EVO has come out with another gotta-watch-it video, throwing its 2012 Car of the Year contestants around the UK's 1.5-mile Blyton Park track. It's actually a 15-minute teaser for the full-length DVD detailing the magazine's Car of the Year selection, but the tease is worth every <strike>penny</strike> free second.

Tiff Needell and sports car racer Richard Meaden handle the wheel duties, the two driving five pairs of sports cars: Lotus Exige S vs. Porsche Boxster S, Morgan Three-Wheeler vs. Toyota GT86, BMW M135i vs. Porsche 911, Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Black Series vs. Alpina B3 GT3, the marquee event pits the McLaren MP4-12C vs. the Pagani Huayra. After a head-to-head lap with commentary during drifts, Meaden takes each car out to set a representative lap time.

You'll find the verdicts, lots of tire smoke, and lines like "Anything you can do sideways I can do sideways" in the video below.
Continue reading EVO "2012 Car of the Year: The Track Battles" is a sports car salmagundi

EVO "2012 Car of the Year: The Track Battles" is a sports car salmagundi originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 25 Nov 2012 17:30:00 EST.
Let's get one thing straight: We'll never complain about a new BMW 1 Series performance model, and on paper, this new-for-2013 135is sure seems like a total hoot. But you have to understand, we're still mourning the loss of the 1 Series M Coupe, a one-year model that we absolutely fell in love with when it debuted last year. To quote BMW, the 135is is the "top performance model 1 Series for 2013," and awesome as it may be, it just makes the 1M's death seem all the more permanent. Le sigh.

Still, there's plenty to be excited about with this new 135is. Available in both coupe and convertible body styles, the hotter 1 Series uses a more powerful version of the 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six from the 135i, boosted to 320 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque here - upgrades of 20 and 17, respectively, over the standard car. Both a six-speed manual and seven-speed dual-clutch transmission are available.

A revised sport suspension comes standard, as do visual upgrades like new 18-inch alloy wheels, a blacked-out grille and black mirror caps, in addition to all of the usual M Sport cosmetic changes.

The 135is is available to order as you read this, with the first deliveries taking place in the fall. Pricing starts at $44,195 for the coupe and $44,895 for the convertible, including the $895 destination charge. Give the 1 Series M a final wave goodbye and scroll down to take in all of the details about the 135is in BMW's press blast.
Continue reading BMW launches 2013 135is coupe and convertible

BMW launches 2013 135is coupe and convertible originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 15 May 2012 12:58:00 EST.
We can now take an official, in-depth look at the new BMW M135i and the accompanying three-door 1 Series range - and there's much to see. Starting from the beginning, the Bimmer's styling has inclined some people to grab their hatchets. Yes, there's a whole lot of intensity and a slumgullion of deeply incised polygons mixed together in that little upright face, but we have no doubt there'll be a whole lot more people grabbing their wallets when they see it.

Along with the 320-horsepower M135i, fresh engines and features are among the new treats, as well as Sport Line, Urban Line and M Sport Package trims. The new 102-hp 114i model establishes the base, followed by the 136-hp 116i, 170-hp 118i and 218-hp 125i on the gasoline side, the 116-hp 116d, 143-hp 118d, 184-hp 120d and 218-hp 125d on the diesel side. Six-speed manuals are the go-to, with two eight-speed automatic transmissions in the options column. The M135i and 120d can be had with xDrive all-wheel drive, a first-time application on the 1 Series.

The new body is 85 mm longer, 17 mm wider, with a 30-mm longer wheelbase and wider track front and rear. The enlarged dimensions mean more cargo and legroom in the back, and buyers will get the option of having either two or three rear seats. And the comfort and safety systems lists read like someting out of the Papa Bear 7 Series, from Internet access to Lane Departure Warning and auto-braking cruise control.

Hop into the high-res gallery or head for the press releases below that details everything you could want to know about the new three-door 1 Series.
Continue reading 320-horsepower BMW M135i headlines new three-door 1 Series range

320-horsepower BMW M135i headlines new three-door 1 Series range originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 14 May 2012 09:57:00 EST.
We knew this was coming, but the BMW 1 Series M Coupe is now history. While BMW is still building out the model run, it has closed ordering and "all cars are spoken for," according to Car and Driver.

The report comes from the magazine's European correspondent, so we assume any remaining cars are destined to remain in Europe, meaning that our friends across the Atlantic are just now catching up to our situation here. Perhaps this news should come as no surprise, as the 1 Series M Coupe was sold in the U.S. for just a single model year, 2011.

Of course, if your heart is set on owning one of fewer than 1,000 1 Series M Coupes that were offered in the States, the only thing standing between you and your dream is money. We imagine values of these cars will not depreciate much (the only used example on eBay Motors at the moment has been essentially bid up to MSRP), though whether the 1 Series M Coupe will achieve the cult status of the 2001-2002 BMW M Coupe remains to be seen.
BMW 1 Series M Coupe is sold out originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 03 Apr 2012 15:15:00 EST.
It isn't every day that BMW offers an electric vehicle, but the ActiveE is just that. The German luxury car maker is now accepting applications for 700 ActiveE "Electronauts" in the test markets of Boston, Hartford, New York, Los Angeles, Sacramento, San Diego and San Francisco.

The hand-raisers will need to complete a charging station consultation with BMW Partner AeroVironment to make sure the house of the perspective lessee can handle a charger. The meeting will also serve as a teaching session to make sure the user understands the charging and maintenance of an electric vehicle.

Once the perspective lessee meets those criteria, they will be given the opportunity to lease the
4,000-pound, electrified 1 Series Coupe for 24 months at $499 per month, plus $2,250 down. Hit the jump to look over the BMW press release, and head over to BMWActivateTheFuture.com if you're interested in learning more about the ActiveE.
Continue reading BMW ActiveE enrollment process now open in test markets

BMW ActiveE enrollment process now open in test markets originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 23 Jan 2012 18:15:00 EST.
The new 2012 BMW 1 Series is making friends hither and yon, but an unsourced report from the Netherlands suggests it might soon be taking no prisoners with the rumored arrival next summer of a 320-horsepower, 135i hatch. Yes, grab your salt and put on your tinfoil hat, because this appears to be the most speculative sort of speculation.

The redesigned 2012 1 Series is being launched overseas with seven choices of four-cylinder engine, the top-of-the-line being the 2.0-liter, 245-hp 128is which replaces the six-cylinder in the formerly range-topping 130i. The claim in Dutch automotive blog Driving Fun asserts that the hot hatch will get the 3.0-liter turbocharged six and enough horses to put it just shy of the 335-hp 1 Series M. What's more, it goes on further to claim a "four-wheel drive" (read: "all-wheel drive") version will arrive in December 2012.

Even if we liked such an answer, there are probably too many open questions to bother enjoying it at this point. Not that it would matter to us, anyway: were BMW ever to make such a vehicle, it probably would be too expensive to bring to America.
BMW planning 135i hatch? originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 23 Nov 2011 15:06:00 EST.
BMW loves long strings of characters that somehow swirl together to create the name of a specific vehicle in its lineup. We don't, however, and would love to see names like the Z4 sDrive35is give way to easier-to-understand nomenclature, alphanumeric or no. To that end, our spy photographers have managed to snap some shots of a new hatchback/wagon that could help restore a bit of naming sanity, and it goes by the nickname FAST.

Those four letters are the shortened version of Family Active Sports Tourer. We'd prefer to call it a wagon, but FAST (the model's internal designation according to AutoExpress), is far better than BMW 1 Series Family Active Sports Tourer Fdrive30iT... or whatever the company's marketers would prefer to call it.

Speculation is that the BMW FAST will take over for the 1 Series, which itself will soon graduate to become 2 Series. This new wagon will utilize a front-wheel-drive platform that's shared with the next crop of Mini vehicles. Rumor has it that an all-wheel-drive version will also be made available. We're not counting on it keeping the FAST designation when it reaches showrooms, but either way, look for this creature to arrive by 2013.
Spy Shots: BMW thinks FAST originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 01 Aug 2011 11:01:00 EST.
It has been brought to our attention that there are many Americans besides just us who wish they could more easily get their hands on the sort of two- and four-door hatchbacks that Europeans buy by the truckload. Not only that, but we also dream of having access to the full range of clever four-cylinder gas and diesel engines our Old Country brethren take for granted.

In yet another example of such forbidden fruit, we traveled to Berlin, Germany this month to drive the latest "F20" four-door version of the car considered by many to be the first hatchback to take the premium European compact genre big-time. Admittedly, that judgment call is a bit of a toss-up between the 1 Series and the Mini Cooper and Audi A3, but the 1 Series has done BMW proud selling nearly 1.3 million units worldwide in a single generation since late 2004. This success story is not unlike that of the X3 compact crossover that is just now entering its more sophisticated second generation.

For this drive, we had a matte corral red 118i with 1.6-liter TwinPower Turbo inline four-cylinder at our disposal. The N13 engine's 168 horsepower were ably complemented by 184 pound-feet of torque available between 1,500 and 4,500 rpm. This powerplant is actually a heavily adapted and retuned longitudinal version of the transverse N18 1.6-liter found in the Mini Cooper S. To go with this single twin-scroll turbocharged unit, buyers will need to choose between an optional eight-speed Steptronic automatic or the happy little car seen here with the same six-speed ZF manual found in the fantabulous 1 M Coupe.

2012 BMW 1 Series Five-Door originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 15 Jul 2011 11:54:00 EST. 2012 BMW 1 Series - Click above for high-res image mega gallery

There's no point, or so the saying goes, of closing the door once the horses have bolted. So shortly after the first handful of images leaked their way onto the Internet, BMW has released the full kit n' kaboodle on its new entry-level model.

The all-new 2012 1 Series is expected to make its world debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show this fall. And when it does, it will be a substantially different car than the model it replaces. The new model - code-named F20 and based on the same platform that underpins the (now only slightly larger) 3 Series - has grown considerably over the E81 it succeeds, with every dimension but height increasing. The changes benefit both interior and cargo space, two aspects where the outgoing model fell short.

The new sheetmetal has also bears revised styling, with a bigger face incorporating the giant eyes featured on BMW's latest concept cars, a more pronounced swage line and taillights moved outboard across the wider track to offer a larger liftgate aperture for increased ease-of-use. The Bavarians also appear to have paid close attention to the interior fit and finish to improve on the previous model's rather spartan cabin.

Under that long nose, the new baby Bimmer is being launched exclusively with four-cylinder engines, and while more variants are expected to follow, for now it's just the five-door hatch. A pair of 1.6-liter gasoline engines pack direct injection and offer 136 horsepower in 116i trim and 170 in the 118i. Three 2.0-liter turbo-diesels are also being offered overseas, ranging from 116 horsepower up to 184 in the flagship 120d. A 1.5-liter three-pot is expected to come in gasoline and diesel variants, while the top 128iS is slated to get a 245hp turbo 2.0-liter gasoline four to take the place of the current six-cylinder 130i.

All engines come mated to either a six-speed manual or an optional eight-speed auto from ZF, with an array of earth-friendly technologies including stop-start ignition and regenerative braking. Of course, this being the latest offering from a leading German automaker, all manner of electronic assists are on offer, from self-adjusting high-beams and lane departure warning to automatic traffic sign recognition and a back-up camera.

Overseas buyers will also be able to choose between Urban and Sport trim levels offering different aesthetics, but we'll have to sit tight to see which models will make their voyage to this side of the Atlantic. In the meantime, you're invited to peruse the massive 127-image high-resolution gallery for all the angles and the extensive 21-page press release - complete with spec sheets - after the jump.
Continue reading BMW spills all the beans on new 1 Series

BMW spills all the beans on new 1 Series originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 05 Jun 2011 13:48:00 EST.
Oh dear. It appears that the overhauled 2012 BMW 1 Series has leaked onto the Internet ahead of its Frankfurt Motor Show debut, and while we only have images of it from a few angles, the new car's design has us scratching our heads. It's true that the 1 Series has never been a particularly gorgeous thing, but we're going to have to see this one in person to wrap our head around its upsized visage.

As is the way with such things, the 1 Series will grow in size compared to the car we currently enjoy, and a range of new four- and six-cylinder turbocharged engines should be seen underhood. BMW is expected to further its Efficient Dynamics program by fitting the new 1 with start/stop technology, as well as regenerative braking, though it isn't immediately clear what technologies will come on the 1 Series when it reaches the States.
2012 BMW 1 Series leaks onto Internet ahead of Frankfurt reveal originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 03 Jun 2011 17:13:00 EST.
Enthusiasts, BMW has your car.

After painfully watching for years as the automaker's beloved M lineup ballooned in both size and weight - even adding sport utility vehicles - the German's have delivered us a new little jewel. It's not another derivative of the race-bred M3, the highly anticipated next-generation M5 or a sneak preview of the future M6. Instead, this little shot of driving ecstasy comes in the guise of the lowly 1 Series - the entry-level BMW.

BMW invited us to its headquarters in New Jersey for our first driving impressions. Instead of death-by-PowerPoint, the traditional manner of new vehicle introduction, they immediately handed us the key fob to a brand-new 1 Series M Coupe along with a paper map. Our assignment was to drive the back roads for the next two hours to Monticello Motorsports Park, the private racing circuit outside New York City. After extended hot laps followed by lunch, we'd polish the marbles off the tire treads with a drive back to Montvale before a six-hour flight back home. Continue reading...
Continue reading 2011 BMW 1 Series M Coupe

2011 BMW 1 Series M Coupe originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 13 May 2011 11:57:00 EST.
With the 2012 BMW 1 Series nearing its debut, BMW has released a painfully vague teaser image of its next small car. We already have a good indication of the car's five-door shape, thanks to a crack team of spy photographers, but a second version is in the works, and judging by the profile, it's likely a three-door hatch.

However the model lineup shakes out for the next 1 Series, we can expect the five-door to hit production first, followed shortly thereafter by the second variant. To get ready for the cars' debut, BMW is readying a new ad blitz featuring two siblings under the slogan "one origin, two originals."

For now, we're left with pure speculation about what shape the next 1 Series will take. Before the car is revealed fully, we wouldn't be surprised if BMW cranks out another teaser or two to keep the guessing game in full swing. Head past the jump to check out the ads for the car.
Continue reading BMW teases 2012 1 Series [w/video]

BMW teases 2012 1 Series [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 09 May 2011 09:57:00 EST.
There are few things more satisfying for a younger sibling than besting their older kin. Be it a hard-fought round of Stratego or a bare-knuckle brawl, putting an elder brother or sister in their place can be more satisfying than winning the lottery. In this spirit, German magazine Sport Auto just finished pitting the new 2012 1 Series M Coupe up against BMW's venerable M3. The pair locked horns around Hockenheim in a battle for ultimate supremacy that saw the M3 do the deed in 1:14.2. The M Coupe, meanwhile, managed to lap the track a hair quicker at 1:14.1.

That gave the newcomer to the game the overall win and put it just one tenth of a second behind metal like the Porsche Cayman S on the famous track. Is this conclusive evidence that the 1 Series M Coupe is the better performance buy than the legendary M3? Not necessarily. After all, this is just one comparison with one magazine. Still, the fact that the baby BMW can get within striking distance of its predecessor with two fewer cylinders is a testament to the vehicle's prowess.

The 2011 BMW 1 Series M Coupe is serving duty as one of the safety cars for the 2011 MotoGP Championship, which kicks off this weekend at the Grand Prix of Qatar. The 1M Coupe that will be handling safety car duties has been smartened up a little from stock, starting with an Akrapovic sport exhaust.

BMW also added a big rear wing, a chin spoiler and BMW Motorsport's fabled tri-color paint scheme. To cap the look off, BMW has finished the wheels and exhaust tips in black. No word yet on whether the accessories on the MotoGP pace car will be made available to the public, or if this car is a one-shot deal.
BMW showed us the ActiveE Concept back at the 2010 Detroit Auto Show. Now the automaker is using the Geneva Motor Show floor to roll out the latest version of its electrified 1-Series. The BMW ActiveE, following in the footsteps of the Mini E before it, will begin rolling out to select markets in the Fall of 2011.

Mini utilized a fleet of 600 electric Coopers for field tests, but BMW is upping the ante by producing 1,000 vehicles. The ActiveE will make its North American debut at the New York Auto Show in April. After that, it will roll its way into the driveways and garages of residents in Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco, Sacramento, New York, Boston and parts of Connecticut.

Powering the BMW ActiveE are a plethora of liquid-cooled SB LiMotive batteries. They provide enough juice to generate 170 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. The ActiveE uses that energy to run from 0-60 miles per hour in about nine seconds and the juiced-up 1-Series has a range of 100 miles. Check it out in the galleries below and read more about the car in BMW's official release after the jump.
BMW 1 Series Spy Shots - Click above for high-res image gallery

Our elite squad of spy photographers has managed to nab a handful of photos of the upcoming BMW 1 Series. Given that a refreshed model has just debuted for 2012, it's understandable that details on the next-gen model are still squirmy at the moment. In any case, this new batch of shots show off a bit more of what we can expect to see on the production version when it lands in showrooms. If this mule is any indication we can expect the 1 to come bearing the company's first turn signals integrated into the sideview mirrors, and it appears that the squared angel-eye headlights of manufacturer's recent concept cars have finally made their way off of the show circuit and onto the street.

Inside, BMW has finally seen fit to add a little color to the cabin with a few splashes of red stitching as well as a dash accent. It looks like the 1 will also come bearing a pop-up navigation screen when it arrives in dealerships.

As of right now, there's little word as to what will show up under the hood of this wee beastie when it comes Stateside, but we hear that this particular machine was powered by a 2.0-liter diesel engine and an eight-speed automatic. The car was also spotted testing alongside two xDrive products vehicles and an Audi A4, so there's a good chance that we'll see all-wheel drive crop up on the next 1, too.

The rumor furnaces are cooking at full tilt when it comes to what will be lurking under the hood of the upcoming BMW 1 Series M Coupe. The sleuths at 1addicts.com have managed to lay their hands on a clandestine manifest that supposedly outlines all of the new models set to flow forth the Bavarian automaker. Nestled among the more common 1 Series metal is a vehicle that appears to be code named "1 M Pyrat" that will supposedly pack a 340 horsepower N54 engine in European trim. That'll send your eyebrows to your hairline, sure, but it's not nearly as shocking as the U.S.-spec model just a bit further down the list.

According to the enthusiast site, BMW is planning a 451 horsepower version of the 1 Series M Coupe just for American consumption. Now, we hate to the little black rain cloud that rains on everyone's parade, but this seems more than a little unlikely. After all, the big daddy M3 rolls with 414 horsepower right now, and even if BMW is planning a substantial bump in power in the near future, it seems unlikely that the baby 1 would be given the chops to pass its bigger brother.

Still, it doesn't hurt us one bit to dream this little dream until BMW says otherwise. Head over to 1addicts to have a closer look at the manifest.

Typically, JDM-only models are made by Japanese automakers. Someone apparently forgot to tell BMW, however, as the German automaker has just launched the third in a recent line of Nippon-specific special editions.

Following in the footsteps of the X6 Performance Unlimited and the Mini Savile Row comes the new 120i Performance Unlimited. The special 1-Series comes equipped with the 170-horsepower 2.0-liter four with a six-speed automatic and a variety of M-Sport components, from bumper caps and and a blacked-out grille to a set of 18-inch split-five-spoke alloys and carbon fiber spoiler and mirror housings.

The cabin is similarly decked out in M-Sport extras, like sport seats, leather-covered steering wheel and shift lever and aluminum pedals. Exterior colors are limited to blue or white, and only 30 examples will be built. If you want to get your hands on one, first of all, you'll have to relocate to Japan and then stand in line with ¥4,350,000 (about $50,300).

According to BMW, the 1-Series is selling like tequila at spring break. The small-scale Bimmer may not have exactly received a warm embrace from big-boned Americans, but sales of the 1 have been good enough around the globe for the company to build over a million examples. The 1-Series has only been on the market since 2004, and is still in its first generation.

Part of the car's success is likely due to the wide variety of body styles and engine choices available outside of the States. European buyers can snap up efficient four-cylinder engines, both in gasoline and turbo-diesel guise, as well as functional hatchback versions of the 1. Meanwhile, we get our baby BMW in just two flavors - coupe and convertible - with only two engine options.

Odds are that the car will only get more popular as time goes on. BMW has made it clear that the all-electric ActiveE is headed to lease fleets sometime soon, and that car's 170 horsepower electric motor is bound to be a welcome addition to the lineup.

The oft-speculated M version of the BMW 1 Series appears to be getting closer to production reality if our latest batch of spy pics is anything to go on. Exactly what badge it will were remains unknown at this point. It seems improbable that it will actually be called M1 since BMW likely wants to preserve the badge for its original M supercar. However, it is possible that the hotted up 1 could follow the pattern of the X5/X6 and be called the 1 M - and it might not even get an M badge altogether. Perhaps it will just be dubbed 135is like the new-for-2011 335is that we recently reviewed - or even a 135 tii like a previous concept shown by BMW.

1 Series enthusiasts' forum 1Addicts.com has an FAQ of unknown provenance that indicates the car will be launched late this year and on sale in the first half of 2011. Power is expected to come from a twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline six which perhaps indicates that the 135is branding is the most likely scenario. A convertible may also be part of the plan.

Our spy shooter notes that this car is clearly further developed from the previous prototypes with tacked-on black fenders. The front spoiler, widened fenders, and big alloys shrouding oversized drilled discs appear to be near-production items too. Given that the current 135i puts offers 300 horsepower, and going speculation has the hotter model delivering 350-370 horsepower.

All of which begs the question: What do you want the new top-rung 1 Series to be called? Take our survey below and let us know what you think.
