<br /> It's long been presumed that the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/chevrolet/">Chevrolet</a> <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/model/volt">Volt</a> (and its <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/03/03/geneva-2009-opel-goes-voltec-ampera-coming-in-late-2011/">Opel/Vauxhall Ampera twin</a>) would not be the only car rolling out of General Motors' Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant after late 2010. After all, Volt volumes are unlikely to be sufficient in the first several years to justify an entire plant. However, when a future product plant was leaked out after the 2007 UAW contract was signed, it was assumed the new Chevy Orlando would join the Volt. After all, the Orlando shares the Delta platform with the Volt and Cruze.<br /> <br /> Following the announcement Monday of the investment in the Detroit factory to build the Volt, <em>The Detroit News </em>believes it has learned that the next-generation Malibu will also be built in Detroit. The new <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/malibu">Malibu</a> is slated to debut in 2011 as a 2012 model. Current Malibu assembly takes place in Fairfax, Kansas. The General's Orion, Michigan plant had also been building the mid-sized sedan, but it is now being re-tooled build the next generation Aveo. The Kraft company recently held a competition inviting the public to name its new Vegemite cream cheese spinoff. The name that won, and made it to shelves, was "iSnack 2.0." Really. It took one day of public cacophony to encourage Kraft to change the name to "Cheesybite," but we hear you can still find jars of iSnack 2.0 if you're inclined. Why do we bring this up? Because sometimes we wonder what insights marketers are using to make product roll-out decisions.<br />
<br />
And what's that got to do with the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/model/volt">Chevy Volt</a>? The Chevy Volt's new theme song, <em>Chevy Volt and Me</em>. In this case, we know what the thought process was. Said the Volt's director of global marketing,<br />
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><em>Our goal is to craft that education [about the Volt] in a manner that is family friendly (as it should be because we are America's original mass /heart brand), entertaining and simple to understand for a rather sophisticated product.</em></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><em>A Volt song helps us to achieve those objectives. 'Chevy Volt and Me' explains what Volt is all about as a better EV in simple friendly terms.</em></p>
All right then. So it ain't <em>Eye of the Tiger</em> or <em>Diesel Power</em>, but it is catchy. <br /> If environmentally-friendly transportation is your thing, there's no place like California. Not only is the state home base to Tesla - the first company to genuinely demonstrate that hugging a tree and hugging the road needn't be mutually exclusive - it was also chosen by General Motors as the launch site for its EV1 and by Honda for the FCX Clarity. It should come as no great surprise, then, that GM has just announced that its latest earthmobile - the highly anticipated Chevrolet Volt - will launch in California first before being introduced in markets across the country.<br /> <br /> Not only with the Volt be available in the nation's largest car market before any other, but The General is also partnering with a number of local electric companies to accompany the rollout. Pacific Gas and Electric, Southern California Edison and Sacramento Municipal Utility District, together with the non-profit Electric Power Research Institute, will help demonstrate the benefits and practicality of the Volt's hybrid powertrain, thanks in part to a $30 million grant from the federal Department of Energy's Transportation Electrification Initiative. The votes have been cast, the tallies tallied and the winner determined: Viridian Joule <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/11/16/chevy-volt-color-contest-finalists/">will be the official name</a> of the silvery-green hue as seen on a slew of <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/model/volt">Chevrolet Volt</a> marketing material for what seems like the last decade or so. So, um, what does Viridian Joule mean? We'll let the winner himself, 40-year-old David Thomas of Sanford, Florida, explain:<br />

<div><em>I looked at the photo of the Volt on the contest web site and thought it looked emerald in color, which led to jewel and then to an alternate yet appropriate play on that word - joule.</em></div>
</blockquote>We needed a bit more help, so we looked up the word 'viridian'. So says Dictionary.com: <em>a long-lasting, bluish-green pigment, consisting of a hydrated oxide of chromium</em>. OK, fine. Joule wasn't so hard to figure out, but here's the definition anyway: <em>a unit of electrical energy equal to the work done when a current of one ampere is passed through a resistance of one ohm for one second</em>. So, there you have it.<br />

Undoubtedly, the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/model/volt">2011 Volt</a> is one of the most hotly anticipated new model launches in Chevrolet's long and storied history, and it will likely be seen as a halo model of sorts for <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/gm/">General Motors</a> as a whole. As we experienced first hand when we <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/11/30/2011-chevrolet-volt-quick-spin/">slid behind the wheel</a> of a preproduction Volt the other day, the car is well on its way to becoming a production reality, but actually getting the vehicle into the hands of customers will be another matter entirely.<br />

According to a report from <em>Automotive News</em>, GM is currently in the process of selecting which markets will get first crack at the Volt when it finally goes on sale in just under one year's time. Chevrolet division President Brent Dewar said that the automaker is looking at a number of factors to determine those unannounced target markets, including the existence of an EV charging infrastructure and available tax credits. After this initial launch, the rest of the citizenry will get its chance to see the USA in an electric Chevrolet.<br />

Three years ago this December we first walked into a Manhattan conference room for a background briefing on a new concept being developed by <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/gm/">General Motors</a> for the upcoming <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/detroit-auto-show/">Detroit Auto Show</a>. Earlier that year, the release of a documentary called <a href="http://www.whokilledtheelectriccar.com/"><em>Who Killed the Electric Car</em></a> made the then largest automaker in the world the subject of some well deserved criticism for its handling of the end of the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_Motors_EV1">EV1 program</a>. The movie and announcement of the all-electric <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/model/roadster">Tesla Roadster</a> lit a fire under GM to get back into the plug-in electric vehicle game.<br />

What we saw that day in NYC was a description of a new powertrain architecture then dubbed E-Flex. GM folk on hand that day included vehicle line executive Tony Posawatz and former VP for environmental affairs Beth Lowery. They explained that among the biggest lessons learned from the EV1 program were that range anxiety and lack of practicality would make a car like EV1 nearly impossible to sell in the mass market. The engineers went back to the drawing board to address those issues and came up with the extended range electric vehicle, or ER-EV. The <a href="http://green.autoblog.com/2007/01/07/detroit-auto-show-its-here-gms-plug-in-hybrid-is-the-chevy-v/">Volt concept</a> was approved for production mere months after it was revealed at the 2007 Detroit Auto Show. At this week's <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/LA-Auto-Show/">LA Auto Show</a>, GM is publicly showing the production intent version of the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/model/volt">Volt</a>. General Motors shocked the crowd at Cars &amp; Coffee this weekend by bringing out the <u><span style="text-decoration: underline;">2</span></u><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/model/volt">011 Chevy Volt</a>. Representatives on hand said this is the same car that will be on display at the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/la-auto-show/">LA Auto Show</a> next week. They added that this is a pre-production model with a lot of development miles on it. For all that, it looked pretty good, especially given the wet conditions. We were disappointed that nobody faked an electric shock when touching the car in the damp lot.<br />

Lack of hijinks aside, it seemed most people at the show liked the Volt, although several walked right past it, not realizing what it was. Good or bad, as important as this car is to GM, it looks pretty much like any other midsize sedan. On a day where Suzuki brought out all of their SEMA show cars and Tesla brought down a Roadster and Roadster Sport, the Volt and the Equinox fuel cell vehicle behind it still managed to draw a pretty big crowd. Electric cars are for those who would rather drive slow, boring commuters that don't consume fossil fuels and therefore don't spew pollutants from their tailpipes. Gas-powered cars - and especially those wearing time-honored badges like SS, R/T or GT - are for those who prefer fire-breathing, tire-screeching performance and care much more about nitrous oxide than nitrogen oxide. Right? Not so fast, says Bob Lutz.<br />

When asked whether or not Chevy could shock the performance crowd with an SS version of the upcoming Volt, Lutz said, "I would not discount that possibility." That's as close as you're going to get to an admission of intent this early in the game. Lutz goes on to suggest that the Voltec powertrain will allow for plenty of on-demand power. "[I]f we want to sacrifice a little bit of fuel efficiency in the interest of performance and still get over 200 miles per gallon, we can do that any time."<br />

Following the same logical train of thought, we could certainly see a V-Series of the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/11/09/breaking-i-detroit-news-i-says-gm-will-build-cadillac-converj/">Cadillac Converj</a>. Take a close look at the Chevy Volt in the photo above. We've seen it a number of times already but we've never said anything about the color. While it's predominantly silver, it does have a green (or more specifically emerald) tint in it. According to General Motors spokesman David Darovitz, this will be one of the launch colors for the Volt and, in fact, will be exclusive to the company's extended-range electric vehicles. Anyone who has ever bought paint, sorted through a box of Crayolas or ordered a car knows that every hue, no matter how subtle, needs a unique name. This Volt color is no different. <br />
<br />
GM wants to include Volt fans in the naming process and is running a contest on <span class="s1"><a href="http://www.chevroletvoltage.com">www.chevroletvoltage.com</a></span> starting today. Between now and November 4, people can submit their color name suggestions on the site. GM will sort through submissions and pick out three finalists. Between Nov. 16 and Dec. 1 you can then vote for your choice among the finalists. The three finalists will be flown to LA where the winner will be announced on the eve of the LA Auto Show press days. That person will be among the first people in the world outside of GM who actually gets to drive (not just ride along) one of the pre-production Volts. <br /> We're not entirely certain, but it sure looks like it. General Motors recently released a YouTube vid explaining what makes a Chevrolet a Chevrolet that shows a series a of sweeping shots that catches bowtie specials like the Corvette Grand Sport and the 2010 Camaro. At around 1:05, the camera focuses on the C-Pillar of a Camaro, and as the shot pans across the coupe's greenhouse, a quick glimpse of two production-ready Chevy crossover vans is given.<br /> <br /> The crossover on the right looks a whole lot like the Chevy Orlando concept <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/10/02/paris-2008-chevy-orlando-concept-outdoes-the-hhr/">debuted at the 2008 Paris Motor Show</a> last fall, which also looks an awful lot like the vehicle captured in these <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/gallery/2011-chevy-orlando-spy-shots/#4">spy photos</a> below. The Orlando is set to replace the HHR in Chevy showrooms by 2011 with seating for seven and car-like fuel economy. <br /> <br /> The crossover on the left could be even more interesting, as it appears to share styling cues with the Volt, an example of which is parked next to it. Could this be a crossover with the automaker's extended range EV Voltec hardware underhood? Is it the Chevy version of the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/08/06/buick-teases-baby-enclave-promises-2011-plug-in-hybrid-version/">plug-in Buick crossover</a> we heard about last week? Apparently, we're not the only ones <a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/2009/08/11/chevy-volt-gets-230-mpg-but-how/">trying to figure out</a> the exact methodology that was used to determine the supposed <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/08/11/gm-ceo-henderson-announces-the-volt-will-get-230-mpg-in-the/">230 mile per gallon city rating</a> claimed by General Motors for the upcoming Chevy Volt. In response to a query from the boys at <em>Green Car Advisor</em>, the EPA issued the following statement:<br />

<div><em>EPA has not tested a Chevy Volt and therefore cannot confirm the fuel economy values claimed by GM. EPA does applaud GM's commitment to designing and building the car of the future - an American-made car that will save families money, significantly reduce our dependence on foreign oil and create good-paying American jobs. We're proud to see American companies and American workers leading the world in the clean energy innovations that will shape the 21st century economy.</em></div>
</blockquote>Although it deserves noting that GM CEO Fritz Henderson didn't exactly say the 230 mpg rating was an official figure from the EPA, it sure is being bandied about as if it were gospel in the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/08/07/what-is-230-gm-knows-but-isnt-say/">huge marketing campaign</a> launched ahead of today's announcement.<br />
<br />
When contacted for comment, GM told AutoblogGreen that the EPA is not backing away from the 230 numbers and that it's unlikely that the EPA will come out with a much lower number when they actually get to run a Volt through the official cycle. Further, GM believes that coming out with the 230 rating at this point in time is one way to change people's perception of what kind of car the Volt is.<br />

As part of the massive media blitz being rolled out today by <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/gm/">General Motors</a> in preparation for the new <a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/2009/08/11/gm-ceo-henderson-announces-the-volt-will-get-230-mpg-in-the/">230-mpg Chevy Volt</a> and some B20 biodiesel trucks (more on these later), we finally got to see the two chargers that will come with the Volt when it becomes available in November 2010. <br />
<br />
With each Volt purchase you'll get one of these two chargers - either a portable 120V charging unit that can plug into any outlet in the house (or, more likely, the garage) and can also be carried along in the vehicle, or a dedicated 240V unit (seen above) that will require installation into a more powerful connection, just like a dryer. Of course, the 240V unit will charge up the Volt quicker than the portable unit, but GM knows that customers will have different needs and so wants to offer options. That coiled orange cord on the 240V unit might also be an option, along with a regular straight cord by next November. Read all about these chargers after the jump.<br />

<br /> Not content to let General Motors grab <em>all </em>the shiny happy tree-huggy headlines today with its <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/08/11/gm-ceo-henderson-announces-the-volt-will-get-230-mpg-in-the/">230 mpg claim</a> for the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/model/volt">Chevy Volt</a> in city operation, the gang manning the <a href="http://twitter.com/NissanEVs">NissanEVs</a> Twitter account needled GM's range-extended EV messiah, tweeting:<br /> <br />
<div align="center"><em><span class="status-body"><span class="entry-content">Nissan Leaf = 367 mpg, no tailpipe, and no gas required. Oh yeah, and it'll be affordable too!</span></span></em></div>
<br /> Given that <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/08/11/chevy-volt-gets-230-mpg-but-how/">the methodology</a> of how the feds will ultimately arrive at the official mileage numbers (or mileage equivalents) for many of these next-gen greenmobiles is not yet finalized, we'll take all the hype and scoreboard pointing with a grain of salt until we see actual, final numbers posted at <a href="http://www.fueleconomy.gov">FuelEconomy.gov</a>. (Nissan says its <a href="http://twitter.com/NissanEVs/status/3248710288">367 mpg figure</a> was derived by using the Department of Energy formula.)<br /> <br /> In any case, a Twitter spitball fight between <a href="http://twitter.com/GMBlogs">GMBlogs</a> and <a href="http://twitter.com/NissanEVs">NissanEVs</a> over this stuff would be kind of entertaining to watch. Neither General Motors nor the EPA are making declarative statements about how, exactly, the 2011 Chevy Volt will achieve it's much-touted <a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/2009/08/11/gm-ceo-henderson-announces-the-volt-will-get-230-mpg-in-the/">230 mpg</a> rating that was announced today. GM's most clear statement (available in full after the break) says that some consumers "may be able to be in pure electric mode on a daily basis without having to use any gas" and that "key to high-mileage performance is for a Volt driver to plug into the electric grid at least once each day." <br />
<br />
Without access to the actual method that the EPA is tentatively going to apply to plug-in vehicles (we have requests for clarification out to the EPA), all that GM's Dave Darovitz would tell us is that the number is "based on city cycles and we're not really talking in detail yet." Instead, the press release says that: <br />

<div><em>Under the new methodology being developed, EPA weights plug-in electric vehicles as traveling more city miles than highway miles on only electricity. The EPA methodology uses kilowatt hours per 100 miles traveled to define the electrical efficiency of plug-ins. Applying EPA's methodology, GM expects the Volt to consume as little as 25 kilowatt hours per 100 miles in city driving. At the U.S. average cost of electricity (approximately 11 cents per kWh), a typical Volt driver would pay about $2.75 for electricity to travel 100 miles, or less than 3 cents per mile</em>.</div>
</blockquote>Frank Weber, vehicle chief engineer for the Volt, told AutoblogGreen that the EPA's method takes into account the two extremes: People who plug in every chance they get and therefore barely ever need gasoline and people who never plug in (if you're buying a Volt and never plug it in, we'd like to offer you a bridge or two. Call us). By figuring out what the average driver will do with the Volt, the EPA has declared that 230 mpg is reasonable. Weber said, "The number is in the ballpark, it is not unrealistic. The moment you are driving shorter trips, or you go on longer trips and look at your average fuel economy, this number is achievable." <br />
<br />
Keep in mind, that 230 mpg number is only valid in city driving, though GM claims that the Volt's combined mpg rating will still be in the triple-digit range. Though the EPA has yet to finalize its methodology, we have come across a calculation that makes sense. According to a <a href="http://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/volt-birth-watch-155-the-230-mpg-alleged-game-changer/#comment-1522148">commenter on TTAC.com</a>, the EPA would first drive a PHEV with a full charge until it reaches a charge-sustaining mode, after which it completes a normal cycle of 11 miles. The Volt, therefore, would presumably go 40 miles before activating charge-sustaining mode, and then travel another 11 miles for a total of 51 miles. Thus, GM can claim the Volt will achieve 230 mpg based on 51 miles of driving during which only .22 gallons of fuel would be used. Likewise, if we know the Volt would use .22 gallons of fuel while traveling 11 miles in charge-sustaining mode, we can calculate that it would achieve 50 mpg while traveling with the generator on. <br />
<br />
However, as you can read in this detailed <a href="http://www.nrel.gov/vehiclesandfuels/vsa/pdfs/40377.pdf">PDF</a> from NREL, there is much more to think about in calculating the fuel economy of a PHEV than simply how far it can go on a single charge and then what its "regular" mpg rating is. We'll just have to wait until the EPA finalizes its methodology for testing these types of vehicles before we can say for certain how GM arrived at the magic number of 230 mpg.<br />

Over the next two years, GM will be launching 25 new models in its four remaining "core" brands (Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick and GMC). <br /> <br /> After the webcast ends, we'll going over to the design dome for a preview of the new large XTS and small ATS models from Cadillac. The latter will slot in below the CTS and be aimed directly at the BMW 3-series with rear- and all-wheel drive. The XTS is expected to be based on a stretched Epsilon II platform.<br /> <br /> The biggest bombshell is Henderson's announcement that the "230" marketing campaign floating around for the past week is related to the 2011 Chevrolet Volt. The EPA has released a new methodology for determining a draft fuel economy standard for extended-range EVs like the Volt, and under this new procedure, the Volt will have a composite urban fuel economy rating of 230 mpg! On the electric side, the Volt will consume 25 kW-hours per 100 miles. That makes the Volt the first car ever to get a triple digit fuel economy rating. <br /> <br /> According to Frank Weber, vehicle chief engineer for the Volt, the number is based on combined electric only driving and charge sustaining mode with the engine running. He declined to get specific about the proportions, but did say that the urban cycle would be predominantly EV only. The EPA has been studying real world vehicle usage and is developing the formulas to try and provide a representative number of what most customers could expect to achieve. <br />We don't have to tell you how important the <a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/tag/chevy+volt/">Chevrolet Volt</a> is to General Motors. Even if the model isn't likely to turn a profit for many years, the plug-in electric car's success or failure is likely to be seen as a crucial indicator of GM's post-bankruptcy prospects in the eyes of many. This being the case, it's not surprising that automaker is practically throwing everything it's got at the project. According to Chief Engineer Andrew Farah, the Volt team is currently working on getting the sound and feel of the driving experience just right. Speaking to <em>Automotive News</em>, Farah said:<br /><blockquote><em>The engine, not being directly connected to the foot, is one of the things we continue to tune. We don't want it to be discomforting to people. There is an expectation of what happens when you put your accelerator to the floor in the way the car sounds and feels. We've got the feel. We've got the feel of a sports car. The sound part and the way the engine plays into that perception is one of the areas we have to work on</em>.<br /></blockquote>Clearly, creating a plug-in car with mass-market appeal isn't as simple as bolting an electric motor and a bunch of batteries into an existing chassis. People have come to expect certain things to happen as an automobile is driven, and GM needs to find the right compromise between zero-emissions technology and time-honored driving dynamics. Further complicating the issue is the tremendous weight of the car's T-shaped battery pack. Farah explains:<br /><blockquote><em>Here's the thing to remember: When you put the battery in, it actually lowers the center of gravity of the car. There are a thousand reasons why heavy is bad, but a few why it is good. <br />Now that the Chevrolet Volt has progressed to the point where vehicles with near-production bodywork are <a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/2009/06/24/volt-chief-engineer-takes-first-drive-in-integration-prototype/">running around</a>, the time has come for the crew to begin ironing out details like the ride height and spring rates that will directly influence the plug-in hybrid's handling.<br /><br />Regarding these points, chief engineer Andrew Farah has some interesting things to say about the Volt and the way GM will position it against its competitors. For instance, Farah notes (in reference to the Toyota Prius and Honda Insight), "Our chassis is much more sporty than either of the other vehicles."<br /><br />Farah also comments on a couple of changes to the car's exterior design that eagle-eyed parties had noticed, such as the relocation of the plug from the front fender to under a flap in the traditional location for a gas cap. <br />Now that the California Air Resources Board (CARB) <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/09/26/2011-chevy-volt-one-step-closer-to-being-rated-at-100-mpg/">has an agreement</a> with General Motors regarding how to measure the fuel mileage of the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/09/16/officially-official-gm-reveals-the-2011-chevy-volt/">2011 Chevy Volt</a>, our attention turns to the EPA, which now has to decide what official mileage rating will appear on the new car's window sticker and how to determine what that number will be. The first recommendation comes from the Automotive X-Prize, the foundation of which will award $10 million from Progressive Insurance to the winner of its competition to design a production-viable car that people would want to drive that gets 100 MPGe or more. <br /><br />What's with that little 'e' after the familiar miles per gallon? Basically, the X-Prize crew wants to convert all units of energy to a figure that's equivalent to the power from a gallon of gas. That way, a car's powerplant - regardless of where it gets that energy from - earns a rating that can be easily compared with everything else. So, EPA, the ball's in your court... still.<br /><br />Psst - GM, maybe you should enter the Volt in the X-Prize competition.
