Mini showed off the Paceman Concept at this year's Detroit Auto Show and announced not long afterward that it would spawn a production model. Tom Salkowski, who recently moved from BMW USA to Mini USA to fill the role of marketing manager, will be the man charged with getting the word about about Mini's eighth model and the ones beyond. Here's what he had to tell us.

The small car segment has erupted over the past couple of years and "Mini has prospered" even though it "faced significantly more competition." But when asked what kind of head-to-head competitors the brand thinks it faces, Salkowski said "maybe Volkswagen, Mazda, Scion in the small-car segment," with the caveat that since "Mini is very much a mindset, it's different than other vehicles," so "for the time being we don't see anything." Head of product management Oliver Friedmann confirmed the assessment with, "We don't see any one-to-one competition, maybe the Evoque could be" for the Countryman.

Salkowski offered his thoughts on the Fiat 500 with, "The 500 is a darling little car, but Mini is a premium brand."

On the discussion of roots and heritage at other emotional brands like BMW and Lotus, when asked how big the Mini brand and Mini cars could get and still be considered Minis, Friedmann said, "That's what we try to find out at the moment. We just jumped over the four-meter line with the Countryman," but reaction in the three months that the crossover has been on sale in Europe has been "very positive."

Nevertheless, it's not about creating an acceptance of a Mini of any size. Friedman said, "The competitors for the Countryman are significantly larger. We will always stay the smallest in the segment." But the number one rejection of Mini is due to size and space, so the company had to do something.

Mini's been known for its irreverent advertising, and it doesn't sound like much will change under Salkowski, with a "bigger spend on television - you only get one chance to launch a car." There will also be a huge billboard in Times Square, and a take-off on Mini's original U.S. launch when they had a roving Ford Excursion driving around with a Mini on its roof. This time it will be a roving Countryman with a vintage Mini, Alec Issigonis' original, on its roof.

The Kia KV7 Concept isn't only a concept. At the Detroit Auto Show this week, Michael Sprague, Kia's vice president of marketing, told Autoblog "We tend to use auto shows to presage what will be coming," and referenced the Kia Kue Concept from 2007 revealing the brand's design intent as precursor to the Sportage, then the Kia Koup Concept in 2008 and Soul Concepts in 2009 leading to their respective production versions.

The question is what we might see on the retail floor; certainly not the lounge-like seating, the full-length LED dash, or the gill-like LED headlights. Sprague tells AB, "With the KV7 what we see coming eventually is materials on the vehicle that we'd like to see incorporated. Or getting a Kia that's Wi-Fi enabled, it's just a question of how soon." Could this hint at a successor to Kia's aging Sedona/Carnival minivan?

Either way, it's likely that the brand's hilarious Hamstars won't be selling whatever the KV7 turns into. As to how much longer the furry rappers can keep it moving in the Soul's ad campaign, Sprague admits "We might have another one in us." Otherwise, the marketing push is that "we're going to market more sporty as Hyundai goes more premium," and the brand's creative like the Sweet Dreams ad stresses "making rational things fun."

We've already crawled all over the GMC Sierra All Terrain HD Concept at the Detroit Auto Show, and Mike Levine from PickupTrucks.com took an extensive look at the interior and exterior with designer Carl Zipfel. The questions we really wanted to get answered were, of course, "Are you going to build it? And if not, can we build it?"

As to whether GMC is considering bringing it to market - built on a GMC line or by a partner firm - Zipfel suggested that the company is considering the possibilities. However, right now it remains a concept only and there are no plans to build it.

In its favor is that Zipfel's team started with a production truck. "It's the best of the Duramax HD with more off-roading capability," he said, "built with an existing Duramax diesel and existing supplier connections."

When asked if a customer could build it, Zipfel said an HD owner could replicate "everything but the lights." You can't get the 5'8" bed on the 2500 Duramax HD, and widening the track by four inches would be a slightly lesser challenge. Otherwise, the chassis wasn't chopped to create the shortened front end, and Zipfeld said, "We think we're in striking distance for crash testing if GMC decided to build it."

Episode #212 of the Autoblog Podcast is the remedy to our post-Detroit Show hangover, with Chris Shunk, Dan Roth and Chris Paukert all weighing in. We start with the Autoblog Garage and then cover some of our personal impressions of the goings-on at Cobo. It's a wide-ranging discussion that covers the Buick Verano, Honda Civic, Toyota Prius V, Ford C-Max, Volkswagen Passat, Ford Vertrek, Hyundai Veloster and Chevrolet Sonic, among other highlights. We prattle on for an hour and twenty-two minutes before we run out of steam and call it a night. Thanks for listening!
During the 2011 Detroit Auto Show, Chrysler silently displayed its latest hardcore version of the Wrangler, the Call of Duty: Black Ops Edition. The stealthy Wrangler, now shown in two-door trim, looks fantastic with its mineral gray wheels, 32-inch off-road tires and host of Mopar goodies. On top of that, all Wranglers are recieving a brand-new interior and other small improvements for the 2011 model year, so the Black Ops edition is clearly ready to comfortably get you through any sort of war zone.

We've captured a brace of high-res images of the Call of Duty Wrangler live from Cobo Hall, so scroll through our gallery below to see them for yourself.
It's never easy to reach a unanimous decision when it comes time for our group of auto-obsessive bloggers to choose any sort of list that involves automobiles. In the case of the Top Five Introductions from the 2011 Detroit Auto Show, the process was especially difficult.

Somewhat surprisingly, most everyone agreed rather quickly on positions one and two, but from there, the waters were much murkier. In the end, though, we made our arguments for and against, considered each others' viewpoints and, after much weeping and gnashing of teeth, had ourselves a workable list.

Yesterday was by far one of the busiest auto show days we've experienced. Press conferences started at a sleep-depriving 6:30 a.m. and lasted all the way until nearly 8:00 that evening. Needless to say, there was no time to stop and enjoy the cars.

Today was a little different. With no major press conferences we've had the opportunity to walk around the show floor and thoroughly inspect the new debuts. We also got the chance to get better photographs of some of our favorite vehicles of the show, and this year cars like the Porsche 918 RSR, BMW 1 Series M Coupe and Hyundai Veloster were the real stars. You can see our best images from the show below, each uploaded in 1920x1275 for those with extra large computer monitors.

Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne says the automaker plans to only offer one minivan in the future, eliminating either the Chrysler Town and Country or Dodge Caravan by 2013. Additionally, the company is working on a smaller "people mover," that will go to whichever marque doesn't retain the minivan.

"If our Project Genesis [a plan to have all Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep showrooms at a single dealership] goes to its conclusion, which is the plan, then it makes no sense to offer consumers two minivans differentiated only by equipment," Marchionne said in an interview with reporters at the North American International Auto Show.

The smaller "people mover" is being engineered from a new architecture that will underpin several new vehicles in the Fiat and Chrysler lineups. Though Marchionne didn't get into specifics, the platform is likely to be developed for the Fiat Giulietta, with Chrysler and Fiat engineers planning to expand and adapt the chassis to serve as the basis for a replacement for the Jeep Compass and Patriot, among other vehicles.

Inititally, Marchionne indicated that he would prefer to keep the Dodge Caravan and make the micro-van a Chrysler. In Canada, 80% of the minivan mix is comprised of the Dodge Caravan. But the Town and Country outsells the Caravan in the U.S. and other markets. "We will have to look at the branding, but we are absolutely going to one minivan." One consideration for Chrysler planners will be that it would be difficult to get the premium price points - over $40,000 for the top-of-the-line Town and Country - for a Dodge branded minivan. LIkewise, it will be difficult to get prices North of 30,000 for even a loaded Chrysler micro-van.

Marchionne also said that both the minivan, and the micro-van would be built at the company's Windsor, Ontario plant where the minivans are currently produced and designed to compete against the Mazda5 and Ford Grand C-Max.
Chrysler's Marchionne says only one minivan per brand, C-Max competitor coming originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 11 Jan 2011 14:58:00 EST.
2012 Mercedes-Benz S350 Bluetec - Click above for high-res image gallery

During the festivities here at the 2011 Detroit Auto Show, Mercedes-Benz quietly rolled out the 2012 S350 Bluetec, a diesel-powered S-Class that's destined for consumption here in the United States. The big news is that M-B will now offer the only diesel-powered flagship luxury sedan here in the States - Audi, BMW and Jaguar don't offer an oil-burning version of their high-rollers here in the U.S.

Mercedes-Benz neglected to release any technical specifications about the new S350 Bluetec, but as its nomenclature would suggest, it's powered by the same 3.5-liter Bluetec V6 found in the E-, ML- and GL-Class vehicles. Mercedes has clearly proven that the business case for Bluetec here in the United States is indeed valid, and we'd much rather opt for a diesel S-Class as opposed to the S400 Hybrid.

Johnson Controls ie:3 Interior Concept - Click above for high-res image gallery

All the fancy technology automakers are planting inside our vehicles needs to be supplied from somewhere... like, say, Tier 1 automotive supplier Johnson Controls. The supplier is using the Detroit Auto Show to show off some of its latest wares, and it's packaged a slew of goodies in the hollowed-out shell of a Kia Soul and called it the ie:3 concept. The little 'ute has had all of its guts removed, with the drivetrain replaced by a 23-kWh lithium ion battery pack that sits beneath the floor, which Johnson Controls estimates is good for a 100-mile range.

The IE in ie:3 stands for Inspired Efficiency, and the 3 means there are three main benefits to the design: delighting buyers, allowing automakers to differentiate their products and expanding sustainability. All that may be more a bit of marketing fluff, but there's at least some substance to the claims. For instance, the single-piece stamped seats save lots of space, allowing the reclining rear seats to be mounted higher than the fronts. Also notable is the so-called FaserTec seat pads that are made from natural fibers and are easily recyclable.

More innovation can be found in the vehicle's headliner, which acts as a large speaker that frees up storage space where the door-mounted speakers would normally be found. However, perhaps the coolest bit of tech is the Human Machine Interface, consisting of a transparent heads-up display that rises from the dash, a 6.5-inch transflective display that doesn't wash out in direct sunlight and another 8.8-inch central display that can be controlled either through a touch interface or a haptic controller mounted on a sliding rail between the two front seats.

It's all pretty impressive, and, despite the fact that it's got so much technology baked in (plus an entire battery pack under the floor), Johnson Controls has still managed to substantially increase interior space. See for yourself in our high-res image galleries below, and read all the details in the press release after the break.

Nestled into a well-hidden crevice on the outskirts of the Chrysler booth at the Detroit Auto Show is a Mopar-accessorized 200 Super S. That's right: a pimped 200. It would appear that Mopar noticed the 200 looks a bit... tall, so Team Pentastar's aftermarket arm dropped the 200's suspension a full three inches and outfitted it with a reworked lower chin and rear decklid spoilers. The 200 is further tweaked with a sublime quartet of glossy black 19-inch wheels, a pair of awkward hood vents, a mesh grille and foglamp bezels with light bar applique.

So... your neighbors still haven't noticed that you dropped thousands of dollars on aftermarket parts for your Chrysler 200? Mopar's design department has also re-sprayed the Super S with two-tone tungsten on matte black paint. Unfortunately the thin pinstriping on the showcar appears less than production ready. Click below for our high-res gallery of the 200 Super S.

GMC Sierra All Terrain Concept - Click above for high-res image gallery

We have to admit, we felt a pang of sympathy for the mighty GMC Sierra All Terrain Concept. While The Dodge Ramrunner and Ford F-150 SVT Raptor both held prominent spots in their respective booths at the 2011 Detroit Auto Show, the Sierra All-Terrain Concept was tucked away in a corner all by its lonesome. It seems hardly a fair fate for a truck that boasts ground-stomping Fox Racing external bypass shocks, aggressive fender flares and a monstrous lift.

General Motors managed to yank a full 397 horsepower and 765 pound-feet of torque from the 6.6-liter Duramax diesel engine nestled under the hood. That means that not only could you dominate any trail you set your mind to in this thing, you could also tow a full-size house along for the ride.

Unfortunately, it's unclear whether The General will be able to work up the gumption to actually produce such a truck. If it does make its way to the public sphere, odds are that the buildup would be handled by an external firm.

Jeep has proclaimed itself as "one of the world's few, true icons." Normally, we'd take issue with such a brazen statement, but in the case of Jeep, we don't really disagree. In fact, in a good portion of the developed world, the word 'Jeep" is synonymous with sport utility vehicles in general... like Kleenex or Coke.

With that in mind, Chrysler think it's time to celebrate Jeep's 70th anniversary in 2011, and as you might expect, the off-road specialist is releasing a slew of special editions to commemorate the occasion. All of the new 2011 models - one each of Jeep's five models - will be available in a unique Bronze Star exterior paint in addition to Bright Silver and Black along with the appropriate spate of 70th Anniversary badges.

All five 70th Anniversary Jeeps will come with a dark perforated leather interior (either Dark Slate or Dark Olive, depending on the model) with Chestnut stitching, Berber carpeting (yes, really), unique cluster overlays and 70th Anniversary logos on the radio. Past that, each model gets its own set of touches that will set it apart from its non-Anniverarized siblings.

We'll grab some live photos of these machines here at the Detroit Auto Show soon enough. In the meantime, get the complete details in the press release after the break, and also be sure to peruse all the milestones in Jeep's 70 years of history.
General Motors seems intent on banishing all memories of the unloved Aveo - so much so that it's gone and renamed its entry-level fighter in the States. While we're still not 100-percent in love with the name (we can't get visions of spiky-haired hedgehogs out of our heads...), all three flavors of the Sonic do appear to be vastly improved over the machine they replace, though one of them, the Z Spec, is still in the concept stage.

More than anything else, they look vastly better both inside and out, but until we get a stint behind the wheel we'll hold off final judgment. According to Chris Perry, vice president of Chevrolet marketing, "The all-new Chevrolet Sonic blends the practicality of a small car with the passion for driving that Chevrolet vehicles like the Corvette are known for." That won't be the only time you'll ever hear someone mention the Sonic in the same sentence as the Corvette. In fact, Chevy tells us that Corvette engineers are responsible for the ride and handling of the sub-compact.

The Sonic will be available in both sedan and hatchback bodystyles and with either a 1.8-liter four-cylinder mated to a five-speed manual or six-speed automatic, or a 1.4-liter turbocharged mill with 138 horsepower that's hooked to either an automatic or manual with six forward ratios. For those keeping track, these are the same engines available in the slightly larger Cruze. You'll also get a gauge cluster inspired by motorcycles, OnStar connectivity, 10 airbags and plenty more.

Read all the details in the exhaustive press release after the break, but not before you peruse the high-res images in the galleries below.

Kia certainly knows a thing or two about embracing the box design. After all, the styling of the Soul is certainly a perfect interpretation of the good things boxy shapes can create. With that in mind, Kia has set to reinvent the van with its new KV7 Concept here at the Detroit Auto Show. But we aren't talking minivan - this is pure, boxy conversion van hotness.

Inside, there are clever features like swivel chairs for all occupants (including the driver), and the rear quarters are set up in a sort of lounge fashion. There are nifty gadgets like a floating table-top computer and full wireless internet capability. Wrap that in a sleek, boxy package that boasts a 285-turbocharged four-cylinder engine and the end result is a van that means serious business. As much as we'd love to see this concept come to fruition, we'll chalk this one up as just another example of what happens when you let automotive designers run wild. See for yourself in the high-res galleries below.

The Fiat 500 is one attractive little hatchback, but its voluptuous curves and diminutive size lend some to believe the little Italian is aimed squarely at the female demographic. We're not so inclined to agree, especially if the 500 proves to be as fun to drive as its primary competition, but a little aesthetic tuning never hurt.

The experts at Mopar took a page from the Mini playbook with a slew of mods that could make it more attractive to the coveted 18-25 male demographic. The tweaks start on the outside with a bevy of chrome accents including side mirrors, a snazzy exhaust tip, chrome door handles and a very cherry 500-emblazoned fuel door. Out back you can't miss the massive snowboard carrier, and the high-gloss black wheels don't do much to avert attention either. The front end stands out with a pair of offset blue stripes that stretch all the way to the boot. Step inside and you're greeted with 500-embossed seats and door-sills guards. Check out all the mods in the gallery below.

Mercedes-Benz brought along a fleet of green-leaning vehicles to this year's Detroit Auto Show. While the German automaker displayed its hydrogen B-Class F-Cell alongside a flotilla of BlueTec diesels, the SLS AMG E-Cell stole the stage. Aside from wearing the world's most eye-searing matte-yellow paint, the electrified supercar boasts 525 horsepower and 649 pound-feet of torque thanks to four synchronous electric motors. The SLS AMG E-Cell wears its motors close to each wheel, skipping the unsprung mass problem of hub-mount configurations to help protect the car's handling prowess.

Word has it that the SLS AMG E-Cell can do the 0-60 mph dance in a scant 3.7 seconds. Lithium-ion batteries handle energy storage, and regenerative braking helps keep the cells topped off between charges. Speaking of the batteries, the electric Silver Arrow wears a temperature management system just for the battery array to make sure that charging and discharging occurs in the best environment possible. Mercedes-Benz isn't saying exactly what kind of range drivers could expect if the SLS AMG E-Cell were in production, nor do we know exactly how long it would take to charge the electric supercar. Hit the jump for the press release and get ready to order your own sometime next year.

Mini's model line is expanding at an exponential rate, and according to BMW's smallest division, the Paceman Concept will form the basis of its eighth production vehicle. Even if that's the case, nothing resembling the Paceman is going to beat either the Mini Coupe or Roadster to market, which are expected to hit dealers in late 2011 and 2012, respectively.

What we have in the Paceman is basically a Countryman that's been relieved of its two rear doors and granted a gradually sloping roofline. Yes, that will indeed limit the machine's versatility, but it also adds a sporty vibe to the somewhat high-riding crossover.

Power for the Paceman concept comes from Mini's John Cooper Works-fettled 1.6-litre twin-scroll turbocharged engine that puts out 211 horsepower and 192 pound-feet of torque (207 with the overboost function). Those ponies are sent to all four wheels via Mini's permanent ALL4 all-wheel drive system via either a six-speed manual or automatic gearbox.

Naturally, you'll find a full high-res image gallery of live photos from the Detroit Auto Show below, and we've gone ahead and posted the official press release after the break for your reading pleasure.
Hyundai's funky, tech-packed Veloster has just debuted at the 2011 Detroit Auto Show, and at first blush, the unconventional three-door looks like it'll go down a storm.

While Hyundai's North American CEO John Krafcik freely admitted that the Veloster isn't going to be the quickest car to 60 miles per hour or around a race track (that's what the Genesis Coupe is for), the Korean nonetheless promises frisky performance from its 1.6-liter engine (138 horsepower at 6,300 rpm and 123 pound-feet of torque at 4,850) and available six-speed dual clutch gearbox. A six-speed manual will come as standard-fit, and Hyundai figures that the Veloster will be good for around 40 miles per gallon on the freeway.

In the metal, the Veloster is a funky thing, with a longer-than-expected wheelbase thanks to its third front-hinged door on the passenger side. We had a chance to sample the rear seat room, and while getting in was a bit awkward, we found it more useful than the clamshell-style doors on vehicles like the Mini Clubman. Inside, our five-foot, nine-inch frame had adequate head- and legroom when the front-seat passenger had his seat positioned for a similarly sized-frame, but clearly this isn't for long journeys.

Tech-savvy types will be particularly interested in the standard Blue Link system, Hyundai's new telematics gadgetry that integrates everything from service schedule alerts to restaurant ratings, remote start and stolen vehicle slowdown. Some of the more advanced features will be available through a three-tier subscription service, but the seven-inch touchscreen is standard-fit, and a full-featured navigation system is optional (though even non-nav equipped models will have turn-by-turn guidance available through the aforementioned Blue Link).

While pricing has not been finalized, Hyundai is shooting for a base price in the $17,000-range while targeting such various vehicles as the Scion tC, Mini Cooper and Honda CR-Z.
