It's been an achingly long, three-year slog up until this point, but Chevrolet has finally taken the wraps off the production version of the 2011 Camaro Convertible ahead of its big day at the LA Auto Show.

The somewhat small images posted on Facebook give us our first view of the drop-top pony car with its canvas roof in place, but other than that, the 'vert is exactly what you've come to expect. Both V6 and V8 models will be available at launch, with the six-pot RS putting out 312 horsepower and the range-topping LS3-equipped SS producing 426 ponies. Sales are set to begin this March, with an entry-level price tag of around $30,000.

It's a big day for the Chevrolet Camaro Convertible. General Motors has pulled back the curtains on a low-volume special edition version of the drop-top muscle car set to go on sale next year. The vehicle is slated to be featured in the annual Neiman Marcus Christmas Book - a catalog of high-end goodies for the ruling class. Only 100 examples of the Neiman Marcus Camaro Convertible will be sold through the catalog, each wearing special Deep Bordeaux paint and boasting drivetrain components borrowed from the mighty Camaro SS. That means there's a full 426 horsepower on tap. Inside, GM has slathered the cockpit in leather touches only available on this special edition.

Want one? You better have been one very, very good boy or girl this year. The price tag for the beast you see above is a heady $75,000.

The General also showed off a handful of additional photos of the standard Camaro Convertible on Facebook. This time, we get a closer look at the vehicle's interior as well as a view from the front of the car. It looks good, sure, but we don't know if its $75,000 good. It's been an increasingly popular practice to auction off a hot new model to some lucky winner before it hits showrooms, and the 2011 Camaro convertible doesn't plan to be left out. General Motors is auctioning the first sample of the topless pony car in Las Vegas at the Barrett-Jackson Auction on September 24, with proceeds going to the YMCA of Southern Nevada. There's a press release after the jump and a few high-res teasers below in case you want to start saving up.

General Motors and Magna may weren't exactly seeing eye to eye when the Canadian supplier failed in its efforts to purchase Opel from The General, but the two companies are obviously still on speaking terms. Automotive News reports that Magna's Car Top Systems group has won the convertible contract for the Chevrolet Camaro. The General is reportedly expecting the droptop Camaro to account for 20,000 sales annually, matching the Ford Mustang as the top convertible sold in the States.

While Magna is the latest supplier to win the Camaro convertible bid it, isn't the first. Edscha AG originally won the contract, but the abysmal state of the convertible car market in the U.S. contributed to the German supplier filing for insolvency. And when we say the market for convertibles was bad in 2009, we're talking flat-line, bag it and tag it bad. Fewer than 50,000 convertibles were sold during the year, compared with over 200,000 sales only four years ago. GM switched the contract to the far healthier Magna to ensure that production of the upcoming Camaro variant isn't delayed. Magna will reportedly build the Camaro tops at GM's Corvette plant in Bowling Green, Kentucky with materials from Mexico.

It's hard to say if the Camaro will keep enough momentum in the next year to make 20,000 convertibles possible, but we're guessing a droptop version of the Bowtie pony car may well be the right recipe for keeping the Camaro lineup fresh. Now, about that Z28...

2010 Chevy Camaro Convertible -- Click above for high-res image gallery

Camaro5 forum member isszy caught shots of eight freshly minted Camaro convertibles in Australia. Spotted outside the Holden factory in Fisherman's bend, Melbourne, the poster said they all appeared to be left-hand-drive.

The tan-and-silver color combination isn't one we would have thought of - the black-roofed guy at the end is much more like it - but the roofline itself looks very good. The last we were informed by GM, the car should arrive next year as a 2011 model. Hat tip to Tim!

Chevrolet Camaro production delayed one month, convertible lives

General Motors sent out a directive to dealers today announcing a one-month production delay for the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro. According to the message, the reason for the postponement (production is set to begin on Monday, March 16) is not due to any legal problems or the current issues faced by the General, and instead is a "result of GM's efforts to ensure the Camaro exceeds the highest quality benchmarks established by GM for a new product."

A forum member at Camaro5 who supposedly obtained the document is also saying that the Camaro convertible, reported as dead back in November, will go on sale as a 2011 model. Power figures for the bent-eight variants are listed in the directive at 400 hp for the L99 and 426 hp for the LS3, with all 10,000 pre-orders completed by October. Thanks to all who tipped in!
