SPOILER ALERT: Crashes aplenty at the Spanish Grand Prix {Autoblog}

Apr 28th 2008 9:55AM Well said, Brad. I was pretty nervous until they finally showed him giving the thumb's up as he was hauled off on the stretcher.

SPOILER ALERT: Crashes aplenty at the Spanish Grand Prix {Autoblog}

Apr 28th 2008 9:50AM I think they do the spoiler alert as a warning for people who use DVRs/TiVO and haven't actually watched it yet...

Tony Stewart looking at making a return to Chevrolet {Autoblog}

Apr 25th 2008 1:57PM As a fan of Tony Stewart, I've been reading a lot about this lately. It seems many fans think that Tony is a Chevy man, but I get the impression that Tony is concerned more about winning than he is about what brand loyalty. He wants the to be put in a position to win, regardless of the manufacturer. While Tony Stewart Motorsports is all Chevy these days, they were actually all Mopar until the end of 2006: (http://openwheeler.blogspot.com/2006/12/mopar-switch-roo-chevrolet-to-tony_12.html)

With that said, if being a team owner is what Tony wants, hooking up with a Hendrick satellite team seems like a good thing for the near term, but I imagine Toyota's desire to succeed in NASCAR (and reputation to spend money accordingly) is going to make them the better long-term choice. He probably would do well with a situation like Jeff Gordon and Hendrick have with the 48 team.

Last year, I actually kind of got the impression that Tony would get away from NASCAR after his contract runs out because of his dislike of the media and the NASCAR circus - he'd concentrate on Eldora, WoO, and USAC, and maybe take another swing at the Indy 500. That seems to be where his heart is.

It'll be interesting to see how this all works out.

Danica Patrick wins Indy Japan 300 {Autoblog}

Apr 20th 2008 8:59PM While Danica isn't my favorite driver in IndyCar, I think it's great that she won - not only for her, but also for the IRL. This is a great thing for open-wheel racing in America. With the IRL/Champ Car unification, Graham Rahal's win at St. Pete, and now Danica's win in Japan, the IRL is really on a roll.

People really should give the IRL a chance - it's really good racing and with the new competition, it's going to be a great year. I can't wait to see the Indy 500 this year.

Strong entry list released for 92nd Indianapolis 500 {Autoblog}

Apr 14th 2008 9:51AM There have been foreign manufacturers and drivers in the Indy 500 since it started.

The 1911 running included 3 Fiats, a Mercedes, and a couple of Benz. While all of the drivers except for Gil Andersen were American citizens, 4 were born in other countries.

In 1912, a Mercedes led 196 of the 200 laps before it broke a rod.

French drivers won the race in 1913 and 1914.

Apr 14th 2008 9:20AM This is gonna be awesome! I'm glad to see that bump day will actually mean something.

Six cities busted for shortening yellow light {Autoblog}

Apr 14th 2008 9:20AM OK, I'm not quite understanding this - what is the advantage for the cities? If it were intentional, why would a city do it?

The only thing I can think of is that it would cause more people to run red lights (particularly out-of-towners) and give them an opportunity for ticket revenue.

Is that all there is to it?

House hears bill to establish minimum sound levels for vehicles {Autoblog}

Apr 10th 2008 5:51PM You guys make good points. My concern (although I certainly didn't express it very well, and I apologize for that) is about the push to legislate something that is statistically insignificant while there are many other things that are more dangerous and of bigger concern. I think this is like giving a band-aid to an amputee.

Using rip's example of almost getting hit by a Prius - you didn't almost get hit by a Prius, you almost got hit by someone driving a Prius. I think therein lies the major issue - inattentive drivers. We've got cell phones, iPods, navigation systems and all of this other stuff to distract us. A blind person could just as easily get hit by a mid-size truck being driven by somebody fidgeting with the radio and not watching the road.

So, I guess what I'm trying to say is that I think this approach to legislating safety is really ineffective - if they feel a need to legislate, then they should concentrate on the root of the problem: the inattentive people driving the quiet cars.

I apologize for how I worded my message - I have a hybrid and I admit I took it wrong. The quietness is one of the things I really like about the car - when I sit at an intersection and it shuts off, I can hear better.

House hears bill to establish minimum sound levels for vehicles {Autoblog}

Apr 10th 2008 3:23PM If my Camry Hybrid is gonna have to be louder, then I want it to be as loud as John Force's funny car.

This is the dumbest thing I've ever heard. According to another article I read on this yesterday, nobody's actually been hurt yet. Apparently, since all of our other problems have been solved, this is all the government's got left to do.

Sales of GM hybrids almost non-existent in first quarter {Autoblog Green}

Apr 8th 2008 11:01AM At $50k+ in a down economy, this doesn't surprise me at all. If these were in the $25-30k price range, then I'd be more surprised by these figures.

I just hope the low numbers don't discourage the bean counters at GM and they decide hybrids are bad. I'm looking forward to the Saturn Vue two-mode, which should probably be a more cost-competitive vehicle with a good potential customer base.
