First Drive: 2010 Saab 9-5 proves being born from chaos builds character

A funny thing happened on the way to bankruptcy court for General Motors. As part of a bid to have its red-stained slate wiped clean, it moved to divest itself of a number of brands in its bloated portfolio, with Pontiac, Saturn, Hummer and Saab all earmarked for sale or closure. However, only one brand inspired sufficient passion among both owners and those with the financial wherewithal to rescue it from GM's 'wind-down' apple polishers. Oddly enough, it was the tiny Swede that successfully swam out to the life raft. Saab, the marque with the smallest and oldest product lineup, lowest... Read More

Is Saab considering a Russian plant?
    1269952020

Spyker's association with ex-company chairman Vladimir Antonov is what almost kept the Saab deal from happening. But after a high-profile bid to clear his name (still waiting on the report, Mr. A) and the scent of euros on the table, you didn't really think Antonov was just going to walk away, did you? The Russian said in an interview last week that Saab ...

    1264628460

We had an interesting chat with a Saab mechanic in Hollywood yesterday. Naturally, he was overcome with great joy over the fact that Spyker saved Saab. What made the conversation interesting was his asking us if there will be a 2010 Saab 9-5? Dunno. Er, didn't know. But that was then. Today we feel pretty confident that there will not be a 2010 Saab 9-5. ...

    1264445940

The question of whether General Motors will go ahead and sell Saab to Spyker seems no closer to getting a real-life answer today after newly self-appointed GM CEO Ed Whitacre held a press conference without naming a new owner for the troubled Swedish automaker. Perhaps then, reports of Saab's production numbers offer a renewed glimmer of hope for ...

Spy Shots: Engineers still testing Saab 9-5 SportCombi, should somebody tell them?
    1263947040

We know automakers like to test prototypes in remote, freezing locations to ensure that they'll start and run properly when sold to a family of five in Buffalo, New York. Perhaps these Saab engineers are in such a remote corner of Sweden that they haven't heard the mothership has crashed. While Saab's future is still undecided, hope seems to dwindle by ...

Saab floats along in limbo as General Motors figures out what to do with its Swedish plum, meaning that dealers are stuck with moribund product to try and unload. If BAIC wanted to be in the Saab business, clearly, it would have made overtures for more than just the retired tooling from the older versions of the 9-5 and 9-3. BAIC wants the cars ...
