POLL: Over 70% of Americans want 40 MPG to be the law {Autoblog}
Nov 24th 2006 1:51PM Our dependence on foreign oil is most of the problem. Ethanol (from corn) is uneconomical in terms of energy put in verses energy received. Perhaps ethanol from sugar beets or saw grass would be cheaper, but the land mass required to grow the energy we need to fill our tanks would require another planet. The US has the largest reserve of coal in the world. Now this is definitely a dirty fuel, and the strip mining producing it is destroying the natural resources around the mines.
The world war II mentality and effort that went into the Manhattan project needs to be applied by minds greater than mine and most of us who read this blog. I do see a possible solution that could be adapted with time. An infrastructure of wind generators combined with a new generation of solar panels and light powerful batteries could be the answer.
The new Tesla car shows that electrics can be made for speed and provide for decent range now, and as suggested, once the best minds are put to it, batteries can be improved even more.
40 mpg? It would be an improvement. But as supplies of oil dwindle the cost per gallon, be it diesel or gasoline will only go higher and higher.
POLL: Big Apple's Best of Show {Autoblog}
Apr 21st 2006 4:14PM You missed the obvious to today's needs - - the OBVIO! This little car from Brazil will mean more and more as gas goes to $5/gallon. It was on the top floor where they sold all sorts of toys and gadgets, so many show goers may not have seen it.
Oregon testing new GPS-based road tax system {Autoblog}
Mar 27th 2006 11:32PM Bad idea from any perspective. As mentioned before why not just raise the fuel tax? We're already programmed to pay it, and it's almost invisible. Another suggestion might be to tax a vehicle yearly on engine displacement. This is a common European tax, and is one of the reasons why so many small displacement engines are popular.
