Jul 17th 2008 6:52PM GM will continue to operate even if it goes bankrupt. They will restructure and come out of bankruptcy as a new company with new stockholders. The old stockholders will be left holding the empty bag, but it would allow GM to negotiate new labor agreements. It'll be painful for the shareholders, but won't have much impact on the US economy.
As far as the workers go, better a job at market wages than no job at all. GM would rather make cars here than overseas, since they have the factories here and the logistics costs are lower. Competitive wages would keep jobs in the US rather than being shipped overseas because wages are too high.

Jul 15th 2008 9:28PM I wouldn't bet on it. If Nissan is not going to put a manual in the Maxima, the original "4DSC", all of us old-timers (yes, we are the ones who can afford new cars!) will have to go with another choice. I might want to buy a CTS manual just to prove that point!

Jul 15th 2008 7:09PM What! No manual! You can't zoom-zoom without a manual.
Bummer. I usually figure that any car without an option for a manual in its higher powered version is really not meant for the enthusiast. Think SC400, new Maxima, new TL, etc.

Jul 3rd 2008 8:41PM You are delusional. GM, and the other domestics, are no longer of great importance to the US economy. The auto industry is huge, but US based union manufacturing is no longer significant to the US economy as a whole. Big, yes, huge, no.

Jun 16th 2008 9:25PM I think you guys should stop picking on unions. They are entrepreneurs trying to make a living by engaging in good old fashion extortion of businesses and fear tactics to keep the members in line. The only alternative is to work for a living, and who wants to do that?
I just feel sorry for the poor misled union members. They don't seem to be aware that their own leaders are screwing them.
