Panasonic reveals DMC-FZ28 megazoom, DMC-LX3 and DMC-FX37 {Engadget}

Jul 21st 2008 12:22PM Wow, the 1/1.63-inch CCD (in the LX3) is new for Pansonic too. They developed TWO new 10 megapixel sensors, one of which is about the size of a Fuji 12-megapixel SuperCCD. I think Panasonic is also going to take the crown for lowest pixel density (a great thing) with this new camera, albiet just barely. It's still immensely dense compared to, say, an SLR, but the important thing is that Panasonic is reversing the trend of increasing density with each new model. This really is a huge turn-around for Pansonic, and a very welcome one!

To sum up, Panasonic is offering in the LX3 one of the brightest lenses and least-dense pixel sensors in a compact camera in a long time. The combination should yield a camera able to shoot in 4 to 8 times lower light than its predecessor (or even the other current Panasonic models). This is an incredible reversal of some horrible trends plaguing camera design for YEARS.

Panasonic reveals DMC-FZ28 megazoom, DMC-LX3 and DMC-FX37 {Engadget}

Jul 21st 2008 12:02PM FINALLY, a return to bright lenses for compact cameras. Those tiny sensors demand bright lenses. Not since the Canon G6 has their been an F2.0 lens on a compact camera.

To put this in perspective, the average compact camera lens nowadays goes from F2.8 to F5.6 as its largest aperture depending on where the lens is in its zoom range. F2.0 means it lets exactly twice as much light onto the image sensor as F2.8, and F2.8 lets FOUR times more light onto the sensor than an F5.6 lens.

Thus, while a compact camera with an F5.6 lens may have to use a sensitivity ISO800 to shoot indoors, an F2.8 lens can use ISO200 and get the exact same shutter speed. This means MUCH, MUCH less noisy images.

Of course, Panasonic's historically noisy sensors need this advantage, but nonetheless it's good to see a manufacturer start to push its focus (and hopefully advertising) to lens quality. I'd love to see the race for camera quality start focusing on lenses instead of megapixels.

Jul 21st 2008 9:13AM I don't know about "fails", cause it is pretty fast. But I wouldn't buy one. I don't care if it's slightly faster if it's less involving, and the car does not look very involving. I'll always take the simpler, more communicative car- even a Miata- over the one missing a pedal.

McCain has no plans for Detroit bailout {Autoblog}

Jun 29th 2008 7:52PM The government shouldn't have bailed out the airlines either. GM is showing it can become competitive on its own. Government just interferes with unconstitutional union laws, mileage and safety regulations, and other interference.

What you want could be the responsibility of the state government. The federal government exists only to protect the freedoms of individuals, not to fund special interests. That you, like most others, see things otherwise is exactly the problem in America today.

Gauntlet thrown: Corvette ZR1 laps the 'Ring in 7:26.4 {Autoblog}

Jun 27th 2008 3:19PM For those who don't know, the production Michelin tires on the Vette aren't as grippy as the GT-R's stock tires. However, there's some debate as to whether the GT-R was even wearing its stock tires for its 7:29 lap time. These are very important things to consider, as I'd bet the farm that even a Z06 Vette would have no time besting a GT-R around the ring given similar compound racing tires, mainly due to its lighter weight.

Jun 27th 2008 3:13PM Wow, bad driving. I cringed... look at where both cars are pointing at the latter slalom cones. The rest of the course looked like early apexes, too, although it wasn't always easy to tell. I like the comment of the SRT8 "scrubbed off speed with understeer". Maybe it does, but in this case it looks like the driver was simply entering the turns too hot.

Mar 20th 2008 3:34PM Maverick isn't as tall as either MF or TTD but it's a better ride than either thanks to its design and atmosphere. Size isn't everything.

That said, Universal's DIY music and video stuff sounds like a rather unexciting gimmick.

Mar 18th 2008 9:11AM AMD is actually very close to 6 and 8 cores. Their architecture is robust even if it isn't as efficient clock-for-clock as Intel's current stuff. AMD needs 45nm manufacturing to shrink the chips to a point where adding more cores makes sense.
