2008 Dodge Viper SRT10 production underway

Click image for hi-res gallery including 30 new pics!

Chrysler has announced the official manufacturing launch of the 2008 Dodge Viper SRT10 at the Connor Ave Assembly Plant in Detroit. In the press release after the jump, you'll learn that the Viper is hand-assembled by a team of 48 UAW "Craftspersons" (political correctness is wonderful, isn't it?) as the supercar traverses 26 stations on its 705-foot assembly line. Of course, some of you might find the car itself a lot more interesting than the manufacturing process behind it. 600-horsepower 8.4L V10s tend to do that, at least for us. Along with today's announcement, Dodge released a mess 'o new pics of its most potent snake yet, so click the gallery below for a look. That's the work of a master craftsman craftsperson. We're totally liking the green, too. (Well, except for Shunk.)

600 horsepower for $83,145: '08 Dodge Viper gets priced

Man, and here we thought that the 600-horse Bentley Continental GT Speed was a bargain at $199K. Dragtimes.com has reportedly obtained the pricing info for the revamped, more powerful 2008 Dodge Viper. The news is good, as The New Chrysler's flagship tire-melter will start at just $83,145 for the Viper SRT10 Roadster. Want the coupe? Pony up a little more: $83,895. Bang-for-the-buck, thy name is Viper.

Detroit Auto Show: 2008 Dodge Viper -- with extra bite!

Click the image for the full-sized gallery.

In their final press conference of the Detroit show, the Chrysler Group focused exclusively on the Dodge brand, and the highlight was the official unveiling of the 2008 Dodge Viper. Driven onstage by NEXTEL Cup driver Kurt Busch, the new Viper SRT-10 dons the brass knuckles to throw down with the Corvette Z06, over which it now holds a 100-horsepower advantage because, you know, 500 horsepower is so passé. The new snake improves upon itself with a revised 8.4L V10 that now dishes out 600 horsepower and 560 lbs of torque. That, in turn, facilitates 0-60 time of under four seconds and a 0-100-0 time that comes in at under twelve ticks. Let the horsepower wars continue! This is fun to watch.

Spy Shots: 2008 Dodge Viper

This spy shot, posted Friday by Winding Road, appears to show a powertrain test mule for the '08 Viper. (More photos here.)

The massive hood vents add fuel to the speculation that the fourth-generation snake will get a serious horsepower boost, possibly with help from the clever chaps at McLaren Performance Technologies. Allpar.com points to the McLarenized V10 Viper shown at this year's Detroit Auto Show, and rated at a stout 615 hp, as an indication of what's to come, with a likely target of 650 hp for the 2008 car.

No wonder the Corvette gang are working on the "Blue Devil"...
