Forgive us for having the distinct feeling of déjà vu, but it certainly feels like we've been here before. By that we are referring Car and Driver and the announcement of its annual 10Best vehicles for 2013. To be sure, it's an impressive selection of cars that combine heart-pounding performance and frugal sensibilities, but it also represents something of a broken record on the part of C/D. We're not so sure that's a flaw, though, as the resulting list is tough to argue with.

Vehicles like the Ford Mustang, Porsche Boxster, and BMW 3 Series have maintained their high-horsepower spots on this list for several years now. Even on the more practical and nimble end, the Honda Accord, Honda Fit and Mazda Miata have not budged. These continued spots are even in light of redesigns for some vehicles such as the Accord, Boxster and 3 Series.

In fact, the only newcomer to the 10Best list this year are the Scion FR-S/Subaru BRZ twins, which knocked out the Cadillac CTS-V. We think it would have been a huge misstep to have excluded the FR-S/BRZ, even in light of the supercharged Caddy's lamentable departure from 10Best.

Without further ado, here are 2012 Car and Driver 10Best winners:

Each year, the scribes at Car and Driver go through every new vehicle on sale and pick the ten best cars available here in the United States. And while some major automotive awards are only shelled out to vehicles that are all-new or significantly updated for a certain model year, C/D's approach is to look at the full scope of cars currently on sale. After all, there are some cars that are simply perennial favorites, even if they haven't changed year over year.

For 2012, the Chevrolet Volt and Hyundai Sonata have fallen off the list to make room for the Audi A6/A7 and Ford Focus. The other eight vehicles that round out the 10Best list have carried over from the 2011 winners, but we can't say we're surprised. These ten cars indeed represent some of the best vehicles on sale today.
Quite an undertaking. As they put it, "58 contenders. $2.5 million total. 12,000 test miles logged." For those keeping track, this is the 28th time C/D has published their 10Best. Surprises this year? No not really. The BMW 3 Series continues its unabated drive of dominance to 10Best history with an impressive, will-probably-never-be-duplicated 19th straight win. Not to be too outdone, the Honda Accord also makes the cut for a 24th time, though not consecutive.

Also note that while the Audi S4 makes the grade, the run-of-the-mill (so to speak) A4 does not. We're also pleased to see the Ford Fusion Hybrid getting its just dues (again, it's interesting that the gas-only version doesn't). And of course, you've got your yearly appearance by the Mazda Miata MX-5, Porsche Boxster / Cayman and Volkswagen GTI. Falling off the list this year? The Chevrolet Corvette, Infiniti G37, and the Jaguar XF.

Would we have done things much differently? Probably not much, though we must admit we were pulling for the highly impressive Suzuki Kizashi to make its debut and we're a bit surprised to not see one of the new crop of pony cars on the list. Maybe next year. Car of the Year, 10 Best, All-Stars - each publication has a different formula for picking the best of the best, and while we don't like every choice, most are spot-on. There are, however, times when we see a pick and wonder what the editors were drinking when they made their decision. Car and Driver, which has admittedly made its fair share of mistakes, has come up with a list of the 10 worst auto award winners of all time, and we thought it would be fun to share.

A quick look through C&D's bottom 10 shows some serious stinkers. The 1997 Chevy Malibu? The 1983 Renault Alliance? Ouch. How about the 1981 Chevy Citation? Hit the read link below to check out Car and Driver's bottom 10. While you're over there, check out the discrepancy between 10 Best winners and Motor Trend CotY winners. MT made the list six times, while C&D entered the hall of shame with three entries. Then again, C&D were the ones who made the list. Interestingly, they somehow also managed to ignore entries like the 1989 Dodge Colt, the 1994 Eagle Vision, and the 1987 Pontiac Bonneville, but they did ding the Merkur XR4Ti, a pretty entertaining (if odd and poor selling) driver's coupe. Hmmm...

[Source: Car and Driver]
Car and Driver tallies 10 most embarrassing auto award winners originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 26 Jan 2009 14:59:00 EST. We wanted to share it with you because, well, the list is too shocking not to share. Unfathomably, the Nissan GT-R didn't win a spot! It didn't even make it into the top ten. After taking the brass ring from Automobile and Motor Trend, how could CD not pick it? We were just as shocked as you are undoubtedly. This would be like only the second loss evah for Godzilla, and the first was in a brief skirmish with Mothra about 40 years ago.

Okay, we're kidding. We saw this one coming a mile away. C and D always has a price cap on their nominees and this year that meant the Nissan officially missed inclusion by about seven grand. Now that you've adjusted, we can tell you that the full list can be found by clicking the source link below, but know that there are 8 foreign cars on the list and 2 domestics. Three Germans made the list, along with four Japanese models and a lone Brit. The list is actually a solid one from top to bottom. You'll probably have a hard time disagreeing with the choices, but might think your favorite is missing. Let us know what replacements you'd make.

[Source: Car and Driver]
Car and Driver announces 10 Best: No GT-R to be found! originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 21 Nov 2008 10:58:00 EST.
In round number 25 of the toughest job in journalism, the editorial staff at Car and Driver has gathered at the secret camp located in the middle of some of the greatest roads in the Midwest. Struggling through the daunting task of evaluating the coolest cars available in these United States, they grind through an entire week behind the wheel. Fortunately, its only about 30 miles from the Car and Driver offices, so tents and campfires are not part of the event.

The criteria are very clear. Last year's winners are automatically invited back to defend their title. Eligible vehicles must be all-new or substantially upgraded for 2007. Each car gets only one shot at making the list, but once they win they could stay on the list for several years as long as they successfully defend the category win. This year, all vehicles had to be priced under $71,000, or 2.5 times the average transaction price of a new vehicle, and be on sale no later than January 2007. The manufacturer must also deliver a representative example to the camp for evaluation.

The Car and Driver 10 Best for 2007 are:

BMW 3-series

Chevrolet Corvette

Chrysler 300

Honda Accord

Honda Fit

Infiniti G35

Mazda MX-5

Mazda Mazdaspeed3

Porsche Boxster and Cayman

Volkswagen GTI
