Imagine dumping $100,000 into a 2010 Chevrolet Camaro, building a 485-cubic-inch engine topped with a Kenne Bell supercharger and adding coilovers to all four corners, only to learn that your hot rod wasn't different enough. Such a scenario played out for Bill Rombauts and Dave Sherer, but instead of adding more glam to their investment, the two took a decidedly different approach.

The two decided to turn their $100K Camaro into a rat rod, essentially beating down the pony car over the course of a week to make it look worse for wear. The result is a new-world beater that boasts some serious buzz right in time for the Hot Rod Power Tour, but before this rat rod hit the circuit, it spent some time on the dyno.

Beyond the jump is video of the Patina'd Camaro as it hits the dyno. The Kenne Bell-supercharger equipped engine, which boasts 16.3 pounds of boost, gives this beat down Camaro an impressive 804 horsepower and 765 pound-feet of torque to the rear wheels. That should be enough pop to make this Camaro a real hand full at the local drag strip, and we're guessing it will attract a bit of attention on the Power Tour. Ed Welburn is the current head of design at General Motors, which means he has the tall task of pointing the company into the future without abandoning timeless designs by names like Harley Earl. As an exercise in getting in touch with his roots, Welburn has worked up a list of the top 10 Chevrolet designs of all time.

The list is populated with all the probable starters from Chevy's century-long past. From the 1912 Classic Six, the first car to carry the Chevrolet name, to the 1936 Suburban and the 2011 Camaro, Welburn gives his impression of the importance of each design.

Welburn has been surrounded by cars his entire life, from his youth in his father's body shop in Philadelphia to taking the helm at Chevrolet's design department in 2003. Welburn has worked for General Motors since he graduated from Howard University in the early 1970s, so he his connection with Chevrolet designs, ahem, runs deep.

Officially Official: Chevrolet Camaro beats Ford Mustang in 2010 sales

In the American sports car landscape, the Chevrolet Camaro is the king... of sales for 2010. For the first time since 1985, the Camaro has outsold its arch rival, the Ford Mustang. In fact, Chevrolet sold 7,655 more of its sporty coupes than the Blue Oval. General Motors moved 81,371 Camaros compared to 73,716 Mustangs.

Both automakers have reasons to celebrate, however, because sales for each model are up year over year. Compared to 2009, Mustang sales climbed 10.6 percent and Camaro sales soared by 31.9 percent. Ford and General Motors are looking at positive numbers across the board, with the exception of GM's now-defunct brands. Heck... even now-defunct Mercury sales rose one percent in 2010.

Ford: Yes, Camaro will outsell Mustang this year

It's true. For the first time since 1985, the Chevrolet Camaro will outsell the Ford Mustang in 2010. Besides giving the Bowtie Boys something to crow about, it also makes us genuinely intrigued to watch how 2011 unfolds, considering that Chevy plans to unleash its convertible and Z28 Camaro editions.

Somewhat surprisingly, Ford doesn't seem too bothered. According to Ford sales analyst George Pipas, "If that was important, we wouldn't have taken a shift off at Flat Rock," which is where the plant that assembles the Mustang is located. That's a somewhat dubious statement, since building too many vehicles in one model year only leads to problems for the next... In any case, this is a trend worth monitoring.

It's that time of year, kids. Horsepower-crazy General Motors fans are anxiously dancing around their mailboxes waiting for the latest edition of the company's performance parts catalog to arrive. As with past years, the glossy pages are packed from margin to margin with everything you need to give your Bow Tie a little extra giddy up. For 2011, the catalog has fully embraced the Camaro, and a pair of dealer-tweaked versions of the Chevrolet muscle car show exactly what you can do with little more than a crate engine and some spare time.

DeNooyer Chevrolet in New York decided to plop an LSX454 in their orange Camaro, coupled to a six-speed manual transmission via the same clutch used in the mighty Corvette ZR-1. The car turns over 520 horsepower and 530 pound-feet of torque at the rear wheels thanks to a tune-port fuel injection system.

But that's downright child's play compared to what the minds at NeSmith Chevrolet in Georgia cooked up. Those wrenches plopped an LS9 behind the Camaro's headlights. With minor tweaking, the supercharged V8 is kicking out right at 700 horsepower, and NeSmith threw in beefier axles and a Baer brake system to bring the whole party to a stop. Report: Chevy Camaro poised to outsell Ford Mustang for first time in 25 years

It's been a quarter-century since the last time it happened, but Chevrolet's reborn Camaro appears set to steal away the yearly pony car sales crown from the Ford Mustang.

According to AutoWeek, the Bowtie Brigade has cleared 75,685 Camaro sales through the end of November, while the Blue Oval has shifted 68,264 units. Extrapolating the monthly sales totals to the end of December, AW estimates that Chevrolet will finish 2010 with around 82,500 sales, besting the Ford's estimate of 74,500. Trailing the muscle car pack in sales is Dodge's Challenger lineup, trending at around 36,000 units.

There has certainly been pent-up demand for the Camaro among consumers after its prolonged absence, but what's even more impressive about its yearly sales total is that if the lead holds, the Chevy will have outsold the Ford and the Dodge with far fewer special editions and no convertible bodystyle like the Mustang. (A droptop Camaro is slated to go on sale next year, and a high-performance Z28 variant is also expected).

You can admit it: None of you thought "the perfect Camaro" would come from Bulgarian tuner Nasko Vilner. Neither did we. Vilnus owns a company that designs vehicle interiors, and as the first Bulgarian with a 2010 Chevy Camaro - a V6 manual - he decided he needed to do something special with it.

Vilner has focused his efforts inside, slathering just about everything in Nubuck and Nappa, with accent lighting and hints of chrome here and there, like the filigreed door handle. He didn't leave the outside completely alone, swapping the front brakes for eight-piston units and switching LEDs for the halogens. It won't be to everyone's taste, but it's ain't half bad and the workmanship appears to be top notch. It's also got one of the best intros to a press release we've read in a while. You'll find that after the jump, and a gallery of high-res photos below.

The 2010 Chevrolet Camaro has been in U.S. dealerships for over a year now, and demand for Chevy's newest pony car has been strong from the get-go. And though the Camaro is based off the Australian Zeta platform and built in Oshawa, Canada, it still rocks a Bowtie badge and carries a 6.2-liter small block V8 under the hood. That makes the Camaro an American pony car in our book; one that will (finally) officially go on sale in England early next year.

But before our allies to the east get a chance to pick up a Camaro of their own, Fifth Gear host Jason Plato took the reins of a Bumblebee-flavored Camaro out on the track. Hit the jump to watch Plato show no mercy to the 3,860-pound coupe. In typical UK-reviewer-on-American-car-ese, we definitely hear words like "lazy" and "heavy," but Plato still looks like a very happy man behind the wheel. If you like smoking tires, oversteer and burnouts you'll definitely like this video.

Edmunds is honoring the top new vehicles of 2010 with its first annual Launch Breakthrough Award, and the online research site gives the winning nod to the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro. The award is given based on 18 different factors, including "pricing, sales, market share, dealer profit margins, incentives, consumer consideration, consumer ratings, inventory levels and residual values." Senior Analyst Ray Zhou says the award "recognizes the vehicle that had the most successful introduction of the past year." The Camaro captured the top prize with consistently strong demand from the minute it hit the showroom floor.

In total, Edmunds picked the top 10 new launches for 2010 among 54 eligible vehicles. To be eligible for the Launch Breakthrough Award, the new vehicle had to receive an all-new model or a complete refresh during calendar year 2009 (through December 1, 2009) with at least 100 sales per month. Domestics absolutely dominated the top 10 as well, with five General Motors products and two Fords. The second place winner went to the Porsche Panamera, while Toyota took the last two spots with the RX 350 and the Prius. Conducting utterly inappropriate comparison tests is completely par for the course at Top Gear. After all, these were the guys that pitted a Ford Fiesta against a Chevrolet Corvette and a Jaguar XK120 against a Vincent Black Shadow and a train. In this week's latest episode Richard Hammond samples the new Chevrolet Camaro SS with its lovely 6.2-liter small-block V8 and then pulls out a slightly different kind of 6.2-liter V8 powered car.

Frankly, we doubt many (if any!) people are actually cross-shopping the Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG against the Camaro SS, but it sure is entertaining to watch the big German power-sliding around the air-strip test track at the hands of The Stig. With any luck, this episode will be the last time that we get to hear the Stig lapping to the less-than-dulcet tones of the vuvuzela. There are a couple of salient points about the new Chevrolet Camaro that are inescapable. First, it has the looks that kill. And whether or not you dig the Camaro's aesthetics, you can't deny it stands out from the crowd. Actually, that's not the right way to put it - a new Camaro in a mall parking lot is like an economists' convention crashed by Kiss.

However, much like the infamous New York rock band that always looked mean and scary but actually wrote some pretty pop-centric stuff, the Camaro might look like a sports car, but it's not. Sure, in SS trim you get General Motors' awesome LS3 6.2-liter V8 and all the power that entails (426 horsepower, 420 lb-ft of torque), but the choppy suspension and near-two-ton bulk drag the Camaro down from the sports car it could be. And if the recently reborn for 2011 Mustang GT is any indication, the sports car it should be.

But what if... What if you could change the suspension, reduce unsprung weight and up the power to deal with the Camaro's bulk? What would you have then? Could some serious tuning turn the Camaro into a serious sports car? Legendary Corvette tuner Callaway has taken on just that task with their new SC572 (manual) and SC552 (automatic) new age ponies. We drove 'em both, and the results are... jump.

Ford Mustang sales top Chevrolet Camaro in May

Ford seems to have found the special ingredients it needed for the Mustang to spank the Chevrolet Camaro in sales. Thanks to a heap of power from a range of efficient new engines, the Blue Oval's pony car managed to top the Bow Tie's bruiser in sales for the first time since the Camaro sauntered back onto the market last year. Last month, Ford managed to move 10,225 Mustangs off of dealer lots and into the hands of the power-crazed public. Chevrolet, on the other hand, saw only 8,931 Camaros drive off into the sunset.

While the Mustang tended to rank higher in comparisons against the Camaro even before the new engines hit the scene for 2011, American buyers responded to the big power numbers and menacing style of the General Motors muscle car. Now that the Ford is cranking out slightly more grunt and marginally better fuel economy, Chevrolet may find itself playing catch up for the rest of the year. Not to worry, Bow Tie fans. It won't be long before GM's spicing up the Camaro lineup with the likes of a drop-top and the oft-rumored Z/28 may still be in the cards, too.

Chevrolet products are no strangers to hydraulics, but models that get the height-altering technology usually go by names like Impala or Caprice, not Camaro - and they are usually decades old, not 2010 models.

We say 'usually' because apparently an Arizona lad has gone and thrown some extra pistons underneath his gunmetal gray Camaro SS, and the result is a pony car that goes from limbo to lofty in a couple of secs. It nothing else, we can't help but think it'd make a great doppelganger Decepticon for Transformers 3. Follow the jump to check out the vid, but sadly, there's no three-wheel motion on display

How much horsepower is enough? Many would say that the 725 horsepower in the Hennessey HPE700 Camaro should have enough oomph to quell just about anyone's desires for straight line speed, especially for a street car. Then again, we're talking about a car built by John Hennessey, who surely spends every waking minute concocting ideas on how to get every last horsepower out of cars. His latest creation, the HPE800 Twin-Turbo Camaro, puts out an amazing 815 horsepower and 788 pound-feet of torque thanks to twin turbochargers strapped to a 415ci stroker motor and a host of other upgrades.

Not enough for you? Hennessey will build you an HPE1000 version complete with a twin-turbo 427ci LSX block and just about their entire catalog of go-fast parts for Chevy's musclecar. They recently strapped one down to a dyno, and the resulting numbers are just plain ridiculous: 847 horsepower and 801 lb-ft torque at the rear wheels. New Bumblebee Camaro spotted on set of TF3

If there's one thing the paparazzi is good for, it's stalking the likes of Megan Fox. And while we could usually care less about the comings and goings of the Xbox crowd's favorite young starlet, occasionally she wanders into our neck of the interwebs by getting dangerously close to cars like the new Bumblebee Camaro. Fox is currently shooting the next installment of the explosion-rich Transformers saga, and was spotted parading around what appears to be the next iteration of everyone's favorite plucky Autobot.

Judging from the photos, the biggest changes to the car include a new stripe design that carries over onto the roof of the car, as well as a not-so-subtle rear wing. The next Bumblebee looks to retain its concept-car sideview mirrors, though a selection of carbon-fiber aero additions join the changes as well. If you look close, you can spot Autobot badges in all the right places, too.

Is this what the next Chevrolet Camaro Bumblebee Edition will look like? Given how closely GM is tied into the franchise, it wouldn't surprise us.

Earlier this week we told you about Camaro5fest, the largest gathering of current generation Camaros and their owners. While GM's big news from the event was a three mile long parade of Camaros, others, like Lingenfelter Performance Engineering, were all about the drag racing at the South Georgia Motorsports Park.

The Decatur, IN maker of go-fast Chevys brought out their new LS9-powered 2010 Camaro packing 855 horsepower. The supercharged V8 has been fortified with various LPE performance parts like a more aggressive camshaft, CNC ported heads, JE forged aluminum pistons and a smaller supercharger pulley. Despite being equipped with a six-speed manual, the Lingenfelter Camaro posted a best run of 10.36 seconds at 139.5 mph. Thankfully the camcorders were rolling, and we have visual evidence of the car's capabilities. You can see a similar run (10.41 at 139.9 mph) in the video posted after the jump.

Last weekend, Camaro5 sponsored the world's largest gathering of fifth-generation Chevrolet Camaros and their owners in Valdosta, Georgia. Over 1,000 ~~of the cars~~ fans and 500 cars (Thanks, Chris!) descended on the town, and Chevrolet itself stopped by for the shindig. The company brought along a few treats for the crowd, including folks like Al Oppenheiser, Peter Kosak, John Fitzpatrick and Cheryl Pilcher - all names tied to bringing the car to life.

Not only did members of the Camaro team show up to meet the crowd and answer a few questions, but a ~~heavily camo'd~~ 2011 Camaro, VIN 002, was brought along as well. Attendees also got to drive through Valdosta in one big parade - a stunt that resulted in a line of 2010 Camaros three miles long. At the end of the drive, Camaro5 hosted drag races, autocross events and a car show at South Georgia Motorsports Park. V6 Throwdown: Motor Trend pits Hyundai Genesis against 2011 Mustang, 2010 Camaro and Challenger

By now, we've all read the various incarnations of the muscle car shoot-out, which means that had the crew from Motor Trend decided to simply line up the V6 versions of the 2010 Dodge Challenger, 2010 Chevrolet Camaro and 2011 Ford Mustang against one another, odds are you could have picked the podium without breaking a sweat (or reading the article). And that's why we're guessing the editors decided to throw in the Hyundai Genesis Coupe for spice.

At first glance, this feels like the easiest game of "which one doesn't belong" ever played, but on closer inspection, the Genesis 3.8 looks right at home among Michigan's Neapolitan pack of muscle cars. The Hyundai boasts 305 horsepower from its sizable V6, which is more than any of the big domestics. How does it fair against the entry Mopar, Bowtie and Blue Oval? We'll go ahead and spoil it for you by saying that MT didn't just invite the Korean coupe to the dance. It named it belle of the ball, too.

Why did the Genesis Coupe take the gold, even ahead of re-powered 2011 Mustang? According to MT, the Hyundai simply feels more like a sports car than the rest of the suspects. Funny - we thought they were testing muscle cars...

2010 Camaro Indy 500 pace car entering limited production

Some of the most desirable Chevrolet Camaros are the factory-made replicas to celebrate the pony car's inclusion in the racing world as a pace car. And it looks like we have yet another pace car rep to add to our growing list of potential collectibles with General Motors' announcement that it will build 200 or fewer 2010 Chevy Camaro Indianapolis 500 Pace Car Limited Edition models.

Each of the Pace Car models will be based on an SS with the RS appearance package. A 400 horsepower 6.2-liter V8 engine will be mated up with a six-speed automatic transmission (what, no manual?), with power put to the ground through 20-inch polished aluminum wheels. A throwback-style front grille recalls the old '67 Pace Cars, and the whole shebang will be painted in Inferno Orange, including the engine cover.

Premium floor mats with accent colors
2010 Indianapolis 500 event logo decal on both doors and embroidered on driver and passenger headrests
2010 Indianapolis 500 event logo badges on front fenders

Making a mockery of the new Chevrolet Camaro "Convertible"

Autoblog reader Joe Lopez spied what looked to be a Chevrolet Camaro Convertible prototype out on the street. Jazzed about his sighting, he trailed the car as it pulled into a local Detroit-area Target store. Camera in hand, he moved in for pics. That's likely when the sheer horror of the situation before him struck with the force of a Toyota Prius driven by Jim Sikes.

This was no Camaro Convertible.

Someone had done the unthinkable (and yet, at the same time, inevitable): They had fitted a 2010 Chevrolet Camaro LS with a fabric mock top. Joe's no dummy. He took the photos anyway, and posted them on his blog, 5thGenCamaro. Then he emailed us, so here we are.

As we all know, tastes vary. That established, in our books, at least, mock tops are only moderately less revolting than the ill-advised landau roof. As you can see, this is one of the more super-classy installations, including false roof bows and a ring of tonneau snaps - because those really scream modernity. The shark fin roof antenna poking through the fabric is the proverbial cherry atop this turd sundae.

As you'll see in the gallery below, there's a real convertible - a Chrysler Sebring - parked to the Camaro's right. We believe we can confidently say that this is the only time a Chrysler Sebring actually looks better to us than a new Chevy Camaro. And that, friends, is frightening. If it were a Buick Lacrosse - even the new one - we probably wouldn't care. It'd almost... belong. But this? Who does this? Click on the gallery below, then avert your eyes.
