Same old shtick: IIHS wants to delay licenses for teens {Autoblog}

Sep 9th 2008 2:47PM I'm in favor of graduated licenses (being 35 and not affected of course). Teenagers need the experience, otherwise you're just dropping 17 year olds with no experience into traffic instead of better trained new drivers.

Driving has become very hectic in the DC metro area. When I was growing up, going over 60 was uncommon, now you don't go UNDER 60 in most places, and 70+ is required on the major interstates (I95, 495).

The volume of traffic, and the complexity of the roads west of DC has increased dramatically, however the level of required training seems to have gone down.

We don't really explain to teens (or any other @ssh0le on the road) that you're driving a 3000lb machine and YOU are responsible for it. VA finally passed some cell phone laws, but it doesn't affect adults, just teens.

More training and experience is the only answer. Maybe everyone should have to take a follow up drivers test to move on to a non-restricted license? (Maybe this is already the case).

Garmin's free lifetime traffic service comes with a catch: ads {Engadget}

Sep 5th 2008 1:25PM Based on the number of ads on PC Mag's web site I'm not sure they have the right to complain about it.

As long as the ads aren't in the way I'd probably be willing to trade free traffic for a few ads. As long as they don't make them more invasive with firmware updates or map updates.

It is a nice review (although short) comparing side by side to show how their software has evolved is helpful.

Immersion to pay Microsoft $21 million, Sony groans {Engadget}

Aug 27th 2008 10:57AM @1stJunglist:

Perhaps MS said something along the lines of

"Well you know that if we pay you for this, it sort of validates your lawsuit for everyone else, and that should be worth something to you..."

Or perhaps I'm to negative.

Monterey 2008: All aboard the red Enzo/F1/Lambo-like failboat {Autoblog}

Aug 18th 2008 1:34PM "And, to be honest, as long as the owner does like this, it's not really a fail. I don't see autoblog (or most of the commenters) designing, building, and showing off their own custom designs, so if this guy/gal is happy I say let them be happy."

AVMap intros breathalyzer-equipped Geosat 6 Drive Safe navigator {Engadget}

Aug 15th 2008 1:55PM I agree with you in theory, but in a lot of places DUI is set pretty low. In fact for some people one drink might set them over the limit depending on weight, how much they ate etc. The only way to KNOW you're legal is to not drink AT ALL.

There aren't many reliable ways for the average person to test themselves. I'm guessing that in the US, bars don't want to have a machine because then they might be responsible if their machine says you're ok (below .08 in most places) but you crash on the way home "the bar said I wasn't drunk".

The technology to do a simple check for "I FEEL ok, but am I LEGALLY ok to drive" has been around but not implemented. You can't just walk up to a cop and ask for a field sobriety test (well you can), if you fail the test he'll cite you for drunk in public.

Rendered Speculation: Nissan making Murano convertible for 2010 {Autoblog}

Aug 13th 2008 10:33AM You know as odd as it looks I have to welcome something different.

Sure those pictures sort of make it look like a PT Cruiser, but maybe they can pull it off. The article points out that the only other four door convertible is the Wrangler Unlimited. Maybe there's room in the market for something like this.

Chrysler asks UAW for 10-hour, four-day workweek {Autoblog}

Aug 12th 2008 7:55AM If the UAW complains about four/10 hour days then perhaps Chrysler should go to four/eight hour days and save themselves even more money.

Lenovo X200 128GB SSD order option gone, offers 64GB SSD for free {Engadget}

Aug 6th 2008 10:54AM If an error is made in "good faith" during an advertisement or the sales process the seller is not obligated to honor the mistake. This happens all the time in print ads where a decimal point is misplaced during the edit process and the news paper goes out to 10,000 customers who show up wondering why they can't by that new car for $2199 instead of $21990.

It's great that they are providing some compensation to people who jumped on what was obviously an error.

Ford Flex earns five stars all around for crash safety {Autoblog}

Aug 5th 2008 2:36PM The big three need to have a few MORE polarizing designs and stop trying to build a car that everyone will like the look of.

Some people will buy a car just because it doesn't look like everything else one the road (PT Cruiser until they let it die on the vine). If they build a good platform under it then they can change the way it looks it later if it's a total bomb.

In person (in some colors) I think it looks fantastic, but I'm not in the market for a seven passenger people mover.

VIDEO: Watch your height... {Autoblog}

Jul 17th 2008 12:18PM Drive thru = fewer parking spaces which saves a bunch of money in shopping centers with high land prices.

They are usually only for quick transactions, deposit a check etc. They generally won't accept complicated matters so it really speeds things up for everyone.
