Ferrari auction nets record €6,875,000 bid {Autoblog}

May 21st 2007 8:24PM "an historic"? Ugh, that needed an editor.

On a positive note, this was the car driven by American Phil Hill, who went on to win the F1 driver's championship for Ferrari.

NIght Watch: The sights and sounds of the Mazda 787B {Autoblog}

May 20th 2007 1:05PM Great sound, even if the video quality sucked.

You can get Victory by Design on DVD. Great series, although the last 2 on Vette and Lotus were cut poorly for Speed's broadcast.

F1 could switch to turbo V6 engines running on biofuel {Autoblog}

May 19th 2007 5:30PM We could all hope that the closest F1 gets to running diesel engines is Max being run down by a London bus.

Customer cars, no engine development. If I wanted to watch a spec series, we have several here in the States to choose from.

Here's 240 mph, and you'll see he's going about half that speed at best.

And that's just the 936; in the 1980s, the Porsche prototype coupes were about 15 mph faster down the Mulsanne.

I've done 125mph in a 911 turbo and the lane dashes go by about as fast as they do in the 'busa video, but nowhere near as fast in the 936 video.

Are electronics making cars obsolete faster? {Autoblog}

May 17th 2007 11:04AM "16. " So in order to avoid that scenario, once the warranty runs out, they simply stop making the parts."

I don't think this is a true statement. Federal law requires companies to build a certain number of aftermarket parts. While they don't have to do it forever, I do believe car makers are required to do it longer than the warranty.

Gotta read the whole article.

From the story:
In some cases, Ford supplies parts for many years or even decades. But in other cases, the company reserves the right to stop supplying parts as soon as the warranty expires.

"There is no specific law that says how long manufacturers have to stock any part, let alone a key part like a control module or a safety part like a seat belt," said Clarence Ditlow, executive director of the Center for Auto Safety in Washington, D.C. "It is a real consumer abuse."

Are electronics making cars obsolete faster? {Autoblog}

May 17th 2007 10:59AM "5. LA Times is way way off. The Internet makes it almost impossible not to find parts for almost any American car produced in the past 20 years. You might not get a brand new "black box" but to say that cars are obsolete faster than ever is a stretch."

How is it a stretch? Ford is the one who deemed the parts obsolete, not the writer.

And there's a huge difference between getting a new, warrantied part from the dealer and buying of eBay, especially for electronics. And the link you posted is to the wrong part.

California AG says feds may have to bail out US automakers {Autoblog}

May 16th 2007 12:41PM "AMERICA FIRST!
That should be our credo.
How do you achieve that?
Quite simply, my dear Watson.
Pass a law that states only products manufactured in the U.S.A. can be sold in the U.S.A.
Of course there will be exceptions to the rule, eg. coffee, bananas, etc. And you could even allow the importation of French wine or the odd Bentley as long as a 100% duty were slapped on the tag.

Get with the program and let's revive the America again!"

That's moronic and unrealistic. It's too late for that. The free-trade crowd got their way in the '80s and the genie ain't going back in the bottle.
