Will the motorcycle replace the car for performance-minded drivers? {Autoblog}
Feb 6th 2008 1:49PM Short answer: No, motorcycles will not replace performance cars.
I do use my bike to get places, but I won't forgo owning a car. I live in a relatively un-crowded area with beautiful roads. I'd hate to have to ride on crowded highways regularly. Just too unsafe, IMHO.
fm: My 1994 BMW R1100RS has a cat. I think most BMWs have had cats since the mid 90s. I don't think Kawasaki is that far ahead of the game with their cat-equipped bike. Cleanest? Maybe. First? Far from it.
Saab 9-3 Aero investigated for loss of braking power {Autoblog}
Feb 4th 2008 5:01PM Zane,
According to some of the marketing guys, the new Turbo-X is meant to replace the Viggen. (I don't buy it completely, since it has the same HP ratings as the Aero, but there you go.)
I think dealers are taking orders for the limited edition Turbo-X right now.

Father and child survive Ferrari crash {Autoblog}
Jan 30th 2008 1:36PM Are you serious? The driver and child were both thrown from the car. (Did you read the article?) At what point does a car you're no longer riding in help you survive an accident?
I don't follow your logic.

Two Corvettes set to pace Indy, including E85 Z06 {Autoblog}
Dec 27th 2007 8:08PM motorman: I think you're the first to point his out. Great observation. A higher compression ratio means higher thermodynamic efficiency. If a car is designed to run only on E-85, you can make up some of the efficiency difference.
I don't think that ethanol is the solution to our problem, but it might be a small piece of the puzzle. What if farm equipment ran on it, after it was produced semi-locally? Reduction of energy consumption should be a priority, as should finding renewable sources of energy. Wind, Solar, Tidal. Global warming aside, un-sustainable energy usage is not good for any of us in the long-term.
Now, weren't we talking about Corvettes and the Indy-500? Yay, drive those things fast. (In an oval-shaped pattern, yawn, for a long time.) My dad would tape it, and we'd watch it later on in the evening while fast-forwarding the ads and doing something else productive. Now WRC, ALMS, or even F-1, I could get excited about that. I just don't watch much TV anymore.
'Splain Yourself: Senator invites EPA chief to California {Autoblog}
Dec 27th 2007 4:53PM Nate,
I'm not positive on this, but I think that California had their version of an EPA before the federal government did. Maybe this is why CA EPA is allowed different rules: because it's been around longer. (?) This set a precedent long ago as CA started regulating these things before it was ever done at the federal level. Once the federal gvt got involved, it governed all the states other than CA. It couldn't, however, impose less-strict standards on CA, nor could it abolish CA's rules, since they pre-dated the fed's. (Kinda like how Yellowstone N.P. administers their own fishing licenses... they existed as a governed entity before ID, MT, or WY were established as states... so a MT fishing license is worthless in YNP. As another side note, that is why Yellowstone is considered the first N.P... It needed to be federally declared since no state could manage it. So, Yosemite became a national park after Yellowstone, but it existed as a protected park, under CA supervision, before Yellowstone was protected.)
I've certainly been wrong in the past, so if someone knows more, please chime in. I'd be curious to know.
VIDEO: More 1-Series goodness {Autoblog}
Dec 26th 2007 1:45PM BMW e30s. I've owned two. A 1985 325e, and a 1989 325is. Probably one of the best driver's cars ever made. (my dad's e30 M3 is that much better). The e30s handle well, are comfortable (the sport seats were fantastic), with great visibility, and have what I'm looking for in a car. An e30 from '89-'91 with the cloth sport seats, the 2.5L 'i' engine, 16" BBSs and a sunroof... mmmmm! Great cars.
In my opinion, they handle better than a 2002, and much better than an e21 (3-series through '83) and have just enough modern gizmos to be just right. Reliable and easy to work on. I might have to get another one soon. And all less than 2800 lbs.
Now, a properly set-up 2002 (springs, sway bars, and wheels - Minilites, or e30 "bottle caps") is something to behold. And they look so cool.
