Ford holds Taurus SHO focus group in Chicago... what does it mean??? {Autoblog}

May 7th 2008 3:55PM Jordan - good call. I was uninformed on the internals & background of the SHO motor. A guy at an autocross told me "yeah, it was made by Yamaha" and I took that at face value. :)

Color me more informed!

May 7th 2008 3:26PM It won't be another SHO unless Yamaha does the motor again. Throwing a run-of-the-mill blue-oval unit under the hood just ruins it.

Every time Yamaha throws a motor in a car, it's fantastic in some way. The SHO V8 sounds great and makes good power. The 2ZZ-GE in the Lotus & Toyotas has fantastic pwr:weight ratio and sounds pretty good too.

2008 International Engine of the Year awards announced... {Autoblog}

May 7th 2008 11:24AM Have you been in one?
I wasn't driving, but from the passenger's seat I didn't notice lag at all, there was just a constant onslaught of power.

OTOH, when I drove the 2008 STI and experienced lag for the first time, I was really disappointed. Totally ruined that car for me. Now I'm looking at N/A cars again because I can't realistically see trying to autocross and have to deal with the stupid lag as well. Totally upsets the car when the turbos come on...

Gas buyers favor brand, not price {Autoblog}

Apr 22nd 2008 11:19AM Erm, to clarify my previous post (Can't edit) - there CAN BE less energy in higher octane. It depends on the formula and isn't a necessity, but it's not impossible for higher octane to have less "power" in the fuel than lower.

Octane simply measures resistance to autocombustion, nothing more.

Apr 22nd 2008 11:15AM "tanker pumping fuel into underground tanks stirs up sediment & hurts performance"

Sorry, but you're uninformed. While there may be some stirring of sediment, the pumps have filters on them for a reason.

Apr 22nd 2008 11:10AM Higher octane does f*ck-all for your performance on an engine that doesn't require it. In fact, there's actually less energy per gallon of gas in higher octane than the lower.

Octane effectively measures how much the fuel resists (premature) detonation, i.e. knock. There's no reason to run premium unless your motor needs it... unless you are looking for whatever added "detergents" and "Cleaners" that tend to only be added to premium fuel.

Apr 22nd 2008 11:07AM I've had several oil analyses done, and several times the analyst has suggested that I should run Shell and avoid BP, citing anecdotal evidence that it does help oil health & engine longevity.

Truth or not, the guy has been doing this for a long time and has seen enough motors that I figure it doesn't really hurt. I prefer Shell, avoid BP, and other than that I'm indifferent. There's a Marathon and a GetGo (Giant Eagle's gas chain) near my office and I use both of those equally, with preference only to GetGo when I have a gas discount from grocery shopping. :)

Subaru issues "stop sale" on all models equipped with turbo'd 2.5-liter {Autoblog}

Apr 7th 2008 3:47PM Anyone else wondering why the recall doesn't affect the identical NA 2.5L unit? Just because the turbo version has "premature wear" doesn't mean that the NA version won't...

My wife is about to put down for a 2.5L (NA) Impreza and I may now tell her to wait... :(

Porsche 911 update includes 100% more awesome: Direct-injection, dual-clutch gearbox {Autoblog}

Apr 4th 2008 11:14PM The R32's DSG is also not equipped to handle the kind of power that the Carrera can put down... Supposedly it tops out around 300 hp & Tq. Off the top of my head, a Carrera S does something like 360 hp and almost as much tq...

Internet FTW! BMW buyer getting M3 thanks to pressure from web {Autoblog}

Mar 24th 2008 5:39PM Anyone else notice that the auction listing tried to claim conflicting information? It mentions "6 speed manual" as well as "dual clutch", when it's clearly a standard 6MT with a clutch pedal. The BMW dual-clutch transmission supposedly won't show up until the M3 convertible... So not only do they not know how to list an auction, the stealership doesn't even know their own damn cars.
