Hedging its bets - HUMMER dealer anticipates doom, pre-emptively downsizes {Autoblog}
Jun 22nd 2008 3:32PM Shiftright: No, the government (local, state, and federal) needs to really overhaul their roadways, and also recalibrate their stoplights.
The parkway near me recently had the cracked pavement "fixed." Fixing it to them was randomly dumping concrete and blacktop down, and not smoothing it out. So now this parkway with a 55mph speed limit had mounds of hardened black pavement, which stick up 4-6" inches and many of the street lamps are burned out and haven't been replaced in ages. Try driving on that with a small car.

Jun 22nd 2008 3:24PM @why not the LS2LS7: That's the problem, automakers are using these large wheels with increasingly lower profile tires. This makes your average shopper walk away because they know they are going to have issues with low profile tires and potholes.

Jun 22nd 2008 3:15PM There are tons of stories of vandals targeting Hummers. Just surf a Hummer forum online, and the vandal horror stories alone will scare you away from the brand. Many get their tires slashed, windows broken, egged, keyed, etc...
There was a major new story a couple of years back, where where a group torched a Hummer dealership in California.

Jun 22nd 2008 3:05PM GM seriously eff'ed up with the Hummer brand. Had it devoted funds to making a fuel efficient diesel (or otherwise) torque monster engine for the Hummer brand - people might have had a different outlook on it.
Had GM not sat on their hands with diesel technology, today people could have had their big large truck, and achieved mid-20s mpg on the highway from a modern clean diesel engine.
The H3 is a failure because of its 4-speed automatic, and archaic inefficient engine choices. Why not a 6 or 7 speed automatic with proper gearing for good low range and also low rpms at highway speed? Why not use an engine that offers cylinder deactivation? Why did GM stick with these ancient engines?
It's a rugged truck with awesome styling, but mechanically, they are stuck in 1995. That in my opinion is the reason for the downfall of the Hummer brand.

Jun 22nd 2008 2:55PM That's a problem I learned the hard way here in the NYC area when I got my 2005 Legacy GT. DOT does the most craptastic job of fixing roads. I was a passenger in an SUV a few months ago, that hit a 1 foot+ deep hole in the road, it went right though it, even though it was a jarring hit. Had I been in my car, I would be stuck replacing at least the bumper, suspension, wheel and tire.
Everyone thinks small cars are the answer to everything, but roads in this country are very poorly maintained. Small cars with their small lower profile tires are always just a pothole away from an expensive repair bill.

Jun 9th 2008 11:27AM I meant to say:
I love the new Challenger, but I am assuming it will be as nasty to lease as the G8 GT is. The lease prices for these $30K cars are as much as the quotes I am getting for a $42K Infiniti G37 and close to a BMW 335i lease.
I get bored easy, so 2-3 years, and I am looking to unload it. But, I'll be damned if I am gonna waste $600 a month on these cars. :/
