If you've been following the Toyota Tundra rust saga, you're aware that NHSTA recently requested data from Toyota about the purported frame corrosion affecting 2000 and 2001 models. Today, Toyota has extended that recall to include the 2002-03 model years, saying that a small number of trucks could suffer from frame corrosion that could cause the spare tire to detach from its underbody housing. That brings the total up to 110,000 Tundras located in 20 cold-weather states and the District of Columbia.

Toyota will begin an inspection program next month which will run through January of 2010, and if you're driving one of the affected pickups, you can get all the details in the press release below the fold. Hat tip to Mike from Pickuptrucks.com.
Continue reading Toyota extends Tundra rust recall to include 2000-03 models, totalling 110,000 trucks

Toyota extends Tundra rust recall to include 2000-03 models, totalling 110,000 trucks originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 24 Nov 2009 17:27:00 EST. The sporty coupe will hit the scene in the U.S. just as Americans are becoming more interested in rear-wheel-drive vehicles again. And it's also a small car in a time when buyers are practically abandoning their SUVs on the freeway. BMW faithful are excited too, as the 1-Series seems as if it will channel the much revered 2002 like a long lost loved one. This video shows similarities between the two cars that stretch from the past to the present. It's a kick ass minute of footage filled with everything from 1968 oversteer to 2007 CGI. That number has since swelled to 78 over the last few months, and now includes two reported injuries as a result of the Passat's penchant for self-immolation.

Of the 345,000 Passat affected by the issue, Volkswagen has received over 14,000 warranty claims. NHTSA has received three different engine and ignition systems from the automaker, which is also in the process of investigating the cause. Only four- and six-cylinder models seem to be affected, so those of you who plunked down the extra cash for the W8 can rest easy.

[Source: Detroit News]
NHTSA digging deeper into Volkswagen Passat engine fires originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 02 Oct 2007 16:03:00 EST. A lot has changed since the 2002 was introduced in the late 60s, but BMW is looking to stoke the flames of physics enthusiasts, beginning with the importation of the 1-series to the U.S.

A recent article in Automotive News contends that BMW is well aware of its waning performance image, especially in the realm of compact vehicles. The 3-series can hardly be considered an entry-level ride anymore, and the upcoming 1-series may be able to fill the niche that its big brother has abandoned.

Rich Brekus, the G.M. of product planning and strategy for BMW's N.A. operations, is quoted as saying that the 1-series, "is the purest BMW we have." He goes on to point out that BMW's driving dynamics are what won people over in the past, and it would be a shame to let the next generation down.

The 1-series will supposedly go on sale in the States next year, with both a two-door and a convertible being offered. We're getting anxious and it sounds like we have good reason.

[Source: Automotive News - Sub. We're not obsessive Bimmer-philes, but we know a good thing when we drive it and it's a rare occasion when we're let down by BMW's smallest sedan. This 22 minute PR-ified exploration of the 3-series, traces its origins, beginning with the beloved 2002, all the way through the current E90 series. Well worth the watch, but do take certain BMW talking head commentaries with a grain of salt.
Autoblog Night Watch: BMW 3-Series retrospective originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 07 Sep 2006 23:58:00 EST.
