New fuel economy standards set 35 mpg limit by 2020 {Autoblog}

Dec 1st 2007 1:52PM Is this 35 mpg highway, or 35 mpg combined? Highway would be a stretch for a non-hybrid (even the Honda Fit doesn't make it), while combined would be impossible without a hybrid (or diesel).

I wonder if most Americans realize that this means that they'll be driving smaller cars? A lot of people (people who don't understand basic physics) still cling to the false hope that engineers are going to find some silver bullet that allows them to propel a 5500 lb. vehicle with nearly 40 sq. ft. of frontal area down the road at 65 mpg and still get 35 mpg.

LA 2007: Chevrolet Aveo 5, questionable aesthetics come to US {Autoblog Green}

Nov 15th 2007 10:46AM I like it a lot. It's unusual, but all the details are right. Even the side vents are visually integrated, even if they are superfluous.

Compare this to the Camry, or the new Accord, which have more or less conventional proportions, but a lot of incongruous details that ruin the overall effect.

Spy Shots: Hyundai RWD Coupe caught on floor of LA Auto Show {Autoblog}

Nov 14th 2007 3:35PM My guess is that this orange car is a concept, while the spy pics from last week's marketing event were of an actual production car.

Who needs a Lexus LS? I want a Malibu! {Autoblog}

Nov 14th 2007 12:05PM I saw an LTZ at a local dealership this past weekend, and my conclusion is this: If you like the Saturn Aura, you will like this car.

The interior is substantially the same as the Aura's. It has a nice two-tone look, but other than that, it shares most of the Aura's shortcomings: molded plastic door panels and front seat backs, no overhead assist handles, no sunglass holder, and no rear seat center armrest. It does have bottle holders in the front doors, which the Aura lacks. Rear seat headroom is tight, and while the trunk is large in volume, it is very shallow, which limits it's usefulness.

There is a storage bin on the top of the dash, and a two-tier center console storage box. I'm not sure if the Aura has these features or not.

The panel fit on the car I saw was OK, but not great. That's to be expected in an early production car.

The interior looks great in pictures, but it's a bit deflating in real life. If you take a lot of pictures of your car, you might like it. :-)

Nothing about this car reminds me of a Lexus; the veneer is a bit too thin to fool most people. GM is getting closer, but they just can't seem to hit the target.

Hyundai Coupe fully undisguised! {Autoblog}

Nov 8th 2007 4:33PM > RWD turbo I4 with a manual and a great warranty.

Not to mention that it will probably be priced lower than a Mustang, and have better fuel economy.

> 215 hp from a turbo 2.0 L seems a bit low though.

Volkswagen's 2.0 turbo does 200, and that's with direct injection. 215 seems really good. I won't be disappointed if it comes in at 200.

Volkswagen to drop prices, aims to compete with Toyota {Autoblog}

Oct 19th 2007 10:55AM VW is going to have to severely decontent the base model Jetta to match the equipment level of the base model Corolla. No more power windows, power door locks, keyless entry, cruise control, or MP3 playback, not to mention auto up/down windows, height adjustable seats (driver and front pass.), adjustable lumbar support (driver and front pass), power recliner (driver), illuminated visor mirrors, sliding center armrest, rear seat AC vents, or 8-speakers. There's probably a bunch more that I missed.
