Eco-thugs trash D.C. resident's HUMMER {Autoblog}
Jul 23rd 2007 1:53PM Oh my god...I feel SOOOO sorry for that poor HUMMER owner...this tragedy brings tears to my eyes!
Destruction of private property - regardless of how obnoxious that property is - cannot be tolerated. But to call it a "hate crime" devalues the a term that should be reserved for crimes specifically targeting race, creed, orientation, etc.
HUMMERs are bought by two types of people and two types of people ALONE:
1): GIs and the like who have served their country abroad and who just can't go back to driving ordinary-sized cars. Since they helped fight for the oil, they deserve to guzzle as much as they like, as far as I'm concerned.
and 2): Jerks.
Jerk-ness spreads across all races, creeds, and orientations. This wasn't a hate crime, just a crime.
That doesn't mean it shouldn't be a misdemeanor to buy a vehicle so impractical that can't even fit in your garage and affects local tides.
On another note, for someone so apparently tone-deaf on the increasing animosity towards big SUVs, I find it interesting that the victim can read faces so well - and detect "snarky", "smug", and "self-satisfied". Perhaps the ordeal has made him a bit hypersensitive to the expressions of passersby.
Spy Shots: AM General Humvee prototype caught! {Autoblog}
Jul 23rd 2007 12:59PM Considering the high percentage of American soliders maimed while travelling in AM General's previous HMMWV, I find it perplexing and a little insulting that AM wants to provide the military with a new deathtrap.
From the photos of this car, I still see LOTs of 90-degree angles and slab sides, which means this vehicle has little or no more blast protection than the old hulk. I think the military should go with a company that's a bit less set in its ways and more innovative like the ULTRA AP.
The simple fact that so many thousands have been killed or horribly injured in vehicles that were from the start ill-equipped and ill-designed for use in the middle of an insurgency should be reason enough for the DoD to pass on the General this time.
The Humvee is hopelessly obsolete, and the truck pictured looks like a glorified facelift. No expense should be spared to build a vehicle that protects our troops abd limits rather than exacerbates the severity of casualties.

Jul 18th 2007 7:19PM Well, I hear they eat dogs in Europa, so this comes as no surprise. Here in the Republic, we won't have this commercial.
Spring 2008: Arrival date for BMW 1-Series {Autoblog}
Jul 18th 2007 3:59PM I don't think it's a bad-looking car but I'll have to reserve judgment until I drive it. That said, the only thing this has in common with the 2002 is the number of doors.

Jul 18th 2007 3:06PM Very nice looking. I agree that the proportions are spot on from every angle; even the rear, which is NOT a bangle-butt.
Spy Shots: Return of the Chevy Aveo5? {Autoblog}
Jul 18th 2007 9:28AM I think it's commendable that a car whose sole purpose is to be a new car for those who can barely afford one also manages to be an "okay" car. That wasn't always the case with Chevy's captive imports. More often then not, you could file them under "awful."
But I've always liked the Aveo (nee Metro), and I'm glad the 5-door is getting revamped along with the sedan. (Although frankly, I don't see what's taking them so long.) The Aveo5 sure is no Fit, but it does undercut it in price, and that may help it steal sales from the subcompact benchmark, as well as the Versa, Yaris, and its closest competitors, the Accent and Rio.
Vehicles keep piling on the pounds {Autoblog}
Jul 18th 2007 9:23AM I personally don't buy any of the crap about cars HAVING to get bigger in order to be safer, and therefore needing bigger engines too.
More accidents are caused by the size of the driver's ego than the size of the car. And real accidents will happen no matter how large a car is - accidents just happen. Even if everyone drove a F-450 King Ranch, there'd still be fatal accidents.
Commute times are getting longer, raising stress levels, and when traffic does let up, drivers who feel more safe and powerful take more risks and drive more aggressively. I think the rampant road rage in America is canceling out any possible benefits growing cars offer.
Honda really did a disservice by sizing the Civic up to midsize. The whole idea of a "Civic" is that it was once the perfect "city car"; but that title now belongs to the Fit.
Does that matter? Does selling a compact city car under the same name for 35 years then growing it right out of its segment matter? I think so. They should rename the FIT the Civic and the Civic...something else.
