</a> complete with the signatures of over 27,000 Porsche fans. The car makes its North American debut this week at the <a href="http://autoblog.com/new-york-auto-show">New York Auto Show</a> before it goes on display inside the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart.<br />
<br />
Porsche's hybrid racer packs 480 horsepower from its 4.0-liter flat-six engine and is matched with two 80-hp electric motors. The German automaker recently tested the hybrid system's capability during the 2010 24 Hours of N&uuml;rburgring, and Porsche firmly believes that hybrid performance cars like this foreshadow the future of racing.<br />

Extra spoilers and lower side skirts can look cool, but if the car doesn't have any sort of augmented performance, it all seems pointless. Still, for those who want to give the appearance of being quick, <a href="http://autoblog.com/make/chevrolet">Chevrolet</a> will offer a line of <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2011/04/14/2012-chevrolet-sonic-z-spec-accessories-new-york/">Z-Spec dealer-installed accessories</a> for its upcoming <a href="http://autoblog.com/tag/sonic">2012 Sonic</a>.<br />

Chevrolet chose to debut its dot matrix-wrapped Sonic here at this year's <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/new-york-auto-show/">New York Auto Show</a>, sporting a set of 17-inch painted alloys and a ground effects package. Why anyone would willingly choose such a visually awkward wrap is beyond us, but remember, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.<br />

<a href="http://autoblog.com/make/honda">Honda</a> brought the whole family of <a href="http://autoblog.com/honda/civic">2012 Civics</a> to the party at this year's <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/new-york-auto-show/">New York Auto Show</a>. We've gotten to feast our eyes on the coupe, sedan, Si, hybrid and natural gas-drinking GX. That's a lot of new sheetmetal to look at, so we decided to pack them all in one post to make it easy on you.<br />
<br />
The 2012 Civic coupe, sedan and GX are all powered by a 1.8-liter inline four-cylinder engine that produces 140 horsepower. In uber-efficient HF guise, the same engines is capable of returning 41 miles per gallon fuel economy on the highway. The standard coupe and sedan are nearly as frugal at 39 mpg on the highway. We'll have a separate report on the new Civic Hybrid soon, but in the meantime know that it will be rated at 44 mpg combined, an improvement of 4 mpg over last year's model.<br />
<br />
Were it our money on the line, however, we'd trade a few miles per gallon for a bit more driving excitement. The 2012 Honda Civic Si would be our choice, with its new 200-horsepower/170 pound-feet of torque 2.4-liter four-cylinder. Still, this is a compact Honda and, when paired with the six-speed manual gearbox, the Civic Si achieves 31 miles per gallon on the highway.<br />

Either way, the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2011/04/21/officially-official-fiat-500c-drops-its-top-for-new-york/">2012 Fiat 500c</a> is doing just that. Maybe not the sun, but it is letting in the bright lights of the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/new-york-auto-show">New York Auto Show</a> stage.<br />

Set to hit our shores this spring, the droptop two-door <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/fiat">Fiat</a> is powered by a 1.4-liter MultiAir inline-four-cylinder engine. Output is rated at 101 horsepower and 98 pound-feet of torque. Paired with a five-speed manual transmission, the powertrain is good for 38 miles per gallon on the highway.<br />

The real magic of the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/fiat/500">500c</a>, however, sits in the cloth top that serves roof duty. With the press of a button, it slides back and can work like a soft sunroof or go all the way down and give occupants the sun's full monty. At the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/new-york-auto-show/">2011 New York Auto Show</a>, we asked Dominic Infante, Subaru's U.S. product manager, about the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2011/04/19/subaru-xv-concept-crossover-unveiled-in-shanghai/">XV Concept</a> revealed at the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/shanghai-motor-show/">Shanghai Motor Show</a>. "It's probably not for us," he said, "but we're looking at it. And if it did come, it probably wouldn't be called Outback Sport."<br />
<br />
That's because the Outback Sport is an anomaly in Subaru's U.S. line-up that the brand's marketing arm would like to correct - an Outback in name only, it is actually based on the Impreza platform. But it sells so well, Infante says, "that the sales guys don't want them to change anything. They're like, 'Don't mess it up.'"<br />

Designated as the spiritual successor of the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/06/13/officially-official-2008-ford-shelby-gt/">Shelby GT</a> that was built from 2007 to 2008, the new GTS represents the base model in the <a href="http://autoblog.com/tag/shelby">Shelby</a> lineup. According to company president John Luft, Shelby's average buyer is in their late '50s, and the iconic tuner hopes to bring in a younger crowd with a more affordable offering.<br />

Available as a post-title package on both the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/09/21/2011-ford-mustang-gt-coupe-and-convertible-review-road-test/">Mustang GT</a> and the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/03/29/2011-ford-mustang-v6-first-drive/">Mustang V6</a>, the GTS includes a variety of upgrades including a <a href="http://autoblog.com/make/ford">Ford</a> Racing handling pack, Borla exhaust system, Baer brakes, unique front fascia, Le Mans stripes and a deep-draw hood. Optional components include superchargers for both the V6 and the V8, a Watts-link rear suspension system, upgraded brakes and more.<br />

<a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/dodge">Dodge</a> seems eager to inject a shot of sportiness into any model it can. The redesigned <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/dodge/avenger">Avenger</a> is a model that could certainly use the help, thus the 2012 Dodge Avenger R/T seen here. While we would love to see an SRT-tuned version of the sedan (or a better sedan entirely), the R/T touches are a good start.<br />
<br />
Rather than focusing efforts on the 283-horsepower, 3.6-liter Pentastar V6, the engineers at Dodge have elected to fiddle with the suspension. Roll stiffness, strut damping and spring rates have been increased both front and rear, while the rear stabilizer bar has grown from 19-millimeters out to 21-millimeters.<br />
<br />
In order to let you know you're looking at an Avenger R/T, Dodge has added a signature decal across the front fenders, an R/T badge on the back, a rear spoiler and 18-inch painted-aluminum wheels. 	After Nissan unveiled its redesigned <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2011/04/20/2012-nissan-versa-new-york-2011/">2012 Versa sedan</a> at the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/new-york-auto-show/">New York Auto Show</a> yesterday, coverage was almost unanimous in declaring it, at best, inconspicuous. David Reuter, Nissan's VP of Corporate Communications, tells Autoblog that's fine:</div>

The formula, inconspicuous as it might be, has worked: Nissan moved 99,705 Versa sedans and hatchbacks in 2010, running away from everything else in the class - next were the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/honda/fit">Honda Fit</a> with 54,354, the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/hyundai/accent">Hyundai Accent</a> with 51,975, and the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/model/Aveo">Chevrolet Aveo</a> with 48,623 units sold. Say what you will about the looks, with a segment-leading 103 cubic feet of room in the 2012 Versa and more standard features at a competitive price point, the momentum will likely continue.<br />

<a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/mazda/">Mazda</a> is betting big on its <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/skyactiv/">SkyActiv</a> engine technology, and the first North American vehicle to carry the new motor is the 2012 <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/infiniti/mazda3">Mazda3</a>. Makes sense, since one out of every three Mazda vehicles sold around the globe wears a "3" on the back. Launching with the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2011/04/20/2012-mazda3-with-new-skyactiv-engine-gets-40-mpg-updated-exteri/">2012 Mazda3</a> this fall, SkyActiv engines and transmissions will then wind-up in <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2011/04/18/mazda-cx-5-small-crossover-announced/">the upcoming CX-5</a> by next spring, and a year later we'll get a diesel variant of the efficient engine.<br />

The directly injected unit is rated at 40 miles per gallon on the highway in the Mazda3, and produces 155 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 148 pound-feet of torque at 4,100 rpm. That's a horsepower increase of five percent and torque bump of 10 percent, all in a package that's 4.4 pounds lighter than the currently available standard 2.0-liter.<br />

The SkyActiv-equipped 2012 Mazda3 is offered with a choice between two transmissions: a six-speed manual or automatic, both of which are also part of the SkyActiv family. SkyActiv-Drive is the automatic of the group, and helps the Mazda3 achieve a range of 540 miles. While the auto is the transmission of choice for 40 mpg drives, the SkyActiv-MT also allows for efficient motoring. When equipped with the manual, the fuel economy rating dips to 39 mpg on the highway.<br />

SkyActiv-G engines will be offered under the hood of both the sedan and hatchback versions of the Mazda3. Both have also received a minor exterior refresh, which comes in the form of a revised front fascia. SkyActiv-equipped models can also be distinguished by some subtle blue headlamp trim and SkyActiv badging.<br />
